onveniently located one hour south of downtown Chicago, the communities of Kankakee County are afforded a small-town sense of living, all with complete access to the amenities of a large city.

In addition to the Kankakee County’s advantageous highway system are several other means of transportation. The River Valley Metro furnishes the community with affordable and convenient fixed-route bus service to destinations throughout the county, while Greyhound offers regular service from Kankakee’s Economy Inn, 2125 S. Schuyler, to sites outside of the area, including Chicago, Champaign, Springfield, St. Louis, MO, and Memphis, TN.

Kankakee, Bourbonnais, Bradley, Manteno and Aroma Park are all strategically positioned off I-57, which runs north to south, offering an easy connection to Chicago, and several points in

Metra commuter rail service is provided in nearby University Park. As for air service, the Greater Kankakee Airport has two runways capable of handling business jets and personal aircraft. Commercial flights are available through two Chicago-based airports, including Midway International Airport, situated approximately one hour from the area, and O’Hare International Airport, which is 1.5 hours away. The region is spotted with a collection of daycare centers/preschools, public school districts, private institutions and higher learning facilities. All of these resources come together to create a strong learning community complete with educational opportunities at every level.

HIGHER LEARNING

EARLY CHILDHOOD, PRIMARY & SECONDARY EDUCATION

Kankakee Community College, a two-year junior college, is a top choice for graduating high school seniors, adult learners and employers, as it offers a catalog full of credit and noncredit courses in varying areas. In addition to granting associate degrees and certificates for both transfer and workforce entry, KCC provides opportunities for continuing education, workforce development and pre-college remedial development.

Kankakee County supplies a number of options when it comes to educating our youth. An assortment of daycare and early childhood education centers are available for busy parents looking to start their children off on the right foot. In Kindergarten, students enroll in one of four public school districts in the area, including Bradley Elementary School District No. 61, Bourbonnais Elementary School District No. 53, St. George School District No. 228 and Kankakee School District 111, or one of several private and parochial institutions. Secondary education is mainly provided through KSD 111 and the Bradley-Bourbonnais Community High School District No. 307. BBCHS is equipped with a highly qualified staff and features a collection of diverse curricular and co-curricular offerings. Among the many notable opportunities supplied to students at BBCHS

Located in Bourbonnais is Olivet Nazarene University (ONU), a four-year, private, Christian, liberal arts university dedicated to strong values and excellent education. With enrollment reaching close to 4,600 undergraduate and graduate students, ONU strives to provide an exceptional learning experience by offering associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees. Approximately 100 fields of study within four schools and one college are available to students attending the university. ONU also offers continuing studies on all degree levels. One of the top Nazarene universities in the country, ONU draws students from across the country and other parts of the world. Further options for higher education lie within surrounding areas, including Governors State University – a public university positioned approximately 25 miles north of the Kankakee area in University Park. GSU offers a total of 50 degree programs at both undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as 23 certificate programs and plenty of noncredit options. GSU works closely with KCC by supplying the Dual Degree Program. This valuable program enables students to complete an associate’s degree at KCC, then transfer seamlessly to GSU to complete a bachelor’s degrees.

RECREATION

K

ankakee County offers countless recreational activities for the whole family. Through well-maintained parks, trails, golf courses and modern facilities, staying active is easy for residents of all ages and abilities.

The Kankakee Valley Park District manages more than 30 parks and facilities in Kankakee, including the new Washington Skate Park, Bird Park Family Fun Station, Ice Valley Centre Ice Arena, Splash Valley Aquatic Park and the expanding River Road Park. The latter is an award-winning park featuring the PNC Bank River Road Softball Complex and, new in spring 2012, RV and tent campgrounds and an off-leash dog park. The Bourbonnais Township Park District oversees several parks and facilities in the area, including the new Diamond Point Park

Sports Complex, Willowhaven Interpretive Center, Recreation Station and, notably, Perry Farm Park. Perry Farm is one of the area’s most popular places for recreation. The farm offers four miles of paved multi-use paths, Oak Meadows, an Indian cave geological area, a fruit orchard, rose gardens, picnic areas, playgrounds, a living history farm and the Exploration Station children’s museum.

Opportunities for enjoying outdoor recreation are available through several other sites throughout the county, as well. The 4,000-acre Kankakee River State Park, positioned just six miles northwest of Kankakee, is full of history and outlets for enjoying hunting, fishing, canoeing, camping, picnicking, horseback riding and hiking. The Forest Preserves of the Kankakee River Valley operates six sites in the area, including the Shannon Bayou Environmental Education Center, Aroma Land & Water Preserve, the Gar Creek Trail & Prairie Restoration Site, the Waldron Arboretum, Strasma Grove and the Limestone Reforestation Site. Additionally, Kankakee County hosts three fine golf courses – Kankakee Country Club, Oak Springs Golf Course, Kankakee Elks Golf Club, Aspen Ridge Golf Course, Manteno Golf Course and South Shore Golf Course.

The Kankakee Area YMCA operates a well-equipped facility that recently underwent a renovation and expansion project. The Y, along with numerous other fitness centers in the area, including Riverside Health & Fitness, Fitness Premier in Bourbonnais and Manteno, Studio Fitness, Impact Fitness and Body Works for Women, provide modern amenities and excellent programming to accommodate every fitness need. All of these resources come together to offer hundreds of outstanding recreational and enrichment programs for youths, teens and adults. From aquatics instruction and sports leagues to senior activities, day camp and arts classes, there’s something for everyone through the Kankakee Valley Park District, Bourbonnais Township Park District and Kankakee Area YMCA. he Kankakee County area is bursting with culture, featuring a fantastic mix of entertainment venues, events and performing and visual arts organizations.

Catch a movie at Cinemark Movies 10 Theatre at the Northfield Square Mall in Bradley, the Meadowview Shopping Center Theatre or the historic Paramount Theatre – a fully refurbished 20th century theatre. Or, for those partial to live theatre, make sure to check out the Kankakee Valley Theatre Association (comprised of the Kankakee Valley Theatre and Young Peoples Theatre) and the Acting Out Theatre Company, a troupe that presents summertime outdoor theatre at Perry Farm. The Kankakee Valley Symphony Orchestra also has a strong presence in the area, performing at various sites, including Olivet Nazarene University’s Centennial Chapel. The university’s Larsen Fine Arts Center, along with the multipurpose Majestic Theatre provide further sites for enjoying live entertainment in Kankakee County.

The Community Arts Council of Kankakee County strives to promote, develop, coordinate and stimulate participation in the arts throughout the area. The CAC manages the Metro Centre Art Gallery in Bourbonnais and offers an assortment of programs and events, including the Fall Arts Stroll (cosponsored with the Kankakee Event Partnership) and the Strawberry Jazz Festival.

Additional local events and celebrations happen throughout the year in Kankakee County. Some of these events include the Bourbonnais Friendship Festival; the Klash on the Kankakee, consisting of 18th century camp life complete with food, games, demonstrations and a reenactment of a battle between British forces and the American Colonists; the Olde Time Farm Show; Sleepy Hollow; the Annual Les Artisans Arts & Crafts Show and the lighted Evening Christmas Parade. Visitors also take pleasure in local agri-tourism, as well as family fun at the Hidden Cove Sportsplex – a year-round destination with everything from basketball courts, an indoor soccer arena and bumper cars to miniature golf, batting cages, a go-kart track and a paintball field. The Exploration Station A Children’s Museum, based at Perry Farm, offers children the chance to learn through diverse hands-on experiences. Exhibits include a new multi-level medieval castle, an emergency room and ambulance, a science laboratory and much more.

here are plenty of interesting things to see and do throughout the area. From places of history to professional sports, it is enjoyable spending a day out and about in Kankakee County.

Explore the history of the area through the Bourbonnais Grove Historical Society’s Letourneau Home Museum (the original home of the community’s first mayor George R. Letourneau) and the Kankakee County Historical Society Museum. Both museums house distinct local artifacts and archives. The KCHS also recently opened the Kankakee County French Heritage Museum in spring 2012. The museum features a great collection of French history from both Kankakee and Iroquois counties. Additional historical sites not to be missed include the Kankakee Railroad Museum, the Bronte History of Printing Museum, Frank Lloyd Wright’s B. Harley Bradley House and the county’s Barn Quilt Tour. This unique self-guided tour – the first countywide barn quilt tour in the state – is comprised of more than 40 barns located across Kankakee County, all adorned with an 8’x8’ wooden block designed with a colorful, hand-painted quilt pattern.

Sports enthusiasts don’t have travel to Chicago to experience exciting professional athletics. The Chicago Bears have held their training camp at Olivet Nazarene University for more than 10 years. Each summer, thousands of fans visit the area to catch a glimpse of the upcoming season. Fans are able to watch the Bears play for free, get autographs and pictures with their favorite players, and take part in various family oriented events. The area also hosts the Kankakee Plowmen semi-pro football team and the Kankakee County Soldiers professional basketball team. Downtown Kankakee is another popular place for unique shopping and dining. This central district hosts the Kankakee Farmers’ Market, a seasonal, open-air market held April through
