MultiAd recycles all paper and aluminum in the print production area, as well as all fluorescent light bulbs. We also use vegetable oil based inks, low VOC solvents and alcohol free fountain solutions in the press room. Mattoon
he City of Mattoon, Illinois and its surrounding communities provide both residents and visitors of the area a number of resources—recreational opportunities, diverse art and entertainment venues, retail centers and a host of dining and lodging options. Looking Back
M
attoon is filled with a rich history, and its beginnings contributed to the construction of local railroads. In 1853, surveyors from both the Illinois Central Railroad and the Terre Haute & Alton Railroad projected the two rail lines would meet in the area later known as Mattoon. With this forecast, local settlers realized the area was perfect for establishing a community and began marking land for sale with pegs, leading to the village name “Pegtown.” In 1861, the name was changed to “Mattoon” after William B. Mattoon, the chief construction engineer for the Terre Haute & Alton Railroad.
More than 100 buildings were constructed by 1856, including the first schools, churches and stores. The mixture of prime transportation and rich soil in the area aided greatly in the rapid expansion of Mattoon, both residentially and economically. Abraham Lincoln, the United States’ 16th president, and his family have had a role in Mattoon’s comprehensive history since the beginning. Though Abraham Lincoln never resided in the area, his family established residence a mere three miles south of the soon-to-be Mattoon community in 1831. As a circuit-riding lawyer, Lincoln routinely traveled through the county. One of the famous Lincoln-Douglas debates was held on the Coles County Fairgrounds in September of 1858, and it is said that both Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas stayed the night in Mattoon. The 1940s and 1950s brought about the discovery of petroleum reserves in the area surrounding Mattoon, leading to another surge in growth. More recent history includes the founding of Lake Land College in 1966 and the move of the Lender’s Bagels factory to Mattoon in 1986.

attoon is ideally situated in the mid-eastern section of Illinois within Coles County. Its location sits between three major cities— Chicago, St. Louis and Indianapolis—all within a 2.5-hour drive from the community. Mattoon is encircled by a number of transportation systems including major highways, rail lines and airports.
Interstate 57, a major north-south highway that runs through the east and southern tip of Mattoon, allows easy navigation through the city. The interstate offers three exits to Mattoon, including the new Exit 192. Drivers can exit I-57 at Mattoon Exit 190, drive through town and return to the interstate on the south end at Mattoon Exit 184. This strategic and convenient set-up presents an opportunity to visit Mattoon and see what businesses and attractions it has to offer. In addition to I-57, the community’s bloodlines include U.S. Route 45 and State Routes 121 and 16.
A number of airports are located in and near the Mattoon city limits, including Coles County Memorial Airport in the Mattoon, located five minutes east of I-57, along with the University of Illinois-Willard Airport in Savoy and the Decatur Airport. Businesses are supplied with the services of the Canadian National Railway Company, which runs through the Mattoon community, carrying product in and out of the area to a handful of cities across the United States. Surrounded by several transportation systems, Mattoon residents are able to easily access cities all around the country.

Amtrak provides service to and from Mattoon at the Illinois Central Station, located in downtown Mattoon. Local residents have been supporting the renovation and expansion of the station through Project Depot, an organization developed to preserve and renovate the age-stricken station. Between 2,500 and 3,300 commuters each month use the services provided by the rail line in Mattoon, which offers three morning trains, as well as three in the evening. Travelers also have access to the bus services of Greyhound, with a bus stop located at 1904 Broadway Avenue.

Spend the day visiting the various historical sites spread throughout the area, and afterwards, dine at one of the 62 diverse eateries in Mattoon. Neighboring Arthur is home to the heart of Illinois’ Amish Country, bringing in thousands of guests annually. The community is lined with numerous shops, ranging from wood and furniture stores to bakeries and produce stands. Rockome Gardens provides year-round attractions and events, as well as extensive gardens and shops. Mattoon and its surrounding areas are filled with history, dating back to its beginnings in the 1800s. The Lincoln family resided in the area in the 1840s, and though Abraham Lincoln never resided within the county, he visited his family on numerous occasions. The 86-acre Lincoln Log Cabin State Historical Site in nearby Lerna, a mere 15 miles southeast of Mattoon, encompasses a reproduction of the two-room cabin inhabited by Thomas and Sarah Bush Lincoln, Abraham Lincoln’s father and stepmother, and two farmsteads. Also in the area is the Lincoln-Douglas debate museum, in conjunction with historical homes in the vicinity.

After a day of sightseeing, sit down with family at one of the various restaurants throughout Mattoon. Dining venues in the community span several types of cuisine. Casual environments are offered at local sports bars like Stadium Grill Sports Bar and Buffalo Wild Wings, while meeting places including Common Grounds and Cody’s are great for a light lunch or snack. For more fine dining, a combination of food and spirits can be had at the Alamo Steakhouse and Cody’s Roadhouse. Growth in housing within Mattoon continues with the increase in business in the area. In recent years, approximately seven new subdivisions were constructed, offering homebuyers an array of single-family and multi-family homes. Subdivisions located on the outskirts of the city offer residents a peaceful rural setting, while still allowing easy access to the city’s wide array of amenities. Restorations of Mattoon’s older homes persist, adding increased value to each. attoon’s location in Illinois makes it a perfect place for recreational opportunities. Several parks and lakes, orchards, golf courses, bowling, laser tag, roller-skating at the area’s remodeled rink and skateboarding at the city’s new skate park—you name it, Mattoon and its neighboring communities have it.
In December 2010, the Mattoon Area Family YMCA broke ground on a major renovation and expansion project at its facility along 16th Street. The project will expand the current 28,000-square-foot facility to a 63,000-square-foot facility featuring an expanded Wellness Center, two new gymnasiums, an expanded Child Watch Area, upgraded pool systems, updated and expanded women’s and men’s locker rooms and a brand new family locker room. The facility’s new and existing amenities are joined by the Y’s long list of year-round programs for youth and adults. Members take advantage of aquatics programs, group fitness classes, sports leagues and workshops, before- and after-school programs and much more. Created in order to regenerate and maintain the state’s significant native habitats, the more than 65acre site of the Douglas-Hart Nature Center is equipped with a restored tallgrass prairie, a 12-acre wetland, a woodland area with more than 60 native tree species and more than two miles of winding trails and observation stations. Situated on the eastern side of Mattoon, the facility’s Visitor’s Center is open throughout the year and features educational exhibits, displays, programs and guided walks. Residents have access to both Lake Mattoon and Lake Paradise. Lake Mattoon, situated in the southwest corner of Coles County and stretching into both Shelby and Cumberland counties, has a surface area of 1,065 acres and is fed by the Little Wabash River. Not

only does the lake supply water to the city, it is also a site for boating, fishing, camping and relaxation along the public Lake Mattoon Beach. The vast Lake Shelbyville, a Corps of Engineers lake located 32 miles west of Mattoon, is a popular spot for recreation—approximately 1,500 campsites are available around the 11,000-acre lake. Boating access from several ramps span the lake’s borders, hiking trails, fishing spots and much more. Along with several park areas—Lawson, which boasts four new tennis courts, Lytle, home to one of the largest public pools in the state, and Peterson—affording a host of recreational opportunities, the Mattoon area has access to pumpkin patches, apple orchards and strawberry patches.

Baseball continues to be a strong pastime in Mattoon, the “Baseball Capital of the United States,” with more than 10 percent of residents currently participating in over 160 organized baseball, softball and teeball teams. The community is fortunate to have top-rate athletic fields and facilities at Lawson Park and Peterson Park, as well as the Roundhouse Complex, as host to a number of games and tournaments during the season. Three well-manicured golf courses are also available in Mattoon, offering courses for both the beginner and the expert. The Mattoon Golf & Country Club is an 18-hole, private golf course stretching over 6,690 yards from the longest tee for a par of 72. The facility also offers a 15-tee driving range. Meadowview Golf Course, home to the Mattoon High School golf team, is also an 18-hole, public course spanning over 6,900 yards from the longest tee. Golfers can find a challenge here with several water hazards, narrow fairways and large greens. And Rogala Public Links, located just west of Mattoon along Route 16, is a public, nine-hole course measuring 6,138 yards from the men’s tees. Rogala, a top spot for beginners, can be played as an 18-hole course as well, offering a par of 72. Additionally, two driving ranges are situated in the area, while miniature golf is available at Peterson Park. Recreation is plentiful in and around Mattoon and is sure to please every interest.

tudents of Mattoon are served by one main school district—the Mattoon Community Unit School District 2. The school district caters to the educational needs of more than 3,300 students in six schools throughout the Mattoon area. Riddle Elementary School and Williams Elementary School, two newly built grade schools, provide education for grades kindergarten through fifth. Students are afforded one newly remodeled middle school, Mattoon Middle School, and one newly renovated high school, Mattoon High School. The Armstrong Center, a school meeting the special needs of students in the area, is located in Hawthorne Elementary. For those in search of a private education, two parochial schools are available—the newly expanded St. John’s Lutheran School (preK-8th) and St. Mary School (preK-5th). Several higher education facilities are located in and around the Mattoon community, offering two-year and four-year degrees. Lake Land College, located in the southern part of Mattoon, is a public community college that enrolls approximately 8,200 students each year. The college offers a wide selection of twoyear degree, short-term certificate, transfer and technical programs, both on campus and online. In addition, LLC presents various continuing education and community learning programs, along with more than 150 online learning courses.

Ten miles to the east of Mattoon is Eastern Illinois University at Charleston. With an enrollment of over 11,000 students, the university offers a variety of degree programs, intercollegiate sports, organizations and more. Additional colleges and universities within a 50mile driving distance include: Parkland College in Champaign, the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign, Millikin University in Decatur, and Richland Community College in Decatur. One of the main local educational resources in the area is the Mattoon Public Library. After a vast renovation and expansion in 1995, the library now offers residents around 80,000 books, 2,000 videos, 3,000 audio recordings, 244 periodicals, several newspapers and a technology center.

Arts & Entertainment variety of interesting art sites and entertaining theaters and festivals are provided to residents throughout every season. Ten miles to the east is the city of Charleston, home to the Tarble Arts Center, City Art on the Square and Murals Around the Square. Only 13 miles to the west in Sullivan is the Little Theatre on the Square, an entertainment venue offering live theatre. Looking to catch a new movie? The AMC Movie Theater is situated within the city.

Located within Peterson Park is the new Rotary Band Shell. This acoustically designed facility was a local Rotary gift to the City of Mattoon. The historical Time Theater is located in Mattoon. While the theater opened its doors in 1911 as the K Theater, it was brought down by a fire in 1937. After being rebuilt in late-Art Deco style it was renamed the Time Theater and currently serves as a venue for concerts and a variety of special events. Several festivals and events are put on annually in the Mattoon community. A number of duathlons, marathons and triathlons, located at Lake Mattoon, are available for both beginners and advanced athletes. The city is well-known for hosting numerous baseball and softball tournaments, bringing in thousands of visitors to the city. Recognized as the “Baseball Capital of the United States,” the city has been host to the Babe Ruth World Series, as well as the Cal Ripken World Series. Bagelfest, perhaps the most popular festival in Mattoon, has been a significant aspect of the city for more than 25 years. The popular
event began in 1985 as a simple breakfast, introducing Mattoon residents to the new production of bagels at the then Kraft Foods plant. Upon the success of the breakfast, more and more activities and attractions were added to the festival each year. Held during the latter part of July, and attracting tens of thousands of people from all over the world, guests enjoy contests, carnival rides, food and craft vendors and live entertainment. Don’t forget to check out the Bagelfest Parade, Bagel Bow Wow, Run for the Bagel race and the Free Bagel Breakfast, as well! Here’s a fun fact—the Lender’s Bagels factory located in the community created the “Berry Biggest Blueberry Bagel” on July 23, 1998. The bagel weighed in at 714 pounds and stood at 13.75 inches high and 59 inches in diameter, with a 15-inch diameter hole. Lender’s Bagels continues to hold the record for the Biggest Blueberry Bagel in the “Guinness Book of World Records”. In the winter season, get ready for the holidays with the Mattoon Lightworks Festival, a static and animated light display, which runs from Thanksgiving through the Christmas holiday. Attracting nearly 15,000 cars annually, and approximately 379 cars per day, the beautiful scene within Mattoon’s Peterson Park is complete with over 200 light displays featuring snowball fights, reindeer and Santa Claus. On top of that, the community is home to the Silver Star Roller Skate Rink, comprised of thousands of feet of skate space and modern sound and light systems, and Mattoon Bowl.

hopping in Mattoon offers a range of clothing, jewelry and specialty items. Along with these shops, one can find a number of diverse restaurants and entertainment venues. Cross County Mall, two strip malls, shopping centers and freestanding retailers line the streets of the community.
Cross County Mall, positioned on the east side of Mattoon at 700 Broadway East, is equipped with more than 30 stores, anchored by JCPenney, Sears and Carsons. The 300,000square-foot mall is host to numerous family-fun activities and events all year, including the Mattoon Chamber of Commerce Business Expo, arts and crafts shows, a lawn and garden show, the annual farm show, collectibles weekend, the annual new car show and the Cub Scouts’ Pinewood Derby event. Cross County Mall recently unveiled major renovations to its interior and exterior façade – greatly enhancing the shopping experience for its patrons. New features include updated landscaping, murals, new flooring and a central fountain. The newest addition to the retail community is the Mattoon Marketplace at Route 16 and I-57. This modern development brings many new retail and restaurant outlets to the city, including Buffalo Wild Wings, CATO, Snap Fitness, PetSmart and others. Adjacent to the Mattoon Marketplace are major retailers Wal-Mart, Home Depot and Staples. Shoppers in Mattoon also enjoy visiting the Good Neighbor Shopping Center on the south side of the community, the Daisy Lane Scrapbooking and Craft Mall at 2619 Lake Blvd., as well as a variety of freestanding stores, like Aarons, and a mix of antique and specialty shops.

Development
he business environment in the City of Mattoon has been a strong driving force ever since the founding of the community. It serves as the original home base for major companies like Rural King, Consolidated Communications and 1st Mid-Illinois Bank & Trust, and continues to attract new businesses, both large and small, who are attracted to the area for a number of reasons: easy access to larger cities, the affordability of land in the region and the strong skills and work ethic of the employee base – to name a few.

The area is also on the grow, with many new developments and renovation projects happening in town. Among the most recent developments include new downtown renovations, the addition of PetSmart at Marketplace Center, upgrades to the Morgan Phipps Bridge at S. Route 45 and Charleston Ave. and structure expansions at the YMCA and businesses including United Graphics Printing and Howell Paving. In addition, a concrete facility was recently built across from Howell Paving and new developments can be seen on the east side of town and along I-57. The area’s location directly off of Interstate 57, which provides links to several farther major interstates, affords easy transport for businesses. Its position in the heart of the

Midwest transportation network puts it within proximity to half of the country’s population, in addition to 65 percent of the U.S.’s manufacturing region. According to Coles Together, the economic development organization for Coles County, a survey of local manufacturers has shown that the “labor force here demonstrates high product quality, high productivity, high reliability and low absenteeism,” with the county’s labor productivity numbers continuously ranking higher than the national average. The significant presence of Lake Land College in Mattoon has contributed greatly to the growth and success of a variety of business in the area. The Lake Land College Center for Business and Industry (CBI) provides employee training and development services to its regional employers, customized training and additional business support programs and services, along with a number of traditional technical and pre-baccalaureate courses and more than 140 online courses. The Mattoon Chamber of Commerce has worked diligently to support local business since its inception in October of 1905. The Chamber aids in the growth of businesses in the region, brings in new business and stands for local businesses in government affairs. Around 400 businesses in Mattoon enjoy the vast benefits of joining the Chamber of Commerce.

griculture and industry play large roles in Mattoon’s strong local economy, with such companies as Anamet Electrical, Inc., General Electric, Justrite Manufacturing Co., Mattoon Precision Manufacturing, R.R. Donnelley & Sons, Mars Petcare US and Lender’s Bagels located within the city’s boundaries. In addition to these top industrial companies, the community houses three grain elevators in town. Mattoon’s positive business environment has consistently attracted new and innovative companies to the area, raising the quality of life in the community.

The Mattoon Enterprise Park is a 230-acre site zoned for industrial use. The park’s lots range between two acres and 15 acres, with prices going for $8,000-$15,000 per acre. The Enterprise Park is positioned along U.S. 45, one mile from the new I-57 interchange.
Mattoon is comprised of over 18,000 acres of farmland, housing nearly 300 farms. For support, the farmers join the Coles County Farm Bureau, a part of the Illinois Farm Bureau. Ninety-six counties in Illinois participate in the Bureau, which represents two out of every three farmers in the state. The organization’s mission is “to improve the economic well-being of agriculture and enrich the quality of farm family life.” The Coles County Farm Bureau aids farmers by providing updated information on modern technology, informing farmers of aspects impacting agriculture in the area, representing farmers in local, state and national government and offering marketing and educational services to enhance members’ net farm income.
Ag business is a leading force in Mattoon. The Farmers Grain Co. of Dorans specializes in the purchase and selling of corn, beans and wheat, while U.S. Soy LLC has used Mattoon’s abundant land supply for storage facilities, a processing plant and offices. The company chose Mattoon as their location due to the area being recognized as
Lake Land College also presents great support for the agricultural industry in Mattoon. The college’s Ag Department prepares students to enter the workforce by offering training in various areas of ag business. SBL continues to invest in facility upgrades in order to meet the growing demands for advanced healthcare in the area. In August 2010, the Prairie Pavilion I medical office building (complete with a walk-in occupational health clinic) opened; Prairie Pavilion II, home to various SBL clinics, opened in June 2011. SBL also unveiled its latest construction project in summer 2011. This three-year, $48 million initiative includes renovated and expanded Emergency Room space, surgical suites and laboratory, and will result in all-private patient rooms. Carle Foundation Physicians - Mattoon/Charleston offers a wide range of healthcare services to meet the needs of the community. The clinic is equipped with a complete nursing and patient care staff and visiting specialists who provide high quality care in a comfortable environment. Medical services include adult medicine, convenient care, women’s health, pediatrics, psychiatry/psychology, family practice and diabetes/nutritional services. The Carle Physician Group also offers expanded medical specialty services (provided by visiting specialists) in the areas of cardiology, neurology, oncology, endocrinology, urology and many others. he City of Mattoon is dedicated to providing residents with a safe and prosperous place to live. The City Council meets every first and third Tuesday of the month at City Hall at 6:30 p.m. The Mattoon Police Department patrols the 9.8 square miles of Mattoon’s corporate city limits. The Mattoon Fire Department responds to calls from two stations.

Furthermore, Mattoon has been an active part in the United States’ military service since the 1830s. Completed in 1956, the current Army National Guard Armory has been the site of a handful of Infantry Units and Combat Service Support Units.

Family Festival
ach September, more than 800 Special Olympian Athletes from the area gather on the grounds of Lake Land College for the annual Special Olympics Family Festival (SOFF), organized by employees of Consolidated Communications. SOFF is a oneof-a-kind day of fun and non-competitive games for athletes from Area 9 Special Olympics. At SOFF, each athlete is paired with a Friend-For-A-Day who escorts the athlete around the tent city of activities.

The event has grown from its beginnings in 1984 with just a few hundred athletes and volunteers to the largest event of its kind in the U.S. More than 1,500 volunteers sign up each year from area colleges and universities, local businesses and community organizations to help make this day a success.
