History While Sierra Vista was only incorporated in 1956, our history can be traced back much further. This area is particularly attractive to military history buffs, due to the presence of Fort Huachuca, which now headquarters the United States Army Intelligence Center and the Network Enterprise Technology Command. Established in 1877, Fort Huachuca (pronounced wa-choo-ka) played a significant role during the Indian Wars of the 1870s and 1880s. It was also the home of the famous 10th Cavalry “Buffalo Soldiers” and their valuable service to the nation is detailed at the excellent Fort Huachuca Historical Museum, where the fascinating past of the U.S. Army in the Southwest unfolds. Many of the military installation’s original buildings still stand today, including the impressive officers’ homes

lining Brown Parade Field and the nearby soldiers’ barracks, which are now used as offices. The Sierra Vista Historical Society works diligently to preserve the past, and offers a self-guided tour of sites marked with informative plaques. The Henry H. Hauser Museum, run by the City of Sierra Vista at the Ethel Berger Center, is a great place to learn more about the pioneers of this once small town and they rotate exhibitions to keep the storytelling fresh. Sierra Vista is also at the heart of the old Wild West, located just 16 miles from world-famous Tombstone. And less than 30 minutes away is the historic mining town of Bisbee, clinging magnificently to copper-filled hills and offering an eclectic range of stores, restaurants and visitor attractions.

Bisbee There’s no place like Bisbee! Located just 26 miles from Sierra Vista, Bisbee offers old-world charm and character by the bucket load. Established during the late 1800s, Bisbee is filled with appealing Victorianera architecture, cobbled alleyways and winding streets that meander throughout its hillside location. It’s a wonderful place to escape for a day or two and explore. With unique shops, art galleries, antique stores and a Smithsonian affiliated museum, Bisbee is a welcome getaway for locals and a must-see for visitors. Around every corner is a landmark or building that has its own tale to tell and in 2005, Bisbee became the first town in America to be named on the National Trust’s Distinctive Destinations list. Its mining history is proudly preserved and retold at the popular Queen Mine Tour, where visitors can get a taste of life underground.

Every year, this small city hosts some 2,000 participants for the Bisbee 1000, a nationally acclaimed race which takes runners and walkers up and down the city’s many historic and narrow stairways. Part of the proceeds help to preserve these steps, most of which were built well over 100 years ago. Dining choices are abundant, with some of the County’s most highly rated restaurants calling Bisbee home, including Screaming Banshee Pizza where guests can watch the chefs create mouthwatering creations in the open plan kitchen. Many of the merchants have come together to form the Bisbee after 5 group, which hosts an old town art walk every second Saturday of the month. The members of this active organization keep their doors open until 8 p.m., offering refreshments, artists’ receptions and live entertainment to visitors.

Tombstone It’s a well-used phrase, but Tombstone truly is “The Town Too Tough to Die”. This is where the Wild West really comes alive through gunslingers, saloons and boardwalks. A drive to Tombstone takes visitors back to the days where scores were settled during violent shootouts, none of them more famous than the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. You can experience the adrenaline filled reenactment of this notorious showdown every afternoon at the Corral, before heading to Big Nose Kate’s Saloon for a slug of your favorite spirit. And speaking of spirits, they say the ghosts of past inhabitants roam the dusty streets and timbered structures of this unique community, where the likes of

Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday ruled the roost. As you wander those streets, you’ll hear the clink of spurs and the firm tread of a cowboy boot as gunfighters, Victorian gentleman and ladies (and ladies of the night!) walk alongside you. While gunfights play their part in the Tombstone experience, this infamous city offers much to keep the whole family entertained, from unique gift and souvenir shops to western wear stores and even a wine-tasting room. Don’t forget to find time to wander the nearby gravesites and markers of those whose final resting place is now Boothill Graveyard, including Billy Clanton and the McLaury brothers, who did not live to tell the tale of the O.K. Corral.

Recreation Thanks to the year-round sunshine that Sierra Vista enjoys, outdoor recreation options are easy to find. Recognizing the needs of cyclists, runners and walkers, the City of Sierra Vista has constructed around 20 miles of multiuse paths that will eventually provide a continuous loop around the city. In addition, the area is ideal for both mountain bikers and long distance bike riders due to the extensive trails and miles of long roads that offer something for all levels of enthusiasts. Golfers will not be disappointed with the three courses in the region – one private and two public – that provide blue skies, stunning scenery and fairways that suit the beginner and challenge the more seasoned players. Hikers can hit the trails of the Huachuca

Mountains, knowing they will enjoy native desert landscapes, shady woodland and a wide variety of wildlife, including up to 14 species of hummingbird known to frequent the area, in particular Ramsey Canyon Nature Reserve. Star gazers get a clear view of the dark skies across Cochise County, where the Milky Way glides across the galaxy in spectacular fashion. Shooting stars are a frequent sight in these parts and it is no surprise that many astronomy enthusiasts choose to settle and build backyard telescopes here.

Wine Country Wine country in Arizona? Our local vineyards are giving their grape-growing counterparts in California a serious run for their money. Just a short drive from Sierra Vista lies the Sonoita-Elgin wine region, home to around a dozen wineries. Many are producing award-winning wines which are receiving recognition in Wine Spectator magazine and garnering the attention of White House sommeliers. The wide open grasslands and spectacular mountain ranges provide an unforgettable wine tasting experience.
