istorically, the Pomona area was situated along a trade route used by Native Americans, and was established by Europeans as part of a Mexican land grant in 1837. Transition to the United States followed, in which the grants were honored, but drought and taxation forced the rancho owners to foreclose; by 1870, the town, called Spadra, was owned by Louis Phillips. Up to this time cattle ranching was the primary local economic base, but in 1875 the Santa Fe Railroad laid track through the valley and Pomona, the Roman “Goddess of Fruit” was born. Incorporation came in 1888, and the economy was well on its way toward becoming citrus-based. Pomona was the spot of many technological firsts, including long distance transmissions of electricity, use of alternating current, and

direct distance dialing — all of which had their beginnings in Pomona. Today, the City of Pomona leads the Pomona Valley in high-tech research and development. Progressive citizens and government leaders continue to work together to provide a business-friendly environment. d

he gateway to the West Coast, Pomona not only offers direct access to five major Southern California freeways — Interstates 10 and 210, and the 57, 60 and 71 Freeways — it’s also strategically located on the eastern edge of Los Angeles County. omona’s wide range of recreational options stretches from drag races to sport fishing to historic home tours. Pomona is home to 23 public parks, four community centers, and more than 2,000 recreational acres used for fishing, hiking, biking, and other activities. Two municipal golf courses are located in the area, and many others are within a short driving distance. The Mount Baldy Ski Area features four double lifts and an elevation of 8,600 feet. Water parks and recreational vehicle parks offer a variety of fun events and amenities. Ganesha Park is a 60-acre preserve of rolling hills and recreational facilities. Amenities at Ganesha Park include picnic areas, a children’s play area, tennis courts, a swimming pool complex, and community center. At Pomona’s oldest park, residents can enjoy stunning 120year old eucalyptus trees and a 250-tree Redwood grove—the only one of its kind in Southern California. Frank G. Bonelli Regional Park offers camping, hiking, fishing, picnicking, and horseback riding amenities. The San Bernardino National Forest is one of California’s largest parks. Residents can camp and picnic in this park, and enjoy activities such as hunting, fishing, and swimming. Prado Park offers camping facilities and a 60-acre lake stocked with catfish and trout. Fairplex in Pomona hosts more than 3 million guests each year at a variety of trade, consumer and exposition events including automotive shows, computer fairs, arts and crafts shows and ethnic

festivals. The largest of these events is the self-produced L.A. County Fair held each year since 1922. The 18-day Fair, held each September, attracts more than 1.4 million guests from all over the world and includes favorite activities such as the famous FairView Farms agriculture and livestock exhibit, the Millard Sheets Gallery, fine and home arts exhibits, the spectacular Flower & Garden Pavilion, carnival rides, shopping, great food and live entertainment. The Arabian Horse Center at Cal Poly Pomona continues the tradition of horse shows begun by cereal magnate W. K. Kellogg. Arabian purebreds trained and handled by Pomona staff and students are shown monthly. More than 200 City-sponsored recreational programs are offered throughout the year, including dancing, bridge, and youth soccer. Residents enjoy seasonal events, such as the Christmas Parade and Fourth of July KABOOM. Nearby points of interest such as Knott’s Berry Farm and Laguna Beach are favorite destinations for Pomona residents. Activities and entertainment are offered at both the “Passport to Pomona” and “Second Saturday” events held monthly throughout the Arts Colony in downtown Pomona. San Antonio College offer Performing Arts Centers with high quality dramatic productions. he Pomona Arts Colony is a cluster of shops, galleries and other spaces devoted to art in all of its visual and musical forms. What began as a few small spaces clustered around 2nd and Main streets in Downtown Pomona, now sprawls across three blocks, encompassing large galleries and smaller spaces. Pomona draws its inspirations from a number of sources, amongst them the old Fox Theatre, once the showplace for first-run movies during the 1930s-1950s. The City manages to combine old-world drama with modern urban flair. The Arts Colony itself is distinguished by its bright colors and young feel, and of course, by the art. The Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum is housed in a 28,500square-foot building on the edge of the historic Los Angeles County Fairplex. The museum features an impressive array of vintage and historical racing vehicles, along with photographs, trophies, helmets and driving uniforms, artifacts, paintings, and other memorabilia chronicling more than 50 years of American motorsports. The L.A. County Fair at Pomona’s Fairplex is rated number 4 of the top 50 fairs and festivals in North America. The L.A. County Fair greets more than 1.3 million guests to annual event for 18 days each September. The L.A. County Fair remains one of the most consistent and strongest family entertainment values in Southern California, offering shopping, education, entertainment, exhibits, flower and garden pavilion, an art gallery, children’s programming, carnival rides, food and fun. d

POMONA VALLEY HOSPITAL MEDICAL CENTER he 453-bed acute care Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center (www.pvhmc.org) is nationally recognized as a 100 Top Hospital and as a HealthGrades 2009 Outstanding Patient Experience award recipient. The not-for-profit teaching hospital serves eastern Los Angeles and western San Bernardino counties. In addition to its national designation, PVHMC is also recognized throughout the state and the region for outstanding medical care and the efficient use of resources.

CASA COLINA CENTERS FOR REHABILITATION Casa Colina Hospital (www.casacolina.org) is a fully licensed and accredited acute-care hospital that provides medical rehabilitation services. The hospital has special facilities for physical restoration — such as a therapeutic swimming pool, rehabilitation gym, adapted fitness center and state-of-the-art therapy equipment. With specialized caregivers and support staff, Casa Colina serves children and adults who have been disabled by injuries, chronic disorders and illnesses. The hospital also has a sub-acute rehabilitation unit and outpatient clinics, and provides case management and patient/family support services. Founded in 1902, PVHMC is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. he City of Pomona was incorporated in January of 1888 and has a Council/City Manager form of government. The City Council is made up of individuals representing six districts and the mayor. The City Council, comprised of the elected representatives of the City of Pomona, provides legislative and policy leadership, ensuring the efficient and cost-effective implementation of City mission and goals. The six council members are elected by district and serve four-year terms. The Mayor is elected at large and serves as the presiding officer of the City Council and the official head of City government. The City Council appoints the City Manager,

One-hundred eighty one sworn officers and 150 civilian personnel comprise the Pomona Police Department. A community-oriented policing philosophy translates into a wide range of programs for Pomona residents. Neighborhood reclamation and revitalization programs, bicycle/pedestrian safety, substance abuse education, and neighborhood substations are among the many exceptional police department programs. Overall crime in Pomona has shown a steady decline since 1993, including a 44% decline over the past decade.
