As the Sandhill Crane Capital of the World, we are proud of the millions of years that the cranes have stopped to rest in our unique habitat on their migration north in the spring and south in the fall. We are working hard to maintain this habitat so that this migration will continue for millions of years more. There are many cultural activities that you will want to include in your visit: the Museum of Nebraska Art, Trails and Rails Museum and the Great Platte River Road Archway Monument. The monument celebrates the human migration from east to west through Nebraska via the Morman, Oregon and California Trails. The Kearney community is a vibrant and growing community, currently building two new elementary schools, and expanding two schools. The recent completion of the Petersen Sr. Activity Center, a new hospital, and new addition to Good Samaritan Hospital, a new conference center and a new multi-purpose building on the Buffalo County Fairgrounds. Kearney’s prosperous way of life today was shaped by its early pioneers and 49ers as they united at Fort Kearny while going after their dreams along the Mormon, Oregon and California trails. The future would bring the Pony Express, Overland Stage, Union Pacific Railroad and Lincoln Highway through Kearney as they linked the east and west, developing a continental nation. Although many of those traversing the early trails were headed for areas farther west, some ambitious travelers identified the vast possibilities along the “Great Platte River Road,” choosing to settle in the area.
HISTORY
Fort Kearny, earning its name from Colonel Stephen Watts Kearny, was constructed in 1848 to protect those journeying west along the Oregon Trail. During an 18-month period around the Gold Rush, more than 30,000 pioneers heading west trekked through Fort Kearny, ultimately establishing the site as an early crossroads and stopping place.
In the summer of 1871, Anselmo B. Smith surveyed the town site, with the plot of land filed with the county clerk shortly after on October 27, 1871. The city was incorporated soon after, in 1881.
The first half of the new century experienced steady growth and development, and by 1930 its population reached 8,575.
The treasured heritage of Kearney is still seen through many facets of community life. Annual events, monuments and museums all portray the community’s significant history, ensuring the memories of its past lives on for generations to come. )
With the completion of Interstate 80 in 1964, Kearney was faced with an upsurge of tourist trade, which, in turn, facilitated the development of modern lodging options and dining establishments. Kearney was recognized as one of Nebraska’s fastest-growing cities of 20,000 or more during the 1990s and is currently home to more than 30,000 residents, as of 2010. Workforce numbers increased simultaneously, providing the growing number of area businesses with a continually expanding supply of potential employees.

Despite a series of setbacks just before the turn of the century, the town began to bounce back to life. By 1904, the foundation was put in place for the current-day University of Nebraska at Kearney, with classes commencing in the same year—the initial class was comprised of merely 96 students.

The community ultimately derived its name from Fort Kearny, though the spelling is clearly different. The additional “e” in Kearney is attributed to a spelling error made by the post office. By the time it became apparent that an extra “e” was added to the community name, residents did not feel it was necessary to change the name back to its intended spelling.

Kearney’s favorable location within central Nebraska—a state many refer to as the “Heartland of America”— affords it convenient access to many of the nation’s major metropolitan markets. Many transportation options can be reached from the city, as Nebraska provides an extensive web of highway and railway corridors offering access to both coasts, plus the Gulf of Mexico via ports along the Missouri River. The city, situated in Buffalo County, sits along the north bank of the great Platte River, approximately 186 miles west of Omaha. Interstate 80, U.S. Highway 30 and State Highways 10, 40 and 44, along with a vast network of local roadways, advantageously serve the Kearney community. KEARNEY AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

A main line of the Union Pacific Railroad benefits the city, providing approximately 100 freight trains daily. In fact, the railroad affords nearly 1,400 total inbound and outbound cars annually. For commuter use, Amtrak is available through a station in nearby Holdrege—a short 30-mile drive from Kearney. The city oversees the operations of the Kearney Municipal Airport, which provides the region with opportunities for passenger, air freight and air express services. The airport houses more than 60 aircraft and fields around 20,000 operations annually. Facilities at Kearney Municipal include two runways and six taxiways, complemented by a multitude of services such as fuel, maintenance and repair, towing, pilot training, hangar storage, tie down and transportation options—among others.

Several additional transportation resources serve residents of the Kearney community, offering convenient local and regional travel options. Direct access from Kearney to Omaha, Lincoln, Grand Island, Hastings and York, plus the local charter service,
is offered through Eppley Express shuttle service. Eppley Express also operates Kearney’s Trolleys—Carl and Rosie—providing chartered package tours for both residents and tourists to many of the area’s popular attractions, plus charter services for a variety of uses. R.Y.D.E. (Reach Your Destination Easily) provides affordable public transit to all residents of Kearney to a number of destinations throughout Buffalo County. R.Y.D.E. also works closely with Kearney Cab Company when transportation services are unavailable. The Kearney Cab Company serves the community with cabs 24 hours a day, seven days a week. )

RECREATION Opportunities for recreation are abundant in the Kearney community with such excellent entities as the Kearney Park and Recreation Department, the Kearney Family YMCA and several health facilities all providing residents of any age with a variety of activities and programs. Recreational sites not to be missed in the area include the 150-plus-acre Fort Kearny State Recreation Area and the Tri-City BMX Track.

The Peterson Senior Activity Center’s mission is to support the independence and well-being of adults 50 and older, enhance their dignity and self respect, promote their participation in all aspects of community life through creative programming and providing opportunities and resources in the areas of physical and mental well-being, nutrition, recreation and education.
o KEARNEY PARK & RECREATION DEPARTMENT The Kearney Park and Recreation Department offers residents a number of facilities and recreational areas, as well as a full range of year-round programming for all ages. The department oversees 14 city parks, most notably the 80acre Yanney Heritage Park, the 100-acre Cottonmill Park and the Meadowlark North Dog Park. Amenities found through the city parks include everything from ball diamonds; soccer fields; basketball and tennis courts; and areas for swimming, boating and fishing to disc golf, picnic sites, 14 miles of hiking and biking trails and playground equipment.

Serving more than 5,000 members in the community, the Kearney Family YMCA is a modern facility equipped with two full-sized gyms, racquetball courts, two tracks, a pool, group exercise studios, a fitness center and much more. The YMCA’s diverse programs are available for members of all ages. This facility is the only YMCA in the country to offer free membership to residents 80 years of age and older.
Operated jointly by the city and county, the Cottonmill Lake Recreation Area includes 98 acres of land and a 43-acre lake for fishing, paddle boating and swimming. There is also a separate pond designated for swimming. Picnicking, walking natural and hardsurfaced trails and visiting the nature barn are other activities enjoyed by visitors. Winter sports include cross-country skiing, sledding, ice-skating and ice-fishing.
o FORT KEARNY STATE RECREATION AREA The Fort Kearny State Recreation Area is 152 acres of outdoor beaches, swimming, fishing, camping, picnicking and the 1.8-mile Fort Kearny Hike Bike Trail—with one bridge over the Platte River. Showers and changing rooms are available. The area is located just one mile east of the historical park, and a Nebraska State Park Permit is required. )
Serious nature photographers may use one of three photo blinds set up close to the major crane roost sites on the river. A Rivers and Wildlife Celebration (Spring River Conference) is held in Kearney in March. The conference provides the opportunity to learn more about the Platte River, cranes, prairies and conservation efforts. Fossil records indicate that the cranes have been visiting the Platte River region for millions of years. For six weeks each spring, visitors have the opportunity to experience the sights and sounds of 90 percent of the world’s sandhill cranes, when they stay long enough to build up the strength to continue their migration.

Visitors view cranes from enclosed observation blinds on guided field trips during March and early April. Owned and managed by the National Audubon Society, the original purchase of 782 acres in 1974, which was funded by Lillian Annette Rowe, included 2.5 miles of river channel, wet meadows and some agricultural fields. Additional land acquisitions have increased the current size to 1,248 acres. The Iain Nicolson Audubon Center at the Rowe Sanctuary is the second largest straw bale-constructed building in the United States. The building provides indoor classrooms, educational displays, conference rooms, a viewing area of the river and much more. With the center, year-round education opportunities exist for local schools and the general public.

o COTTONMILL LAKE
The first sign that spring is coming is brought by the sights and sounds of nearly half a million sandhill cranes. This is the largest gathering of sandhill cranes in the world. The cranes stop at the Platte River during their annual northern migration from their wintering areas in the southern United States and Mexico. There are also geese, ducks, bald eagles and other waterfowl to be observed in wetland areas. Audubon Nebraska’s Rowe Sanctuary is central Nebraska’s only wildlife sanctuary located on the main channel of the Platte River.

Athletics of all types can be easily found in the Kearney area, with a host of leagues, clubs and associations available to athletes of all ages. Area schools, from elementary through university level, give students the opportunity to participate in such sports as basketball, football, baseball, softball, volleyball, soccer, swimming, tennis and track.

The Kearney Park and Recreation Department (KPR) operates a public 18-hole golf course. Meadowlark Hills Golf Course is a championship course featuring beautiful views of the Platte River Valley. In addition to the wellmaintained course is a driving range and putting green, as well as the opportunity to take advantage of professional golf lessons. Kearney is also in proximity to several additional golf courses, not operated by the KPR. These courses include the family-owned Prairie Hills Golf Course, Buffalo Hills Golf Course, the private Kearney Country Club, Kearney Elks Country Club and Awarii Dunes. The Nebraska School Activities Association (NSAA) has held, and continues to hold, a number of events within Kearney, including the Cross Country, Debate, Boys Golf, Play Production and Speech state championships.

The University of Nebraska at Kearney (UNK) offers 16 NCAA Division II intercollegiate sports, each competing in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC). UNK regained the RMAC All-Sports Competition Cup after their 11-year reign was broken last year. This makes the 12th time in school history the Lopers have won the cup. For those looking to play for fun, the university offers a full range of intramural sports, including flag football, indoor soccer, volleyball, softball, basketball, racquetball, tennis, water polo and wallyball.
The Nebraska State Senior Games, held in the Kearney community, was created for people 50 years of age and older to participate in friendly competition each year. The assortment of events include archery, bowling, cycling, golf, disc golf, tennis, table tennis, badminton, wellness walk, road race, swimming, horseshoes, billiards, track and field, free throw shooting, and 3-on3 basketball. Kearney stands as a qualifying site for the National Senior Games. This qualifying happens each evennumbered year in the city. )

The UNK-Health and Sports Center and the new Kearney Catholic Cope Coliseum each play host to Mr. Basketball and Miss Basketball youth and high school tournaments and events, drawing in a number of teams from up to 20 states, plus hundreds of college scouts and coaches from all over the country. In 2008, more than 800 teams will participate in these tournaments organized by Mr. Basketball, Inc.

A member of the United States Hockey League (USHL)—an amateur league for leading hockey players between the ages of 16 and 20—Tri-City Storm Hockey strives every regular season to claim the coveted Anderson Cup Title—last received in the 20032004 season. The Anderson Cup is an accolade given to the team holding the best record in the USHL. Upon a successful regular season, the team has the chance to take the highest reward, the Clark Cup, in the playoff round. Games are held at the 5,000-seat Viaero Event Center.

One of Kearney’s greatest strengths is its rich heritage, which has been preserved in museums, parks and historical sites throughout the community.
o CLASSIC CAR COLLECTION The New Classic Car Collection is the best public car attraction between Chicago and Denver that includes more than 130 vintage automobiles from the early 1900s to the 1980s. The Collection is housed in a 50,000-sq.-ft. space in the Kearney Cabela’s building. The Classic Car Collection was created to house automobiles donated by Bernie and Janice Taulborg and will open in the summer of 2011.
o THE G.W. FRANK HOUSE KEARNEY AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Constructed in 1889 as George Washington Frank’s third mansion, the three-story house is made of Colorado sandstone and features a genuine 5-by-10-foot Tiffany stained glass window. The house, listed on the National Register of Historical Places, was deeded to the University of Nebraska at Kearney in 1972 and has experienced ongoing renovations ever since. Today, the G.W. Frank House is utilized as a biographical house museum and is open for guided public touring every Saturday from February through April between 10:30-11:30 a.m., and Tuesday through Saturday from Memorial Day through Labor Day between 1:00-5:00 p.m.
o FORT KEARNY STATE HISTORICAL PARK Initially built to protect travelers along the Overland Trail, Fort Kearny today is comprised of an interpretive center, a blacksmith-carpenter shop, powder magazine and split log stockade, together depicting the story of this old-time oasis.

o GREAT PLATTE RIVER ROAD ARCHWAY Designed to bring the westward migration to life, the Great Platte River Road Archway is home to two levels of interactive exhibits, spanning from the history of the Great Platte River Road from the days of the Oregon Trail to today and beyond. The site, which stands as the only historical,
educational monument that spans an interstate, also features the TrailBlaze Maze, a unique 4,800-square-foot labyrinth.
o KIDZONE-KEARNEY AREA CHILDREN’S MUSEUM After a recent major expansion and remodeling project, KidZone-Kearney Area Children’s Museum now offers 13,000 square feet of exciting opportunities for children and families to learn through creative play. Exhibit zones include such educational areas as agriculture, automobile, bank, grocery, science, theatre/music and water—among others.
o MORRIS PRESS COOKBOOKS COLLECTION Morris Press, the country’s largest publisher of fundraiser, business and keepsake cookbooks, welcomes visitors to peruse through its shop lined with thousands of cookbooks—starting at only $2. Upon entering the shop, located along East Highway 30, visitors are presented with a free cookbook.
o PIONEER VILLAGE One of Nebraska’s leading attractions, Pioneer Village, is a short 15-minute drive south of Kearney. The 20-acre historical site features live demonstrations and 28 buildings arranged in chronological order of development, together housing more than 50,000 historic items portraying America’s progress since 1830. Prominent structures include a Pony Express station, an historic country church circa 1884, a blacksmith shop, an one-room school house, a historic general store and a historic sod house, as well as an 1800’s steam carousel operating during the summer months.
o TRAILS AND RAILS MUSEUM Visitors delight in the Trails and Rails Museum, which traces the history of transportation through the Buffalo County area by featuring distinct displays such as a Union Pacific steam engine, an 1871 school house, an 1878 depot, an 1898 church, the circa-1880s Freighters Hotel, a log cabin and much more. )

Discover the art of Nebraska at the extensive Museum of Nebraska Art, the state’s official art collection. Housed in a circa 1911 Renaissance Revival structure (listed on the National Register of Historic Places) is a permanent collection of more than 5,000 works of art spanning a 200year period. View art representing the work of artist-explorers such as John James Audubon and George Catlin, early Nebraskan Robert Henri and modern-era artists Thomas Hart Benton and Wright Morris. After walking through the galleries, take a stroll outside through the Cliff Hilleglass Sculpture Garden and visit the Hitchock Education Gallery.

o KEARNEY COMMUNITY THEATRE Part of the Kearney community for more than 40 years, Kearney Community Theatre offers an excellent schedule of live theatrical performances every year, along with a number of special events. The Buffalo County Fairgrounds offers three superb facilities equipped with the flexibility to serve a range of conventions and events throughout the year. The Exposition Center, newly completed in 2010, features a 52,500-square-foot concrete floor area with bleachers that retract. This new arena can seat more than 5,500 people. Also in the Exposition Center, the East Arena has 28,600 square feet. This building contains concessions and meeting and office space to serve your event. Additional acres of outdoor exhibit space can accommodate up to 5,000 guests. The city of Kearney is operated as a councilmanager form of government. Under this specific form, the city council acts as the legislative and policy-making body in the community. The city council is comprised of five members elected at-large to serve four-year overlapping terms. The council members elect one member to serve as the president of the council, who in turn is recognized as the mayor.

The city council appoints a city manager to serve as the administrative official in charge of both recommending and enacting council policies, overseeing daily operations, preparing the annual budget, directing the city workforce, and a number of additional undertakings. The city council meets the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the City Council Chambers. The meetings are televised for public viewing on Cable Channel 6. Additionally, Kearney is the seat of Buffalo County, adding county administration to the mix. A sevenmember board of supervisors, elected from seven districts, oversees the activities of the county.

The city government is on-line, allowing access to government meeting agendas, regulations and a number of further public documents. Enhanced 9-1-1 services provide the safety and protection benefits that Buffalo County residents rely on, while improved communications keep law enforcement and other public officials in touch with each other and the community. Operations shared with Buffalo County are the Library Bookmobile, Solid Waste Agency Landfill, Emergency Management, Cottonmill Park and the Law Enforcement Center.
Since 1883, Kearney has been served by the Kearney Volunteer Fire Department (KVFD), which stands as the state’s second largest volunteer fire department. The KVFD is served by 75 volunteer members, plus an 11-member staff comprised of eight firefighters/operators, a fire administrator, an administrative assistant and a secretary throughout three stations. The department is also equipped with a training facility and an airport station for ARFF response. More than 270 square miles in Kearney and the Suburban Fire Protection District #1 are covered by the KVFD—which totals approximately 40,000 residents. )

The KPD and the Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office make up a unique collaboration in the community. In July of 1993, the two entities both located into downtown Kearney’s modern Law Enforcement Center, located at 2025 Avenue A, representing a model for inter-governmental cooperation throughout Nebraska and the central states. The city of Kearney owns the facility, and services are offset by each agency to avoid duplication and additional expense to the taxpayer.

The Kearney Police Department (KPD) stands as a dynamic and progressive law enforcement agency, servicing the community through public safety initiatives, emergency response, educational programming and much more. The community enjoys a relatively low crime rate, with the department maintaining a crime-clearance rate well above the national average. The KPD is equipped with 48 sworn officers, six clerical staff members and four community service officers (two full time and two part time).

Average seasonal snowfall is around 29 inches, with snowfall usually increasing during late winter— ultimately reaching a maximum in March. Maximum daily temperatures exceeding 105° F have occurred in the four summer months, while subzero temperatures occur, on average, about 15 days each year. EDUCATION Nebraska students consistently achieve among the best average scores in the nation for both the Scholastic Achievement Test (SAT) and the American College Testing (ACT). Additionally, graduation rates are usually at or above 95 percent, with 90 percent choosing the path to higher educational opportunities.

Superior education is a strong facet of community life in Kearney, with area schools successfully producing well-educated, motivated and productive students. The Kearney Public Schools (KPS) system has dedicated itself to providing excellence in education for residents of the area, recently earning the Blue Ribbon Award from Expansion Management magazine and the What Parents Want Award from SchoolMatch. The district serves a total of nearly 5,000 students within its three preschools, 12 elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school. The system’s elementary schools serve approximately 2,577 students, with a teacher-to-pupil ratio of 1:21. The KPS middle schools have approximately 1,043 students with a teacher-to-pupil ratio of 1:14. The high school has approximately 1,463 students enrolled with a teacher-to-pupil ratio of 1:18. Kearney’s positive growth has resulted in the need for additional elementary schools. Currently, construction is underway on two new elementary schools; one will house three classes, each of Kindergarten through 5th
grade, and the other will provide two classes, each of Kindergarten through 5th grade. Additionally Meadowlark Elementary is adding on an additional unit of Kindergarten through 5th grade to its existing two units. Kearney High School, built in 1959, has experienced significant expansion to accommodate the growing student population and necessary technology and equipment. Administrators, staff and parents associated with Kearney Public Schools are working to create an environment that fosters mutual respect, inspires the love of learning and expects excellence from all.

Central Community College (CCC) serves 25 counties in central Nebraska and offers a center within the Kearney community. The Economic Development Council of Buffalo County is a countywide, nonprofit corporation. The Council is made up of 11 board and seven ex-officio members. The mission statement of the
Council is to facilitate economic growth and development of primary business in Buffalo County and the region that contributes to a healthy economy and enhances our quality of life. The Council maintains the utmost level of confidentiality and is not subject to public disclosure of projects. Companies can bring projects to the Council and, depending on investment and job creation, the Council may determine a business package to assist the company in accomplishing the investment and job creation objectives.

The Council’s action plan focuses on the satisfaction and development of the primary employment sector and the source of new dollars flowing into the community from outside. In addition, the Council responds to questions about the community, county and state from those employers wishing to consider a new primary location. The Council has identified advanced manufacturing, logistics/distribution, data centers and back office/fulfillment centers as our target industries. Approximately 2,000 acres of land in Kearney and Buffalo County are zoned for manufacturing or industrial uses. About 350 acres are located on land controlled by the Kearney Airport Authority and will be available for appropriate industrial use. In addition, the city of Kearney has secured ownership of 116.1 acres dedicated to economic development projects that increase the community’s diversity of high-tech industry. This acreage known as TECH oNE Crossing provides for extensive and immediately available technology and power infrastructure suitable to high-end data centers. The city has entrusted the marketing and incentive planning of TECH oNE Crossing to the Council.

o AGRICULTURE Agriculture remains Nebraska’s principal industry and chief source of income, with approximately 45.6-million acres—or 93 percent—of its total land area consisting of farms and ranches. Each year, Nebraska farm products contribute more than $15 billion in cash receipts to the U.S. economy, placing it fourth in the nation for this industry. Buffalo County consistently ranks in the top 10 counties in Nebraska in the production of alfalfa hay, corn and beef. In 2010, Nebraska ranked second in ethanol production, utilizing 40 percent of the state’s corn. The Kearney Area Ag Producers Alliance (KAAPA) seeks to obtain ample opportunities to increase member profits and net income by providing its members with possibilities to produce, or invest in, value added agriculture, while offering the public new products and benefits. Agritourism is a vital venture the area producers are supporting in order to increase the area’s profitability.

Supporting Nebraska’s largest agricultural industry, the Nebraska Beef Council represents the cattle producers in the state by strengthening demand for beef in the global marketplace. Good Samaritan Hospital recently expanded its NICU into a 10,352-square-foot space on its second floor. That space features nine new “personal NICU” rooms designed to promote a baby’s growth and wellness through special lighting, acoustics and alarm systems that accommodate the unique developmental needs of premature, sick and multiple-birth infants while creating a private bonding space for the family.

In the summer of 2012, GSH will open a 64,000-square-foot expansion that includes the Ron and Carol Cope Heart Center. The Heart Center will feature new cardiac catheterization labs, a full non-invasive cardiovascular testing area and operating rooms equipped and sized for open heart surgery. The expansion will also create new operating rooms, new endoscopy suites, a new surgery gathering area for families, hallways that are more convenient for visitors, a new dining room and new kitchen.
