MultiAd recycles all paper and aluminum in the print production area, as well as all fluorescent light bulbs. We also use vegetable oil based inks, low VOC solvents and alcohol free fountain solutions in the press room. Through October 2010, MultiAd has recycled 860,467 pounds of paper which translates to saving: 7,314 trees, 3,011,610 gallons of water, 163,487 gallons of oil, 1,291 cubic yards of landfill space, 1,720,920 kilowatt hours and 25,814 pounds of air pollutants. We also recycled 21.5 tons of aluminum plates.

e have just begun a new year and optimism is very high in the River Parishes. Last year was a very trying time as we dealt with a very slow economy, a major oil spill and severe cuts in the state budget. All of this was handled by you with your usual enthusiasm, and your Chamber was always there as your unified voice addressing these concerns. As your Chairman, I expect this year to be an outstanding year as we have assembled a dynamic group of committee chairs committed to improving the economy of the River Parishes and addressing your needs. Public Policy will be focusing on federal as well as state and local legislative issues to improve the business climate in the River Region. Business Development will be working with the parishes’ economic development offices in their quest to help existing businesses grow, as well as attract new businesses. Membership Committee will be concentrating on “customer satisfaction.” Events Committee is planning several quality events during the year that meet your needs for networking, education, socializing and just having fun. COMMUNITY
INTRODUCTION
T
he River Region is comprised of three Louisiana parishes—St. James, St. John the Baptist and St. Charles—which are each cut in half horizontally by the Mississippi River and are surrounded by Lake Maurepas, Lake Pontchartrain, Lake Cataouatche, Lake Salvador and Lac Des Allemands. With a combined land area of approximately 749 square miles and a total population of 119,751, this vast area is filled with opportunities for outdoor recreation, solid business ventures and plenty to do for locals and visitors alike.
S T. J A M E S St. James Parish is strategically located midway between the metro epicenters of Baton Rouge and New Orleans. Its population is 22,102 (a total of a four percent increase from 21,216 in 2000)—the smallest of the three parishes in terms of population and population density, but in land measurements, it is the second largest of the parishes at 246 square miles. Over half of the parish is covered by wetlands; despite this, the parish is home to two incorporated towns, Lutcher and Gramercy, but the vast majority of the parish’s population lives in the unincorporated communities of Convent (the parish seat), Vacherie, Romeville, Paulina, Hester, Welcome, St. James and Union. St. James’s climate is subtropical; winter temperatures rarely reach below an average of 60 degrees Fahrenheit, with snow and ice extremely rare.
S T. J O H N T H E B A P T I S T St. John the Baptist Parish, only 25 minutes west of New Orleans, is in the heart of Louisiana’s sugarcane industry between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. The parish is 219 square miles and has a population of 49,800, which is the second largest of the River Parishes in population. St. John the Baptist Parish consists of Edgard, Wallace, Lucy, Mt. Airy, Garyville, Reserve and LaPlace. There are no incorporated towns in St. John the Baptist Parish. The climate is subtropical with precipitation levels at approximately 54 inches per year.

S T. C H A R L E S St. Charles Parish is approximately 25 miles west of the City of New Orleans and stands as one of the nine parishes that make up the Metropolitan New Orleans Area. The parish has the largest population of the three River Region Parishes at 52,780 and the largest square mileage at 284 square miles. The towns that are found within the parish include Ama, Bayou Gauche, Boutte, Des Allemands, Hahnville, Killona, Luling, Montz, New Sarpy, Norco, Paradis, St. Rose, Taft and Destrehan. St. Charles’s climate more closely resembles the traditional four-season climate with noticeable fall and spring climate changes, but snow and ice are still extremely rare.

HISTORY
T
he parishes of St. James, St. John the Baptist and St. Charles, as well as the State of Louisiana itself, have quite a unique story behind their creations. According to historic records, one of the first Europeans to arrive in this area was Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto sometime in the early 1540s. Later, the region was claimed by French adventurer Sieru de la Salle, naming it “Louisiana” in honor of then-reigning French King Louis XIV. The land changed hands, from France to Spain, in 1762. At the same time, the area welcomed the first Acadian exiles (descendents of 17th century French colonists who were forced out of the current-day Canadian provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island). Rule of the territory continued to bounce between Spain, France and Britain, and was officially returned to France by Spain in 1800 through the secret Treaty of San Ildefonso. In 1803, the United States purchased the territory of Louisiana from Napolean for $15 million, and, by 1807, established 12 counties – which would later be divided

into 19 original parishes, including St. James, St. John the Baptist and St. Charles Parishes. Louisiana was granted statehood in 1812. The three River Region Parishes were around long before their official creation. St. James made up a portion of the “Comte’ d’Acadie” (County of Acadia), which included the old ecclesiastical parishes of St. James and “The Ascension” – also referred to as the First and Second Acadian Coasts. St. John the Baptist and St. Charles Parishes were originally part of the area once known as “La Cote des Allemands” (The German Coast), which was settled by German pioneers in the early 1720s. The two parishes share a very similar history as a result of the fusion of German and French cultures in the region early on in their settlement. Local history and the unique culture that has arisen from that history is celebrated regularly at various annual festivals throughout the River Region. Several wellpreserved plantations also remain standing, inviting guests to tour the grounds and immerse themselves in the rich past of this distinct southeast Louisiana region.

TRANSPORTATION

kipping around from parish to parish or even leaving the state is easy in the River Region. A number of interstates provide efficient transportation in and around the parishes, including I-10, I-55 and I-310. State Highways 44, 18, 3125 and 3127 also service the region, as well as U.S. Highways 51, 61 and 90, and Louisiana Highway 48. For air travel, passengers can seek flights from the New Orleans International Airport, or for corporate/private aviation, St. John Parish General Aviation Airport. A number of freight rails service the area, and the Reserve/Edgard Ferry carries passengers across the Mississippi River, making nothing out of reach in this southeastern section of Louisiana.

he River Region is rife with outdoor recreational activities for its residents and visitors. Organized sports, physical fitness, fishing and boating are just some of the many activities accented upon and made available in the River Region.
Because St. James Parish is comprised of 50 percent wetlands, some of the region’s best fishing can be done here. There are also boat launches located on the Blind River, Bayou Chevreuil and both banks of the Mississippi River. St. James also operates eight recreational facilities throughout the parish, offering organized baseball, soccer, football, tennis and basketball, as well as a fitness center on the East Bank. St. John the Baptist Parish offers extensive fishing as well as a youth (5–12 years old) baseball league through the Parks and Recreation Department. The area is also home to 11 parks, including Wallace Bridge Park, Harold Scott Roussell Park, Belle Point and Greenwood Park, among others, each conveniently located nearby the great Mississippi River. Register for the youth league or peruse the area’s fishing and park maps at www.sjbparish.com. St. Charles Parish, too, offers fishing, both freshwater and saltwater. Lake Des Allemands invites fishers, jet skiers and boaters alike, and Lakes Salvador and Pontchartrain offer a sort of “one stop shop” for both freshwater and saltwater fishing. The public boat launches of East Guide Levee Launch and Bonnet Carré Spillway in Norco, Hahnville Boat Launch and Des Allemands Boat Launch can be accessed as well. he River Region features an active arts and entertainment community that is bursting with authentic culture and excitement. From swamp excursions and tours of historic Antebellum plantations to unique community events, entertainment is around every corner.
For the theatre enthusiast, plan a night out at St. John Theatre in Reserve. Originally built in 1918, the Liberty Theater was the movie palace of St. John Parish. After being destroyed by fire, it was rebuilt as Maurin's Theater by Louis J. Maurin, Sr. The admission of 25 cents is still remembered and many fond stories are recounted by local residents. The last movie was shown in 1979, but the building did not remain dark for long. In 1981, St. John the Baptist Parish purchased the building from the Maurin family. Jack S. Snowdy led a group known as the St. John Community Theatre that introduced live community theater to the River Parishes. Thirty-one years later, the vision of both Mr. Maurin and Mr. Snowdy continues as St. John Theatre is proud to produce quality, family entertainment. St. John Theatre is a short 30-minute drive from New Orleans or Baton Rouge, and offers vendors a beautiful venue with outstanding lighting and sound systems. Several local high schools, as well as dance studios call it home for their yearly productions. Come out to see the talent that is St. John Theatre!

he River Region Parishes have a number of healthcare options at their fingertips, ensuring that overall wellness in the parishes is key. With several medical facilities located within the three individual parishes, doctors and medical facilities are always just minutes from home when you need them most. River Parishes Hospital, located in LaPlace, is the largest hospital in the area at 106 beds. The facility is accredited by the Joint Commission and serves over 120,000 residents in the St. Charles, St. John the Baptist and St. James Parishes. The hospital specializes in cardiology, gastroenterology, neonatology, orthopedics, oncology and more. Over 140 healthcare professionals are employed by the facility, and this team of physicians is well recognized—all River Parishes Hospital physicians

are either board-certified or board-eligible, and each has completed extensive training in his or her specialty areas. The hospital also boasts a Level II Nursery and a Level III Trauma Center. St. James Parish Hospital, another local medical facility, is a 47-bed, non-profit, acute care facility located in Lutcher. In operation since 1955, the hospital boasts that it is “large enough to serve, small enough to care.” It has recently undergone renovation with its patients’ health care needs in mind. With a new expanded campus, physicians can more easily and more quickly serve patients when they need care the most. St. Charles Parish Hospital, a 59-bed, acute care facility located in Luling, offers services such as radiology, inpatient and out-patient surgery, a psychiatric unit, cardiac rehabilitation, stress testing, mammography and more. The hospital opened its doors in 1959 and has been providing quality healthcare to the community ever since, with an ideal location just 20 minutes outside of New Orleans. St. Charles Parish Hospital is currently undergoing renovation to amend not only the hospital’s equipment, but the hospital’s overall approach to healthcare as well. The most recent news at the hospital is the addition of a new, 12,000-square-foot Emergency Department, which is slated to open in late 2011. The hospital’s mission is to “provide quality care and to treat everyone with respect and dignity,” which the hospital has gone above and beyond in order to accomplish through the years. he River Region Parishes are spotted with houses of worship representing virtually all faiths and denominations. This mix of religious institutions comes together to create a strong and highly active spiritual community in St. James, St. John the Baptist and St Charles Parishes. Current parishioners always welcome new faces to join in regularly scheduled worship and prayer services, special gatherings and various other church programming. While each place of worship differs, many offer such services and programs as religious education, group studies, outreach and volunteer opportunities and a host of youth- and adult-oriented programs.
