Letter from the President Welcome, Having grown up in Pewaukee and working with the family business when I was young, I was always interested in the development of Pewaukee. The first settlers were attracted here by the natural resources of the area, including the lake, lumber, limestone and ability to make a living off the land. Bartering for goods was common practice among the settlers and the Indians living in the area. The settlers built sawmills and grist mills, harvested ice for the nearby meat and brewing industries, built kilns to make lime used for construction, and farmed the land. As the area grew, Pewaukee became a resort destination for the Milwaukee and Chicago upper class. Hotels and summer cottages sprung up around the lake. Hardware stores, taverns, meat markets, bakeries, banks, churches and other businesses served the new and increasing needs of the population. As time passed, businesses had to change due to the decreasing natural resources. Lumber and limestone supplies dwindled. Modern refrigeration eliminated the need for lake ice. Cottages became permanent residences. The impact of the World Wars and the Depression

created challenges and opportunities for new businesses. More people chose to live in Pewaukee permanently. Previous luxuries like cars, radios and televisions became necessities. Businesses reacted to meet new demands from the growing economy. Increasing technology and large-scale efficiencies required faster adaptation to survive. Now competition is global and internet driven. But, the opportunities are also unlimited if you are fast enough and knowledgeable enough to take advantage of it. Using the resources of the Pewaukee Chamber of Commerce can be an advantage for businesses and consumers alike. The Chamber, like any business, needs to change to keep up with the needs of the community. With a mission of growing business, education, and advocacy for our members, we adjusted our strategies to help keep up with the times and the needs of our members. The lake and tourism remain as constants over the years. Business Week ranked Pewaukee as the best affordable suburb in the U.S. in 2009. Local businesses can increase their ability to learn, grow their business, and become partners in the community through the Chamber of Commerce. Even with the increased growth and change, Pewaukee still has a distinctive community spirit. That spirit has driven businesses and residents alike to become what it is today. The Chamber recognizes this through an Annual Awards Gala for citizens and businesses who have contributed to the advancement of the community. Supporting or joining the Chamber helps to keep that community spirit alive and growing in what is sure to be a continued rapid pace of change in the future. The Chamber welcomes your participation! History ewaukee is a town that has literally been built from the ground up. Before settlers even stepped foot on the land, Pee-wauk-kee-win-ick, or Sakaegan as respective tribes called it, Native Americans lived on the land, hunting and gathering uninterrupted. Sometimes a “white man” would show up to trade but it wasn’t until 1837 when Deacon Asa Clark arrived to build a mill, at what is now known as Pewaukee Lake.

P

Company. The company shares were sold for $15 each and soon every business and home could own one. The 1900s brought on a slew of changes, from the growing school district to World War II the town grew and grew, but still retained its historical charm. Today, 137 years later, Pewaukee remembers those who have created this town and those that live in it today. Pewaukee is a place like very few others. Words such as unique, historic and quaint have been used to describe this area. Pewaukee has a great sense of community pride, throughout residents as well as the business community. Different events, a lake, shopping and dining make Pewaukee a great place to relax and a great home for any business. Everything is Waiting for You!

Forty years after that first settler created a business and a home on the lake, the growing community decided to take procedures to be officially classified as an unincorporated village. Nine interested community citizens, whose efforts had helped advance the community’s growth and prosperity, made the application. On April 3, 1876, Judge David Small of the Circuit Court of Waukesha County granted the application and the village of Pewaukee, a shortened name from the previous Indian residents, was born with a population of 578. In 1893, The Colombian Exposition in Chicago provided marvels of the future, like electricity. With so much innovation and excitement close to Pewaukee it started to work its way up to the village, creating the Pewaukee-Sussex Telephone

Arts & Entertainment Pewaukee Area Arts Council (PAAC) by Liz Rhodebeck

he Pewaukee Area Arts Council (PAAC) is a nonprofit organization that seeks to bring the arts into closer relationship with the Lake Country community. Believing that the arts are for everyone, its mission is “to encourage and promote quality arts experiences, programs, events, and cultural opportunities” for the area.

T

Founded in 2004, PAAC meets the second Monday of every month (except July and August) at 5:30 p.m. in the Pewaukee Public Library. Each month they welcome a guest speaker including artists, writers, dancers, poets, musicians, quilters, teachers, vocalists, designers and others who bring creativity to our lives. Members also enjoy sharing news about their accomplishments and networking with others who love the arts. Meetings are open to the public. PAAC has collaborated with other community organizations such as Positively Pewaukee, Oconomowoc Arts Center, Pewaukee Park & Recreation, and the Delafield Arts Center to bring arts programs to the community. In the last two years, PAAC has expanded its support of students by awarding scholarships to promising high school artists.

Some recent and upcoming projects of PAAC are: d Wall Mural The 2012 Art in the Downtown project was a wall mural painted by middle school students enrolled in the Pewaukee Park & Recreation Department’s Jr. Leader Prep camp program. PAAC provided artistic guidance in creating the mural and partial funding for supplies. Positively Pewaukee also collaborated on this project. The mural is on display at Robert Lynch dental office right next to Village Hall, where it can be seen by those driving into Pewaukee.

d Antique & Classic Boat Show and Waterfront Art Fair PAAC has partnered with the Glacier Lakes Chapter since 2008 for the “Antique & Classic Boat Show and Waterfront Art Fair” held this year on August 18, at Lakefront Park on Pewaukee Lake. In addition to the boat exhibit, the event features PAAC sponsored plein air (open air) competition with artists painting on site, a raffle, and silent auction of the freshly painted plein air artwork.

d Showcase of Art

d Community events

The PAAC Showcase of Art is a non-competitive biennial exhibition of works of visual art created by emerging artists in Waukesha County public and private high schools, colleges and home-schools. Held at Steinhafels Education Center in Waukesha, the shows are scheduled in mid-April. The Showcase features awards, a Gallery of Masters spotlighting the talents of high school and college art teachers, door prizes, a raffle, artists at work demonstrating talents, an exhibit of PAAC member artwork, and musical and dance performances by local youth.

PAAC regularly participates in community events such as Waterfront Wednesdays, Art in the Park, Fall Fun Fest, and the Pewaukee Holiday Festival, bringing hands-on art experiences for children and adults.

d Spring Bling! Fashion Show PAAC’s major fundraiser, the Spring Bling! is a fashion show and luncheon held at the Country Springs Hotel and Convention Center in Pewaukee in early spring. The event features a live purse auction, fashion show, lunch, raffle, and local celebrity models and emcee.

d Past projects: e “Clay Stomp®.” community wall mural in the Pewaukee Public Library e CommUnity Weaving, traveling art project, on display at the library e Get Benched! artistic painted benches in downtown Pewaukee e Banner Up! original artwork banners on light posts downtown e One Vision: A Fusion of Art & Poetry, show and exhibit at Oconomowoc Arts Center e Members Exhibit at Delafield Arts Center Website: www.pewaukeearts.org
