A Place with Healthier, Happier, and More Productive Citizens What is a “Blue Zone?” Blue Zones are geographically defined areas where people live measurably longer. Dan Buettner, a National Geographic explorer and world-renowned author of The New York Times bestselling book titled “The Blue Zones—Lessons For Living Longer, from the People Who’ve Lived the Longest,” identified common elements of cultures and healthy living which produced longer life expectancy. This research has been used to develop tools and programs that help people live longer, happier lives with lower rates of chronic disease and higher quality life.

In North Iowa, we are working to optimize our communities by looking at laws, regulations and the physical environment for ways to encourage natural movement and social interaction.

Anyone who has ever made a healthy New Year’s resolution knows the challenges of maintaining it over time. Your circumstances and environment conspire against you, making the goal difficult to achieve. It’s the same challenge faced by traditional health improvement programs that rely on behavior changes alone. The Blue Zones Project is different because it takes an environmental approach to improve well-being. By optimizing our environments—those settings where we spend our time and which influence our behavior—we can make the healthy choice the easy choice so that we naturally adopt healthy behaviors. The Blue Zones Project optimizes four key environments: COMMUNITY SOCIAL NETWORK HABITAT INNER SELF

Our citizens are hard at work adopting the proven strategies to improve the region's showing in the GallupHealthways Well-Being Index (WBI). This measure is the preeminent source for health and well-being data in the United States.

10

Local leaders use the WBI findings to quantify and benchmark the well-being of employees and citizens to make informed decisions regarding health benefits, work environments, corporate culture and community investment.

ndustry and commerce have thrived in North Iowa since the days of the first settlers. The local cement industry began in the early 1900s and that aspect of the regional economy continues to play an important role. Other founding industries such as brick and tile have come and gone, but each left a mark. Today, Fortune 500 companies work hand-in-hand with local, family-owned businesses to provide a wealth of services and diverse employment opportunities. The area’s largest employer is Mercy Medical CenterNorth Iowa. The medical center and its industry partners provide jobs that add $220 million to the local economy. Hospital employees alone spend $96 million on retail sales and contribute $6.1 million in state sales tax revenue. Other leading employers include the public schools, Armour Eckrich Foods, Cargill, Curries Company, Mason City Clinic, The Principal Financial Group Pension Center, Woodharbor Cabinetry and Kraft Foods. Existing companies continue to expand, and many new companies have been attracted to the area

through development efforts. Continuous expansion and investment by several of the region’s most influential employers help the region to thrive and are a tribute to its quality workforce. North Iowa is on the leading edge of renewable fuel creation, hosting ethanol plants, a bio-diesel plant and several wind farms. Here’s an example of how to use this information. Assume that City A has a composite index of 98.3 and City B has a composite index of 128.5. If you live in City A and are contemplating a job offer in City B, you can calculate how much of an increase in your after-tax income is needed to maintain your present lifestyle. In this case, 30.72 percent, or about a 31 percent increase in after-tax salary to maintain the same living standard.

A

t the foundation of any great community is its educational system, and North Iowans take education very seriously. Our schools strive to meet students where they are, and educators have committed to incorporating the Blue Zones Power 9 Principles into the learning environment. In fact, high school students helped to lead the community Blue Zones application effort, and play a key role in the certification process. School menus are prepared with a “plant slant,” and students are taught at a young age to move naturally and to listen to their bodies to prevent unintentional overeating.

Public Schools Test scores prove Iowa’s public schools are doing a tremendous job. The Mason City Community School District and Clear Lake Community Schools take pride in promoting learning for all ages. The Mason City and Clear Lake schools share a superintendent—a testament to the shared community value of promoting efficiency, while keeping a student-centered emphasis. Instructional programs are coordinated PreK to grade 12 with low 13:1 student/teacher ratios to ensure all students experience consistent and coherent programming. All public school teachers are licensed in their assigned teaching areas.

The Stockman House designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and built in 1908 for Dr. George and Eleanor Stockman as their family home, is now a museum. Restored to its 1908 presentation and furnished with period pieces, reproductions of FLW furnishings and original possessions from the Stockman family.

Although not a native North Iowan, famed architect and designer Frank Lloyd Wright made his mark during an early 1900s stay in Mason City. Local attorneys and businessmen James Markley and James Blythe commissioned Wright to design a new hotel and bank building that incorporated their law offices. Markley’s neighbor, Dr. G.C. Stockman, persuaded Wright to design a residence for his family. e The Historic Park Inn Hotel

This development was completed in the early 1900s by colleagues from Wright’s Oak Park Studio who worked on The Park Inn/City National Bank project. The young architects eagerly accepted commissions for projects in the booming community, since Wright, who was notorious for mismanaging his finances, was frequently late in making payroll. The Rock Crest/Rock Glen neighborhood is the largest collection of Prairie School architecture that is unified by a common setting in the world.

The historic public library, made famous in the library scene of The Music Man, was extensively renovated in 2010. North Iowa Band Festival

Music A love for music is deeply entrenched in our region’s heritage. Composer Meredith Willson gave Mason City the nickname of “River City” in his Broadway musical, The Music Man, which he wrote as a valentine to his hometown. North Iowa’s signature celebration is the annual Band Festival, held Memorial Day weekend in Mason City. It serves as a tribute to the community’s rich musical heritage and talented young musicians who carry on this tradition. The Music Man Square

A sculpture of famous composer and musician Meredith Willson greets visitors to The Music Man Square, where the sounds of his music fill the air. At the heart of the square are the Meredith Willson Museum and the Meredith Willson Boyhood Home, which display artifacts from his life.

Rock & Roll Legends

“The Day the Music Died” is remembered each February during the “50s in February” celebration, held at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake. This annual tribute honors the memory of the original Winter Dance Party at the venue where Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and JP “The Big Bopper” Richardson performed their final concerts. The three singers perished in a plane crash just outside of Clear Lake in 1959. The Surf books many high-profile entertainers each year who are eager to play concerts in this historic venue. Vocal Music

Mason City sings! The Mason City High School Vocal Music Department has been recognized by the Grammy Foundation for its outstanding program. Its choirs are routinely invited to perform at national competitions and world class venues such as Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center. Art Charles H. MacNider Art Museum

One of the first stops on any cultural tour should be the Charles H. MacNider Art Museum, home to an impressive permanent collection of American art that includes work by Grant Wood (a common visitor to the region) and Thomas Hart Benton. The museum also hosts an extensive collection of puppets—including the marionettes used in the movie “The Sound of Music”—made and collected by world-renowned puppeteer Bil Baird (a graduate of Mason City High School). Temporary exhibits, films, concerts, art classes, an art library and a sales/rental gallery make the museum the cornerstone of the local arts community. The site is accredited by the American Association of Museums and is wheelchair accessible.

River City Sculptures on Parade

This outdoor sculpture tour winds through Downtown Mason City and leads participants to the Cultural Crescent. Several sculptures feature the beauty of the human body in motion in a nod to the Blue Zones project. The walk encourages Blue Zones participants to Move Naturally and Downshift as they explore the wonderful display of public art. The exhibit is changed annually. Bob White Fused Glass Creations

Artist Bob White developed and perfected the fused glass technique. Fused glass captures and imprisons light and colors inside permitting a detail of design not possible with stained glass. esearchers found that people who live in Blue Zones share nine common lifestyle behaviors that have a direct impact on their increased well-being and longevity. These healthy behaviors, called the Power 9 Principles, center on moving naturally, eating wisely, knowing your life’s purpose and belonging to a social community. The Power 9 Principles are easy, small steps that everyone can take in their daily lives to feel better, live longer and be happier. These simple behaviors are patterned after the lifestyles of people who live in the Blue Zones.

1eMove Naturally We can get more physical activity naturally if we live in walkable communities, de-convenience our homes and grow gardens.

2eKnow Your Purpose People who know why they wake up in the morning live up to seven years longer than those who don’t.

3eDown Shift To reverse inflammation related to every major age-related disease, find time each day to meditate, nap, pray or enjoy a happy hour.

4e80% Rule It takes your stomach 20 minutes to tell your brain it is full, causing most people to accidentally overeat; so stop eating when you feel 80 percent full. “Hara hachi bu is a 2500-year old Confucian mantra, saying it before meals reminds Okinawans to stop eating when their stomach is 80 percent full.

5ePlant Slant Eat a mostly plant-based diet that is heavy on beans, nuts, and green plants. This is consistent with the USDA’s MyPlate recommendations to make fruits, vegetables and grains the majority of your intake.

6eWine at 5 Meet your friends at one of several cozy pubs or lounges. Blue Zones research shows if you have a healthy relationship with alcohol, one or two glasses of wine daily could help add years to your life, especially when consumed with a healthy diet.

7eFamily First Living in a thriving family is worth half a dozen extra years of life expectancy. Invest time in your kids, nurture a monogamous relationship and keep your aging parents nearby.

Frank Lloyd Wright

T

he history of this region, with its winding rivers and rolling prairies, dates back to long before the area was settled by farmers and trappers. The early inhabitants of Cerro Gordo County were the Winnebago and Sioux tribes. The tribes relied upon the lush forests and bountiful lakes for many years before Joseph Hewitt and James Dickirson arrived in 1851. Hewitt and Dickirson settled on the shores of Clear Lake, a spring-fed body of water formed by glaciers that is now seven miles long and 2.5 miles wide. At an elevation of 1,247 feet, the lake is actually higher than many of the buildings in nearby Mason City. The Clear Lake region is believed to have been visited in 1832 by Nathan Boone (son of famed explorer Daniel Boone) although it was not officially settled until 1856.

62

www.masoncityia.com

Meredith Willson

Hewitt and Dickirson’s settlement soon became a Buddy Holly John Dillinger Midwestern oasis. Hewitt traded with the Indians, and Dickirson farmed the rich soil. The town of Shibboleth was settled in 1853 at the convergence of the Winnebago River and Willow Creek by Hewitt, John Long and George Brentner. The town changed names several times—to Masonic Grove, to Masonville and eventually to Mason City—all reflections of the community’s early reliance upon the brick and tile industry. A sawmill set up on the west side of the Winnebago River became the new city’s first commercial business. Settlers soon flocked to the region for its abundant water supply and additional resources.

Nearby, the city of Clear Lake was settled in 1856; in 1859 the railroad brought more economic success to the area. Soon after, Mason City was incorporated. Large deposits of limestone and clay opened the doors for a thriving mining and cement industry, and by 1911 two large cement companies were operating in Mason City. The cement industry continues to be an important part of the community, where brick and tile were also once made. In 1912, the area was one of the largest producers of brick and tile in the world, but the industry has since disappeared. Mason City has now evolved to become a service, retail and distribution center.

Kinney Pioneer Museum Today, the early legacy of the region is preserved at the Kinney Pioneer Museum located near the Mason City Airport. The living history and vintage exhibits transport patrons back to life on the Western frontier. The pioneer village blacksmith shop and log cabin feature frequent demonstrations. The Mason City Municipal Airport was founded in 1927 by the Mason City Chamber of Commerce and the Clausen-Worden Post of the American Legion, hence its airport code “MCW.” Charles Lindbergh attended the Mason City Airport dedication shortly after his historic transatlantic flight. Sadly, more than

30 years later, the airport became known for another historic—and tragic—event. On February 3, 1959, singer and musician Buddy Holly left a performance at the Surf Ballroom’s Winter Dance Party in Clear Lake and boarded a private plane with Ritchie Valens and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson. While departing the Mason City airport in icy weather, the plane crashed in a field near Clear Lake. Today, a memorial in that cornfield is a tribute to these rock ‘n roll legends and “The Day the Music Died.” The boyhood home of composer Meredith Willson, who is best known for his Broadway musicals The Music Man and The Unsinkable Molly Brown, can be found in Mason City. Willson also wrote the familiar Christmas tune “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas.” The Music Man debuted on Broadway on December 19, 1957, and ran for 1,376 performances. Mason City served as the inspiration for the play’s fictional hometown of River City, which was also the setting in the big-screen Hollywood adaptation starring Shirley Jones and Robert Preston. The musical won six Tony Awards, including one for Best Musical, and has since been revived on Broadway and in the movies—a Walt Disney version starred Matthew Broderick and Kristin Chenoweth. The Beatles even performed a cover version of “Till There Was You.”

Each year, locals recall another famous event. On March 13, 1934, notorious bank robber John Dillinger and his accomplice, John Hamilton, each sustained gunshot wounds while attempting to rob the First National Bank in Mason City. They only netted $52,000 from the robbery, far less than the $240,000 they expected. Dillinger had become somewhat of a Robin Hood figure to the public and had planned to use his share of the $240,000 to flee the country.

Here to Serve Our Mission: to promote progressive

community and economic development to benefit the North Iowa region.

W

e are an independent organization operated by a small group of paid staff and hundreds of volunteers. The Mason City Area Chamber of Commerce is not supported by tax dollars and has no power to impose taxes or other measures that would directly increase the cost of living for the citizens of our community. It is simply a private business with a vested interest in activities to grow the local economy and improve the business climate.

WHO is the Chamber? Your friends, neighbors and co-workers. Look around…we’re everywhere. We are the retailers, manufacturers, service providers, entrepreneurs and everyone employed by these enterprises. Collectively, we drive the North Iowa economy.

Your Chamber...By The Numbers • The Chamber’s membership rolls include more than 650 local businesses • Chamber members employ 18,572 people locally

• Chamber members contribute the largest share of $22,040,799 in commercial and industrial property taxes to support local government • Chamber businesses pump hundreds of millions of payroll dollars into our collective pockets, NOT including the multiplier effect of employee local purchases of food, clothing, housing, entertainment, etc. Yes, your Chamber takes a very special interest in promoting commerce to keep our fragile financial ecosystem thriving and viable—which ultimately benefits every member of our community.

Joining the Chamber is a good thing to do, but what exactly does an active chamber membership say about you or your company? Studies show that being active in the local chamber of commerce is a good strategy for businesses to use in communicating to consumers that their company uses good business practices, is involved in the community, cares about customers and is reputable and trustworthy. Members of the Mason City Chamber of Commerce have the option to use the many amenities of the North Iowa Regional Commerce Center.

• Use of meeting rooms is available to members freeof-charge, and the special events room, patio and training room can be reserved for a small charge. • Spacious, climate-controlled storage units are available for off-site records storage and other needs. • Beautiful, well-appointed, “Virtual Offices” are rented by the hour, day, week or month.
