Is history your passion? Then Mount Pleasant is your place. A steady flow of legendary speakers in the mid-19th century, including Frederick Douglass and Sojourner Truth, helped earn the community the nickname “The Athens of Iowa.” A century and a half later, a visitor to the campus of Iowa Wesleyan College

will stroll past a statue of Arabella Babb Mansfield, the first woman lawyer in the nation admitted to the Bar, and a uniform that once belonged to Dr. Peggy Whitson, the first woman to command the international space station. Both graduated from the college, as did Dr. Thomas Poulter, chief scientist on two of Admiral Richard Byrd’s Antarctic expeditions, and Dr. James Van Allen, principal investigator for the Explorer I and III satellite missions. More recently, Mount Pleasant launched Tom Vilsack, once the city’s mayor, who went on to terms as Governor of Iowa and Secretary of Agriculture under President Barack Obama.

While science, law and governance are admirable pursuits, Mount Pleasant also is justifiably proud of its agricultural heritage. This is most evident over the long Labor Day weekend, when thousands of visitors from across the country and around the globe pour into the Midwest Old Threshers Reunion. From the chug of countless antique tractors to the sight of a coal black steam locomotive pulling passenger cars loaded with laughing children, Old Threshers will warm the hearts of anyone nostalgic for a simpler time. And yet, even with our reverence for the past, Mount Pleasant remains focused on

the future. Several large employers and hundreds of commercial and specialty enterprises keep the community humming with economic activity. History Without the trailblazing spirit and hard work of early forward-thinking leaders, Mount Pleasant would not be the exceptionally dynamic, thriving community that stands today. The Henry County area opened its doors for settlement on June 1, 1833, with the development of Mount Pleasant following close behind in 1835. The town was the site of the area’s premier hard-surface road. Constructed of wooden planks linking Mount Pleasant to Burlington, the roadway was ultimately replaced by tracks for the Burlington and Missouri River Railroads in 1856. Established educational institutions proved to play a significant role in the history of Mount Pleasant. In fact, the community was at one point dubbed the “Athens of Iowa” due to its strong focus on education. Supplementing the public school system, three four-year colleges were in operation in Henry County – Whittier College in Salem, Iowa Wesleyan University (now Iowa Wesleyan College) and German College in Mount Pleasant. Home-based within Mount Pleasant, Iowa Wesleyan University opened in 1842 and is today hailed as Iowa’s oldest co-educational, degree-granting institution. It was here that seven Iowa Wesleyan co-eds formed a new philanthropic education organization known as the International PEO Sisterhood in 1869. The initial Women’s Rights Convention in Iowa was held in the community in 1870, and in 1943, Iowa Wesleyan College organized the state’s first women’s intercollegiate basketball team.

During the area’s early years, the agricultural industry reigned supreme. While the community retained strong ties to its agricultural roots, past residents understood the importance of expanding the county’s employment base beyond the farm. With the end of World War II, Mount Pleasant began to recruit new industry to the area. The effort attracted several new business ventures, with many of these original companies still calling Mount Pleasant home to this day. These long-time community partners include such nationally known companies as Walmart Distribution, Veyance Technologies, Pioneer Hi-Bred and Hearth & Home Technologies, a division of HON Corporation.

Transportation The slogan of Mount Pleasant radio station KILJ says it best: “Broadcasting from the CROSSROADS OF THE WORLD!” With two new four-lane highways, U.S. Highway 34 and U.S. Highway 218/27, intersecting in Mount Pleasant, the community is less than a day’s drive from the Midwest’s largest markets – Chicago, Saint Louis, Minneapolis/Saint Paul, Indianapolis, Omaha, Kansas City and Des Moines. In fact, the latter highway’s nickname, The Avenue of the Saints, was coined by a Mount Pleasant entrepreneur and community leader who recognized the logistical advantages of a highway linking Saint Louis, MO, to Saint Paul, MN.

Henry County is easily accessed by both passenger and rail freight. An Amtrak train passes through Mount Pleasant’s historic station twice daily on its way between Chicago and San Francisco. Meanwhile, the Burlington Northern Santa Fe and Norfolk Southern railways help local manufacturers keep both inbound and outbound freight costs low. They are assisted in this effort by local shortline operator Burlington Junction Railway, which provides a variety of shipping and transload services. Of course, rail is not the only way to deliver goods. More than 70 local and national motor freight carriers serve Henry County, offering full truck, less-than-truckload (LTL) and small-package shipping.

And if you hear the buzz of an airplane engine, chances are it took off from the 4,001-foot-long, hard-surface runway at Mount Pleasant Municipal Airport. The runway accommodates up to medium-sized aircraft. A grass runway is also available. Aviators can take advantage of year-round access, fuel services, hangar facilities and maintenance services, along with executive charter offerings and professional flight instruction. Larger aircraft are supported at the Burlington Regional/Southeast Iowa Regional Airport. Just 20 miles east of Mount Pleasant, the airport offers commercial airline service through Air Choice One, which provides daily flights to Lambert-St. Louis International Airport and O’Hare International Airport in Chicago.

Tucked among the rolling hills, natural woodlands and flowing rivers of southeast Iowa, Mount Pleasant preserves and celebrates its rich past through a multitude of unique historical sites and attractions. From major communitywide events to interesting museums, residents and visitors alike get to experience the area’s cherished heritage and natural resources, while simultaneously commemorating the community’s bright prospects.

Antique car lovers will enjoy the Red Flag Horseless Carriage Tour the last weekend in September. Vintage vehicles and their drivers flock to Mount Pleasant for this four-day event showcasing vintage vehicles and vintage vehicle touring as they celebrate the beginning of modern transportation.

Distinctive museums, teeming with historically significant items and information, paint a clear picture of Mount Pleasant’s past. The Midwest Old Threshers Heritage Museum is a great place to experience the agricultural legacy of the

area. On display are steam engines – including the largest Case 110 horsepower – a working threshing machine, antique tractors and farm implements, with a number of prominent exhibits highlighting a variety of agricultural-related topics. If it’s the stage you are passionate about, make sure to stop in the Theatre Museum of Repertoire Americana, an historical tribute to the area’s theatrical heritage that was made possible through the dedication of the Midwest Old Settlers and Threshers Association. The museum is teeming with a collection of unique memorabilia and photographs from early American entertainment. Stage curtains, playbills, costumes and more from famous touring theatre troupes of the 1850s are presented.

Mount Pleasant’s most highly anticipated and largest event is the Midwest Old Threshers Reunion, which draws in around 50,000 people over five days each year. An assortment of exhibits, educational programming and demonstrations depict Midwestern rural heritage at this popular event, held the final week in August – with the last day falling on Labor Day. Through

the event’s highlighted displays and activities, visitors can examine operating steam engines and antique tractors, cars and trucks, while enjoying great food, shopping and musical entertainment.

Nearby Salem is home to the Lewelling Quaker Museum, which was once known as the main ticket office for the historic Underground Railroad. The structure was built to hide escaping slaves with the use of special closets, trapdoors and cubbyholes. Today, the museum contains household artifacts typical of the 1840s – reminders of the anti-slavery movement. Nearby historic sites and museums not to miss include the Dover Museum, the Swedish American Museum in Swedesburg, the Wayland Museum and the Winfield Museum. Special events for the whole family can be found throughout the year in Mount Pleasant. The Midwest Central Railroad provides great events throughout the year, including an October “Ghost Train of No Return and the Ghostly Trolley” for all ages and a holiday “North Pole Express” train ride for children. Summer music events and Main Street Mount Pleasant’s Annual Chili Challenge and the Red Flag Horseless Carriage Tour in the fall add to the great entertainment found here. Visitors taking advantage of these attractions and events can choose from a selection of accommodations in the Mount Pleasant area. The area’s hotels and motels

offer a range of amenities and top-notch hospitality. Choice lodging options to choose from include the Best Western, Comfort Inn and Suites, Rodeway Inn and Super 8 Motel. For those who enjoy sleeping under the stars the list includes such sites as the Crossroads RV Park and modern cabins at Oakland Mills Park.

Old and new, traditional and contemporary, ornate and refined. Mount Pleasant’s residential neighborhoods offer the best of both past and present. Restored Victorian-era homes define the Main Street aesthetic, many of them situated on wellmanicured lawns and shaded by towering oaks and maples. A number of these residences are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and visitors come from across the state and beyond to view, photograph and, on occasion, paint their beauty.

Recreation The Mount Pleasant Park and Recreation Department oversees 10 city parks, which offer everything from athletic fields, playground equipment and tennis courts to picnic areas, a swimming pool and open spaces. The largest is East Lake Park, which spans 120 acres and is equipped with a three-field softball and a five-field soccer complex, two playground sites, three sand volleyball courts, four lighted tennis courts, nine horseshoe pits, a driving range (open from April through November), a 6.5-acre pond and picnic areas. Forty-acre McMillan Park is home to some of the area’s largest events, including the Midwest Old Threshers Reunion and the Henry County Fair, while Saunders Park encompasses the Mount Pleasant Family Aquatic Center, composed of a six-lane, 25yard heated pool, two diving boards, two water slides, a sundeck and spacious lounging area. The 60-acre park also has playground equipment, two shelters, two gazebos and a log cabin. Oakland Mills Park and Nature Center is located 4.5 miles south of Mount Pleasant, on the banks of the Skunk River and is one of Iowa’s oldest state parks. The 104-acre area boasts camping, cabins, trails, fishing and guided canoe trips. The Oakland Mills Nature Center features live animal displays and provide a closeup view of nature’s treasures.

Other parks in the city include the 1.5-acre Schaeffer Park; Cranes Pond, which stretches over five acres and encompasses a two-acre pond for fishing; the two-acre Central Park located in the heart of the downtown business district; and Green Square Park, a smaller neighborhood site. Mount Pleasant is also served by The REC Center, which is managed by Iowa Wesleyan College. The 30,000square-foot multi-purpose facility was built in 1995 and houses a full-size gymnasium, two racquetball courts, lap pool, whirlpool, indoor track, weight room and cardio equipment. In addition to these amenities are a full array of programs, summer camps and special events for people of all ages. A day on the greens can be had at the Mount Pleasant Golf and Country Club. The nine-hole course spans 2,833 yards for a par of 36. Other nearby courses include the Deerwood Golf and Country Club in New London and the Twin Lakes Recreation Center in Winfield. Several miles of recreational trails wind throughout Mount Pleasant, designed for walking, biking and jogging enthusiasts alike. The scenic Skunk River lies just outside of Mount Pleasant at Oakland Mills and features a notable water trail. Additionally, the Mississippi River, Lake Rathbun, Lake Geode and a handful of state parks are located within reach of the community.

Music lovers will take pleasure in the beautiful sounds of the Southeast Iowa Symphony Orchestra, a regional orchestral company based at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant. SEISO offers a subscription series and performs an annual slate of events, including school tours, pop concerts and summer concerts. Youth competitions and string festivals are also part of SEISO’s quality programming.

The Mount Pleasant Public Library satisfies literary needs through a collection of more than 52,000 materials, including print, large print, DVDs, recorded books, music CDs and more. Housed in the newly renovated Library and Community Center, the library offers 19,000 square feet of learning space, complete with state-of-theart technology, work rooms, free public-use computers and wireless Internet access, and children’s and genealogy research areas. Summer reading programs for children, a story hour for preschoolers, book talks for youth and adults and a range of further programming are all supplied through the library.

Education

Lifelong learning is a tradition in Mount Pleasant and Henry County. From excellent early-childhood programs to our four-year liberal arts college, our county truly makes first-class education available to residents.

Encouraging the love of learning at a young age is important here. Multiple preschools provide a safe, supportive and loving environment where children can take their first steps down the path toward full-time students.

The majority of area students are enrolled at Mount Pleasant Community School District. The district enrolls approximately 2,150 students in its seven facilities, making it one of Iowa’s largest public school systems (42 of 364). The Mount Pleasant Community School District is composed of four elementary schools (K5), one middle school (6-8), one high school (9-12) and one alternative high school (10-12). Students are prepared for the future with a challenging curriculum that stresses

technology, as well as the fundamentals of math, reading and science. Regular and enriched academics are complemented by advanced placement courses, special education, talented and gifted programming, vocational education, including Project Lead The Way, individualized classes and an array of extracurricular activities.

Students in the district continually score above the state and national average on both the Iowa Test of Basic Skills and the Iowa Test of Educational Development. A strength of the district is the fact that 85 percent of all fourth grade students score at or above the proficiency level in literacy and math. Mount Pleasant Community High School students regularly excel, typically scoring above national and state averages on college testing exams. In fact, students average an impressive 22.6 on the ACT test. More than 80 percent of graduating students look to continue the learning path to higher education or further training opportunities in postsecondary education.

Three other school districts are located in Henry County. WACO (short for Wayland, Ainsworth, Crawfordsville and Olds) serves students in the northwest part of the county. Winfield-Mount Union covers the northeast, and New London, the second largest district in the county, is east of Mount Pleasant. All three districts offer exceptional academic programs and great sports and extracurricular opportunities. Another exceptional option for schooling is the Mount Pleasant Christian School, a nondenominational, nonprofit educational entity. In addition to offering preschool education for three and four-year-olds, Mount Pleasant Christian School provides a full curriculum of regular academic courses for students in Kindergarten through 12th grade. Students need not leave home when high school is complete; Mount Pleasant is home to two renowned institutions of higher learning. Iowa Wesleyan College is a small, private, liberal arts institution affiliated with the United Methodist Church. Approximately 850 full- and part-

time students are enrolled through day, evening and online courses. Iowa Wesleyan empowers students to discover their potential through individualized learning experiences, service and professional opportunities. A unique combination of small classes, leadership opportunities and active student organizations combine with service projects and internships to prepare Iowa Wesleyan graduates to be successfully engaged in their professions and communities. Academic disciplines focus on students’ personal and professional growth, offering more than 40 majors and programs. Cultural and athletic events on campus are open to the community.

Banquet, conference and event facilities are also available. Southeastern Community College’s Mount Pleasant campus offers an affordable means of starting the college process or building and enhancing career skills. Students may choose from more than 35 fields of study, ranging from agriculture and accounting to respiratory care and welding. Day and evening classes fit into even the busiest schedules. And SCC is well known for its successful sports programs; particularly the high-flying SCC Blackhawks men’s basketball team, winner of junior college national championships in 2000, 2003 and 2004.

Henry County Health Center, a 74-bed facility in Mount Pleasant dedicated to the overall well being of the community and surrounding area, has been recognized frequently at the state and national level for the quality of its care and facilities. Recent accolades include HCHC’s acknowledgement as being one of the top 100 hospitals in the U.S., as well as one of the top 20 rural hospitals with fewer than 250 beds by Modern Healthcare. The hospital also received the “EMT-Paramedic Emergency Medical Service of the Year” award by the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT), and has been commended multiple times as one of the nation’s “Most Wired Hospitals.” HCHC provides healthcare ranging from cardiopulmonary, rehabilitation and inpatient services to emergency, imaging, laboratory and surgery services. As the population ages, senior care has also become a priority in Henry County. Several assisted-living options help fill the need. One facility, Park Place, is on the Henry

County Health Center campus. Mount Pleasant is fortunate to have hardworking, progressive leaders in place at City Hall. The City utilizes the Mayor/Council form of government, with a mayor, city administrator and a council of six. The City offers a long list of first-rate services for local residents and businesses that create an unequaled environment in which to live and work.

The cornerstones of faith and values were laid early in Mount Pleasant’s rich history. The Methodist Episcopal Church was the first religious society formed in Mount Pleasant and Henry County. In the latter part of 1835, the Missouri Conference of the M.E. Church sent young Rev. John Ruble “to occupy and cultivate” the new field of Mount Pleasant. He preached his first sermon in the cabin of Presley Saunders, the first home built in Mount Pleasant.

From this simple beginning Mount Pleasant is now home to more than 15 houses of worship. Many local faith-based institutions offer holiday services, religious education and community outreach programming to meet the needs of the community. The Henry County Ministerial Association also spearheads a wealth of ecumenical initiatives and programs throughout the Mount Pleasant area.
