HISTORY
P
erhaps noted as the only town bearing its name in the world, Maquoketa is truly one of a kind. Its name was derived from the Sauk and Fox Indian word “Makwok-eteg” meaning “there are bears.” Records show that the name was spelled more than a thousand different ways before officially becoming Maquoketa. In fact, the original plat of land here displayed the name Makoketa. The area welcomed its first permanent European settlers in January 1838. It was at this time that J.E. Goodenow and Lyman Bates arrived from upper New York on their way west with a wagon full of trade goods. The two young men settled in the future site of Maquoketa and were soon joined by other settlers, mostly from New York, the following year. The small town began to take shape and in 1840 Goodenow established a local post office under the name Springfield. Since that name already existed in other communities, a change of name was requested. On March 3, 1844, the name was officially changed to Maquoketa after the river flowing along its northern edge. Maquoketa was incorporated as a city in 1853 with a population of 300 residents. By 1870 the city, then dubbed the “Timber City” due to its abundance of trees, welcomed rail service. Three years later Maquoketa was designated the seat of government for Jackson County. The city has gradually continued to grow over the years, transforming from a primarily agricultural community into one that harbors an increasing presence of light industry. Its population has remained fairly consistent. Today, Maquoketa is home to a residential population of 6,141. The history of Maquoketa has been well preserved in a number of beautiful homes and structures. The city itself hosts nearly 40 sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places with 11
sites in the historic downtown, anchored on each end with the historic Hurst Hotel and the historic Decker Hotel & Restaurant. These sites also connect to the historic Pleasant Street District with the Andrew Carnegie historic Library and the historic Squiers Manor Bed & Breakfast along its many historic homes. Additionally, with the presence and hard work of the Jackson County Historical Society, local heritage lives on through the County Historical Museum complex and the new and expanding Clinton Engines Museum in Maquoketa. The route is named for Iowa artist Grant Wood, who celebrated the region’s gorgeous landscape in such works of art as “Stone City” and “Fall Plowing.” A list of attractions, art galleries, restaurants, golf courses, hotels, wineries, history and nature tours are located along the byway and presented in a Grant Wood Scenic Byway Brochure published by the state of Iowa. EDUCATION E ducation is an integral part of life in Maquoketa. While there are plenty of private and parochial schools available in the region, the majority of the community’s school-aged population enrolls through Maquoketa Community School District. Approximately 1,600 students attend one of four facilities operated by the district, including two elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. MCSD also offers a preschool program for children aged 4. MCSD is a progressive, student-centered district that has earned much recognition over the years in the areas of academics, athletics and the fine arts. The district offers a range of unique programming to help prepare students for the 21st century workplace through a variety of dual credit courses and career-oriented vocational academies through an extensive partnership with Clinton Community College. These academies include welding, logistics and information technology and the Project Lead the Way introduction to engineering program. In addition, students actively participate in 16 sports and more than 20 school clubs and groups. College-bound students do not have to travel out of town to access high quality higher education. In 2009, Eastern Iowa Community Colleges and Clinton Community College opened the modern Clinton Community College Maquoketa

BUSINESS & Industry
M
aquoketa boasts of a robust economy led by a diverse mix of businesses and industries. Maquoketa has a strong agricultural base, but in recent years has been seeing major growth in the light industrial sector. Among the community’s largest employers are: Family Dollar, which operates a distribution center in town; DAC, Inc., a not-forprofit agency offering employment and residential services to individuals with disabilities; HUSCO International, a world leader in the development and manufacturing of hydraulic and electrohydraulic controls for offhighway uses and Pacific Coast Feather, a leading manufacturer of down and synthetic-filled comforters and feather beds. Maquoketa also hosts manufacturers of plastics, automotive parts and metals, along with a full-line printer, a store display fixtures builder, a specialty feed manufacturer, custom fabrication and many other businesses and industries. Many reasons contribute to Maquoketa’s attractive business environment. For one, the entire city is a designated enterprise zone, which presents numerous incentives for qualified businesses. The city also features two industrial parks equipped with quality municipal utilities and services, a dedicated and skilled workforce and a unique, easily accessible location between Dubuque and the Quad Cities – only 2.5 hours from the Chicago metropolitan area.
19
In addition, thanks to such valuable resources as the Maquoketa Area Chamber of Commerce, Maquoketa maintains a pro-business mentality and embraces a strong entrepreneurial spirit. The Chamber is the lead organization in town for economic www.maquoketachamber.com
