efferson, a small quaint community, is known for its German heritage and historical buildings dating back to the 1800s. Our forefathers set the ground work for a community that would continue to grow as seen today with several new developments in progress. The city is also complemented by a growing industrial park which includes a solar plant and major industries. Our public and private schools represent some of the best in the area and the youth of our community are fortunate to have such diverse educational opportunities available. The Jefferson Chamber of Commerce is proud to be a partner in the ongoing development of our community for the past 45 years. We hold several events each year and beautification projects which are all welcoming to anyone visiting our community. We want to welcome you to Jefferson, the county seat where you can play, stay, shop or eat where the junctions of the Crawfish and Rock River meet. We encourage you to visit Jefferson, whether this is your first visit or repeat visit we trust you will enjoy the area we proudly call “Gemuetlichkeit City” and return often. Slate not only offers an alternative option that’s elegant and modern, it also maintains its great appearance. The dark matte finish naturally hides fingerprints, smudges and dirt. It’s also a breeze to clean using a clean cloth and a mild household detergent. Stylish and practical.

History T
he area’s first settlers arrived at current-day Jefferson on December 18, 1836.
The city’s early settlers were of English descent, coming from New York and other eastern U.S. areas. Soon thereafter, immigrants came primarily from Germany and Eastern Europe. In 1838, the new settlement’s population surged with the arrival of prominent residents W. Sanborn, A. Ebenezer and M. Seaton. The burgeoning community continued to grow and prosper over the years, earning village incorporation on April 13, 1857. After an act of the Wisconsin legislature, the Village of Jefferson obtained approval for incorporation as a city on March 19, 1878. At the time Jefferson was incorporated as a city, it boasted a population of just under 3,000 residents. The city’s small-town atmosphere was characterized by such features as kerosene lamps, coal and wooden stoves, barns, hitching posts, dirt streets and a horsewatering tank located in the center of Main Street. Today, Jefferson encompasses a growing population of more than 7,900 people. It was the vision, labor and perseverance of diligent residents and elected officers throughout Jefferson’s history that have made Jefferson a “good city today” and a “better city in the future.”
The Jefferson Historical Society Standing as the local history resource, the Jefferson Historical Society serves the City of Jefferson and possesses a substantial archive of photographs and a collection of historic artifacts. The Historical Society and its collection can be discovered on the lower level of City Hall. The Crawfish and Rock Rivers both offer boating, canoeing and fishing, and the Rock River Dam has one of only a few constructed fish ladders in the state. The Dam is an excellent place to fish or to view the fish as they make their way up the ladder and over the dam.

Homes
A
lthough the community has grown and prospered, it has sustained its serene and tranquil environment, giving way to a small-town appeal with all of the conveniences attributed to a larger city.
A drive or a stroll along the streets of Jefferson will uncover a number of distinct historic homes with many dating back to the mid-1800s. These residential structures have maintained the aesthetic beauty on which they were originally built through restoration initiatives. Adding to the grandeur of the city’s older sections are the mature trees lining the residential streets, providing lovely scenery — notably in the colors of the changing seasons.

As Jefferson’s population continues to gradually increase, newer homes and subdivisions have been developed on the northwest, northeast and southeast portions of town in order to accommodate new residents. And for those not in the market to buy right away, Jefferson offers plenty of rental and leasing options.
