tasca is a delightful study in contrasts and that dichotomy works.
Its quaint downtown, which caters to residents and features local merchants and restaurateurs, is nicely tucked away in the midst of Fortune 500 corporation headquarters in large office parks. The tax money these large office parks provide allow Itasca residents to enjoy an enviable way of life. Itasca’s residential neighborhoods straddle the railroad tracks running through the village. Light industrial facilities, corporate headquarters and commercial properties take up much of the land situated further from the village center.
Itasca’s housing is a mix of single and multi-family homes. The downtown area is made up of older homes, some built in the mid-1800s. Those surrounding the Itasca Country Club were built in the 1920s. The majority of Itasca homes, however, were built in the 1950s and 1960s, with newer ones built as recently as the 1980s on the community’s residential perimeter.

Itasca Community Library
I
t takes a village to build a strong community. The library, along with the other government entities, does its share to add value to the community by contributing to the cultural and educational well-being of the residents. This past year the Itasca Community Library, in addition to its offerings of regular programs such as youth storytimes, book discussions, and general interest programs, introduced several new special interest groups. We have a Chess Club where people looking for a partner can come to better their skills or just enjoy playing together. Starting this fall we will also have a group for mahjong players and a monthly Games Night. Keep the library in mind if you’re looking for a neutral gathering place to meet and share your interest or hobby. You provide the enthusiasm, we will provide the space! For non-native English speakers who want to become more proficient in the English language, we have a successful weekly English conversational class. This has helped residents gain confidence to be informed and active citizens of our community.
Participants of the group can try out some of the wonderful vision equipment donated by the Itasca Lions Club. Kids and teens can participate in many programs at the library including our cooking clubs that teach kids, in a fun environment, the very important life skills of good nutrition and preparation of simple healthy food. We also have Makerspace Mondays where the principles of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math can be learned through innovative and creative activities. Last December we held our annual Night with Santa along with other village entities. The theme was Traditions from Around the World. This year, in keeping with the Village’s 125th anniversary, we will celebrate the theme of Generations and History. As for signature events, in March we hosted a successful Library Carnival with games and fun for all. Closely following in April we hosted our 2nd Garden Fest with members of the Itasca Garden Club. These programs offer community members a place to come together and mingle, and learn and share their interests and talents.
Love watching movies? We now offer a service called Hoopla where you can stream movies, music, and eBooks Maintained by the Itasca Library and the Friends of the Library directly to your phone, tablet, and computer. hildren in Itasca are educated by Itasca School District 10 which has three schools serving distinct grade levels. Raymond Benson Primary School caters to children in pre-Kindergarten through grade two. Elmer H. Franzen Intermediate School serves grades three through five and F.E. Peacock Middle School teaches grades six through eight. In recent years the district has educated approximately 950 students annually. Itasca School District 10 continues to be one of the top scoring school districts in DuPage County. In fact, the Illinois State Board of Education has awarded “recognition status” to the District 10 schools.
IN THE MIDDLE OF EVERYTHING
In addition, in 2013 Peacock Middle School and Franzen Intermediate School were both issued the Academic Excellence Award by the state, two of only 454 schools in the state to be so honored. The Lutheran School of St. Luke also serves the community. Lake Park High School District 108 serves the older, teenage students of Itasca and all or parts of six other neighboring communities. Approximately 3,000 students attend Lake Park, with freshmen and sophomores going to East Campus and juniors and seniors attending West Campus.

Itasca Park District
T
he Itasca Park District is going for the hat-trick! IPD has been named a Gold Medal Finalist for 2015 through the National Recreation and Parks Association! There are four finalists from across the nation competing for this prestigious award. Itasca with a population of approximately 9,000 is opposing park districts with populations of up to 30,000. The park district has won this award previously in 2003 and 2009. The winner will be announced in September 2015 at the National Conference. Technology has undergone a great update in the last year with the unveiling of a new website that provides Online Registration, text and email alerts on many programs, leagues and facilities. Recreation and Accounting Software packages were also replaced. Peacock Park reopened in June 2015 after an exciting renovation, boasting a new baseball diamond, turf volleyball court, walking paths, baggo courts, two basketball halfcourts, a bocce court, picnic pavilion and in-line skate board nodes. The District is awaiting a promised Open Space Land Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) grant for 50 percent of the cost from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
In January 2015, the park district was awarded a $363,500 grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources for renovation of the Ray Franzen Bird Sanctuary. This project would include Itasca’s first dog park, a nature-based play area, outdoor fitness station, outdoor classroom, boardwalk, shelter, grill and habitat restoration. This grant is currently suspended. The park district is hopeful that the grant will come through and allow this fantastic renovation to its facilities. The Itasca Historical Depot Museum’s recent restoration of the over 140 year-old structure has been a huge success. The addition and renovation of an original 1939 Milwaukee Road orange caboose on site has thrilled train enthusiasts young and old! Many exciting events are planned for this year in conjunction with the Village of Itasca’s 125th Anniversary. Make sure to check out Oktoberfest on Sept. 10 and 11 where the park district will be offering free crafts, tattoos, balloons and more for kids in the Kids Korner! Check www.itasca.com/ oktoberfest for hours.
Phase 1 of the Springbrook Nature Center project has been completed, upgrading infrastructure inside and out including new air conditioning units, siding, roofing, ADA Accessibility and insulation. Phase 2 is underway, providing new exhibits and interpretive indoor and way-finding outdoor signage. The project cost is $620,000.

Business Profiles tasca and its Chamber of Commerce are fortunate to boast a diverse economic base and a wide range of businesses, large and small, new and well-established. Cooking Skills Academy Itasca is home to a culinary school that offers over 150 different two-hour classes on a rotating basis to amateur cooks and bakers of all experience levels, taught by renowned local chefs, some of whom are full-time Academy staff members and others who share their art on their days off from local restaurants. They teach students how to make restaurant-quality meals in realistic ways that they can pull off at home, according to Chef Paul Guerrero, culinary director. “All the students have to do is show up, make a big mess, stuff their faces and head home with lots of food. We do everything else,” he explained. The public classes can be reserved online at www. cookingskillsacademy.com and can sell out a month or two in advance. In addition, corporate groups can schedule team building sessions and mock competitions in the tradition of television programs like Chopped, Iron Chef and Cutthroat Kitchen at the school or in their own facility.
“The food world has really changed in the last 10 years. Chefs have become rock stars in their own rights and some of them are paid as much or more than professional athletes,” Guerrero explained. “I saw this evolution and thought that it would be cool if corporate employees could watch and even participate in cooking battles like those they see on television.” Guerrero is very active in the food world. In addition to running Cooking Skills Academy, he is the Chef/Advocate to the Toasty Cheese food truck and owns Mia Passione Italian restaurant in River Grove. He also is the talent and business manager for Celebrity Chef Mario Rizzotti of Iron Chef American on the Food Network and consults for restaurants around the country. For more information, call Cooking Skills Academy at (888) 664-8865, visit www.PGcooks.com or engage on social media (Facebook: /gourmetskills; Twitter and Instagram: @gourmetskills).
Guerrero, who has been in the restaurant business since he was 15 and has worked for such well-known chefs and restaurants as Wolfgang Puck and Lettuce Entertain You’s Wildfire Restaurants, teamed up in 2012 with Itasca’s DESIGNfirst residential design/build firm to establish Cooking Skills Academy at 1201 Norwood Ave. DESIGNfirst had been conducting small-scale cooking classes at their corporate headquarters in order to teach customers how to properly cook in the fancy new kitchens that DESIGNfirst had built for them. Guerrero took over the space and began offering a much expanded list of classes open to anyone who wants to enroll and he began marketing them to Fortune 500 corporations, as well. Cooking Skills Academy is also willing to take its “chef entertainment” shows on the road, to outdoor festivals, trade shows, corporate offices and other venues.

Business Profiles Integrated Document Technologies (IDT) Storing documents and accessing them when necessary is a challenge. Itasca-based IDT provides businesses – large and small, local, national and international – with full-service document capture and content management solutions including the professional services to assess a firm’s needs, the necessary software and hardware to meet those needs, the business process knowledge to advise on best practices, and staff training, according to Mike Nolfo, president. In business since 1992, IDT provides turn-key content management solutions for a wide variety of firms in industries ranging from banking to pharmaceuticals, health care to manufacturing. “We can take any document that a firm has and provide the technology to capture that content electronically, transforming it from a piece of paper to a secure, easily stored and accessed electronic document, explained Nolfo. In fact, two IDT clients now scan documents at every office, saving them between $50,000 and $300,000 per year because they no longer have to ship paper documents to headquarters. And once the documents are managed electronically, firms are also able to further streamline their business processes like invoicing and mortgage approvals because users can now securely route electronic content to one another, not paper. This makes order processing more efficient, increases customer satisfaction, lowers the cost of human labor and also makes locating the necessary documents for audits and litigation easier. IDT’s consultants work closely with clients to determine the best approach for capturing and managing their critical business content – whether it is through software deployed in their own data center or by utilizing IDT’s cloud-based offerings. “We can configure the content management software to search for a particular contract number, purchase order or invoice number or by searching for a key word anywhere in the document or any other way they want to be able to search, he said. Clients may choose to have their own staff perform the scanning or IDT can do it for them at their fully equipped scanning facility and upload the documents directly to the client’s document repository.
“Customer service has improved. Productivity is up. Man-power requirements are down. Lost documents are a thing of the past. Not surprisingly, the system investment was amortized in just one year. IDT Client Hallmark Data Systems, Niles, IL

he demand for industrial space in Itasca has spiked in the past year as the country’s economy continues to improve and business owners see work on the long-awaited Elgin-O’Hare Expressway progressing. “Long-vacant industrial properties are filling up, primarily with logistics firms, light manufacturers and tool and die firms, competing for visibility along the new tollway, numbered as Illinois Route 390,” explained Nancy Hill, Itasca Community Development Director. “We expect the stretch through Itasca to be completed by the end of 2017 and by 2019, the Elgin-O’Hare Expressway will extend to the western edge of O’Hare.”
even more restaurants, retail and hotels to the area which is located right where I-290/355 and the Elgin-O’Hare Expressway cross. In addition, Helix Camera recently relocated from Chicago to Itasca, bringing its retail operations as well as a photo studio and instruction space for advanced amateur photographers the intimate downtown. Elsewhere in town, a formerly vacant restaurant along Rohlwing Road has re-opened as “Antonio’s Ristorante” and the new owners of the Itasca Country Club have opened their on-site restaurant to the public. It is an American grille called “The Fox and The Turtle.” “The disruption caused by all of the highway construction has been minimal because the Tollway Authority has been vigilant about notifying local residents and businesses about what is happening and that has been key to helping them plan. So we expect that years from now when we look back, the net effect of the Elgin-O’Hare Expressway will have been entirely positive,” Hill added.
Hill said that they are also seeing more interest being expressed in vacant office space. For instance, Flexera software moved its office and 175 employees to Itasca and Henricksen Furniture recently relocated its corporate headquarters and some warehouse space from a smaller location in Itasca to a larger one in town. “Leasing agents and potential company executives are no longer just kicking the tires, so to speak. They are showing a definite interest in Itasca and the access and visibility it provides thanks to I-355, I-290 and the new Route 390. Itasca has become even more attractive to these people,” she explained. “We are very excited about the potential. Good things are coming to Itasca,” Hill added. For instance, a new 290-unit luxury apartment building is planned for Hamilton Lakes. Village officials hope that the new mix of office and residential uses there will attract

very time you get stopped by a train in downtown Itasca and curse under your breath while you wait, take that time to reflect on the fact that Itasca would look very different today if it weren’t for that railroad. Itasca was a farming community when the short-lived Chicago and Pacific Railroad was built through the area in 1874. Three years later it went broke, due to a nationwide depression, caused by railroad speculation – similar to the recession in 2008 that was caused, largely, by speculation in real estate, according to Michael Stachnik, archivist for the Itasca Community Library. “Settlers were not moving west as quickly as the speculators had anticipated, so the many railroads constructed went under,” he explained. A few years later, in 1880, the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad bought the line, eventually extended it west to Savannah, Illinois on the Mississippi River and operated all of the trains on the tracks until 1985 when Metra took over operation of Chicago’s commuter rail lines to preserve public access through good times and bad.
The vintage housing and business buildings that you see in downtown Itasca also exist because of the railroad, according to Stachnik. Downtown Itasca developed around the train station, for the sake of convenience. So, wealthy people who could afford the higher-priced land close to the station built their lovely Victorian homes there. Business people also established their businesses. For instance, Ernst Kraegel opened his Itasca Lumber, Feed and Coal business there in the early 1900s, as close to the railroad as he could get for ease of off-loading goods. For many years, Itasca was the end of the commuter run for the railroad, so a train would pull in on Saturday night and sit idle until it went back to Chicago on Monday morning. The train crew would spend the weekend at the Eggleston’s Hotel and, according to Stachnik, the conductor ran a Sunday School in an empty train car every Sunday morning since Itasca had no churches at the time. By the 1920s, Burtt B. Clover, the developer of the Itasca Country Club, even platted a formal downtown for Itasca. But before anything really got off the ground, the Crash of 1929 hit and the plans were never carried through. All that remains are some colored drawings in the archives, Stachnik said. But the people of Itasca didn’t seem to really care about his bankruptcy. They were taking care of their own growth. Archival documents show the construction of modern streets and sidewalks, sewers and even a water tower over the years. There are even letters that Village officials wrote to Illinois Bell, asking for phone lines. In 1910, Lewis McKenzie and his wife moved to town, sent by the railroad to be the stationmaster. They became very prominent socially and his wife, Josephine, even helped to form the forerunner of the Itasca Community Library in 1927, the Itasca Women’s Club in 1924 and the Itasca Garden Club in 1928 – improvements that can be directly attributed to the existence of the railroad, too.
In the intervening years, a village developed around the Itasca train station that Elijah Smith donated $400 to build on land adjacent to his Maplewood property.
“Just like rivers and canals had in previous years, the railroads encouraged the development of communities because people craved access to transportation,” Stachnik explained. “Who knows what Itasca would look like today without the railroad?”
“Smith foresaw that the railroad would bring great things to Itasca, so he invested in it by donating the land for a station that was built by A.G. Chessman who would later become the first president of the Itasca Board of Trustees,” Stachnik said. “And he was right. Just compare the development of Itasca to the development of its neighbor, Elk Grove Village. Both were farming communities in the 1870s. But by 1890, Itasca had grown enough that it was able to be incorporated and by 1920 they had built a Village Hall. Elk Grove Village didn’t incorporate until 1956.” “Having a railroad run through your town changed the dynamics. It allowed farmers, for instance, to easily ship their produce, milk and livestock to the markets in Chicago. It allowed residents to get into Chicago quickly to do business and return the same day,” he continued. “It also encouraged the development of some local industry because there was access to transportation for the shipment of goods. A.G. Chessman, for instance, started both a cheese company and a box company in Itasca. Farming was no longer the only way to make a living here and that all traces back to the presence of the railroad.”

T
he Itasca Country Club has been an important part of the community since it was established in 1925. But thanks to the Club’s new owners, Itasca Golf Investors LLC, it will now become an even more integral part of the local scene because its “Fox and Turtle” restaurant is now open to the public daily for both lunch and dinner. “Since we acquired the 90-year-old private club in September, 2014, we have done $1.5 million in renovations to the restaurant downstairs and to the ballroom upstairs, including the addition of a beautiful bridal suite,” said Leeann Repta, acting general manager. “And all are ADA-accessible.”
The pub features 30 craft beers on tap and provides a chef-driven menu featuring salads, burgers, sandwiches, steaks and pasta. Chef Ranferi “Ron” Flores, formerly of the Rosebud Restaurants, runs the kitchen and creates the fare. Outdoor dining on a patio overlooking the Itasca golf course is also available during good weather. “Fox and Turtle” opens at 11 a.m. seven days a week and stays open until 10 p.m. on Sundays, midnight during the week and 1 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. “We knew that we needed to do something different if we wanted the Itasca Country Club to continue to maintain a presence in Itasca long-term. So we undertook a significant renovation and opened the restaurant to the public because we realized that Itasca needed an additional dining option,” she continued. “Fox and Turtle is a 200-seat casual dining restaurant, decorated like an upscale American pub, with a temperaturecontrolled wine room where members can store their personal wine. But you won’t find white country club tablecloths here!” Repta explained.
“We would like the public to come and visit us and maybe consider joining the club as a social, recreational or golf member,” Repta said. “But they are also welcome to host parties, large and small, at our facility. We have two private dining areas at “Fox and Turtle” and our ballroom can hold over 500 people or can be divided into several smaller rooms.” The Itasca Country Club is located at 400 E. Orchard St. For more information, visit www.itascacountryclub.com or call (630) 773-1800. The “Fox and Turtle” is located within the Itasca Country Club.
