We also use vegetable oil based inks, low VOC solvents and alcohol free fountain solutions in the press room. Through October 2010, MultiAd has recycled 860,467 pounds of paper which translates to saving: 7,314 trees, 3,011,610 gallons of water, 163,487 gallons of oil, 1,291 cubic yards of landfill space, 1,720,920 kilowatt hours and 25,814 pounds of air pollutants. We also recycled 21.5 tons of aluminum plates.

History T

he land that constitutes currentday Jersey County was once inhabited by the Kickapoo, Menomini, Potawatomi and Illiniwek Confederation Native American tribes. The first Europeans – Father Marquette and Louis Jolliet – arrived in 1673, discovering fertile land, abundant rivers, rich vegetation and prime hunting ground. Settlers began relocating to the area following the War of 1812, and on February 28, 1839, Jersey County was formed, obtaining its name in honor of the state in which many of its early settlers had emigrated – New Jersey. Jerseyville was soon designated the county seat, with construction on the stately county courthouse (which still stands today) completed in 1894.

Throughout the 19th Century, southern Illinois, including the Jersey County area, served as a major stop along the Underground Railroad. The “free” state of Illinois bordered one of the main U.S. slavery auctioning blocks – St. Louis, MO – making this a prime destination for escaping slaves. The county and its closely surrounding area housed several Underground Railroad “stations,” including the Cheney Mansion, Josiah White’s Log Cabin, Hamilton Memorial School, Rocky Farm, Lewis & Clark Community College, the Lyman Trumbull House, the Old Rock House and several others.

The Jersey County Historical Society Museum and Research Center, located on

the Cheney Mansion site, maintains the vibrant history of the area through a large collection of artifacts, clothing, photographs and documents. The museum was expanded in 2007, thanks to the extensive donation of antique and Indian artifacts from longtime member Les Flautt.

Location & TRANSPORTATION

J

ersey County is furnished with an excellent location in southwestern Illinois, at the confluence of the Mississippi and Illinois rivers and approximately 45 minutes from downtown St. Louis. This strategic position places the communities of Jersey County in the midst of a high-quality transportation network of highways, waterways and air transit options.

U.S. Route 67 and State Routes 16 and 109 converge in the heart of Jerseyville, while State Route 100 traverses the shores of the Mississippi River. Drivers also utilize State Route 3 in the southern portion of the county, along with Interstates 55, 255 and 270, which are reachable in approximately 25-30 miles from the area. Various portions of Rt. 3, Rt. 16 and Rt. 109 are planned to be widened and resurfaced, and more importantly Rt. 67 is being reconstructed as a 4-lane expressway connecting to I-255 in Godfrey and providing Interstate Access to Jersey County as part of IDOT’s multiyear plan ( 2009-2013).

General and corporate aviation is supplied through St. Louis Regional Airport in East Alton – located just southeast of Jersey County. Each year, the airport handles around 80,000 operations and hosts more

ducational opportunities from early childhood development through university studies are all available within the Jersey County learning community. While the area is home to various private and parochial institutions, the majority of students enroll in public education through Jersey Community School District Unit No. 100. The pre-K through 12th grade school system is composed of several elementary schools, Illini Middle School and Jersey Community High School.

District No. 100 is committed to providing the highest quality of education and enhancing the academic and social lives of its growing student population. It maintains some of the highest standards in the state and boasts high graduation rates and aboveaverage achievement on standardized tests.

Post-secondary education is offered through a number of colleges and universities in the region. Locally, Jersey County hosts Principia College in Elsah, a four-year, liberal arts college offering more than 30 different majors and minors and a highly active campus life.

Neighboring Godfrey is the site of Lewis & Clark Community College, which caters to approximately 13,500 students working to obtain associate degrees or professional certificates. Lewis & Clark operates the Tri-County Community Education Center in Jerseyville as well. The campus provides exceptional corporate and

eligion and spirituality has been a cornerstone in the Jersey County community since its earliest days, as houses of worship were among the first structures established by settlers.
