A Historical Perspective A City With a Rich Past and Glowing Future Nestled within the heart of Iowa, Marshalltown embraces its dynamic “hometown” lifestyle, which is characterized by an ideal blend of rural and urban living. The enviable quality of life discovered in the city of today is owed in large part to the forwardthinking nature of early settlers and businessmen. Nearly a decade after the Sac and Fox Indians signed a treaty with the U.S. government to open up the land for settlement (1842), current-day Marshalltown welcomed its first settler. Henry Anson,

a now famous Iowa pioneer, chose the divide between Linn Creek and the Iowa River as the optimal site for a new town. Anson constructed his cabin on what is now Main Street, paving the way for settlement in the new town. Anson and his fellow settlers became friendly with a local Native American chief named Johnny Green (Che Muese) who provided much needed guidance to the men. By 1853, the town site was platted, taking on the name Marshall — which was soon changed to Marshalltown in 1862.
Through relentless continuous improvement and customer focus, we will be the highest quality supplier of innovative heating and cooling products manufactured in a safe and rewarding work environment. - Marshalltown Mission Statement
The settlement began to develop in the years prior to the Civil War, and by the mid 1850s, Anson made a land contribution for the building of a county courthouse. After struggles over the location of the county seat, Marshalltown was finally given the proud designation in 1863. After Johnny Green’s death in 1868, he was buried on a bluff overlooking the Des Moines River. A tribute to the Native American leader can be seen in the form of a significant monument that stands on the grounds of the Iowa Veterans Home. Marshalltown experienced much development in the ensuing years. Due to the advent of the railroad in town, Marshalltown was now well connected and became an attractive community for many light

industries. By the onset of the 20th century, Marshalltown emerged as an established city of more than 10,000 residents and quite a few industries that would ultimately evolve into major national and international corporations. Today, Marshalltown has transformed into a thriving city of more than 27,500 residents who take pleasure in the establishment of a diversified base of businesses, award-winning schools, esteemed medical facilities, modern shopping centers, well-maintained recreational and cultural amenities and high-quality residential areas. While the city looks to its future, its strong heritage remains present and continues to have a profound influence in every aspect of community life today.
IN THE arshalltown is truly in the middle of it all, as its central location in Iowa assures that residents, visitors and businesses are afforded the ease of travel to local, regional and national destinations. Marshalltown’s medial locality places it within onethird of Iowa’s population, with the state’s largest cities—Des Moines, Cedar Rapids and Waterloo—situated just 65 miles outside of the community. The city is located along U.S. Route 30—a major east-west corridor in the state—and Iowa Highway 14. It is also in proximity to Iowa Highway 330 (seven miles west) as well as interstates 35 (35 miles west) and 80 (30 miles south). The city of Marshalltown operates the Marshalltown Municipal Transit, a public transportation service offering fixed-route bus service through four basic routes. MMT also provides demand/response public transportation for disabled and elderly people and paratransit service for those unable to access the fixed-route service. A number of trucking companies provide service in Marshalltown, as does the Union Pacific Railroad Main Line (east-west).
OF IT ALL In addition, the Marshalltown Airport is available for use by corporate and noncommercial aircraft. Commercial air service can be accessed in under one hour at Des Moines International Airport or in just over an hour at the Eastern Iowa Airport in Cedar Rapids. Marshalltown’s position in the state also places it among a number of advanced fiber optics network infrastructures. Its location connects it with three Iowa Communications Network (ICN) video conferencing locations, affording community members the potential to communicate efficiently and cost-effectively with other Iowans. A significant fiber optics capability was added to Marshalltown with Emerson’s establishment of a $12 million data center. This project was part of a larger plan to consolidate the company’s 100 computer centers, which are located around the world, into just four. In addition to Marshalltown, the other data centers will be located in St. Louis, Missouri; Singapore and Western Europe. The Marshalltown data center acts as a backup facility for Emerson’s operations across the globe. The project included renovation and expansion of the existing Fisher Governor Road location.
