dvancing and promoting local business in the area’s community has been the dedication of the Nazareth Area Chamber of Commerce. For over 77 years the chamber has been prosperous for local residents.

here is a notable sense of pride in homes, properties and business establishments throughout the seven municipalities; they exude the benefits of rural serenity and small-town warmth in a close proximity to an urban setting.

Residents of the Nazareth/Bath Area are known for their hard work, dedication to providing for their families and ensuring high quality of life.

New homebuyers are quick to put the Nazareth/Bath area high on their list of most desirable locations because of this high quality of life. Volunteers play an important role in keeping the Nazareth/Bath Area attractive. I

n 1740, the well-known evangelist George Whitefield hired the Moravians to build a school for orphans on his land, which today is known as the Whitefield House. Later Whitefield sold the land to the Moravians, who then established the Moravian community of Nazareth.

The Moravians made Nazareth into a thriving village, surrounded by farms, orchards, and plantations. Various public, religious and residential buildings were constructed, creating the highly regarded historic borough that we enjoy today.

In the mid-nineteenth century, Nazareth opened to nonMoravians, who came to work for the textile, agriculture, machine, cement and other growing industries. These new settlers brought their own traditions, faiths and cultures with them providing the distinctive town with the rich variety of ethnic heritages it celebrates today.

he Nazareth Area is located near the eastern border of Pennsylvania in Northampton County. The area is immediately north and northeast of the cities of Bethlehem and Easton and close to large market centers. Interstate roadways, bus and rail systems and a major airport provide a comprehensive transportation system for businesses and residents. Countless businesses are located in the Nazareth Area and throughout the Lehigh Valley. Municipalities in the Nazareth area include Bath Borough, Bushkill Township, Lower Nazareth Township, Nazareth Borough, Stockertown Borough, Tatamy Borough and Upper Nazareth Township.

The Nazareth/Bath Area and Lehigh Valley area in particular have become transportation hubs for the eastern corridor of the U.S. With the convenience of interstate highways and local expressways, travel to major urban areas is within a two-hour drive of the Nazareth Area. Its proximity to these major areas — Scranton/Wilkes-Barre is 60 miles north, New York is 70 miles east, Philadelphia is 65 miles south, Harrisburg is 90 miles west — is a big benefit to both visitors and residents.

The Lehigh Valley International Airport is 15 minutes from the Nazareth/Bath Area. The facility provides connections to every major city in the world. The airlines maintain regular daily schedules and also provide commuter flights to New York, Philadelphia and Washington. Private airports in the area offer flying instruction, air charters, aircraft storage facilities and aircraft rental and leasing.

Rail transportation is available for industrial and commercial needs. Truck freight distribution centers are located in the Nazareth/Bath Area and throughout the Lehigh Valley.

Public bus service is available. Daily bus service is provided to Easton and Bethlehem, as well as New York City, for commuters and tourists. Travel agencies are reliable and experienced, and a variety of tour excursions are scheduled by the agencies and/or the charter bus companies throughout the year.

Routes 191 and 248 connect in Nazareth. Easy access from the Nazareth and Bath areas to Routes 22, 33 and I-78 gives residents and businesses an interconnected and coordinated highway system. Route 512 traverses Bath Borough and connects with Routes 22 and 33. With the completion of the Route 33 Extension, a direct link exists between I-78 and 80.

ew areas in Northampton County boast such a splendid blend of rich culture, history and recreation against a landscape of rolling hills and winding rivers,” according to Discover Lehigh Valley The Nazareth/Bath area abounds these opportunities in: musical performances, historic sites, museums, recreational facilities, theater and special events.

Market Square Day ushers in the fall months setting up on the “Commons” at Nazareth’s Moravian Hall Square. The Celtic Highland Games and Festival takes place annually in historic Bethlehem. Bath Borough has Family and Friendship Days in September and later in the month “Living History” is staged with soldiers’ campsites and open houses at the Jacobsburg Environmental Center located north of Nazareth.

When the weather turns cold during the winter months, the focus turns to historic events. Nazareth is known for its annual “Walking Candlelight Tour,” while the YMCA has “Tree of Lights,” and the “Nazareth Towne Open House.” The traditional 10-mile walk from Nazareth to Bethlehem, “Christmas Peace Pilgrimage,” is scheduled in mid-December, as well as Nazareth’s Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony and Bath Borough’s Christmas House Tour.

Cross-seasonal attractions are also abundant for recreation during any season. Trexler Game Preserve has native and exotic animals roaming 1,700 acres. Or ride one of the world’s tallest wooden roller coasters at Dorney Park/Wildwater Kingdom in Allentown.

Springtime brings color, ceremony and excitement to the area. Attractions include the Vigilance Hose Fire Company’s Carnival, antique extravaganzas, a shad-fishing tournament along the Delaware River and a Bach Choral Festival. In May the Nazareth Chamber and Vigilance Hose Fire Co. partner to bring Nazareth Bikefest to town. Lots of great Harley’s, music, food and fun grace the borough for the one-day celebration of everything Harley. For a first-time event, complete with a bike show, we raised over $900 for the Nazareth Food Bank! Summer months in Nazareth are accented with a craft show at the historic Whitefield House (built in 1740) and Nazareth Day in the downtown business district and Borough Park. At Bath’s outdoor farmer’s market, home grown produce, fresh baked goods and a variety of Amish specialties are

available for purchase every Friday from June through September at Keystone Park. In August, the internationally acclaimed Musikfest takes place in Bethlehem. Also in August is the much-anticipated Annual Martin on Main, which takes place in downtown Nazareth.

Also don’t miss Nazareth’s world-famous Martin Guitar Company. For 178 years, the Martin Guitar Company has been acknowledged to be the finest in the world for producing acoustic instruments. The Martin Guitar Company made it a part of their mission to preserve and enhance its unique heritage and the history of music. The Martin Guitar Museum showcases a collection of historical instruments, memorabilia, photographs and other objects to tell Martin’s past and present stories and the company’s commitment to keeping the music alive.

Celebrating their 175h anniversary in 2008, Martin Guitar joined with the Borough of Nazareth, the Nazareth Chamber of Commerce and the Nazareth Downtown Association to introduce the first annual “Martin on Main” festival. This allows gifted musicians and singer/songwriters to share their talents.

Coinciding with the Martin Owner’s Club and Unofficial Martin Guitar Forum events at Martin Guitar, the festival features gifted musicians and singer/songwriters who share their talents. In addition, the event features plenty of food, beverages and artisans from the area. This annual festival is practically the signature event of downtown Nazareth. The Annual “Martin on Main” event is scheduled for the first Saturday in August.

Major entertainment programs take place at the State Theatre in Easton and Lehigh University’s Stabler Arena. Other attractions in the immediate area include: golf courses, tennis courts, hiking along the Appalachian Trail, skiing in the Poconos, rafting on Lehigh River and a professional theater.

C.F. Martin & Company C.F. Martin & Company is the oldest surviving maker of guitars in the world, the largest and most respected manufacturer of acoustic guitars in America and has had a profound impact on music. The company’s exquisitely crafted guitars have helped define all genres, from classical and country to folk and acoustic rock. The Martin Guitar Museum and Visitors Center is a destination for thousands of visitors every year, offering guests the chance to experience Martin’s impressive history and creating an interactive experience for guitar enthusiasts. In 2008, Martin celebrated its 175th Anniversary and has recently opened a beautiful Martin Guitar Museum.

The programs conducted at the YMCA are designed to both age appropriate and safe for participants, regardless of their abilities.

Our games are family based, and we have averaged over 2,300 fans per game. We play a 12-game regular season schedule, which culminates in a Championship game. Season ticket packages start as low as $8 per game (or $48 for the full season) and is an exciting event for people of the Lehigh Valley to attend on weekend nights.

Lehigh Valley IronPigs In 2008 LehighValley welcomed the brand new minor league baseball team, The IronPigs. the Triple-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies. Their home, the $48 million, 10,000-person-capacity, state-of-the-art Coca-Cola Park is in Allentown. A member of the International League, the IronPigs play a 144-game schedule (72 home games) that begins in early April and extends through early September. Coca-Cola Park is also home to many other non-baseball related events throughout the year.

Lehigh Valley Steelhawks The Steelhawks are a professional Arena Football team that plays its home games in the Lehigh Valley inside the Stabler Arena on the campus of Lehigh University. We were awarded a franchise in the Indoor Football League in June of 2010 and played our first season in 2011. Our season runs from February to the end of June. Our players

n 1740 when Moravians settled in the Nazareth Area, strong roots and a proud history were settled with it. A firm commitment to family and a strong work ethic are deeply rooted in the area.

Love of community is ever present and residents strive to maintain the clean, attractive area in which they live.

A strong commitment of the population live and raise children in this unique suburban setting which has led to historic growth rates. Continual growth is anticipated for several years. The combination of a serene, suburban setting with accessibility by both air and highway to major metropolitan areas will continue to attract people to the boroughs of Bath, Nazareth, Stockertown, Tatamy, the townships of Bushkill, and Upper and Lower Nazareth.

Although growth may be slowed somewhat by national and state fiscal conditions, the population is expected to increase an additional 10 to 12 percent in the area by 2014. The greater Nazareth area offers living in an environment that is quiet, attractive and growing.

Several private and government retirement facilities are also available in the area, providing healthcare and senior citizen services to men and women of retirement age. Transportation is available from these facilities and the Nazareth Area Chamber of Commerce will provide information upon request.

ince the days when C.F. Martin built the first Martin Guitar (1839) and the first cement mill began operation (1898), businesses and people have prospered.

These businesses recognized the tradition of hard work present in local residents and created satisfactory jobs, making the Nazareth/Bath Area an economically stable region. Economic development has historically been a priority of municipal officials.

The goal has been to maintain a balance between residential and business growth and the availability of open space. As the country’s economic development shifted away from manufacturing years later, the Nazareth/Bath Area was able to maintain most of its industries while diversifying into other support businesses such as service establishments, retail stores, wholesale facilities and professionals that complemented other industries. Today, the major employers and small family owned businesses enjoy the same benefits and continue to grow and prosper together.

An ideal location is a significant economic advantage for the Nazareth/Bath area, situated in the Lehigh Valley area in eastern Pennsylvania. The area is fortunate to have a coordinated and improved highway system. Routes 191 and 248 intersect in Nazareth and lead to Routes 22 and 33, which connect Nazareth Area businesses to markets in Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton.

Route 512 traverses Bath and connects with Routes 22, 248 and 33. I-78 is easily accessible from the Nazareth/Bath Area.

A variety of land sites and buildings are available and are suitable for new businesses and expansions. Storefronts in historic areas, and even historic buildings and land are available in well-planned and organized industrial parks.

Financing and site selection opportunities are available from numerous economic development organizations in the Lehigh Valley including the Lehigh Valley Economic Development Corporation, Northampton County and the Nazareth Area Chamber of Commerce.

Land Use Northampton County is comprised of 38 incorporated municipalities. Six of these — the boroughs of Nazareth, Tatamy and Stockertown and Upper Nazareth, Lower Nazareth, and Bushkill townships — are generally considered the Greater Nazareth Area and served by the Nazareth Area School System, the Bath Borough area is serviced by the Nazareth Area Chamber of Commerce. The total assessed valuation of taxable property within these seven municipalities as of 2005 was approximately $717 million.

The area also accounts for 32,406 acres or 13.3 percent of the total 243,044 acres in Northampton County.

The remaining acreage in each community is made up of a mix of: wholesaling, warehousing, transportation, utilities, communications, parks and recreation, public and quasi-public areas. All municipalities currently have a comprehensive plan, zoning ordinance, and subdivision regulations in place. The Nazareth Area Council of Governments is currently developing a 10-municipality comprehensive regional plan.

During the decade of the 1990s and early 21st century housing growth was dramatic and far exceeded the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s growth rate. During the 1990s, significant acreage in Lehigh Valley went to residential development and other uses. The greatest potential for residential expansion in the Nazareth/Bath Area lies in the townships of Bushkill, Upper Nazareth and Lower Nazareth, which account for 29,826 acres of the 32,406 total. The vast majority of new construction in these townships is singlefamily residences. As of November 2005, the average sale price of a home in the Nazareth/Bath Area was $373,000. In the townships, the requirements for on-site septic systems and/or well water systems, requiring one-acre lots plus, will most likely make multi-unit housing improbable.

Land use for retail/commercial enterprises is generally on par with communities of similar size and population in Northampton Country and can be fairly small in the Nazareth area. Moravian Hall Square Moravian Hall Square is nestled on 15 acres in downtown Nazareth and the foothills of Pennsylvania’s Blue Mountains, offering convenient and beautiful settings for retirement living. Utilities & Facilities Water Public water is available from the Pennsylvania American Water Company of Pennsylvania for the Boroughs of Nazareth, Tatamy, Stockertown and Upper Nazareth Township. Pennsylvania American also serves a limited area of Bushkill Township, the northernmost section of Lower Nazareth Township and several other neighboring communities. The remainder and largest portion of Lower Nazareth Township receives water service from the Lower Nazareth Township Water Authority. Bath Borough Water and Sewer Authority provide water service to the residents and businesses of the Borough.

Sewer The Nazareth Municipal Authority operates a sewage treatment plant serving the Borough of Nazareth and parts of Upper Nazareth, Lower Nazareth and Bushkill Townships. The Nazareth Municipal Sewage Treatment Plant has a capacity of 1.6 million gallons per day. The Boroughs of Bath, Stockertown and Tatamy also have sewer service available.

Electric Electric deregulation enables residents and businesses to select their provider. The Nazareth Area’s major suppliers are Pennsylvania Power & Light Company and Met-Ed. Natural Gas UGI Utilities, Inc. provides natural gas service to the Boroughs of Bath and Nazareth, a portion of the Borough of Tatamy and to parts of both Upper and Lower Nazareth Townships. UGI is also franchised to cover the southern section of Bushkill Township.
