History

R

Rich in culture and history, Ontario will equally please the history buff and the casual observer of landmarks. Ontario’s history begins with the Oregon Trail and continues to blaze in today’s hectic climate.

Beginning in the mid-19th century, travelers passed through Ontario as they made the treacherous journey from the east looking for a better life. Many sought the mild climate of the region along with the desire to own land. In the 1840s, married settlers were able to obtain free land for their families.

Additionally, Oregon was spared many of the diseases common in the east during this time. As such, Oregon was a dream come true for many travelers. ose who made the journey successfully were part of the future success of Ontario, as well.

In 1883, the Oregon Short Line Railroad completed tracks through the Ontario area. A depot and inn were developed, which led to increased settlement in the area. Ontario began as a cattle town and the railroad was a central component of this industry. is is true even today, as the area is home to a variety of agricultural-based businesses.

Situated at the northeastern tip of Malheur County, Ontario is the largest city within the county and shows no signs of slowing its growth. roughout the various 20th century improvements, such as man-made reservoirs, have positively affected the growth of business and industry in the area. Additionally, Ontario is home to people with a rich variety of ethnic backgrounds. True to the spirit of the first Oregon Trail pioneers, residents who call Ontario home are a part of both past and future.

Location & Transportation

O

ntario is located in eastern Oregon, near the Idaho-Oregon border. e largest city in Malheur County, Ontario continues to grow in large part because of its easily accessible location.

Ontario is conveniently located at the center of four major highways: Interstate 84, U.S. Highway 95, U.S. Highway 20-26 and U.S. Highway 201.

Follow Interstate 84 to the southeast for about an hour and discover Boise.

To the northwest, a drive of approximately six hours along Interstate 84 will take travelers to Portland. e highways provide access to Nevada and California to the south, Idaho to the east, Washington to the north and Oregon’s coast to the west.

Ontario Municipal Airport provides a 5,000-foot runway to accommodate light general aviation aircra to business jet aircra. A fixed base operator is on the field with aircra fuel and there is also an aircra maintenance business. Boise Air Terminal/Gowen Field Airport, a major commercial airport, is a quick hour drive to the southeast. Greyhound provides local bus services. Additionally, the area is served by the Union Pacific Railroad, which passes right through town with a stop in nearby Nyssa.

ntario is home to over 1,000 retail- and servicebased businesses, and is committed to supporting and developing both small and large businesses.

Other development projects are in the works, and there is every indication that growth and prosperity will continue to define business and industry in the area. ere are six major employers in Ontario who employ over 2,500 individuals. Business and industry thrives throughout Malheur County. Government offices alone provide jobs for just over 2,600 people. Other major employers reside outside of Ontario but within Malheur County lines. Small businesses will find information and resources at Treasure Valley Community College’s Small Business Development Center.

SRCI is a multi-custody prison in Ontario that houses approximately 3,000 male inmates. SRCI has multiple special housing units including Disciplinary Segregation, Intensive Management, Infirmary (with hospice) with 24-hour nursing care, and an Administrative Segregation Unit. SRCI participates in prison industries with Oregon Corrections Enterprises including a call center, laundry, and sign shop. SRCI focuses on incentive housing, specialized housing, inmates with mental health/medical vulnerabilities, education and trades programs, cognitive and parenting programs, and institution work programs. SRCI opened in 1991 and is the largest correctional institution in the state.

Agribusiness Rich, fertile land is the foundation of all that lies within Malheur County. e agricultural industry continues to be the economic base for the area. Cattle are the main livestock and crops include onions, potatoes, beets and a variety of grains. A mild climate and rich soil provide the means for prosperous farms and ranches.

MAJOR AGRICULTURAL INDUSTRIES: Beef Cattle Beef is the number one agricultural product in Malheur County. Cattle ranches can be found throughout the area with many able to trace their beginnings back to the 1800s.

Onions Onions are the second-ranked agricultural product in the county. Migrant workers are largely responsible for the weeding and harvesting of more than five percent of the national onion market right in Malheur County. Every August and September, observers can witness the annual ritual of onion curing by driving down county roads.

Potatoes Found in practically every restaurant and kitchen, potatoes are the cornerstone for many meals and recipes. In Malheur County, large russet potatoes are the third-largest cash crop.

In addition to the top three industries already mentioned, many other products are grown and produced within the county lines. Ontario has its own newspaper and radio station.

T

he Argus Observer is a direct descendent of e Advocate, which was established Jan. 6, 1897 in Vale as a weekly newspaper published each Wednesday. e Advocate was moved from Vale to Ontario in 1899 when the name changed to e Ontario Argus. e Eastern Oregon Observer was founded in 1936 and operated for 11 years before consolidating with e Ontario Argus.

Subscriptions lists for both papers were consolidated, and the name of the publication was changed to e Ontario Argus Observer, ultimately becoming e Daily Argus Observer.

In 1968, Wick Communications Co. purchased e Daily Argus Observer and remains owners of the newspaper to this day. John Dillon became the publisher in 2009 and is still today. e Daily Argus Observer is a daily newspaper published aernoons Tuesday through Friday and Sunday mornings, serving the western Treasure Valley. e Argus Observer reaches a market in eastern Oregon and southwest Idaho consisting of Malhuer, Harney and Baker counties in Oregon, as well as Payette, Washington and Adams counties in Idaho.

“Hello Ontario, Hello Weiser, Hello Vale, Hello Nyssa, New Plymouth, Fruitland and Hello Payette” – those were some of the first words heard on KSRV 1380 am on November 23, 1946 at 11:00 a.m., and the beginning of the voice of the Snake River Valley. Since that time, KSRV has been broadcasting in eastern Oregon and southwestern Treasure Valley. KSRV has always

been the local outlet for businesses to advertise their goods and services. KSRV maintains that motto still to this day. Proud to serve the local businesses is their belief. Even though the format has changed with the times, the heart of the station has always been to “be the local connection to the listeners and businesses.”

Not only being an advertising media for businesses, KSRV also provides local programming like news broadcasts, high school and college sports, agricultural news to keep the farmers and ranchers informed of current news and commodity prices. In the beginning, KSRV was owned by a group from the area. Today KSRV is one of 12 stations owned by FM Idaho Co., LLC out of Twin Falls. KSRV is proud to be one of the media partners in the area and proud to help the local businesses be successful.

Heartland Regional Radio Heartland Regional Radio, "Regional Radio at its Best," is the newest radio station to focus on Eastern Oregon and Southwest Idaho. Heartland Regional Radio is also the newest concept in radio stations, being a full-service internet radio station.

Heartland Regional Radio features local news, sports, weather, and local events. One feature of the radio station is that it has multiple music formats to choose from. Advertisers have the opportunity to promote their business, products and services locally and to the world via the internet. Locally owned and operated by radio veteran Dale Jeffries and his wife Dana, they recognized that a good local radio station featuring the many local aspects of the area is needed. Internet radio is new to the area and becoming increasingly popular for radio listeners.

he Four Rivers Cultural Center and Museum is at the center of Ontario’s cultural offerings. Celebrating the convergence of the area’s four rivers (Snake, Malheur, Owyhee and Payette) and the people who settled the area. e center offers a variety of programs and events throughout the year.

Visit the museum to learn about the history of the Japanese Americans, Basques, Hispanics, Northern Paiute and Europeans who settled here throughout the past 100 years.
