Community Introduction he City of Palo Alto is more than 100 years old and named after a majestic 1,000-yearold coastal redwood tree where early Spanish explorers camped. A charming mixture of old and new, Palo Alto’s tree-lined streets and historic buildings reflect its California heritage. Getting Around alo Alto and Stanford are served by a transportation network that includes the regional Caltrain system, which operates frequent trains up and down the Peninsula between San Francisco and San Jose, the free Stanford Marguerite shuttle bus service, local taxis and an extensive network of pedestrian and bike paths. While most visitors arrive by car, it is feasible to land at either San Francisco

or San Jose airports, connect to nearby Caltrain stations in Millbrae and Santa Clara (via BART at SFO and shuttle bus at San Jose) and arrive at the downtown Palo Alto train station. From there, the Marguerite Shuttle provides service to various locations on the Stanford campus and to selected other stops in Palo Alto. The Sheraton and Westin hotels are both located next to the train station. Airport van shuttle services regularly operate from both airports to Palo Alto and Stanford.◗

Lodging arking in most downtown Palo Alto lots is free for two hours (and parking garages for three hours) during weekdays and Saturdays, after which a car is not allowed to re-park in the same “color zone” the rest of the day. It can be very difficult to find parking in the evening, especially on Friday and Saturday nights. A number of the better restaurants offer valet parking and daytime permit – only garages become available after 6 pm. Palo Alto offers accommodations for just about every traveler, from the luxurious Garden Court Hotel in downtown Palo Alto to the quaint Hotel California to the Cowper Inn bed and breakfast. Most hotels and motels are situated along busy El Camino Real, which bisects the city roughly north/south and separates the Stanford campus from Palo Alto. The Epiphany, the Garden Court Hotel, Hotel Keen and the Cardinal are located in the heart of downtown Palo Alto, and the

Sheraton and Westin are close by. The closest hotels to Stanford (all right on the edge of campus) are the Sheraton, Westin and Stanford Terrace Inn. All hotels and motels are within a short walk of restaurants and other essential needs, and all are within a five or 10 minute drive of the Stanford campus. Except for major Stanford weekend events (graduation, football games, admit or reunion weekends, etc.) hotel occupancy is very high on weekdays due to business travelers and generally lower on weekends, when most hotels offer discounted rates.◗

Eating & Nightlife alo Alto is home to some of the best restaurants in the Bay Area, in many cases rivaling the best restaurants in San Francisco. It is a favorite dinner spot for locals living throughout Silicon Valley and visiting tourists and business people from around the world. Most of the best restaurants are relatively small and independent. Without reservations, you can expect to wait up to an hour or longer, especially on weekends, during early evening hours. Restaurants are the focal point for nightlife in Palo Alto. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not uncommon for them to still be seating customers at 10 or 11 p.m. on weekends. A popular bar scene consisting of mostly young professionals and some Stanford students keeps downtown Palo Alto going until after 1 a.m. A few restaurants and bars feature live music or DJs.
