Universal City-Nor th Hollywood Chamber of Commerce

n 1869, Isaac Lankershim and I.N. Van Nuys purchased the southern half of the San Fernando Valley, about 19,500 acres, and planted wheat, thus creating a bountiful agricultural industry. As years passed the town began to grow in commercial development under the Weddington family with a general store and hotel, and later, a post office, rail depot, school and blacksmith all adding to the farming and fruit orchard community. In 1910, the Bank of Lankershim opened and the Lankershim Businessmen’s Association was formed.

By 1914 Lankershim Businessmen’s Association became the Lankershim Chamber of Commerce, and just one year later filmdom’s first self-contained, unincorporated community decided to make movies, known as Universal City. In 1923 the Chamber supported joining the city of Los Angeles, allowing the passage of a $378,000 bond issue to purchase 99-acre North Hollywood Park, and changing the town name from Lankershim to North Hollywood. North Hollywood High School opened with 800 students, graduating its first class in 1928. The Board of Education was asked to employ teachers who were already residents of North Hollywood, creating jobs and education opportunities right in the area. In 1939 a junior high school was developed. After World War II came post-war suburbia and major growth. The area’s rapid growth caused a

housing shortage, but soon the demand led to a construction boom, transforming the valley from a predominately agricultural area into a sprawling suburban community. As the television industry grew and film production began to slow down, the Music Corporation of America bought Universal Studios in 1959 and reopened the studio tour portion that had been discontinued after silent movies became a thing of the past. The tour quickly became popular, and with the Sheraton Universal Hotel built in 1969, tourism began to excel, bringing in more than 4 million visitors annually. More visitors equaled more traffic, which led to the Ventura and Hollywood freeways opening. Universal Studios celebrated 100 years in production of film in 2012 and is one of the major employers in Los Angeles. Universal City North Hollywood has not only advanced dramatically in the last century, but is poised for unprecedented growth as the area keeps redefining itself as a major business, residential and arts district; all at the crossroads of the Southern California lifestyle.

These schools ensure academic and personal achievement, active parents groups and a wide-range of extracurricular programs, which makes for an exceptional educational experience for everyone.

Five public schools in North Hollywood take students from K-12. All five of them work towards the goal of educational excellence, supplying coursework, activities and sports programs, which all promote a well-rounded student. Lankershim Elementary School and Bellingham Elementary, K-5, allow for opportunities to achieve a high academic and social potential at a young age. The school also encourages parent involvement and celebrates diversity while fostering discipline. Walter Reed Middle School hosts over 80 educators for their 6-8 grade students. This California distinguished school has students participate in artistic endeavors

including band and choral programs, a wide range of extracurricular activities and sports programs in addition to academic coursework. North Hollywood High School serves about 3,600 students, preparing them for college and post-grad vocations. In addition, the school offers students opportunities to enroll at two magnet schools including Biological Science Magnet and the Highly Gifted Magnet. Students can also prepare for careers in the education and transportation fields by attending classes associated with Acquiring Bilingual Leaders in Education and the Transportation Career Academy. A long list of culturally diverse and interest-related clubs accommodates students with an affinity for everything from computers to drama to art. East Valley High School serves about 800 students, four small learning communities: Business, Media & Communication, 10th Grade Academy and Freshmen Academy. Continuing educational opportunities are in abundance for residents of Universal City North Hollywood, just a quick drive from the county’s top-rated institutions of higher learning. California State University Northridge (CSUN), a member of the 20-campus California State University System, is the third-largest college or university in Los Angeles County and serves almost 30,000 students seeking bachelor’s and master’s degrees. CSUN offers majors in more than 50 areas of study and boasts a 353-acre campus ideally located in the northern San Fernando Valley. Los Angeles Valley College, a member of the Los Angeles Community College system located in Van Nuys, was founded in 1949 and presently employs 250 full-time and 300 part-time instructors. With an enrollment of more than 17,000 students, the college offers transfer programs, vocational training and adult educational classes, while scheduling recreational and cultural activities for both students and community residents. Other nearby colleges and universities within commuting distance include: Kings College and Seminary, National University, University of California Los Angeles, University of Southern California, Pepperdine University’s Valley Campus, California Institute of the Arts, California Institute of Technology, West Coast University and Woodbury University.
