History & Heritage Named after the Sac Indians, the Native Americans living and farming here in the 1700s, the area is still known today as the Sauk Prairie. The English explorer Jonathon Carver declared the Sauk Indian village as the “largest and best built Indian town” he had ever seen. With the introduction of European immigrants, the twin villages developed their own identities. The southern village became Sauk City and is the oldest incorporated village in Wisconsin. It was founded by the colorful Hungarian Count Agoston Haraszthy who, in 1847, built what is today Wollersheim Winery before heading to California where he became the father of the California wineries. Winding your way north along the Wisconsin River, you’ll find the northern twin village of Prairie du Sac. This village kept its French fur trading name meaning “Prairie of the Sac Indians.” Prairie du Sac is home to many fine examples of turn-of-the-last-century architecture. The majestic homes along the tree-lined Park Avenue and Water Street take visitors back to early days along the river. Eagle Island in downtown Prairie du Sac is a one-of-a-kind location where Eagles roost each winter as they soar along the bluffs and dive head-long into the Wisconsin River. Sauk Prairie Area Historical Society The home of the Sauk Prairie Area Historical Society is located in the Tripp Memorial Museum in downtown Prairie du Sac. The museum contains a substantial archive of photographs and local historical information, as well as one of the state’s largest collections of mounted birds. Rotating exhibits bring to life the story of Sauk Prairie. The museum is open year-round Wednesdays through Saturdays, 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m., and during special weekend and evening events, such as their annual Christmas of Yesteryear. The Society maintains two historic country churches

that are available for gatherings and weddings. To learn more, visit www.saukprairiehistory.org. Sauk City Historic Park The Sauk City Historic Preservation Committee has established a Historic Park on Water Street in the 600 block of downtown Sauk City. The park consists of a one-room schoolhouse, one of the earliest Sauk City shops—The Boots & Shoes—and the Hahn House. The Hahn House was home to the Hahn family in 1857 and still sits on its original location. It is unique in that it faced what was then the community’s two highways—the Wisconsin River on the lower level, where the family would have kept their canoes and boats, and Water Street on the upper level. Visitors can tour the buildings and Old Time Candy Shoppe on Saturday afternoons in the summer. To learn more, visit www.saukcity.net/historicpreservation.htm.

Transportation Sauk Prairie Airport The Sauk Prairie Airport began a formal relationship with the Town of Prairie du Sac in 1963 following the signing of a lease with the township creating a public-use airport managed by the Sauk Prairie Airport, Inc. (SPAI). Currently, the airport houses 30 privately owned hangars and 32 based aircraft. A wide variety of aircraft utilize the facilities at the Sauk Prairie Airport and are used for recreation as well as civilian/military training, government/corporate business and air ambulance services. The airport also sees Blackhawk (UH-60) helicopters operated by the Wisconsin Army National Guard training here on a regular basis. Easily accessed via U.S. Highway 12, the general aviation complex hosts two runways (both of which are 2,940 feet long and 60 feet wide), one maintenance facility, an aerial applicator business and a corporate flight department. While the main hangar at the Sauk Prairie Airport doesn’t provide the extended services of some fixed base operators, it does offer wireless Internet access, office space, complimentary coffee and exceptional customer service. Sauk Prairie Transit (Taxi) Sauk Prairie Transit is available through a joint effort between the Villages of Prairie du Sac and Sauk City. The taxi service operates Monday through Friday, 6 a.m.-6 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., offering convenient transportation to doctor’s appointments, retailers and a variety of other local destinations. Adults ride for $3.00, students ride for $2.25 and seniors aged 60 and over utilize the taxi for just $2.00. Call 608-644-9616 to schedule pick-up service. Sauk County Transportation Services Sauk County’s Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) provides convenient and affordable transportation to local citizens. The Bus is a public service affording deviated fixed-route service to several areas throughout Sauk County, connecting the

communities of Baraboo, Bluffview, Prairie du Sac and Sauk City on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, and the communities of Reedsburg, Lake Delton and Baraboo on Wednesday and Friday. Regular bus fare is $2.00 per person, per ride; riders who are aged 60 and older, have a disability or are full-time students ride for only $1.00 per trip. In addition, ADRC offers a volunteer driver escort service for those who are aged 60 and over, who have a disability or who are unable to transport themselves to medical and other necessary appointments. Priority trips are offered for $0.30 per mile. Transportation is scheduled by calling 608-355-3278 or 1-800-830-3533.

Eagles in the Sauk Prairie Riverway The American bald eagle adds to the beauty of Sauk Prairie in the wintertime. Drawn to open fishing waters below the Prairie du Sac dam, abundant sheltered valleys in the bluffs for nighttime roosting, tall riverbank trees for perching and plenty of space to feel secure, these magnificent creatures have graced the community with their presence for decades. Once nearly extinct in Wisconsin because of pesticide use, their numbers have steadily increased and they are no longer on the list of Endangered Species for our state. When waters to the north freeze, eagles migrate to Sauk Prairie. They number anywhere from 100 to 200 birds in peak years. Eagles can be seen in Sauk Prairie from midDecember into March and are celebrated with a Bald Eagle Watching Day in January. Ferry Bluff Eagle Council, Sauk Prairie Area Chamber of Commerce and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Bureau of Endangered Resources host this event, which features birds of prey shows, eagle viewing, bus tours, food and educational displays. Wollersheim winery offers a specialty wine in honor of the eagles. If you cannot make it for this special day, come watch the eagles soaring overhead throughout the winter or perched on Eagle Island in the middle of the river right downtown! Identifying the Bald Eagle It is difficult to mistake an adult bald eagle because of its distinctive white head and tail and its immense six- to eight-foot wingspan. Immature bald eagles aren’t as easy to distinguish because they don’t acquire the snow white head and tail feathers until they’re four to five years old. Immature bald eagles have varying amounts of white mottling all over, often with distinct white patches in their “under wing pits.” First year birds tend to be quite dark. The amount of white in their coloring increases each year until they become the gorgeous birds we’re familiar with.

Best Places to View Bald Eagles Ferry Bluff Eagle Council Outlook: Across from the Mobil Station on Water Street in Prairie du Sac. Here you can get out of your car and use the spotting scopes to see eagles perched on Eagle Island or soaring overhead. An informational kiosk with eagle information is available. Veteran’s Park: North on Water Street, past the business district in Prairie du Sac. A small sign marks the turn to the park. Stay in your car please! Birds may be seen across the river in the tall cottonwoods, flying or fishing. Prairie du Sac Hydroelectric Dam: Continue on Water Street (Hwy 78) north of Prairie du Sac, about one mile, and turn right on Dam Heights Road. Follow signs to the dam. Please stay in your car to watch the eagles fishing. Wollersheim Winery: Take the Hwy 60 Bridge east from Prairie du Sac to Hwy 188 and turn right (south). The winery is approximately one mile on the left. Stop inside the winery before viewing. Eagles frequent the bluff behind the winery. West End of Water Street: Following Water Street south, go straight through the stop lights in Sauk City. The pull-off by the railroad bridge can have good views of eagles loafing in the large oak trees across the channel. We ask that you stay out of the shaded areas on the map because: e Much of it is private land with no trespassing allowed e You won’t get better viewing there, but do run the risk of flushing the eagles, threatening their survival and ruining other people’s chances of seeing them e The birds need about 100 yards between you and them to feel safe e Bald eagles need lots of space—let’s give them a chance to thrive here! www.saukprairie.com

Education Sauk Prairie School District It takes an exceptional educational system to produce exceptional citizens. Recognized as one of the region’s best-kept secrets, Sauk Prairie School District believes in providing opportunities for lifelong learning. The Sauk Prairie community is proud of its schools. Strong support for quality education and for the activities offered by the district is evident by community involvement and participation in district programs. The preparation for lifelong learning begins early. The School Board has set a priority for small class sizes at the elementary level. The district continues to encourage high achievement by offering multiple learning and cocurricular opportunities for all K-12 students. In addition, the district offers an exceptional summer school for school-age children and year-round community education programs for all, from pre-school children to retirees. Sauk Prairie Schools currently enrolls 2,795 4K-12 students residing within its 240 square mile service area, which includes the three villages of Merrimac, Prairie du Sac and Sauk City and all or part of 13 towns. The district has seven school buildings all updated and improved during the last decade. The district believes in technology and has equipped the classrooms with the tools they need in the 21st century and beyond. Arts education is important and in 1998 the community and School Board approved and built River Arts Center, a 500-seat performing arts theatre and gallery space attached to the high school. To foster lifelong learning, the district also owns and maintains the Sauk Prairie Community Education Center.

Arts & Culture

The leadership of Sauk Prairie understands that through art, creativity and talent are nurtured, resulting in a quality workforce and community. One of Wisconsin’s most prolific writers and editors, August Derleth (1909-1971), made his home in Sauk City. Derleth wrote historical novels of Wisconsin, poetry collections, horror and fantasy novels and much more. The community is proud to boast his residency and today showcases many other artists and their art forms.

A community referendum passed in 1998 that led to the construction of the River Arts Center, a 500-seat theatre and gallery space. The River Arts Center hosts many school and community functions. The Sauk Prairie School District is committed to arts education and supports a strong music and art program within the district. The Sauk Prairie Music Association (SPMA) started as a parent group in 1979 known as the Band Boosters. It has evolved through the years to a nonprofit, charitable and educational organization, which provides assistance and

funding for the maintenance of the music program at Sauk Prairie High School. This association supports all classroom and cocurricular music activities, which include: Concert Band and Choir Programs, Marching Band, Musicals, Madrigal Dinners, as well as Executive Session and YTBN Show Choirs. Responsible for raising a portion of the capital for River Arts Center, River Arts Inc. (RAI) incorporated and began the journey of inspiring, enriching and educating the Sauk Prairie community about the arts. Since 1998, RAI has raised more than $1.7 million for the Sauk Prairie community. Each year, RAI partners with the Sauk Prairie School District to offer arts education programs. In addition, RAI offers a performing artist series and gallery exhibits in River Arts Center from October-May of each year.

Showcasing local artists is a priority for River Arts Center—the facility was built with the support of local citizens. In January of each year, the Wisconsin Regional Art Program (WRAP), founded in 1940 by UW-Madison, encourages Wisconsin residents to develop their artistic skills and showcase their work in a positive exhibit opportunity. With 23 WRAP exhibits throughout the state, River Arts Center is proud to support this project and showcase the work of our River Valley artists. In addition to local artists, River Arts Inc. has also been instrumental in bringing in national touring exhibits from the Smithsonian Institute and artists from across the country. With 20 years of commitment to performing arts, the Sauk Prairie Theatre Guild produces two to three plays each year at the River Arts Center. One of the yearly plays is focused on youth in the Sauk Prairie community, while the second play each year showcases adult talent.

Parks & Recreation The Sauk Prairie Recreation Department, operated by the Sauk Prairie School District, is an integral source for community recreation, offering a wide range of programs and events for people of all ages. Throughout the year, community members participate in preschool programs, fitness classes, athletic leagues and camps, enrichment classes and various community events. In addition, the department offers aquatics programs for all ages. Water exercise for adults, open swim sessions, Red Cross-certified swim lessons for all age and skill levels as well as private lessons for children and adults who prefer a smaller setting for swim instruction are available. With an indoor pool at Sauk Prairie High School and an outdoor pool on the corner of Grand Ave. and 5th St. in Prairie du Sac, community members can utilize aquatics programs year-round. Programming is held at various community parks as well as the Community Education Center—the Sauk Prairie’s hub for learning, recreation and wellness.

Together, the villages of Prairie du Sac and Sauk City operate 15 municipal parks. These amenity-filled park sites feature everything from picnic shelters, bike/pedestrian trails and ball and soccer fields to playground equipment, campsites and basketball, volleyball and tennis courts. In addition to these parks, Sauk Prairie residents have access to the great Devil’s Lake State Park, positioned just a few miles north of the area via U.S. Highway 12. This scenic state park is situated along the Ice Age Trail and draws more than 1.4 million visitors who enjoy such activities as rock climbing on one of the many towering cliffs; hiking, mountain biking and cross country skiing along miles of trails; swimming and sunbathing on two large beaches; and plenty of nature and wildlife viewing.
