ichfield was incorporated as a village in 1908 and was once referred to as “Richland.” The city has deep roots and is fortunate to have several outstanding examples of early homes still well maintained and in solid structural shape. A History Center is housed on the grounds of the Riley Bartholomew House Museum and serves as the focal point for Richfield history, encompassing its 150 years.
R
We are a first-ring suburb located immediately south of Minneapolis and directly west of the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. The city’s population is around 35,000 and fits within seven square miles. The median resident age is 36 and the estimated median household income is around $53,000. The community is demographically diverse, as close to 12 percent of Richfield residents are foreign born.
4
The Suburban Community With a Small-Town Heart
Richfield remains a highly desirable place for families and businesses to plant their roots. In 1955, Look magazine named Richfield an “All-American City.” In 2008, Richfield was named by CNNMoney.com as one of 100 America’s best small cities in which to live. People call Richfield home because the neighborhoods are clean; the city government is responsive; the community schools are diverse, extremely safe and have high standards; and the community spirit is high. We hope this spirit and uniqueness as a “suburban community with a small-town heart” comes through as you read this guide.

ichfield offers housing choices for everyone. Single-family homes (about 70 percent of our housing) are in an affordable price range. Townhomes, apartments, high-rise condominiums, senior citizen-only residences and assisted-living complexes are located throughout the city.
R
Housing Under the direction of the Housing and Redevelopment Authority (HRA), Richfield has constructed more than 125 homes in recent years to replace small homes built in the pre-World War II era. They also oversee an apartment renovation program designed to keep the apartments desirable and upto-date. The City of Richfield requires that all homes pass a maintenance code inspection before they are sold. This program, which began more than 15 years ago, is a major influence in keeping Richfield on the cutting edge of well-maintained suburbs.

What once offered a fleeting chance at a collegiate scholarship and a trip to the “Red Barn” — Olympia Stadium, where the NHL Detroit Red Wings played their home games — the NAHL has evolved into a proven pathway for young adults between the ages of 16-20 to develop into outstanding collegiate and professional players while playing in some the nation's state-of-the art facilities.
R
The City of Richfield boasts 450 acres of park land over 23 different parks, a nature preserve, more than 11 miles of walking paths, playgrounds, a two-sheet ice arena (home to the NAHL Minnesota Magicians junior hockey team), outdoor ice rinks, an outdoor swimming pool with two waterslides, a skate park and tennis courts. In addition, the city offers an art center, community center, community gardens, miniature golf course, tennis courts, softball fields and two farmers’ markets! Wood Lake Nature Center has over two miles of crushed limestone walking trails, floating boardwalk and groomed cross-country ski trails (weather-permitting). The trails wind through three different habitats: cattail marsh, mixed lowland forest and restored prairie. Veterans Memorial Park is yet another gem in Richfield and home to the Honoring All Veterans Memorial. This community park offers amenities such as a huge picnic shelter, open-air tables, playground equipment and a miniature golf course. The park is also a center point for the city’s Fourth of July celebration. Dedicated in 2008, the “Honoring All Veterans Memorial” is a memorial to current and honorably discharged U.S. veterans. It is funded by the sale of engraved names on granite tablets that face a bronze statue of one of the first flag-raisers at Iwo Jima, longtime Richfield resident Charles Lindberg. Each granite tablet has the names of 120 veterans. Cpl. Lindberg, along with four other Marines, raised the first flag on February 23, 1945. The other Marines were Lt. Harold Schrier, Platoon Sgt. Ernest Thomas, Sgt. Hank Hansen and Pvt. Louis Charlo. Although we spotlight these individuals, we acknowledge members of all six branches of service: Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines, Merchant Marines and Navy.
Richfield is home to the Minnesota Magicians junior hockey team; the team plays out of Richfield Ice Arena — a two-sheet facility with seating for 1,800 in the main arena. Team ownership chose Richfield due to its centralized location — there are over 70 area high schools from which potential players can be scouted. The team’s strategic location in Richfield will also help the NAHL continue the growth of their central footprint and will open up more opportunity and exposure to NCAA and professional scouts. What is Junior Hockey? Celebrating its 38th season in 2013-14, the North American Hockey League (NAHL) is the oldest and largest USA Hockey-sanctioned Junior A circuit with 24 teams representing some of the nation's emerging hockey markets as well as traditional hot beds in 11 states.

Open Streets at Penn Fest Since 2007, the Penn Central neighborhood group has hosted Richfield's Penn Fest, which is an “Open Streets” event held on a Saturday afternoon in the fall. It is a chance for businesses and people who live in the Penn Central neighborhood to interact, which creates a sense of community and neighborhood identity. During Penn Fest, Penn Avenue is closed from 63rd to 76th Streets courtesy of an Open Streets grant from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota. In addition to the music, free food and store sales that have always been part of the celebration, the grant allows Penn Fest to include an emphasis on health by including a 5K run, a mini-farmers' market and fitness classes. n Richfield, some of the congregations and their houses of worship have existed for more than 150 years, while others are fairly new, representing the changing culture of our area. Several of our more than 20 congregations share their buildings with ethnic groups or have separate nonEnglish language services — a reflection of a community that is friendly and welcoming. Whatever your religious preference, you are sure to find a place of worship nearby.
