HISTORY
exas A&M University– Kingsville grew out of the teacher college or “normal school” movement that swept Texas and the nation in the early 1900s. Chartered in 1917 but not opened until 1925 because of America’s entry into World War I, the university is the oldest continuously operating public institution of higher learning in South Texas. Shortly after beginning life as South Texas State Teachers College, its role was expanded to embrace a wider array of programs. As its mission has expanded, its name has changed to reflect its wider scope. Its first name change, to Texas College of Arts and Industries, came in 1929. In 1967 the name changed to Texas A&I University. The university became a member of the Texas A&M University System in 1989 and in 1993 changed its name to Texas A&M University–Kingsville to reflect that membership. d

HISTORY ingsville is largely considered the “birthplace of the ranching industry.” Early settlers called the area, later to be known as Kingsville, the “Wild Horse Desert.” The land was purchased in 1853 by Captain Richard E. King, who fenced in and cleared the land of Native Americans with the help of his family and an entire Mexican village. These villagers went on to become some of Texas’s first true cowboys, and even today, these Kineños (“King’s Men”) can be seen around Kingsville. Henrietta King, who provided a generous portion of her land to the city, made the local area churches, schools and college possible by her charitable donation. Captain and Henrietta King later had the settlement named after them.

The King Ranch still exists today, allowing visitors to step back into time and explore the fascinating cowboy history via guided tour. The tour begins at the historic Santa Gertrudis Creek, where Captain King first camped in 1852. Historic buildings featured on the tour include Mrs. King’s Carriage House, the Commissary and lookout tour and the home built in 1912 by Henrietta, who was then Captain King’s widow. The modern-day aspects of the ranch—the auction arena, horse cemetery and the Colony, the home of the Kineños, are featured in the tour as well. Visitors also may visit the King Ranch Museum. In 1913, Texas legislators created the county of Kleberg, naming Kingsville as the county seat. Shortly thereafter, various events spurred the growth of Kingsville, such as the discovery of gas and oil and the arrivals of South Texas State Teacher’s College (now known as Texas A&M University–Kingsville), the U.S. Navy and Celanese, a global producer of specialty and intermediate anemical products.

Kingsville also offers a surplus of dining options, including barbecue, family-style, fast food, Mexican, Asian, Italian and fine dining. Because Texas is so well known for its Mexican- and American-inspired “Tex Mex” cuisine, it should come as no surprise that Mexican restaurants line the streets. If Mexican isn’t for you, never fear—there are plenty of other options, including American fare like Big House Bar BQ, Big House Burger and Gem’s Pancake House; fast food like Arby’s, Burger King, Dairy Queen, McDonald’s, Kentucky Fried Chicken and Sonic; Asian like Bua’s Thai Café, Taiwan Family Restaurant and Yen Ching; pizza and Italian like Pizza Parlor, Young’s Pizza and Domino’s; and specialty and fine dining like Baffin Bay Café, Daddy O’s Bar & Grill, King’s Inn and the Cherry Tree Tea Room. Visit the Kingsville Texas Convention & Visitors Center at www.kingsvilletexas.com for a more inclusive listing of area dining establishments. d

esidents of Kingsville enjoy wildlife, especially where bird watching is concerned. Kingsville is home to over 450 species of birds, including five breeds of oriole; 25 raptor species; a large count of Harris’ Hawks, Whitetailed Hawks and Crested Caracara; and the largest populations of nesting Tropical Parulas and Furruginous Pygmy Owls.
R
While King Ranch is an ideal place to explore Kingsville’s history, it is also optimal bird watching territory. King Ranch covers 825,000 acres, its claim to fame being that the only two registered cattle breeds developed in the United States were founded at King Ranch. The ranch offers several tours, such as the Wildlife Half-Day, a 3.5 hour tour of local wildlife including over 50 species of birds, and the Bird Watching Day Tour, an eight-nine hour exploration of White-tailed Hawks, Ferruginous Pygmy Owls, Botteri’s Sparrows, Audubon’s Orioles and several more species. Birding enthusiasts might also be interested in the Private Nature Tour or the Deluxe Private Bird Watching Tour, both up to eight hours in length and scheduled with special interests, needs and schedules in mind. King Ranch visitors also frequent the King Ranch Saddle Shop to peruse the souvenirs after visiting the ranch.

Other historical sites worth visiting in Kingsville include the John E. Conner Museum and the 1904 Kingsville Train Depot Museum, but one of the largest and most advanced jet training centers in the U.S., Naval Air Station Kingsville, can be found in the city as well. Other outdoor entertainment includes water sports such as fishing and boating offered by Baffin Bay and the L.E. Ramey Golf Course, open year-round. The city of Kingsville also dots its annual calendar with several festivals, including the Old Fashioned 4th of July celebration, the South Texas Birding and Wildlife Festival, the Ranch Hand Breakfast, the Division II All-Star football game, known as the Cactus Bowl, and numerous rodeos, concerts and collegiate sporting events. For the musically inclined, the Kingsville Symphony Orchestra performs several times each year as well. Members of the orchestra have performed all over the world.
