Chairman’s Welcome I am honored to represent our community as the North Mason Chamber of Commerce 2014 Chairman of the Board. As the leader of this vibrant organization, my intention is simple – to do my best at this chamber to help people come together, get business, and make it a very positive experience. That’s my whole agenda. That will be my legacy.

As a resident and small-business owner, I understand the challenges involved in maintaining, growing and managing a successful business, especially in a rural area. My family has enjoyed our property on the North Shore of Hood Canal since 1945, and I started my first painting company in 1982. Through the years, I have learned the value in building relationships throughout Mason County and beyond, and organizations such as our chamber provide the avenue for me to do just that.

Our monthly luncheons and business after hours events provide the stage for our 280 members to meet and share ideas. In fact, our members often tell me how much they appreciate our low-key, informal style, which is driven by our membership itself as we represent such a wide range of business interests. At our monthly luncheons, you may be seated next to a government official on one side and a personal trainer on the other – one in a suit and tie and one in workout shorts. As a professional painter, I’m happy to report that I feel comfortable stopping in at a chamber event as part of my workday, sometimes in my work clothes. After all, I’m a member. That’s what I am first – a member.

Our Visitor Guide and Membership Directory has served as an important resource for longtime residents, business owners, visitors and those relocating to our area every year.

SERVING OUR COMMUNITY

Belfair Licensing Belfair License has been serving North Mason and the surrounding area since 2000. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of the chamber providing vehicle and vessel licensing services, fishing and hunting licenses, marriage licenses and notary public services on behalf of the county and the state. There is a nominal service fee that is added to the state and county fees for most services, which assists in the promotion of the North Mason Chamber of Commerce.

EDUCATE, EMPOWER AND INSPIRE

The North Mason School District Submitted by David Peterson, Superintendent, North Mason School District The North Mason School District’s motto is “To Educate, Empower and Inspire All Students.”

The motto comes from our district’s strategic plan, developed with the participation of over 100 community members and many staff members. We expect all students to meet or exceed high academic standards by acquiring the knowledge and skills essential for success on state and national assessments, in postsecondary education, the world of work and citizenship.

While the motto is simple to remember, it is an enormous task. Fortunately, the district has a highly professional and dedicated staff and a community that is engaged in and supportive of the schools.

Parents, community members and local businesses offer strong support for the district, which consistently passes school levies including a $49 million capital projects bond that is allowing us to build a NEW HIGH SCHOOL opening fall 2015, fully modernize the current high school to become a quality middle school, and complete several other important safety and mechanical improvements across the district.

Kids who go to school here are lucky. It is a beautiful place to live, work and go to school. The district serves the families living in our semi-rural area including the towns of Allyn, Belfair, Tahuya and Grapeview, as well as Dewatto and the tri-lakes area of Mission, Tiger and Panther Lakes. The district has a comprehensive high school, one middle school, two elementary schools and two alternative programs meeting the needs of 2,200 students.

Parents and community members are actively involved in our volunteer programs and many community groups partner with the district to support families beyond basic education. Through the generosity of the community, last year’s seniors received nearly $1 million in scholarships to higher education.

We are proud to have successfully improved student performance in core subjects while protecting our liberal arts values of educating “the whole child” and providing a large number of clubs, activities and athletic programs that engage over 75 percent of our students. We are finding ways to increase services to students and families while being conservative stewards of taxpayer money. Staff members are helping students master a much stronger set of basic skills as well as becoming independent, complex thinkers able to keep up with a dynamic world.

With our community, we are working to make sure our schools are good places to learn. We are succeeding.

CARING FOR MASON COUNTY

For those who live and work in North Mason, world class health care is available right here. Whether you are looking for a primary care physician, a no-wait doctor visit or urgent care when moments count, you can find it all conveniently located in Belfair. Harrison Belfair was created in partnership with North Mason Public Hospital District No. 2. The campus began serving patients in April 2009 with 12-hour urgent care seven days a week; Harrison HealthPartners Belfair Primary Care on weekdays; and outpatient lab and imaging services.

At this campus, some of the region’s most experienced doctors, nurses and other health care professionals are all conveniently available every day of the year. For emergencies big and small, the Mason County Fire District works with Harrison, as well as other area hospitals, such as St. Anthony in Gig Harbor and Mason General Hospital in Shelton, to help stabilize and transport patients when time and care really count. We are fortunate that our local community supports our fire districts by consistently passing levies so that the districts can invest in the latest triage and life-saving equipment.

To the north, Harrison Bremerton serves as the medical center's acute-care center and home to cardiovascular services, including open-heart surgery, oncology, critical care, inpatient and outpatient surgery, orthopedics, rehabilitation, a sleep center, and 24/7 emergency care.

PROTECTING MASON COUNTY

Mason County Sheriff’s Department Since 1854, 42 elected or appointed individuals have served as Sheriff of Mason County. In November of 2006, Sheriff Casey Salisbury was elected as Mason County Sheriff.

Thanks to a partnership with a local family, the Sheriff ’s Office was able to maintain a substation for patrol deputies and volunteers to work from, but not as a north precinct office.

Since then, Belfair, Allyn and the surrounding northern portion of the county have experienced tremendous population growth and new business development. Examples include the construction of the Harrison Hospital Primary and Urgent Care Facility, modifications to State Route 3 and sewer development in both Allyn and Belfair. Combined, these and other commercial developments have created an extraordinary policing challenge for the Mason County Sheriff ’s Office.

In 2013, the Sheriff ’s efforts proved successful, and today an equitable distribution of staff, based on population in the northern part of the county, operates out of this new facility in Belfair.

Sheriff Salisbury was successful in opening a dedicated precinct in Belfair in 2007, but due to multiple challenges including severe budget cuts, was able to operate the facility for only one year.

Chief Ryan Spurling has taken the reigns as the first Chief Deputy for Belfair. He has completed a 25-year career with the Washington State Patrol and a 22-year career in the military, serving in the United States Marine Corps and the United States Army Reserves. Chief Spurling also has a degree in Business Management and Criminal Justice.

THE SPLENDOR OF HOOD CANAL

Take a Walk on the Theler Wetlands

The Theler Community Center and Wetland Trails grew out of a gift to the children and people of Belfair from long-time resident Sam Theler. His will included a bequest to provide local children and citizens with a “gymnasium and/or [recreation] center… [to] be used as much as feasible for public gatherings and meetings.” Sam’s original gift now includes the community center, a wildlife preserve and a recreation park enjoyed by thousands of visitors each year.

Located at the head of Washington’s scenic Hood Canal, the Theler Wetlands feature more than three miles of interpretive walking trails, a popular spot for runners and joggers, or those who simply seek a

refreshing stroll in nature. Photography enthusiasts enjoy a kaleidoscope of opportunities to capture the wonder of nature. The trails give access to plants, birds and animals in their natural habitats – forests, wetlands, saltwater and freshwater marshes, swamps and river estuaries. Four separate trails are open to the public free of charge during daylight hours, seven days a week.

The Theler Community Center and Wetland Trails offer recreational, educational and social opportunities for everyone, and a host of volunteer opportunities for local residents. Visitors are asked to note that pets are not permitted on the wetlands trails.

NEIGHBORHOOD SPOTLIGHT

The low-tide mud run is just one of the unique activities offered up during the Allyn Community Association’s Allyn Days and Geoduck Festival held at Allyn Waterfront Park every July.

ON CASE INLET … Allyn Nestled along the shores of Case Inlet’s North Bay on South Puget Sound, the charming town of Allyn is well known for its friendly, tranquil environment and strong community spirit as evidenced by the dedicated volunteers who power the Allyn Community Association (ACA), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that serves the communities of Allyn, Victor, Grapeview, South Shore, Mason, Benson and Trails End Lakes. The ACA is known for its ever-popular two-day event – its annual Allyn Days and Geoduck Festival, occurring at the beautiful Allyn Waterfront Park and gazebo, which is managed by the Port of Allyn. Public boat launching is available adjacent to the historic Allyn Pier, first built in 1922 and revamped with a pump-out station and guest moorage.

On sunny days, residents enjoy an unobstructed view of 14,410-foot Mt. Rainier as it looms on Allyn’s southeast horizon. Allyn features a shopping center, post office, a chainsaw carving school and wine-tasting shop, kayak rentals, two restaurants and specialty coffee houses.

AT HOOD CANAL … Belfair Belfair is recognized as one of the county’s largest designated urban growth areas, serving as its main commercial center. ON CASE INLET … Grapeview Grapeview is a serene waterfront community located along Puget Sound, just south of Allyn. The small town is recognized as the site of the first vineyards and winery in the Pacific Northwest. Visitors are offered easy access to Fair Harbor Marina and Port of Grapeview public boat launch located near both Treasure Island and Stretch Island. The Grapeview Community Association hosts the popular Grapeview Water and Art Festival the last Saturday in July, which is attended by thousands – some by car and some by boat.

ON SOUTH PUGET SOUND ‌ Shelton Shelton is the largest and only incorporated city in Mason County, serving as its county seat of government.

The Boys of Summer. A familiar sight on Mason Lake, 50-year-old Jeff Purcell remains loyal to the art of slalom skiing as he has done for decades. ON HOOD CANAL’S NORTH SHORE … Tahuya Set at the tip of the Tahuya Peninsula is the remote community of Tahuya. This tiny town is located 15 miles south of Belfair along Hood Canal’s North Shore Road. It overlooks the Great Bend in Hood Canal and is home to Summertide Resort & Marina and the 23,000-acre Tahuya State Forest, home to off-road vehicle (ORV) trails, campgrounds and freshwater lakes.

Tahuya residents enjoy the town’s seclusion, celebrating its quirky heritage and lifestyle at the annual Tahuya Day Parade, held the first Saturday of July.

ON HOOD CANAL’S SOUTH SHORE … Union Union, a picturesque little town positioned along Route 106, is a charming community recognized as the first arts colony in Washington State. That heritage is still felt today through Union’s unique local shops and eateries. Harmony Hill Retreat Center and Anna’s Bay Center for Music are both located in Union.
