he towns of Wallingford and North Haven in the county of New Haven have enjoyed a long history in this region of the country.The Town of North Haven was once a part of the City of New Haven. During the years that New Haven was growing and increasing in population, tracts of the land it covered were being divided up.Three of these tracts had developed to a point where it seemed logical to designate it as its own entity. On October 19, 1786 the Town of North Haven was officially named.

The town grew further still, following the passing of Reverend James Pierpont. In his will he donated the property he owned with specifications as to what the land should be used for. He requested that a burying ground, market place, meetinghouse and training ground all be constructed.These additions would foster the town’s business and residential gains.

North Haven citizen Theophilus Eaton discovered clay deposits on this property on the west side of the Quinnipiac River.This groundbreaking discovery led to the construction of the very first brickyard in North America and established brick production as a major industry that continue into the 20th century.

The Town of Wallingford’s first days date back to the 1660s. Planning for this municipality began when the Connecticut General Assembly gave the go-ahead to begin construction on the East River. What is now known as Main Street was once called the “long highway” and was crucial to the development of the town in its earlier years.

Just three years after construction began, over 125 residents took up living in temporary housing and within five years, 40 houses were up along Main Street upon six-acre lots.

The 19th century brought much industry and commerce to Main Street with the appearance of a tannery and grain mill. Manufacturers were turning out shoes and boots, matches, paper boxes, razor straps, pewter pots and beaver hats. Other smaller shops and businesses popped up along Main Street.

The town played a role in the history of the entire country during times of war and unrest.

Over 450 residents of Wallingford came together and collected a supply of food and other goods to present to the army soldiers fighting the Revolutionary War. George Washington made two appearances in Wallingford in the 1700s. A local resident of Wallingford, Lyman Hall, was one of the influential men who signed the Declaration of Independence.

In 2007, North Haven held 9,167 existing homes, which accounted for nearly 90 percent of all residences in the area. New construction permits amounted to 16 and 240 home sales occurred.

In Wallingford, 68.2 percent of all housing was comprised of existing homes, with a total of 18,184 dwellings. Approximately 141 new construction permits were granted and 381 homes were sold.

The Wallingford school system is comprised of eight elementary schools teaching grades kindergarten through fifth. Students attending grades sixth through eighth attend one of two middle schools. Grades nine through 12 are held at two high schools.The enrollment of all of these schools, including the prekindergarten program, surpasses 7,000 students.The Adult Education program provided by the Wallingford Board of Education encompasses a number of different programs in which adult students can earn diplomas and additional training. In North Haven, the unemployment rate in August 2008 was 6.2 percent while Wallingford totaled 5.9 percent.The county came in a bit higher at 6.8 percent and the state ranked at 6.5 percent.

Comparatively, the national rate for the month of August 2008 was 6.1 percent.The towns of Wallingford and North Haven fell closer to the national rate than did the county and state.
