ocated on the northeastern shoulder of the Mobile-Tensaw Delta, North Baldwin County is an outdoor recreation and ecotourism Mecca. Here fishermen can launch from multiple river and delta landings located north of Interstate 10. The Mobile-Tensaw Delta is the second-largest river delta in the U.S., second only to the Mississippi River Delta in size, and a prime location to see an abundance of wildlife and enjoy Bartram Canoe Trail, which is more than 200 miles long. Designated routes wind through the Delta along a series of interconnected waterways, which makes for a great ecotourism experience. The Delta is an environmental showplace that is 45 miles long and 16 miles wide, and encompasses about 300 square miles just north of Mobile Bay. The region features numerous interconnected stream systems, floodplains, swamps, bayous, lakes and forests, and it is home to an abundance of species of flora and fauna, including 500 plants, 300 birds, 126 fishes, 46 mammals, 69 reptiles and 30 amphibians. Ecosystems vary among 20,000 acres of open water; 10,000 acres of marsh; more than 70,000 acres of swamp; and more than 85,000 acres of bottomland forest. As a result of restoration and conservation efforts by a combination of federal, state and private citizens, 185,500 contiguous acres of federal and state property are now preserved in the delta. In 1974, Congress declared the Mobile-Tensaw Delta a National Natural Landmark. Fewer than 600 sites have received that honor. Another exceptional natural resource of North Baldwin County is the Bayou Jessamine Tract. This tract comprises 184 acres and houses the largest bald cypress tree in the state, standing at 131 feet tall. The tract borders the Bayou Jessamine, which is a principle route on the Bartram Canoe Trail and which also leads to Jug Lake and the Bottle Creek Indian Mounds. North Baldwin County’s natural resources are steeped in historical significance and beauty. Several nature preserves offer wildlife admirers and hunters the opportunity to enjoy their passions and

test their skills. Consequently, the Mobile-Tensaw Delta and Bartram Canoe Trail are great destinations for nature lovers, boaters, sport fisherman, photographers, hikers, kayakers, canoeists and bird watchers. History

bout 10,000 years ago, Native Americans were the first inhabitants of Baldwin County. Even today their impression on the area remains in the form of burial and residential mounds that can be seen along the Mobile-Tensaw Delta and other locales.

Bay Minette became the county seat in a very roundabout fashion. Originally, the Baldwin County seat was the town of McIntosh Bluff; however, it changed several times before remaining at the current location of Bay Minette. When it was time to officially name Bay Minette the county seat, the city of Daphne that held ownership of the title did not want to relinquish it. So Bay Minette residents took it upon themselves to remedy the situation. In the middle of the night they created a tactical diversion to snatch Baldwin County courthouse records and move them to Bay Minette. This sly act transferred the designation of county seat to Bay Minette, which still stands today. Baldwin County has played an important role, not only in the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s history, but also in the nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s history. Many famous battles were fought here, highlighting integral figures in U.S. history. Andrew Jackson fought the Creek Indians and banished them to the Trail of Tears for the massacre they carried out at Fort Mims. The War of 1812 brought upon many conflicts. Alabama joined the American Revolution forcing the state out of British control and into statehood.

The Civil War brought more battles to the county, this time between the states. The northern states and southern states fought each other from 1861 until 1865. Baldwin County was the site of the infamous 1864 battle of Fort Morgan (originally named Fort Bowyer). Several other altercations transpired in the northern region of the county and in Spanish Fort. Thousands of soldiers fell at Fort Blakely in 1865.

The Spanish made appearances throughout the 1500s and spent some time in what is now the town of Spanish Fort. French settlers arrived in Baldwin County and had a definite impact. These new residents influenced the culture and environment, which are still evident today. The French and Indian War was the catalyst that gave ownership of the county over to British control. The forming of the county began in 1809. It was named after Georgia resident Abraham Baldwin. He proved to have a great influence on the State of Georgia, serving as a governmental figure. Baldwin was also a participant in the Constitutional Convention and even signed the United States Constitution. Alabama did not become a state until 10 years later in 1819.

After things settled down in Baldwin County, immigrants began to arrive from all over the world, establishing themselves in various communities. Other cultural groups have made a home in Baldwin County over the past century and more are sure to come in the future, as it is one of the fastest-growing counties in the state. In the past 20 years the population has swelled from just over 98,000 to a total of about 172,000 people.

Location & Transportation

he North Baldwin County area includes Bay Minette and numerous other unincorporated communities: Blacksher, Bromley, Carpenterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Station, Clear Springs, Crossroads, Douglasville, Dyas, Gateswood, Hallâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Fork, Horseneck Fork, Hurricane, Latham, Little River, Lottie, Perdido, Pine Grove, Phillipsville, Rabun, Stapleton, Steelwood, Stockton, Tensaw, Vaughn and White House Fork. Baldwin County is located in the southwest corner of Alabama, bordered by the Gulf of Mexico and Mobile Bay; Bay Minette is the county seat. Monroe County lies to the north of Baldwin County; Mobile County is to the west while Escambia County, Florida lies 30 miles to the east, with Pensacola, Florida on the border. North Baldwin County is in proximity to many major cities, Mobile being its nearest neighbor at only 32 miles away. Montgomery is just 150 miles from North Baldwin County while New Orleans, Louisiana is only a bit farther at 172 miles. Birmingham, Alabama is a 237-mile trip and Atlanta, Georgia is 282 miles from the county. Approximately 400 to 500 miles away is Tennessee. There are a number of transportation options to venture in or out of North Baldwin County. Road travelers can journey over major highways running throughout the entirety of Baldwin County, such as Interstates 10 and 65; U.S. Highways 31, 90 and 98; as well as State Routes 59, 104, 180 and 182. A Greyhound station in Mobile provides bus transportation that makes taking the scenic route cross-country enjoyable.

A number of airports exist in Baldwin County to transport passengers to their destinations. Bay Minette Municipal Airport provides a variety of aviation services, facilities and amenities to its patrons. From fuel refills to a pilot lounge, it is a pleasant stop or spot to take off. Other airports in the county include Fairhope Municipal Airport, Foley Municipal Airport and Jack Edwards Airport. Mobile and Pensacola are approximately the same distance from Bay Minette. Mobile Regional and Pensacola airports make it easy to fly to locations such as Atlanta, Georgia; Charlotte, North Carolina; Memphis, Tennessee; Washington D.C., Dallas/Fort Worth and Houston, Texas. American Eagle, ASA, Continental Express, Delta, Northwest Airlink and US Airways each transport travelers wherever they are looking to go. The Baldwin Rural Area Transportation System (BRATS) provides public transportation service for residents of the county. Its service consists of fixed routes, education routes and work routes. Its everexpanding infrastructure traverses the county shuttling passengers to work, medical appointments and other important engagements. Its Baylic route connects the Eastern Shore of Baldwin County with downtown Mobile and its transit system. The BRATS system is a continuously growing public transportation service in the county, and an excellent transportation alternative.

Tourism Historical Parks Historic Blakely State Park was the site of the last major battle of the Civil War. Previously, it was home to Native Americans, a French settlement and a seaport town. Today, a multitude of historical war remnants remain on the park’s more than 3,800 acres, the largest National Register Site east of the Mississippi River. Blakeley Park houses more than 10 miles of nature trails, bicycle and horse paths. Historic Fort Mims State Memorial Park is the site of the Battle of Fort Mims, where more than 500 soldiers and civilians lost their lives to the Creek Indians in August 1813. This battle became recognized as one of the most horrendous battles in U.S. history. The Fort Mims Restoration Association will be commemorating the 200th Anniversary of the Fort Mims Battle in 2013. Bicentennial Park is a 367-acre park containing a two-mile nature trail with overlooks onto preserved wetland areas, which feature a unique natural habitat and home to a wide range of indigenous wildlife.

Attractions The Baldwin County courthouse building was completed in the early 1900s. Since its initial construction as a school, the building was renovated to accommodate the county government, whose offices are located there. The Chambless-Biggs House dates back to the 1890s. It was the home of the first postmaster of Lottie, Robert Chambless, and is now listed on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage. Constructed in the early 1800s, the David Moniac-Driesbach House was the home of a significant figure in North Baldwin’s history. Moniac was the first Native American to graduate from West Point Military Academy. The David Tate Plantation Site and Frank Earle House was not only a training depot for the soldiers of the Civil War; it’s the supposed location where Andrew Jackson ended his term in the Army to become president. The Cantonment Montpelier Site proved to be vital for the fallout after the Battle at Fort Mims from 1817-1821. Training took place at nearby David Tate’s Plantation and barracks were built to house soldiers. Fort Pierce and Pierce Mills Site was a community kept alive during the Creek Indian Wars. This industrious village was comprised of several mills and the state’s first public school. L&N Railroad Depot, built around 1904, is now home to the North Baldwin Chamber of Commerce.

Arts & Entertainment The North Baldwin Community Concerts organization encourages exhibition of the arts. Musical concerts and theatrical productions are primarily presented at the L.D. Owen Performing Arts Center at Faulkner State Community College. Enjoy hours of bowling excitement with regular play or go extreme with cosmic bowling at Strike City Lanes. If you’re not in the mood for bowling, visit the city’s skating rink, outdoor skate park, pool or baseball park.

Best Friends Art Gallery, located one street east of courthouse square, exhibits and sells a variety of fine art work. Custom framing and art classes are also available at the art gallery.

Events Christmas Fest, hosted by the Chamber, falls on the second Friday and Saturday of December. This two-day festival is highlighted with a parade, entertainment, arts and craft vendors and lots of wonderful food. Mardi Gras is one of the community’s annual favorites. The Saturday before Fat Tuesday, The Bay Minette Mystic Revelers host a parade, and Mardi Gras ball that is replete with traditional ceremonial regalia and lots of entertainment. The Stockton Civic Club holds its annual Wild Game Cook-Off in April at the Stockton Community Center. Guests sample exotic wild game dishes alongside traditional hunting and fishing camp favorites. Bid on live and silent auctions, and enjoy homemade cakes and desserts from local bakers. Every February the Heritage Junior Women’s Club hosts its annual Chili Cook Off at the Bay Minette Kids’ Park. Partnered with the Bay Minette Rotary Club, the event consists of a morning 5K “Chilly” run followed up with the chili cooking competition. RIDEYELLOW is a charity bike ride to raise money for cancer research hospitals and foundations. Typically held the third Saturday of June at Halliday Park, the event draws 500-plus cyclists and raises more than $50,000. Red, white and blue fly proudly in Bay Minette every Independence Day. The Bay Minette Rotary Club hosts a riveting fireworks display at Simmons Field. The last weekend in August brings the Fort Mims Living History Weekend to Tensaw. This event includes a reenactment of the Fort Mims Battle and the Burnt Corn Battle Reenactment with participants donning period dress and weapons. Food, beverages and live music make this event educational and enjoyable. Late September offers adventure seekers the challenge of the Delta Dash. The Delta Dash is a 5k+ obstacle course mud run through the delta of Stockton. It is hosted by The Young Professionals of the North Baldwin Chamber of Commerce to raise money to benefit their education initiatives. For more information visit www.deltadash.org. The Halloween Downtown Family Carnival is held every year and includes a costume contest and trick-or-treating. Hosted by the Bay Minette Civic Club, the proceeds earned from the carnival are donated to the community’s White Christmas Gift Program.

Lodging From hotels to motels to bed & breakfasts and inns, the options are plenty in the county. Shoreline condos in the Gulf Shores area are privy to spectacular balcony views of the Gulf of Mexico, while local camping grounds are also available. Lodging in Bay Minette is quaint and homey. The Windwood Inn is infused with warm, friendly character. Dedicated to their visitors, the inn provides a complimentary continental breakfast, swimming pools and amenities, including cable TV, with HBO, refrigerators and microwaves.

ome for a visit but stay for a lifetime! North Baldwin County is a true testament to Southern hospitality. Neighbors welcome in new residents and sustain lasting relationships with fellow residents. Homes exist for every budget, with properties ranging from modest to extravagant. Land is plentiful and adds to the rustic, woodsy atmosphere of the county.

In Bay Minette, prices of homes can range quite considerably, making it possible for anyone to find an affordable home in this city. Impressive homes with wrap-around porches, professional kitchens and other perks, set upon ample acreage with lakefront views, paint an attractive picture of homes priced at $900,000 or more.

Baldwin County is outfitted with a wide selection of apartments and condominiums for rent. Both newer units and older established communities appeal to many. Rental options give residents the time they need to decide which of the countyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s communities theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d like to permanently call home. Renters can expect to pay an average of about $600 per month for an apartment.

More economical, but still comfortable dwellings can be snapped up for anywhere from $350,000 to as low as $150,000. A gorgeous Creole-style home can be acquired for as little as $215,000 with updated features that coincide with todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s trends. Houses priced at $100,000 provide home ownership at a bargain. New construction developments offer affordable living, as this area still offers reasonably priced land, benefiting both builders and homeowners. The average price for a Baldwin County home is about $165,000.

New construction, as well as older homes, can be found throughout the Bay Minette area. A collection of historic homes exists in the vicinity of the Baldwin County Courthouse. These homes display the epitome of elegance steeped in richness and personality.

njoy a day of shopping in North Baldwin County. Bargain hunters can find just about anything in the assorted retail establishments in the area. From privately owned stores to national merchants, our local businesses are dedicated to serving their patrons. Specialty stores such as Delta Outfitters sell a great assortment of outdoor wear and gift ideas for all sportsmen and adventurers, while Southern Sass offers gifts for the southern belles in your life. Locally owned and operated, Furniture Mart in Bay Minette is located just two blocks off the town square. It carries a wide selection of fine contemporary and traditional-style furniture available at bargain prices. Also locally owned and operated, Uncle Grumpy’s Furniture is located just south of Bay Minette, in the Stapleton community. It is another great place to shop for furniture at bargain prices. Aaron’s Sales and Lease, with more than 1,500 locations across the nation selling and renting furniture, electronics, computers and appliances, has a convenient location in Bay Minette on Chamber Drive. Bay Minette Building Supply carries everything from bulk contractor needs to the one-time-buy of the do-it-yourselfer. Another flourishing local business is Tractor Supply Company. Here shoppers can find great buys on farm and yard equipment, animal and pet supplies, as well as an array of fixtures and fencing. Of course Wal-Mart carries everything from automotive supplies to small kitchen appliances to grocery items and clothing.

Dining

The flavors of North Baldwin converge in the variety of dining establishments in the area. For spicy sensations, visit Monterrey’s Mexican Grill on McMeans Avenue in Bay Minette for some tasty tacos, burritos or a side of guacamole. Another great restaurant in Bay Minette is the Shrimp Basket, located on Highway 59 South. Here diners can get their fill of delicious shrimp and other seafood specialties. Also located on Hwy 59 South is Church’s Chicken, an international chain restaurant with more than 1,500 locations. From fast food fare to fabulous fine dining, North Baldwin County is well equipped to satiate any size appetite.

Only about 20 minutes from Bay Minette, the Eastern Shore Centre is an open-air mall that is inviting to shoppers. Eastern Shore Centre features major retailers, such as Barnes & Noble Booksellers, Dillard’s and Belk. Just a bit farther away, in Foley, lies the Tanger Outlet Center featuring more than 120 manufacturer outlet stores. In neighboring Mobile, shopping centers put a diverse grouping of stores in an easily accessible location, great for one-stop shopping. The Bel Air Mall is home to more than 130 stores with anchors including JC Penney, Sears and Target. The Bass Pro Shopping Center is also nearby in Spanish Fort. This outdoor haven features everything one needs for camping, boating, fishing, hunting and other outdoor activities.

orgeous natural features accent the backdrop of North Baldwin County. Both adventure and leisure seekers can enjoy the bountiful parks and landscape by joining in the action or by kicking back and relaxing.

Impressively, the Mobile-Tensaw Delta covers more than 300 miles, making it the second-largest river delta in the nation. Named as a National Natural Landmark by Congress, this natural wonder is comprised of rivers, swamps, streams, marshes, coves and lakes that connect to the Gulf of Mexico. In addition, abundant wildlife inhabits the area.

for nature viewing, bird watching and exploration. The main attraction is Mound Island, home to 18 Native American earthen mounds of the Bottle Creek archaeological site. One of south Alabama’s best-known trips is the 11.5-mile loop for canoeists and kayakers on Rice Creek. Not only is Historic Blakely State Park an access point to the Tensaw River, it is also home to Perkin’s Hurricane Landing. The river is a popular spot for kayaking, canoeing and other water sports. Hiking through the park, visitors can view plenty of wildlife and lush plants. Fishing is exciting with more than 126 species of fish swimming through the delta waters. Specifically, the Alabama Bass Trail is a great place to drop a line as one of five official bass angler trail destinations in the state.

Bird Watching

The Alabama Coastal Birding Trail, arranged as a series of loops, describes the most frequented birding spots. Detailed directions are provided in a sequential fashion, but it is not necessary to follow the complete loop. Suggestions are given for some of the birds that may be expected at each site. The Mobile-Tensaw Delta loop in North Baldwin County begins at the intersection of I-65 and AL 225. In this area northeast of Mobile, the waters of the Alabama and Tombigbee rivers merge into the tangled Mobile Delta. Though best explored by boat, these bottomlands can be accessed at several points along the eastern periphery. The main attraction for birders is the abundance of breeding songbirds; other species, such as large waders and kites, also can be seen.

Coastal Hiking Boating and Fishing

Boating is an accessible hobby in the Mobile Delta with over 20 boat launches and access sites located in the area. Boat landing sites include: Boatyard Lake on State Hwy 59; Cliff ’s Landing, Cloverleaf Landing, Dixie Landing, Patrick’s Landing and Live Oak Landing off Hwy 225; Hubbard’s Landing on Tensaw Lake; Lower Bryant Landing along State Hwy 225; and Upper Bryant Landing located on Upper Bryant Landing Road. Bluegill and redear sunfish, known as bream, are fish very common to the area. The shallow bays near the causeway are filled with bream in late spring each year, much to the local fishermens’ delight. Arguably, one of the best spots in Alabama to catch the redspotted sunfish is the Mobile Delta. Anglers typically find that saltwater fish, redfish, speckled trout and flounder are abundant in the fall. Lower Tensaw, Blakely, Apalachee and Mobile Rivers are among the best locations to catch these fish.

Kayaking and Canoeing

A must of the expansive delta area is the Alabama Bartram Canoe Trail, the only official state canoe trail. The Trail, which traverses the swampy, marshy landscape of the Mobile-Tensaw River Delta, is navigable for more than 200 miles and offers great opportunities

Visitors to North Baldwin County can hike the well-traveled trails of Little River or Blakely State Parks, both of which offer some of the best that coastal hiking has to offer. The mission of the Alabama Hiking Trail Society is to connect people with nature. In recent years several different chapters of the Alabama Hiking Trail Society have come together and have been instrumental in making Alabama a hiking destination, advocating and planning hiking trails throughout the state. In Baldwin County, the LA Hikers are the local Gulf Coast Chapter of the Alabama Hiking Trail Society.

Golfing

Golfing is at its best in the state of Alabama, due to the spectacular facilities of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. Comprised of 18 courses, totaling 378 holes, the trail spans more than 100 miles. The closest facility to North Baldwin lies in Mobile at Magnolia Grove. The 54 holes on this course are surrounded by expansive greenery, lakes, creeks and a serene waterfall. Holly Hills Country Club in Bay Minette features a nine-hole course covering more than 3,000 yards and a four-tee driving range. Just south of Bay Minette, is the community of Steelwood. The 18-hole course at the Steelwood Country Club facility features 7,096 yards of golf from the longest tees, for a par of 72. In addition, rookie and advanced golfers alike will enjoy Timber Creek Golf Course in Malbis, located next to the Eastern Shore Mall.

he foundation of a good education is invaluable to shape a student’s future. A top-notch curriculum is extremely important; however, it is also athletics and extra curricular activities that form well-rounded individuals.

The Baldwin County School System is well aware of this. Serving nearly 27,000 students, it is the fifth-largest school system in the state, encompassing about 50 school campuses. It is also the largest employer in the county. More than 50 percent of the teachers hold master’s degrees. The staffs of these fine institutions are dedicated to providing an excellent education. Pride in education has deep roots in North Baldwin County, as it was the first location in the state to build a public school.

The North Baldwin Center for Technology, located in Bay Minette, is a technical school serving Baldwin County High School, Daphne High School and Spanish Fort High School. Students here participate in technical classes that prepare them for future career choices in a technological field. Both high school credit and college credit can be earned. Outside of the public institutions, numerous private schools exist within the county for students in grades kindergarten through 12th.

The Baldwin County School System has been the recipient of awards that show its commitment to deliver top-notch education to all students in the county. The 2012 Digital Renaissance equipped every student in the high school classrooms with a MacBook. In 2007, the system was awarded the Magna Award for its successful efforts to improve technology in its schools. Only 15 school systems were granted this honor. In 2004, the Baldwin County School System received the National Civic Star Award, which only one school in the country receives each year at the national level. The American Association of School Administrators and Sodexho School Services present this award to schools that show remarkable involvement with organizations in the community to improve the educational experience. It is also a seven-time What Parents Want awardwinning school system.

Higher Education

Faulkner State Community College, a public two-year institution located in Baldwin County, Alabama, has three beautiful, conveniently-located campuses in Bay Minette, Fairhope and Gulf Shores. The college, one of the 13 original two-year colleges created by an act of the Alabama Legislature in 1963, is under the authority of the State Board of Education. Faulkner State is a member of the Alabama Community College System that consists of 21 comprehensive community colleges, four technical colleges and one military institution; Athens State University, an upper division college; and extensive workforce development initiatives, including the Alabama Industrial Development Training Institute and the Alabama Technology Network. Economic Development

It is hard to imagine a part of the country with more growth potential than Bay Minette and North Baldwin County. As recounted in his book Faith and Good Works, “Mr. Jimmy” Faulkner tells how the North Baldwin industrial development team recruited business after business in the last half of the last century, many of whom are still major industrial employers of the area—for example, International Paper, Quincy Compressor, Dental EZ, Baldwin Pole and Piling and the Gulf Packaging Company. The industrial growth for this century is being led by today’s team of the North Baldwin Chamber of Commerce, the City of Bay Minette and its Industrial Development Board, Baldwin County government leaders, utilities companies and the Baldwin County Economic Development Alliance (BCEDA). Business & Industry Continued... Manufacturing is another major industry for the area. A wellestablished transportation network of rail systems, airports, interstates, inland waterways and deep-water ports benefit businesses by providing efficient distribution points for their goods. Therefore, this area is fast becoming a hot spot for industry location. North Baldwin County is the home of the South Alabama Megasite, a 3,000 acre certified site that offers businesses the opportunity to benefit from the excellent transportation links and shovel ready industrial sites. A multitude of resources exist for companies to start, boost or relocate their business through financing options and supplemental education and training. In addition to bank loans, grants, tax incentives, bonds and other nontraditional loans are available to supplement funding. Manufacturers like Goodrich Aerospace and Standard Furniture are mainstays on the county’s manufacturing scene. This offers employment opportunities in manufacturing plants and the transportation and trade sectors. Non-manufactures in Baldwin County are very important sources of employment. Baldwin County retailer, Wal-Mart holds the number two spot for the top 10 non-manufacturers in the county. However, it is the Baldwin County Board of Education that has the highest employment rate in the county. In collaboration with the state’s community college system, Alabama Industrial Development Training (AIDT) provides quality workforce development for Alabama’s new and expanding businesses. It also expands opportunities for citizens through the jobs these businesses create. The BCEDA was formed in 1994 to take on industrial recruiting on behalf of the five chambers of commerce in the county. Its mission quickly broadened to include other things that were too broad for a single city or chamber to take on like workforce development, a virtual business incubator, community development and large regional projects involving several counties (or states). In 2009, this organization was recognized as one of the top 10 economic development organizations in the country with $1.8 billion in capital investment and 3,486 new jobs created. This was the third time it was included in the top 20. Industrial growth is booming in North Baldwin County due to its great benefits for businesses, including well established transportation links. For example, the Port of Mobile has seen 30 to 40 percent growth annually since its set-up. The Port is joining forces with Houston and Tampa to jointly promote their ports to shippers in Asia to further develop transpacific container work. Industrial growth cannot happen without a strong workforce. Because our labor shed spans several counties, the Southwest Alabama Workforce Development Council was set up with 40 of our major employers and all of our community colleges and K-12 school districts across eight counties. The purpose of the group is to assist employers in actively forecasting workforce demands, i.e., how many people and what kinds of skills, to meet future needs, so the state’s education system can produce and supply the right mix of workers at the needed time. For example, Faulkner State Community College has been engaged in actively developing programs that are tied directly to area business and industry needs. Over the past years, Faulkner State has started a Technical Dual Enrollment Program in partnership with the Baldwin County Public School System. This partnership is allowing the college to utilize the two Career Technical Centers for the purpose of providing high school students with college credit in their area of focus during the day, and then using the facilities to offer adult education in the evenings. Areas included are Welding, HVAC, Construction Sciences, Automotive and Drafting.

xpanding from its origins as a 12-bed medical center, North Baldwin Infirmary now sits as the center of healthcare services in North Baldwin County. The 70-bed hospital is well equipped to handle everything from general procedures to emergency situations. As part of Infirmary Health, it employs experienced healthcare professionals dedicated to delivering exceptional care and a qualified, talented medical staff supporting the hospital. The state-of-the-art Diagnostic and Imaging Center puts patients at ease while providing high-quality examinations. Patients at North Baldwin Infirmary are no longer wary of MRIs. With a revolutionary open-bore design, the MRI eliminates feelings of claustrophobia. Digital mammography allows for a higher resolution image that results in more accurate diagnoses. The 3D-CT produces a three-dimensional image of internal organs that provide physicians with a comprehensive picture. The 16-slice CT scanner offers an in-depth look into the body. With the picture archiving and communication system, a patient’s diagnostic images are immediately available for viewing by their physician. In the 13-bed emergency department, patients receive accurate and rapid diagnoses. A team of highly trained physicians and nurses are available 24 hours a day to respond and treat emergencies ranging from minor injuries and illnesses to cardiac events. Three cardiac exam rooms are set up to monitor potential heart attack patients and ensure prompt intervention.

North Baldwin Infirmary’s advanced surgical department includes preoperative and postoperative care areas and two GI rooms for endoscopies and colonoscopies. In some cases, patients are able to experience the convenience of an outpatient surgery. The state-of-the-art Birth Center at North Baldwin Infirmary takes new mothers from prenatal to post-birth. Childbirth classes provide information about pregnancy, labor, newborn care, CPR and safety. The Birth Center offers a home-like environment to make families feel more comfortable during the birth process. A technically advanced infant security system is also in place. The full-service labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum (LDRP) suites—among the largest in the region—allow mother and baby to remain in the same room throughout their stay. North Baldwin Infirmary also provides a fitness center, rehabilitation services, a senior behavioral health program and a skilled nursing facility, Oakwood—North Baldwin’s Center for Living.

and other important emergency tools, like CPR. Other volunteer fire departments are located in Pine Grove, Rabun, Stockton, White House Forks, Crossroads, Stapleton, Lottie, Perdido and Tensaw.

County government employs a four-member commission with one of the commissioners serving as chairman. The commission is staffed by a county clerk/treasurer who serves to enforce policies the commission puts into place. Bay Minette serves as the headquarters of county government making the city vital to the entirety of the county, which is made up of 12 municipalities governed by mayors and council members or city administrators.

The Baldwin County Emergency Management Agency offers training in emergency situations. This service can help citizens become better prepared to deal with crises and to assist others while waiting for help to arrive.

The Baldwin County Sheriff â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Office oversees the safety of the entire county, however most communities have their own police force. The City of Bay Minette, for example, is equipped with a force of 23 certified police officers and four members of the police auxiliary. The city of Bay Minette also has an outstanding fire department, able to respond to fires, medical emergencies, hazardous material situations, extractions and other types of rescues. The department was formed in 1908 but was not an official entity until 1960. Today, the department is staffed by 14 career firefighters and three part-time firefighters, plus 19 volunteers, who respond to approximately 1,700 calls annually. The Bay Minette Fire Department also provides educational programs to residents who want to learn more about fire safety

Worship & Organizations

pirituality has been an important part of the fabric of North Baldwin County for hundreds of years. A perfect example of this is seen in the historic churches that stand today. These houses of worship remain as reminders of the past.

Montgomery Hill Baptist Church was built in 1854 and is the oldest church in the county. It is on the National Register of Historical Places. Montpelier Methodist Church, built in the early 1900s, also still stands today. These two churches solidified the presence of religion in the area. Today, about 80 houses of worship exist in the North Baldwin area, encompassing various religious groups. Some of the churches in Bay Minette are First Baptist Church, First United Methodist church, First Assembly of God, New Day Ministries, Bay Minette Church of Christ and St. Agatha Catholic Church. Several different civic organizations impart leadership and provide altruistic service throughout the community by offering diverse services and by filling various needs based on individualized missions. Some of the civic clubs serving Bay Minette and North Baldwin County include the Bay Minette

Kiwanis Club and the Rotary Club, Heritage Junior Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Club, and the Bay Minette Civic Club. Numerous community organizations allow for volunteers to become involved in serving the community in a variety of ways. Examples of these organizations are Habitat for Humanity, the North Baldwin Literacy Council, Friends of the Bay Minette Public Library, North Baldwin Community Concerts and the North Baldwin Infirmary Auxiliary. National organizations are also present in Baldwin County. The American Red Cross and United Way are two such organizations that are very active throughout the county. United Way is involved with more than 30 special groups within Baldwin County and nearby areas. These include Baldwin Youth Services, CARE House, Lighthouse Domestic Violence Shelter, Baldwin County Mental Health Center, Maryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Shelter, the North Baldwin Health Care Foundation and many more.
