euter and Erie Indians were the first to inhabit Tonawanda, who named the land after the swift current of the Niagara River, or so it is believed. French missionaries and explorers began to move to the area in the 1600s; soon after traders, settlers and military members followed, creating an important crossroads in the westward expansion of the country. The British captured the territory in 1759, which eventually became a part of the U.S. After completely burning down in the War of 1812, the Erie Canal was built in the 1820s, which brought in new workers and settlers. The canal linked Lake Erie to the Hudson River allowing for more traffic and trade in Tonawanda.

The village of Kenmore was incorporated from part of Tonawanda in 1899. Louis Eberhart, known as “Father Kenmore,� bought up farmland and then subdivided it into suburban developments, creating the village.

Today Kenmore, along with the Town of Tonawanda, boasts a population of 73,488 with real property valued at over $2 billion. With close proximity to Buffalo and the Canadian border it is a small town with big city amenities.

esidents of Kenmore and the Town of Tonawanda reside in comfortable homes with tree-lined streets in established and recently built neighborhoods. No matter the neighborhood, they all share a common pride of home ownership. From spacious mansions to modest homes, residents of Ken-Ton all care about the appearance of their community, creating unity and pride within the neighborhoods and throughout town. Kenmore hosts an annual Garden Walk, which is quickly gaining popularity among residents. This sense of pride earned Kenmore the honor of being “One of the Top 10 Great Neighborhoods� in 2009 by the American Planning Association. Tonawanda also received a similar honor.

ne does not have to look far for terrific shopping and dining opportunities in and around Ken-Ton. From antique stores, boutiques, candy shops, jewelry and cosmetic stores one can find just about anything they need right in town.

Locally owned shops and nationally recognized brand stores can be found here as well. In nearby Amherst, the Boulevard Mall provides a one-stop place to get everything one could need.

Buffalo’s Elmwood Avenue strip is another close option for an eclectic collection of specialty shops, bistros and nightlife.

en-Ton is situated between two major metropolitan centers, Buffalo and Niagara Falls, allowing for a great diversity of recreational, cultural and entertainment opportunities. A variety of different interests have created a generous mix of different opportunities for visitors and residents alike.

For scenic opportunities, no place in the U.S. or the world compares to half-mile wide Canadian Horseshoe Falls and the 176-foot-tall American Falls, which attracts 12 million visitors annually. These outdoor spaces showcase the natural beauty of Western New York at its finest. For those looking to get to know wildlife, the Buffalo Zoo is just a short drive away and allows visitors a chance to observe a wide variety of exotic and domestic animals year-round in naturalistic habitats.

In-town spectator and participant sporting events are just the start of events and recreational opportunities, which reflect the interests of residents. There seems to be an outlet for everyone here, from bridge tournaments and baseball to neighborhood cookouts and charitable events. In the community of Ken-Ton everyone can find something to do in a variety of different interests. There are also an abundance of festivals and town events that are fun for everyone. Weekly Farmers’ Markets, during the summer and fall, provide the freshest produce around. Other fun events include Kenmore Days, a four-day carnival, put on by the village and the Kenmore Merchants Association; and during those chilly months Santa’s Arrival is accompanied by a treelighting ceremony and a holiday sing-a-long and bonfire.

For out-of-town visitors looking to rest their head after a long day of exploring the Ken-Ton area, there are plenty of options. From traditional hotels and motels, to charming bed and breakfasts and even castles, visitors will have no problem finding a place suitable to stay. Places to stay in Ken-Ton offer a small-town charm in a picturesque setting, while hotels in nearby areas like Buffalo and Amherst offer great proximity to shops, restaurants and activities.

For visitors looking for a little education while they have fun, the Explore & More Children’s Museum, The Buffalo Museum of Science, or the Buffalo and Erie County Naval and Military Park allow for learning opportunities in a fun, enjoyable environment for kids and adults alike. The Albright-Knox Art Gallery is a popular attraction located just north of Kenmore, opposite scenic Hoyt Lake and the Buffalo State University Campus.

For those looking to enjoy cultural opportunities indoors, the area boasts nearby musical halls, such as Kleinhans, which is home to the Buffalo Philharmonic. Shea’s Performing Arts Center hosts world renowned plays and musical performances. The HSBC Arena is home to the Buffalo Sabres NHL team as well as the Buffalo Bandits lacrosse team. Summer concerts are abundant at multiple indoor and outdoor venues within a short drive from Ken-Ton. Ken-Ton is also in close proximity to Ralph Wilson Stadium, home of the Buffalo Bills.

Coca-Cola Field is home to the Buffalo Bison baseball team, and serves as the site of Buffalo’s annual chicken wing festival every Labor Day weekend.

he business and industrial base of Kenmore and Tonawanda is among the most diverse in the region as well as the state. This is due to the location of larger industries along the waterfront and its close proximity to Canada. A close proximity to an international border has become very important in recent years and a major reason businesses have chosen to make this area their home,

and its location in the heart of the Niagara Region provides natural resources and markets throughout Western New York and southern Ontario.

Multi-national corporations such as 3M, Dunlop, FMC, General Motors, Praxir and Unifrax all call this area home. These well-known companies were brought to this area because of an abundant supply of water and low-cost power. Facilities for these and other companies range from multi-tenant facilities and industrial parks to large industry-heavy complexes.

The Riverview Solar Technology Park is one of these places for businesses to flourish. The 180-acre business park opened in 2007 and is located next to the Niagara River. Tenants of this park are able to receive all or a portion of their energy needs generated from onsite solar facilities. This New York State Shovel Ready Certified Solar Park focuses on green energy and preserves natural surroundings while still providing an economic vehicle to benefit the community. The idea surrounding the park was to attract organizations and institutions that will take full advantage of the benefits that are made available. Currently there are two existing multi-tenant buildings.
