Education experiencenewton.com

Education has been a significant part of Newton since its beginnings in the 1850s. A host of childcare facilities, several schools in the Newton Community School District, one private parochial school and nearby higher education institutions provide outstanding education to students of the Greater Newton area. Several childcare centers are located in Newton, offering services for infants through 12 years of age. These facilities include the YMCA Child Care Center, KinderCare Learning Center and Peck Child Development Center.

20

The Newton Community School District consists of Newton Senior High School for grades nine through 12 and B.C. Berg Middle School for students in seventh and eighth grades. There are also two intermediate elementary schools, Aurora Heights Elementary School and Woodrow Wilson Elementary School, for students in fourth through sixth grades. The school district also offers two primary elementary schools, B.C. Berg Elementary School and Thomas Jefferson Elementary School, for kindergarten through third grades, plus a 4-year-old preschool at Emerson Hough. Basics and Beyond, an alternative high school, is also available to high school juniors and seniors. For parents and students interested in receiving a private education, Newton Christian School offers schooling for grades kindergarten through eighth.

Higher learning can be found within the Newton community, with the esteemed institutions of Des Moines Area Community College and Buena Vista University offering top-rate academic programs to local students. Students of all ages and academic backgrounds attend the Newton Campus of Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) for both day and evening classes. Students study traditional arts and science coursework for college transfer programs designed for individuals seeking employment or looking to improve on current skills. With small class sizes, personalized attention from faculty and staff and a friendly learning environment, the Newton Campus of DMACC makes learning accessible to all. In August of 2002, the Buena Vista University Newton Center opened its doors on the Newton Polytechnic Campus in partnership with the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC). Since the Center’s inception, enrollments have increased every year. More local students are taking advantage of the opportunity to complete their bachelor’s degree without having to travel far from home. Students in search of post-secondary education have other options located between 35 and 75 miles from Newton: Iowa State University, located in Ames; University of Northern Iowa, located in Cedar Falls; Drake University, located in Des Moines; Grandview College, located in Des Moines; Central College, located in Pella; Grinnell College, located in Grinnell; and William Penn College, located in Oskaloosa.

Business and Industry Business and industry in Newton can be traced back to 1893 when Fred L. Maytag and a group of entrepreneurs went into business producing a safer threshing machine feeder. By 1902, the company was the largest feeder manufacturer in the world. In 1905, manufacturing expanded to include automobiles, corn huskers and, eventually, washing machines. At its peak in the mid-1900s, Maytag Corporation employed more 3,500 people locally and more than 29,000 worldwide.

22

On March 29, 2006, federal regulators approved the sale of Maytag to Whirlpool Corporation. Shortly thereafter, Whirlpool announced the closing of the Maytag Corporate Headquarters, resulting in

a complete pullout of a Maytag/Whirlpool presence in Newton. Change had come to town. But that change did not have to mean defeat. With assistance from federal, state and local governments, Newton community leaders and citizens went to work to attract new businesses and industry to Newton. On Sept. 15, 2006, the first race was held at the new $70 million Iowa Speedway, a 7/8th-mile track designed by former NASCAR Champion Rusty Wallace. In 2009 and 2010, the Iowa Speedway attracted more than 260,000 racing fans to their events.

In September 2008, TPI Composites opened a new 335,000-square-foot facility to make wind turbines, with a pledge to employ a least 500 by 2010. A few weeks later, Trinity Structural Towers opened a renovated portion of the former Maytag manufacturing plant and started making towers for the wind industry. Today that company occupies more than 300,000 square feet in the facility and employs 150.

Caleris, an information technology and outsourcing firm, opened their largest facility in a portion of the former Maytag Corporate office building, employing 150 with hopes of doubling that in the near future. Springboard Engineering, an entrepreneurial start-up company created by 50 former Maytag R&D staff, provides product development, prototyping and testing services for companies in the U.S. and internationally. By the fall of 2008, nearly 1,000 new jobs had been created in Newton. In many ways, Newton is typical of small, rural America. Newton is located right off Interstate 80, just 35 minutes from Des Moines, Iowa’s state capital. The population of Newton is nearly 16,000 and the town’s residents enjoy a

Healthcare The best care is close to home.

experiencenewton.com

When people are seeking healthcare, they shouldn’t have to choose between quality and accessibility. Those who live in Newton and Jasper County do not have to make that choice, because the best care is close to home. Skiff Medical Center is the heart of the healthcare community in Newton, having served as the hometown hospital since 1921. The city-owned hospital provides services to Jasper County residents in all major health areas, including general surgery, orthopedic surgery, radiology, obstetrics, emergency medicine, hospice, home care, laboratory, respiratory, audiology, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and massage therapy.

26

The Skiff Specialty Clinic hosts more than 20 physicians specializing in cardiology, dermatology, ENT, gastroenterology, nephrology, neurology, oncology, pulmonology and urology. Skiff also serves the nearby communities of Baxter, Colfax and Monroe through freestanding medical clinics. From chemotherapy to kidney dialysis, wound care to infusion therapy, Skiff provides state-of-the-art treatments for residents, eliminating the need to drive long distances for care. Skiff enjoys close partnership with many area providers, including the physicians of Newton Clinic, an independent, multi-specialty practice. Their 15 providers offer healthcare services in the areas of family medicine, obstetrics, gynecology, internal medicine and podiatry. Newton Clinic physicians offer 24/7 on-call coverage. Newton Clinic is owned by member physicians and employs about 60 full-time staff members. The 17,000-square-foot facility, located in the Ross Medical Arts Building, includes a full-service laboratory, full-service X-ray department, obstetric ultrasound unit, fetal non-stress testing unit, video flexible sigmoidoscope unit, treadmill, and three surgical procedure/casting rooms. The physicians of the Newton Clinic primarily admit patients to Skiff Medical Center. Newton and Jasper County are also home to a host of other health care practitioners, including chiropractors, dentists, pharmacists, optometrists and orthodontists.

In addition, when seniors in Jasper County are no longer comfortable living alone in their own home, they have a wide variety of options available to them in Newton and surrounding areas, including independent living facilities, nursing homes and assisted living complexes. When area residents want leading-edge medical services combined with personal, compassionate care, they need look no farther than their own hometown.
