W
The village takes great pride in its standards of excellence in residential living. Its treelined streets are your gateway to varied architecture of stately homes situated on large wooded lots. Our residents benefit from the abundant award-winning green spaces
that are available for recreation. They also enjoy the relaxing atmosphere of a country setting. These standards of excellence have attracted a racially and ethnically diverse population of involved and active residents that participate in, and demand, high standards of performance from village government, the school districts and other institutions and governmental bodies that impact our community. There is no better place to live in the Chicago metropolitan area or to raise a family and enjoy the benefits of a diverse community working together.
The village government is continually striving to find ways to support the success of our business community. We continue to partner with the business community in order to retain our vibrant business base and to attract new businesses. We encourage you to read on and learn more about our village. We also welcome your involvement in our vision and mission as we build upon our standards of excellence in making the Village of Olympia Fields a preeminent community. Village of Olympia Fields is a place in the Chicago metropolitan area where people of diverse backgrounds can live and work together for an exciting and rewarding future for our residents, visitors and business community. Sincerely, Linzey D. Jones - Village President
he Village of Olympia Fields is nestled amidst rolling prairie land, recalling a panorama of what Charles Beach saw in the fall of 1913, when he stepped off the train in Flossmoor and began walking in a southeasterly direction. He was intent on finding a location to establish a golf course catering to Chicago’s wealthy elite. After an afternoon of wandering through the lush woodlands and rolling terrain of what is now the Village of Olympia Fields, Beach decided the area would be ideal for not just one, but several, courses. He also envisioned a residential community growing up around this multitude of grand golf courses.
T & HISTORY
A couple of days later, Beach invited his friend, James Gardner, to explore the area and shared his dream. Gardner was as enthusiastic as Beach, and the two set about developing the magnificent 72hole Olympia Fields Country Club, which still stands today, more grand than ever. Charles Beach not only founded the Olympia Fields Country Club, but he became the first president
of the Village of Olympia Fields, which was incorporated in 1927. James P. Gardner became the second president of the Olympia Fields Country Club. From the onset, the village’s history has been linked to the country club established by these two “pioneers.” In 1927, the handful of area residents set about registering local inhabitants to vote, thereby establishing their residency and facilitating a referendum for incorporation. Of the 58 people voting, 42 said “yes” and the Village of Olympia Fields was officially established. As of 2010, the village population is 5,143. Today, the village’s residents enjoy a host of modernday conveniences, coupled with the pleasant ambiance of quiet country living and a wide variety of recreational, cultural and leisure-time amenities for all ages. Just as in the early part of the 20th century when Chicago residents were looking for an alternative to the hectic pace of city life, 21st century “settlers” are discovering Olympia Fields to be a community with much to offer.

RECREATION hile Olympia Fields was first established as a golf course community, it offers many more recreational opportunities to its residents today through the broad range of activities and programs offered by the Olympia Fields Park District. The centerpiece of the Park District’s 11 park sites, encompassing 142 acres, is the award-winning Sgt. Means Park. The design of the 20-acre park, which roughly takes on the shape of the State of Illinois, was the result of an international design competition titled, “A New American Green.” Originally part of a 600-acre farm, established in 1918 by early Olympia Fields resident A.J. Mason, the challenge of the Park District’s sponsored competition was to create a public park that would serve as a community center for recreation and special events.
W
Highlights of the park’s unique and imaginative design include: wood pavilions and a trellis that visually ties in the farm building to the rest of the park, a landscape that celebrates the unique character of Midwest flora, and surrounding native woodlands and rolling prairies. Its symbolic encapsulation of the history of the village and its founders, as well as a series of stepped terraces, suggest an architectural landscape linking the park’s wide-open spaces, baseball and soccer fields, tennis courts, a unique 18hole Frisbee Disc Golf Course, an accessible playground, picnic areas and winding walkways. Irons Oaks was established in 1979 under joint operation of the Olympia Fields and Homewood-Flossmoor Park Districts. From its inception, Irons Oaks has grown from a 6-acre park to a 37-acre nature preserve. Irons Oaks
