MultiAd recycles all paper and aluminum in the print production area, as well as all fluorescent light bulbs. We also use vegetable oil based inks, low VOC solvents and alcohol free fountain solutions in the press room. Through October 2010, MultiAd has recycled 860,467 pounds of paper which translates to saving: 7,314 trees, 3,011,610 gallons of water, 163,487 gallons of oil, 1,291 cubic yards of landfill space, 1,720,920 kilowatt hours and 25,814 pounds of air pollutants. We also recycled 21.5 tons of aluminum plates.

Academics are the main focus at Missouri S&T. And whether you are entering Missouri S&T as a member of the Freshman Engineering Program or as a student in one of the many sciences, computing, or liberal arts fields, you will be instructed by some of the best faculty around. Over 99 percent of Missouri S&T faculty members hold the top degree awarded in their field, and they are trained to assist our first-year students with the adjustments required for success at the college level. To further assist first-year students, Missouri S&T provides resources outside the classroom like a counseling center, writing center and an exciting program called Learning Enhancement Across Disciplines (LEAD). LEAD provides students in the first and second year of study with additional tutoring, while they adjust from life at home to a rigorous and challenging new experience at college. All together, these resources add up to undeniable
student success and a record-setting 88 percent retention rate from freshman to sophomore year. Missouri S&T also focuses on applying the knowledge dispensed in the classroom in the laboratory. Opportunities for undergraduate research abound, giving all students the chance to apply what they know to real-world situations. With more than $52 million in research awards and grants, students are able to practice putting principles to use and to develop a working knowledge of industry advancements. Living on campus is a great experience embraced by college campuses all over the nation. The benefits to students are undeniable. You can easily meet other students who are sharing the same changes and challenges as you. At Missouri S&T, there are several Learning Communities for students living in residential housing. These groups encourage learning outside of the classroom. They also open opportunities for peer mentoring. Living on campus has many proven benefits to students. Perhaps most important is the academic success of these students. Students living in residence halls consistently perform above the campus GPA average, and they are also more likely to stay enrolled at Missouri S&T, having a much lower drop-out rate.

OFF-CAMPUS LIVING Most students at Missouri S&T spend about two years living on-campus in university residence halls, residential colleges and even university-owned apartments. But when on-campus living requirements have been met, it is not unusual for students to begin searching the area for an apartment, condo or duplex to call their own. Many students seek out places like Collegiate Station, a studentcentered apartment complex. At Collegiate Station, you are within a short walk or bike ride to campus. Achieving success in the classroom and on the field of play is a reality for about 360 young men and women at Missouri S&T who participate in varsity-level athletics. Part of the Division II Great Lakes Valley Conference, Missouri S&T’s Men and Lady Miners challenge 12 other teams in 13 intercollegiate sports. Each year, COER organizes and hosts a fall and spring career fair on-campus. Summer Programs precollege.mst.edu For students still considering Missouri S&T, summer programs are an excellent option to visit campus and get a true feel for Missouri S&T. Camps range in both age groups they target and topics they cover. Beginning in first grade, children can attend camps designed to spark an interest in science and engineering. For rising high school juniors and seniors, camps include Jackling Introduction to Engineering, Explosives Camp and Nuclear Engineering. New dates and camp themes are released each spring at summer.mst.edu.
sdp.mst.edu At Missouri S&T, the Student Diversity Programs Office focuses on assisting students from ethnic backgrounds that have historically been underrepresented in science and engineering fields. Students at Missouri S&T have many options for getting hands-on learning. These opportunities take them all over the nation and world, as they learn to put their knowledge into practical use. Many S&T students participate in one of ten student design teams like the Solar Miner solar-powered vehicle, the Baja Team offroad buggy, or the Show-Me Solar House. Each team operates out of the Student Design and Experiential Learning Center, an on-campus facility that steps out of the normal classroom setting and engages students in a different, experiment-based form of learning. Students put the theories and concepts they have learned to practical use by building competitionready projects from the ground up. Students participate in everything from fundraising to oil changes, teaching them to be truly industry-ready engineers and business people. Other students choose to participate in one of the service learning student groups like Engineers Without Borders. These
students travel abroad to Central and South America helping rural and remote villages solve problems with unclean water supplies and poor sanitation systems. They are able to put their knowledge to use in a way that can truly change an entire community’s future.

community introduction Incorporated in 1861, the City of Rolla has come a long way from its humble beginnings as a major railway stop for the Frisco Line. Rolla is now a regional center of government, education, shopping, dining, culture and health care in South Central Missouri. Rolla’s small, rural setting provides a safe, cozy community located almost directly between the first and third largest cities in Missouri – St. Louis and Springfield. Rolla’s central location on Interstate 44 makes it the perfect stopping point for travelers, and it makes a quick weekend trip to larger metropolitan areas a breeze for students looking just to get away or spend a weekend shopping, visiting museums and going to concerts. Nestled in the Ozarks, Rolla is surrounded by the natural beauty unique to south-central Missouri. Rolling hills, country highways and spring-fed rivers make the area a perfect fit for any outdoor

activities - hunting, fishing, canoeing and swimming are among the local favorites. Rolla is also near the only United States national forest in Missouri, Mark Twain National Forest, which spans 1.5 million protected acres and provides an ideal location for hiking and camping excursions. Nearby Lane Springs and Meramec Spring Park are also extremely popular outdoor recreation areas. There’s plenty of entertainment to be had indoors as well. Rolla is home to the acclaimed Ozarks Actors Theatre, a summer stock theatre troop, and Leach Theatre, located in the Castleman Hall Performing Arts Center on the Missouri S&T campus, which features student-run productions throughout the year. A skating rink, bowling alley, movie theatre, mini-golf and go-cart complex and local wineries round out the entertainment options.
Most importantly, Rolla is a community focused on the students at Missouri S&T. From Opening Week festivities to the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, the Rolla community strives to make this a home away from home. Rolla also celebrated its 150th Anniversary during the Rolla Sesquicentennial Celebration on June 4, 2011, in downtown Rolla.

Rolla boasts an historic downtown centralized around Pine Street. communityliving Building home and hearth in Rolla is a wise investment for multiple reasons. The city’s culture is enhanced by its proximity to Missouri S&T and the lush landscape of rolling green hills adds to the serenity and the adventurous, outdoorsy aspect of the community. Location is Rolla’s crown jewel–the vast majority of residents live within a 15-minute commute of their workplace. Housing for both renters and buyers is incredibly affordable in Rolla. The mean price in 2009 for a single-family detached home was $133,623, almost $50,000 less than the state mean price of $180,542. The mean price of townhouses and other attached units, $133,950, is about $40,000 less than the state mean price of $174,118. Despite these affordable prices, 53 percent of residents rent rather than own. The Rolla City Parks and Recreation Department manages 33 parks, ranging from small, neighborhood parks with playground equipment to Ber Juan Park, which includes just about every indoor and outdoor recreational activity you can think of. All together, these parks encompass more than 310 acres within the city, and provide open green space and a wide-range of recreational opportunities in proximity to nearly any location in Rolla. Ber Juan Park spans nearly 85 acres of open grassland, trails and recreational facilities, and is located in the east-central part of Rolla, bordered on the south by 10th Street, on the west by Holloway and Farrar, on the north by 14th and 18th streets, and on the east by Burgher Branch. The park includes The Centre, Rolla’s 63,000-square-foot Health and Recreation Complex, tennis courts, SplashZone (Rolla’s outdoor water park), a playground and picnic area, a skate park and the Ber Juan Sportsplex, a multi-field baseball, softball and soccer complex. A walking and exercise trail encompasses most of the park with outdoor fitness equipment stationed along the trail. Schuman Park, roughly 15 acres, is second in size only to Ber Juan, among Rolla’s currently developed park areas. In addition to its lighted softball field and four basketball courts, Schuman offers two playgrounds and a sand volleyball court. The field is also home of the Rolla Lady Bulldogs softball team. The park also offers historical interest, including Frisco Pond, which once served as a major source of water for the railroad,

k-12education Rolla students are served by the Rolla School District as well as a variety of private and parochial education options. Rolla Public Schools provide an eightschool system, with three elementary schools, one middle school, one junior high school, one high school, one technical center and one technical institute. The district prides itself on partnering with the community to provide the best possible educational opportunities to its students. Private and parochial education is also readily accessible as a substitute for the public school system. Such schools and academies as St. Patrick Elementary School, Immanuel Lutheran School and Rolla Seventh-Day Adventist School, among many others, are excellent options for parents who would like their child’s academics to merge with religious practice and education.
