ith genuine sincerity and honesty, we welcome you to Grant County. A collection of communities and cultures offering history, art, education, commerce and a quality of life deemed rare in America today. While Silver City was founded in 1870, the surrounding area has been inhabited for more than 11,000 years. This could possibly explain Grant County’s undefined “feeling of home” as described by first-time visitors and locals alike. Striving to maintain this compassionate atmosphere, the Silver City Grant County Chamber of Commerce has been servicing the community for more than 103 years. The Chamber was established in 1905 and has subsequently traveled alongside the business community while trekking through the highs and lows of what could be called “the struggles of western commerce.”

backgrounds – bringing new perspectives, material goods and traditions. The early 20th century saw a new wave of influences from the eastern health seekers who sought relief from consumption (tuberculosis) in the area’s congenial climate.

n elusive essence is more than the sum of a community’s parts, its people and its past, but reflecting all of these elements is what makes a personality of a place. Southwest New Mexico has an undeniable personality from its ruggedly beautiful landscape, echoes of vanished cultures and a continuing, complex human heritage. It is a richly textured living collage, with a uniqueness only found in rural areas that are historically multi-cultural. There are several historic layers in Grant County, some scarred by conflict, others enhanced through collaboration, each contributing something to the area today. The region’s deep Hispanic and Native American roots are reflected in the distinctive foods, architecture, family ties

and community celebrations. The Spanish introduced cattle into the New World, in which the Southwest owes its ranching tradition to. New Mexico’s 19th-century Territorial Period of westward expansion introduced soldiers, miners and settlers of many different

The valley where Silver City is located was known as San Vicente in the early 18th century, it would undoubtedly have been a permanent Spanish or Mexican settlement if not for the continuing Apache hostilities. In 1870 when silver was discovered nearby, the town of Silver City was christened, even though many old-timers in the region wanted to keep the original name of San Vicente. Over the years many descriptive slogans have been attached to Silver City: “The World’s Sanatorium,” “ A Paradise for

Consumptives,” “The Biggest Little City” and even “Air Conditioned by Nature.” Whatever you may call it, the Silver City region seems to have held a special attraction for waves of discoveries. Silver City was founded with the future in mind, unlike the many Western frontier towns that have vanished into a memory. Frustrated in its early efforts to establish local government and a public school system, Grant County threatened to defect to Arizona in 1876, promoting a profound change of heart in the Territorial legislature. As a result, Silver City is the oldest unincorporated town in New Mexico, and the only one still operating under a Territorial charter. It boasts the oldest public school system in the state. It is a town that was built to last, and as a result is rich with surviving historic neighborhoods to tell the stories of its visionary founders. Many fortunes have been made and lost in the boom-to-bust economy of Southwest New Mexico, but the most consistent and valuable resource of the region has always been its people. Silver City was established on a foundation of people volunteering, its 1878 charter

required all able-bodied men to donate two days’ labor each year to street maintenance. The rural character and spirit live on in countless ongoing efforts, from hands-on park construction to youth athletics and literacy programs and arts events. Continuing the tradition of early miners who piece together the first silver-crushing mill and local women who decided to establish a hospital, the quality of life here is a local product. Old-fashioned courtesies still prevail in Grant County as strangers greet one another on the street and motorists pull to the side when a funeral procession

passes and yield to pedestrians. There is a general understanding that events don’t begin precisely at their scheduled times. Legal notices appear in both English and Spanish in the newspapers. Local celebrations (Fourth of July parades, fiestas, live performances, communitywide art festivals, rodeos) are marked by hospitality and a large capacity for enjoyment. The self-reliance, stubbornness, neighborliness, orneriness, generosity and sturdiness associated with the Old West all combine to create a personality of place that is interesting, engaging and, most of all, real.

Mining has played a key role in New Mexico’s history and economic development since its earliest days. By: Rivkela Brodsky The Albuquerque Journal, Mountain View Telegraph. Reprinted with permission. Permission does not imply endorsement.

T

he legacy of mining runs deep in New Mexico. You might not even stumble across it.

Hundreds of years of mining history are evidenced by towns and other geographical markers named after the industry – ever heard of Silver City or the Turquoise Trail? – and mines scattered across the state, an estimated 10,000 of them hazardous and not yet reclaimed. It is an industry that has played a huge economic role in the area of the past 300 years and continues to do so with jobs and revenue. Our history also reflects the dangers that were inherent in underground mining, with, for example, disaster at mines in Dawson southwest of Raton 10 years apart that claimed almost 400 lives.

The state is still a leading producer in minerals, extracting more than $1.7 billion worth in 2009, generating $70.9 million in revenues to the state in the form of royalties, leases and taxes – a record – and more than $287.2 million in payroll with 207 registered active mining operations, according to the state Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department’s 2010 annual report. That’s mostly coal, potash and copper.

pushing safety. The mine won the Sentinels of Safety award in 1976. The trophy is displayed as part of the exhibit at the New Mexico Mining Museum. Mines have also left an environmental impact. Federal law requires mining companies to do reclamation, but it was not until 1993 when the New Mexico Mining Act was passed that those requirements increased and game the state final oversight, says Virginia McLemore, a senior economist geologist at the New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources at New Mexico Tech.

The state is “very rich in natural resources,” says Mike Bowen, the executive director of the New Mexico Mining Association. By statehood, there was prospecting for gold in the Cerillos Mountains and turquoise being mined in the Silver City area. Indeed, the history books speak of a long history of mining in New Mexico – of turquoise being mined by prehistoric Indians using primitive methods; of Spaniards looking – and failing – to find gold, although it was in the area; of copper being discovered in 1800—not far from Silver City; of gold being discovered in 1900 but have since become crumbling ghost towns; and many more stories. One of the biggest milestones in the past century was the discovery of surface uranium in 1950 by Paddy Martinez, a Navajo resident of Grants, which brought the mineral to the attention of mining companies. That began more than 40 years of lucrative uranium production, which resulted in the employment of thousands of people working for high wages. “These were really good jobs,” says Steve Owen, who worked in the mining industry for 20 years – five of them in Grants. “The best miners did really well over the long term.” The jobs paid close to $50,000 a year – and that was 30 years ago. So Grants, like other mining towns, grew with the boom in mining, says Star Gonzales, the executive director of the New Mexico Mining Museum in Grants. When demand by the federal government, the main purchaser of uranium, slowed and uranium mining came to a halt in the early 1980s it had a dramatic impact on the city, says

The legislation also required a company to have a closure plan before a permit is issued, she says. “It’s not stopped mining in the state,” Bowen says. “It certainly has cost the companies, but they are more than willing to do that. It’s the corporate thing to do.”

Gonzales, who is also the director of the Grants/Cibola County Chamber of Commerce. “We had a thriving community. People were being paid a lot,” she says. “When you do lose that kind of individual, and we lost them, it has a huge effect.” They may have been good-paying jobs, but for many years, miners were subjected to hazardous health and safety conditions working in the mines. “When I started on the ground, there were no regulations,” says Art Gebeau, who spent 30 years as a miner and is on the board of the New Mexico Mining Museum. “The state had no regulations.” Many of his co-workers now have lung cancer, he says. Uranium mines need “enormous amounts of air” to go through the mine because of the radon gas uranium procedures, Gebeau says. Jack Farley, another former miner and board member of the museum, says that when he came to Grants to work in a uranium mine in 1960, there were 35 fatalities that year – “a big number.” When he became superintendent of the Sandstone Mine, he says, he started

Today, coal remains the largest employer in the state’s mining industry, with about 1,500 employees in 2010, including contract and reclamation workers, according to the state. Bowen says mining is bigger now than it was 100 years ago when New Mexico became a state. “Certainly, all the extractive industries have been one of the driving forces behind the state; the state budget goes pretty much with it,” he says. “Today mining is the employer of 6,000 people with an average salary of $60,000 to $61,000 a year. It’s bigger than it was 100 years ago. It has been at the 6,000 figure for quite a number of years.” The state ranks 12th in the nation for coal production, sixth for molybdenum, third for copper and first for potash production, which is concentrated in Carlsbad. The state has approved several permits for uranium mining, but there is none currently going on. “Everything you use and see in this world is from mining,” Farley says. “People think mining companies don’t care about people. That it is just a way to make money, but that’s not true…The biggest problem is that people are not educated about it.”

BEAR CANYON LAKE

enerous views of mountains, grasslands and the deep turquoise blue sky can be seen on quiet, winding touring roads. The area’s scenic byways offer the roads less-traveled that lead to the 3.3 million acres of Gila National Forest, offering destinations such as the City of Rocks State Park and both of area’s national monuments – the Gila Cliff Dwellings and Fort Bayard. While looking over this beauty and serenity, you’ll find the time and inclination to stop, explore and connect with nature.

G

An easy drive from many communities in Grant County, including Silver City, Hurley, Bayard and Santa Clara, Baer Canyon Lake is a popular destination for fishing, picnics, bird watching and more.

LAKE ROBERTS

BILL EVANS LAKE

Lake Roberts is in northeast Grant County, near the intersection of New Mexico Highway 15 and Highway 35. It is close to the Gila Cliff Dwellings and the community of Lake Roberts.

14 d www.silvercity.org

This man-made lake is a great lunch stop for drivers taking the Trail of the Mountain Spirits National Scenic Byway just off Highway 35. While easily passable by almost all vehicles, access to the lake is via a short gravel road that rises steeply. Drivers with long trailers or heavy vehicles should investigate the road’s condition before their visit. Located along Highway 180 in the community of Riverside a road sign identifies the paved road to take to Bill Evans Lake.

The lake is a great place all year to watch birds and wildlife, both trout and warm water fish species are suited to the lake.

SILVER CITY OPEN LAKES/ BOSTON HILL TRAILS Sites on Silver City’s rugged Boston Hill immediately recall the town’s historic era of hard-rock mining for copper, silver and other precious metals with names like “Adonis Pits,” “Luck Separation Mill” and the “King Bolt Pit.” Today, these destinations have been turned into hiking destinations for one of town’s large green breaks, the Boston Hill Open Space Trail System.

THE CATWALK Approximately five miles from Glenwood is the Catwalk National Scenic Trail, located just at the end of Highway 174, also known as Catwalk Road.

NM-SIL-CD-11 Body.qxp:NM-SIL-CD-11 Body.qxp

The Catwalk National Scenic Trail offers a fantastic glimpse into the geologic and historic foundations of the region. As a result of cataclysmic volcanic actions, the area now offers a beautiful picnic spot right next to Whitewater Creek, a challenging one-mile trail along the historic 1890s mining waterway. This is a sense of place that creates images of an earlier time. Referring to the original plank-board walkway placed atop the steel pipe used to bring water to the ore processing plant, The Catwalk ruins can still be seen near the parking area. While most of the pipe is now gone, much of the current all-access trail follows this original route which winds right through the center of the creek and perched safely a dozen feet above the creek. Just keep an eye out for trout cruising the waters below.

the Mimbres Valley of the Chihuahuan Desert. The rock formations, formed of volcanic ash welded together about 35 million years ago, have changed in form over the years, due to wind and rain. The monolithic formations to many seem like buildings, homes and chimneys, with the paths through them being the streets of the “city.” Campers can take advantage of an RV park or choose among the 62 campsites scattered throughout the park. Activities include hiking, birding, photography and bicycling. A Visitor Center has interpretive exhibits and a botanical garden. The dark skies of New Mexico’s southwest corner lend themselves to star gazing by the amateur and professional alike. The first astronomical observatory established by New Mexico State Parks lies within City of Rocks State Park. Periodic star parties are a feature of the park.

Plant life includes desert flora, such as yucca, agave, cacti and ocotillo. Among the rocks grow Emory and gray oaks. Making their home in the park are mule deer, roadrunners, javelinas, cactus wrens, diamondback rattlesnakes, ground squirrels, coyotes and jackrabbits. Until about 1200 A.D., Mimbres Indians roamed the area and arrowheads and pottery sherds have been found. The park also lies within the traditional homeland of the Chiricahua and Warm Springs Apache. The first explorers, the Spanish, discovered copper, which by the 1800s was being developed by Spaniards and newer Anglo settlers, and being loaded from the nearby Santa Rita Mine and transported to Chihuahua, Mexico. For more information and maps, visit http://www.emnrd.state.nm.us/prd/ cityrocks.htm.

Once a Historic Ranch, now an RV Park for campers to enjoy the beauty of nature. The Lodge still maintains the old ranch charm, along with rooms for rent. We offer full hook-ups, bath house and laundry facilities. Located off Highway 90, 7 miles up a mountain road, featuring tall pines, cool breezes, hiking trails, and ATV friendly. It’s 20 miles south of Silver City. Once you come up, you’ll know why it’s such a well-kept secret!

The fort was home to Native American Scouts, Buffalo Soldiers and Anglo troops, following the Civil War. When it was discovered that the high, dry climate proved beneficial to those suffering from tuberculosis, soldiers were treated there, just as the fort was being decommissioned in 1899. Many recovered and stayed in the area to become productive and important citizens of Silver City and Grant County. Fort Bayard is also home to one of only two national cemeteries in New Mexico. Several Medal of Honor winners are buried at the site.

MOGOLLON GHOST TOWN THE GILA CLIFF DWELLINGS NATIONAL MONUMENT Grant County, New Mexico, is the gateway to the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument, which lies about two hours north of Silver City. The Mogollon people built the pueblotype dwellings set in caves almost 800 years ago. Five sets of caves and dwellings lie in Cliff Dweller Canyon in the Gila Wilderness of the Gila National Forest. The canyon is deep and narrow and the terrain steep and rugged. A trail leads to the dwellings, which can be seen on the cliff side from along the trail. Most of the wood seen in the dwellings is the wood originally put in by the inhabitants during the 13th century. Bring hat, sunscreen and plenty of water for your trek. Because the altitude ranges from about 5,700-6,000 feet in the immediate vicinity of the dwellings, be prepared. The rainy months are July and August, when almost-daily afternoon thunderstorms are the norm. Water can pour down the canyon after storms. Large animals include elk and mule deer, which are sometimes seen. Mountain lions and black bear also live there, but are rarely seen by visitors. Coyotes may be heard at night. Although wolves live in the vicinity the chance of seeing one is rare. The most common birds around the monument are vultures, ravens, crows, hawks, hummingbirds and various songbirds. 16 d www.silvercity.org

The area is forested with ponderosa pine, Gambel’s oak, Douglas fir, New Mexico juniper, piùon pine and alligator juniper, among others. The Gila Cliff Dwellings, Gila Visitor Center and Gila Cliff Dwellings Trailhead Contact Station are open every day of the year, including all holidays. For more information, visit http://www.nps.gov/gicl/index.htm.

GOMEZ PEAK TRAIL SYSTEM Located just five miles north of Downtown Silver City, just inside the boundaries of the Gila National Forest, near Little Walnut Picnic Area, is the Gomez Peak Trail System. Over 11 miles of non-motorized trail running through the forested stands of pinyon, juniper, oak and ponderosa pine are suitable for hiking, mountain biking, birding, trail running and horseback riding. Elevations reach between 6,200 feet at the Gomez Peak Trailhead to over 7,400 feet at the top of Eighty Mountain, where spectacular views can be seen along the Continental Divide, looking south across the town of Silver City, west toward the Arizona border, north into the snowcapped peaks of the Mogollon Mountains and eastward into the Mimbres Valley and Black Range.

FORT BAYARD Fort Bayard, just off U.S. 180 East out of Silver City, was established in 1866 to protect settlers, ranchers, travelers and miners from Apache raids. After the Indian wars, the fort became respite for soldiers recovering from war.

A scenic nine-mile tour can be seen from Glenwood to Mogollon, but this hour or longer trip should never be taken in the dark or in poor weather conditions. Highway 159 may be closed above or below Mogollon in the winter, so check driving conditions beforehand in Glenwood. While paved as far as Mogollon, the road is frequently one lane and winds tightly through the mountains. However, this drive winds through the high desert of Grant and neighboring Catron counties and includes a number of spectacular views. Bands of mountain bighorn sheep may sometimes be seen on the cliffs over the highway close to Glenwood. Pronounced muggy-own, Mogollon is part ghost town and part quiet retreat, offering a historic jewel perched in the Mogollon Mountains of southern Carton County, just north of Grant County.

BIRDING Each year 339 (85 percent) of the bird species found in New Mexico can be spotted on the scenic byways of Grant County each year. The prime riparian habitat of the Gila River is a major migration corridor, and the diversity of grasslands and pine forests provide abundant opportunities for birders to add many western species to their list. A small sampling of the varieties include: Painted Redstart, Montezuma Quail, Red-faced Warbler, Olive Warbler, Lucy’s Warbler, Common Black Hawk, Pinyon Jay, Steller’s Jay, American Dipper, Juniper and Bridled Titmouse and eight species of hummingbirds. Birding maps are available at the Visitors Center with directions to the best locations. Come and bird in the beauty, solitude and serenity of Grant County.

This area is heralded for having some of the clearest and darkest night skies in the nation, thanks to the vast wilderness of the Gila National Forest in Grant County’s backyard,

opular theory says that the word Gila was derived from a Spanish contraction of Hah-quah-sa-eel, a Yuma Indian word meaning, “running water which is salty.” The naming of the Gila National Forest is indicative of its interesting history and beauty. A paradise tucked away in southwestern New Mexico, the forest is an escape from modern society’s busy lifestyle for those seeking solitude.

Gila’s beauty is just as unique as every national forest, offering diversity in mountains, deep canyons, meadows and semi-desert country. Elevations range from 4,200 to 10,900 feet and cover four out of six life zones. Flora and fauna are diverse, while ocotillo and cactus are found in the lower elevations, and juniper, pine, aspen and spruce-fir forests are plentiful in the high mountains. Wildlife such as black bear, mountain lion, elk, deer, pronghorn, bighorn sheep and wild turkey inhabit the forest while bald eagles, peregrine falcons and redtailed hawks soar in the wind. A rich history of the Mogollon and Apache Indians, Spaniards, Mexicans, ranchers, prospectors and miners boast in the Gila National Forest. Place names like Raw Meat Canyon, Tepee Canyon and Grave Canyon tell the tales of the past. Another unique beauty of the Gila National Forest is its wilderness. The Gila, Aldo Leopold and Blue Range wilderness offer unparalleled hiking and horseback riding. These magnificent mountainous regions impart an indescribable feeling of awe and wonderment. Former Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas may have captured the feeling when he said, “wilderness helped preserve man’s capacity of wonder…the power to feel, if not see, the miracles of life, of beauty and

“We reached the old wolf in time to watch a fierce green fire dying in her eyes. I realized then, and have known every since, that there was something new to me in those eyes…something known only to her and to the mountain. I was young then and full of trigger-itch; I thought that because fewer wolves meant more deer that no wolves would mean hunters’ paradise. But after seeing the green fire die, I sensed that neither the wolf nor the mountain agreed with such a view,” Aldo Leopold eloquently stated this during one of his hunting trips into the Gila National Forest. Such is the legacy of the Gila – a beautiful and unique forest with majestic mountains, a complex interwoven fabric of all living things.

MUSEUMS

ilver City is home to two outstanding museums: the Silver City Museum and the Western New Mexico University Museum.

The Silver City Museum is located downtown in the history H.B. Ailman House and features special exhibits, a local history library and a museum store. It is open Tuesday through Sunday at easily caters to locals and tourists. The WNMU Museum is located on West 10th Street in the interior of the campus, housed in a 1917 building with intact design features such as the truss-beamed ceiling. The famous architectural firm of Trost and Trost designed it and the extensive collection includes the world’s largest permanent display of the region’s Mimbres pottery, artifacts and culture. Historic photographs of the university, Maria Martinez pottery and traveling exhibits also fill the museum. The museum and gift shop are open daily, but normally closed during university holidays and breaks.

THE ARTS COMMUNITY The arts scene in Silver City offers colorful galleries, electric art, independent artists, high curbs and funky streets lined with murals and turn-of-thecentury buildings offering a fantastic walk, with many special openings scheduled throughout the year. Here artists escape the high rents and rigid

lifestyles to find freedom of expression and friendly camaraderie. Artists often welcome visitors into their creative space, offering a personal touch that has all too often disappeared in larger communities.

The crossroads of Yankie and Texas Streets is the center of the man Arts District; studios, galleries, a coffee shop and an eatery beckon visitors to “sit a spell.” Artists are often available to discuss their work first hand that ranges from simple and inexpensive to museum quality. Galleries are also dispersed throughout downtown as well as Bayard and Hurley. Silver City has been name as one of the “100 Best Art Towns in America” even though the art scene is fairly recent compared to its rich mining and ranching history. Part of this success has been due to The Mimbres Region Arts Council, which is dedicated to enriching the cultural life of southwestern New Mexico by providing quality programs that nurture and inspire a love and understanding of the arts.

ENTERTAINMENT The SCGC Chamber of Commerce, Grant County Community Concert Association, Mimbres Region Arts Council, Western New Mexico University, private business and numerous community-based programs round out the gamut of entertainment opportunities. The most wonderful obstacle of the local residents is directly reflected through the abundant assortment of year-round happenings to choose from.

n architecturally diverse community, Grant County’s history begins with remnants of the early Cliff Dwellings to settled mining camps and eventually the Victorian Homes built by the town’s forefathers in the late 1800s. In the 1960s ranch-style homes prevailed which eventually translated into the more modern Mediterranean and Southwestern-style homes you’ll see today. Many early residences still stand today, making it easy to see how the homes of Grant County have visibly evolved with the times. Over the past 10 years the housing market of Grant County has shown a steady increase. Bargains can be found in areas like Bayard, Hurley and Santa Clara. Many residents of Grant County choose to live in outlying rural areas with a bit more acreage and a manufactured home. These properties list for an average price of $162,000.

22 d www.silvercity.org

In recent years, subdivisions such as Dos Griegos, Wind Canyon Estates, Branding Iron Properties and Canyon Country have moved the upscale buyers to a bit more of a rural setting within minutes of town. These properties come with city utilities and smaller acreages to larger land parcels with fewer utilities with prices averaging $82,500.

With all of these options ranging in style and date of homes to wide variety of pricing, it is easy to see why cultural and architectural diversity of Grant County has remained so vividly present and why those living here or just passing through adore the community.

rant County offers seniors a slower pace, active community and rural quality of life. The temperate climate, abundant sunshine, blue skies and clean air energize the spirit, and the low humidity reduces, and often eliminates, old aches and pains. While Silver City is more than 90 miles away from the border rich cultural influences of the region’s Old Mexico heritage remain. The cost of living here is reasonable with lower property taxes, no sales tax on groceries and many senior discounts are offered throughout the community. Various architectural styles, topography and prices can be found in he residential neighborhoods. The tranquil communities of Tyrone and Hurley are especially popular with seniors as well as 55-and-older condominiums and rental homes.

Here, folks find they finally have the time to enjoy participating in the hobbies, clubs, community service, volunteerism, teaching/skill training and personal growth (and perhaps part-time work) they have been yearning for.
