Hello Friends, My name is Michelle Thacker and I am the 2012 Chamber President. I have been serving on the Chamber Board since 2007. Eastern Oregon has been my home for over 36 years. Our valley is enriched with nearby mountains, rivers, lakes and riding trails. We have a variety of schooling options for our children including public and private educations. We take pride in our younger generation by attending many events including sporting games, rodeos, livestock shows and musical performances. For those who love to volunteer, there are over a dozen clubs and organizations always looking for new members. Our community thrives on volunteerism; we have community spirit! Our local businesses, including the Chamber of Commerce, have economic challenges ahead of us. Daily, our businesses evaluate practices to see what they can do to make their businesses more successful and thrive in this ever-changing environment. Recently, the Chamber adopted the process of using an online newsletter distributed monthly. This has been a cost saving measure, but it also delivers the upcoming month’s news in a more timely fashion, besides being environmentally friendly. In our newsletter you will find upcoming events, strategic business classes, ribbon cuttings and local announcements. We have also started advertising using multimedia sources such as Facebook and increased our radio ad campaigns to keep our members informed of local business events. The Chamber is an advertising tool for its members. As neighbors, we need to support each other’s businesses to remain successful. When shopping for your next purchase and comparing price, quality and customer service, please take one more factor into consideration. How is this business giving back to our community? I am confident you will find our local businesses support our community with their nominal donations and many hours of volunteer work. Let’s keep our valley our home and shop locally from our neighborly merchants who give back to our community, all year long. Respectfully, Michelle Thacker President, Milton-Freewater Area Chamber of Commerce 4

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Frazier Farmstead Museum is a wonderful display of the area’s rich history. The site, which sits upon six acres, was settled by W.S. Frazier, the community’s founder, and was continuously occupied by the Frazier family for 115 years. The actual home was constructed in 1892 and today houses a grand collection of antique furnishings, many of which are original items in the home, and other items reminiscent of the 19th century. In addition to the home, the farmstead houses a 1918 barn, a carriage house and a number of other structures that all played a role in the working farm. The museum is open April through December, Thursday through Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and is available for special group tours and rentals.

Tim is the founder of Tim’s Cascade Style Potato Chips, now retired and making wine with his wife Lori, family and friends. The Don Carlo name is a tribute to Lori’s grandfather who immigrated to the U.S. from Calabria, Italy and was known as a great hobby winemaker, producing awardwinning wines among his friends and family. Ashley moved the winery and production facility to join forces with Tero Estates in 2010. A tasting of Flying Trout Wines is available during wine tours of the Tero Estates facility or in the Marcus Whitman tasting room. Two wine makers; two labels, one winery. Cheers! The town of Milton originated in 1872, after W.S. Frazier established land for a town site. M.V. Wormington constructed the first residence in the area in 1873 and, by consensus, the fledgling community was named Milton. By 1882, the settlement encompassed a population of 400 with several businesses and mills, along with a schoolhouse, railroad station, two churches, a post office and an express office. Milton was incorporated as a city soon after in 1886.

attract new residents – “Free Water For all Home Sites.” The new town, which was also known for its saloons, was incorporated as a city in 1902.

Freewater was established in 1889 by a group of men discontent with the path Milton was on, one reason being the prohibition of sales of alcoholic beverages. Initially named “New Walla Walla,” the name “Freewater” resulted from an advertising slogan used to 14

While Milton and Freewater remained separate cities for several decades, the two communities began to grow closer, paving the way for many residents to advocate for a merging. The Consolidation Club was formed after World War II, with J.T. Monahan elected chairman. Not everyone accepted the new idea, which created a challenge as state law mandates a majority vote to pass the edict. An election in 1950 led to a favorable move for consolidation, and thus the new city of Milton-Freewater was founded. The rest is history!

With abundant recreation, active cultural activities, advanced education and medical resources, plus a stable business environment, it is no wonder so many have chosen MiltonFreewater as their home. The rural lifestyle of the area reflected in the city is well complemented by first-rate amenities, making Milton-Freewater an enviable place to reside. The housing selection in Milton-Freewater is varied. New construction blends wonderfully with the community’s mature neighborhoods, guaranteeing that homebuyers will find something to suit every style and price tag. Prices for beautiful, modern estates with acreage can average $350,000 and up, while prices for modest homes in friendly subdivisions range in the mid to low $100,000s. For those who prefer to rent, there are a variety of options available in and near Milton-Freewater. The area’s senior population also has plenty of choices when it comes to independent and assisted living options. MF Oregon Retirement, Heritage Cottage (a women only facility),

Heritage Manor, Heritage Villa and Wheatland Village (located in Walla Walla) are exceptional choices for senior housing. The Milton-Freewater area is recognized by agriculturalists as an exceptional place to raise crops of virtually any kind. Its location in the “banana belt of the Walla Walla Valley with its moderate climate, long growing season, temperate winters and easy accessibility to ample water and rich soil make it ideal for the production of outstanding fruit and vegetables in a shorter time period than in some other areas of Oregon and Washington. Apples, cherries, peaches, nectarines, prunes, plums, grapes, wheat, peas, peonies, alfalfa, corn and asparagus are grown in abundance. The fruit crops raised in the area generate more than $85 million in revenue every year, while the wine grape industry has increased its earnings and prominence to a $100 million industry for Umatilla County. At present, apples are the chief crop by volume in the region, but wine grapes may quickly become the leader in coming years. Approximately 60 percent of the wine grapes processed in the Walla Walla Valley are produced in Oregon, a number certain to increase with recent vineyard expansions. Umatilla County is also known as the largest wheat producing area in the state of Oregon.

The concept of the Chamber of Commerce as a voluntary organization in the U.S. is eight years older than the Declaration of Independence. The New York State Chamber of Commerce, the first in America, was organized in 1768 and five years later the first local Chamber of Commerce was organized in Charleston, South Carolina. The Milton-Freewater Area Chamber of Commerce was organized in 1945 with Sidney Reese as its first President. The Milton-Freewater Area Chamber of Commerce is a voluntary organization dedicated to an agenda aimed at meeting what our members feel necessary to prosper. Our goal is to give our members value for their membership investment by offering extended educational classes and seminars, networking opportunities and maximum exposure through media publications, with our website and Facebook page. Each year the Board of Directors identify specific goals in order to focus on what will really make a difference in the quality of life in our community. The program of work will be a strategic plan of action to guide the Board, staff and member volunteers in accomplishing the mission of the Chamber. Partnering with other area agencies gives the Chamber a broad base of support to offer programs designed to educate, inform and enhance skills essential to the success of any business. The Milton-Freewater Area Chamber of Commerce believes that when men and women come together unselfishly on problems in which they have in common, progress will result. 28

Milton-Freewater Area Chamber of Commerce

Located in northeastern Oregon (just 8 miles south of Walla Walla, Washington), Milton-Freewater is a community surrounded by orchards, wheat fields and vineyards set against the beautiful Blue Mountains (yes, they really are blue!). Long before the two towns of Milton and Freewater merged in 1950, settlers flocked to this area to take advantage of the fertile soil. Now situated within the acclaimed Walla Walla Valley Wine Appellation, the area is still well known for its agricultural bounty. Lots of sun in the summer and mild winters contribute to an almost perfect climate. For more information visit us at
