Location & Transportation Hanover and the Upper Valley straddle the New Hampshire–Vermont border in the Upper Connecticut River Valley, about 135 miles northwest of Boston. The intersection of Interstates 91 and 89 just south of Hanover has made the area an important crossroads of Northern New England. With the interstates so close by, if you rise early you can explore the coast of Maine, catch a Red Sox matinee at Fenway Park or shop in Montreal and still be home in time for dinner.

History The signing of the Declaration of Independence was still 15 years away when colonists from Connecticut were granted a charter on July 4, 1761 to roughly seven square miles of heavily wooded land in the Connecticut River Valley of New Hampshire. The first permanent settlement was started in 1765 east of today’s Hanover, where the rushing waters of Mink Brook powered saw mills and grist mills vital to the future of this rural outpost.

Hanover and several other Grafton County towns seceded from New Hampshire and were admitted to the state of Vermont. They rejoined New Hampshire in 1784. By the time of the first census in 1790, 1,380 people called Hanover their home.

In December of 1769, Dartmouth College was chartered, and when the college formally opened in Hanover in 1770, an estimated 20 families were living in the town. In 1778, The village that sprung up around Dartmouth grew and eventually replaced today’s Hanover Center as the business hub of the town. Now, Hanover is an eclectic mix of a downtown centered around a traditional Main Street and the more rural villages of Etna and Hanover Center. A population that nearly doubled from 6,259 in 1950 to 11,124 in 2004 is almost evenly split between fulltime residents and Dartmouth students.

Across the river, Norwich had a population of 3,544 in the 2000 census.

Townspeople and students alike enjoy a vibrant and safe community that combines the cultural and business advantages of a city with the charms of small-town life—all in an area of unparalleled natural beauty. d

Tourism From cross-country or downhill skiing to kayaking on the Connecticut River; from hiking the Appalachian Trail to shopping on a classic Main Street; from prowling through any of the many noted museums or galleries to dining in any of several dozen restaurants, the Hanover area is more than just a home to those lucky enough to live here. After bicycling along the Connecticut, teeing off at Hanover Country Club or one of the other courses sprinkled throughout the valley, marveling at a raptor performance at the Vermont Institute of Natural Science or checking out the renowned Orozco murals at

Dartmouth College, it’s time to eat. Whether your taste leans to steak and seafood at Jesse’s to Tandoori Chicken at the Jewel of India, to Hawaiian pizza at Ramunto’s Brick & Brew, to something familiar like a sandwich at Quiznos, to the classic diner feel of Lou’s or to something as informal and collegiate as the Bagel Basement, it’s all here.

When the sun sets, it is time to check out what’s on tap at the College’s Hopkins Center, see the latest flick at Hanover’s Nugget Theater, listen to live local musicians or head across the river to White River Junction, VT to catch a performance of Northern Stage at the Briggs Opera House.

Throughout the year, there’s always a reason to visit and plenty to see and do. The Farmer’s Market in Hanover runs weekly from June through the end of September

with regular and rotating vendors including those setting up to sell fresh local produce in the late afternoon while live music entertains shoppers. A visit to the area might include taking in Hanover’s Occom Pond Party in February, the quaint Hanover Center Old Timers Fair and Oxen Pull in June, StreetFest in July or Ivy League football and leaf-peeping in the fall. Celebrate the Season events include great shopping, crafting and caroling as well as the Handel Society Holiday singing in December, when Dartmouth’s Thompson Arena fills for exciting Ivy League ice hockey. d

rentals from $700 to more than $1,500 per month. Prices across the river in Norwich were comparable. From 2005-2007, 49 singlefamily house construction business permits were issued in Hanover, with the average construction cost being $330,300. Bolstered

by Dartmouth College and DartmouthHitchcock Medical Center, the area boasts a stable economy that traditionally has allowed real estate in the area to weather business downturns felt elsewhere in New England and the nation.

The Hanover area has seen a growth of green “clustered housing” options in recent years.

The town voted overwhelmingly to donate land for, and work with the developers of “Gile Hill,” an environmentally friendly and energy efficient neighborhood offering affordable housing near the hospital and downtown areas. The addition in recent years of several senior housing options in Hanover and surrounding towns has accelerated the area’s growth as a retirement destination.

Despite its modest population, Hanover, like Norwich, features a full-time police force.

Hanover also offers 24-hour fire and EMT coverage. The environmentally concerned towns provide curbside recycling and filtered water to those on the town system. Cell phone coverage has improved dramatically and high-speed Internet is available in most of the town and much of the area. d

Arts & Entertainment Hanover and the Upper Valley are a mecca for the performing and visual arts. In addition to a myriad of offerings at Dartmouth College and its renowned Hopkins Center for the Arts, the area offers a wealth of entertainment options, including shows at the Lebanon Opera House and performances by Opera North and the Northern Stage theatrical company, which has staged more than 50 productions since taking up residency in White River Junction in 1997.

a contra dance at a local church, a noted speaker or author or an open mic night at a local establishment. Have a drink and listen to soft acoustic music at a local club or take a 10-minute drive to a nightclub in West Lebanon.

The area is rich with galleries, museums and local visual and performing artists, including Dartmouth College’s Hood Museum and The League of New Hampshire Craftsmen.

Nearby Lebanon features the AVA (Alliance for the Visual Arts) Gallery, which shows the works of more than 150 area artists. If Hanover’s Nugget Theater or the Loew Auditorium at the Hopkins Center for Performing Arts aren’t showing a movie to your taste, a short drive will bring you to other options.

If sports are your thing, catch the action on the Dartmouth campus where opponents like Harvard, Princeton and Yale are regular visitors and Boston College, Notre Dame and Stanford occasionally dot the schedule. d 26 www.hanoverchamber.org

Cabin on Gilman Island for an overnight adventure an easy paddle from town, or you can fly fish for native trout at Mink Brook or fish for bass on Goose Pond.

After its renovation in 2001, the par-71 public course at the Hanover Country Club measures almost 6,500 yards. Tennis and swimming enthusiasts are right at home at Storrs Pond, which features picnicking and secluded camping sites. Horseback riders of all ages enjoy Dartmouth’s Morton Farm, where college students and community members ride and board horses. Additional area golf courses, campgrounds, swimming and fishing holes are easy to find and accessible to all.

With the Appalachian Trail passing through Norwich and crossing the Connecticut River in Hanover before heading through town and ducking back into the woods, it’s not unusual for a family out for a short walk to find themselves chatting with “thru hikers,” heading from Georgia to Maine. Come

With the gently flowing Connecticut River on the western edge of town, hiking trails running to the 2,100-foot peak of Moose Mountain to the east, and Hanover Country Club, Occom Pond and Storrs Pond between, Hanover has everything for an active and healthy lifestyle. For water sports, the Ledyard Canoe Club rents canoes and kayaks and offers instruction at reasonable rates. You can even reserve the Titcomb

winter, the Dartmouth Cross Country Ski Center offers more than 25 kilometers of groomed cross-country ski trails at Hanover Country Club and adjacent to Storrs Pond, where the Oak Hill area hosted the NCAA Championships in 2003, with rentals and memberships available. Skiers flock to the Dartmouth Skiway, a true family area with a new lodge but an old-time feel, or to Enfield’s Whaleback Mountain featuring downhill skiing, snow boarding and tubing under the lights. Many of the top ski areas in New England are within an easy drive.

The whole family will enjoy sledding at the Hanover Country Club, skating on Occom Pond or throwing a frisbee or playing tennis at Norwich’s Huntley Meadows. Campion 28

Shopping Around the Upper Valley they like to say, “They don’t make downtowns like Hanover anymore.” While that’s true, Hanover hasn’t stood still. The addition of the South Block has grown the downtown, adding a full block and a half of shops, restaurants and apartments to a true American Main Street.

There are convenience stores where you can grab a loaf of bread and the Hanover Consumer Co-op, which has two full and one convenient grocery store that feature local farm products, all the big brands you know and the little brands you requested. Kitchen wares, laundry services, musical instruments and recordings, opticians, orthodontists and pharmacies are some of what is within walking distance of Main Street. Cross the river to find Norwich Square where shops offer everything from funky gifts to a good book or a favorite spirit.

Education At its core, Hanover is a community of teachers and learners. Known as the home of the Ivy League’s Dartmouth College, the town features one of the most highly regarded public school systems in New England. Hanover and Norwich are principals in the Dresden School District, which was the first interstate school district in the nation.

Top students at Hanover High can take courses at Dartmouth, which features 4,300 undergraduates and 1,500 graduate students.

With approximately 770 students, the newly renovated Hanover High School features a faculty that would be the envy of many small colleges. The school regularly sends upwards of 90 percent of its students to colleges, including many of the finest schools in the country. Hanover’s wide-ranging athletic program repeatedly wins state championships in a variety of sports as well as music and quiz bowl competitions. Newly built Richmond Middle School, Ray Elementary School in Hanover, Marion Cross School in Norwich and Lyme Elementary School prepare students for the challenging curriculum at the high school.

All told, Dartmouth offers 17 graduate programs in the arts and sciences and three graduate professional schools—the Dartmouth Medical School, Thayer School of Engineering and the Amos Tuck School of Business. Virtually anywhere on and close to campus visitors can access the weather, travel information or their email through Dartmouth Public, the college’s free Wi-Fi portal.

Following a major expansion in 2005, Hanover’s Howe Library features 79,000 volumes, three meeting rooms for nonprofit groups, banks of Internet-ready computers and, like the Norwich Library, open Wi-Fi

Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital in Lebanon is a 32-bed community hospital that specializes in a family-centered approach in 30-plus specialties and clinical areas. Government Hanover is governed by a select board and a town manager. The five members of the select board are elected for staggered three-year terms on Town Meeting day, the second Tuesday in May. The select board, which is charged with implementing town meeting decisions, hires the town manager, who serves as the chief executive officer of the town. The town manager oversees Hanover’s daily operation and is the administrative head of all town departments. The town manager is responsible for hiring and town administrative services such as finance, accounting and revenue collection.
