letter from the chamber I’m proud to be addressing you as the President of the Solana Beach Chamber of Commerce. I bought my first piece of property here in 1970. It was a quaint, quiet little burg in 1970 and still is, with less than 14,000 residences…and more charming than ever. After becoming a city in 1986, (we just had our 20th anniversary), the people of the town finally had some control over its destiny! Since that time, the community put a plan together that has been diligently put into place. We have unique shopping areas, especially the Cedros Design District…a stylish train station (you can get on the Coaster Commuter or go anywhere with Amtrak)…a wonderful new Beach Park opened in June of 2007…a revamping of our 101 Corridor, giving it a Village Flair (also happening in 2007)…A great Coastal Rail Trail that allows you to get your exercise comfortably along 101…we even have two golf courses (one public, one private) and tennis clubs…you get to enjoy all of this with the best weather in the world! Our city has a majority of local businesses... We aren’t a carbon copy of other cities…and refuse to be! Most of our restaurants and shopping are within walking distance. We have small-town living with a contemporary flair! The Solana Beach Chamber of Commerce, which will have its 60th anniversary of incorporation in 2008, tries to do its part by working with our businesses and city officials to bring all of our city’s dreams to reality. Our Board of Directors and Manager have a lot of talent and good ideas to improve our services to the business community and its citizens. We are proud of our office staff. They go out of their way to help you, whether you are a new visitor to our town or a business member of the community.

history Past, Present & Future
Prior to 1923, the area which is now the city of Solana Beach was known as Lockwood Mesa, and was used for the growing of grains and lima beans. The mesa, comprising approximately 220 acres had been first settled in 1886 by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Jones and their children. Another early settler of Solana Beach was Edmund Stevens and his family, from South Dakota, who retired to the area in 1892. In 1922, Colonel Ed Fletcher, with backing from the Santa Fe Railroad, bought approximately 140 acres of the mesa from George Jones. The Stevens heirs began selling their property for development in 1932. The original subdivision map of Solana Beach was filed on March 5,1923 and featured the central plaza next to the ocean, which is still a focal point of the community today. The post office and the Santa Fe Irrigation District were also established in 1923.
Fletcher Cove, the main public access to the beach, and site of annual community festivals, was created by using a combination of hydraulic washing and extensive steam shovel work which made a gap in the picturesque bluffs. With the exception of the first years of the Great Depression, Solana Beach grew at a gradual and steady pace. A community lifeguard service at the beach began in 1941, fire protection was inaugurated in 1949 and the first sewers were installed in 1950. Beginning in the late 1940s, local Solana Beach officials meeting at the lumberyard, negotiated with the California Department of Highways to move the planned eight-lane interstate highway from the Coast Highway inland. Solana Beach business people made numerous trips to Sacramento and the local community newspapers sustained the effort to publicize the desires of the community. Finally, in 1957, the state ran up the white flag and announced that it had selected an uninhabited inland route for Interstate 5. This freeway now bisects Solana Beach inland.

location and transportation Easily Accessible
Solana Beach, located in beautiful San Diego County, enjoys an ideal position that is near a wealth of attractions, yet withdrawn from the everyday bustle. Just 30 minutes from downtown San Diego, Solana Beach can be reached via a variety of modes of transportation. Solana Beach is accessed easily from Interstate 5, Highway 101, Lomas Santa Fe Drive and Via de la Valle. San Diego International Airport is 21 miles to the south along I-5, offering 18 passenger carriers serving destinations worldwide. There is an established network of public transportation, including the North County Transit District, which extends bus service, as does the Metropolitan Transit System. For train service to regional destinations, Amtrak stops at the station at 105 N. Cedros Ave. The Coaster is the local commuter train that goes from Oceanside to San Diego. Residents in Solana Beach utilize this system of transportation to enjoy their ride to work. 88

The sunny shores of Solana Beach offer endless opportunities for recreation, from outdoor fun and historical sites to artistic and cultural attractions. Fletcher Cove Park, one of Solana Beach’s most popular attractions, offers sun-filled fun along its mile-long shore. Additionally, Fletcher Cove Park has been home to surfing competitions, triathlons, and is the site of the Annual Fiesta Del Sol, a weekend affair that features music, games, food and fun, all in celebration of the community spirit. Solana Beach also maintains a number of parks, including La Colonia Park, San Elijo Lagoon and Nature Reserve, and San Dieguito River Regional Park. Solana Beach celebrates its multicultural heritage in many artistic forms. The North Coast Repertory Theatre stages an award-winning season, performing a wide range of works, and giving residents a chance to enjoy as well as participate in quality theatre. You will find diverse art galleries throughout Solana Beach concentrated in the Cedros Ave. Design District.

Solana Beach is graced with an outstanding quality of life, ensuring its residents enjoy the best in public services, quaint neighborhoods, convenient services and safety. All of its over 6,300 homes share the same proximity to the ocean, mountains and greenbelts, making it a unique and picturesque place in which to reside. The majority of Solana Beach’s housing development was completed in the 1960s and 1970s, and consist of primarily detached single family homes located west of Interstate 5. Today, many of these homes are being remodeled to take advantage of their expansive lot sizes. While family homes predominate, there are still opportunities for permanent and seasonal renters, as well as a few townhomes and senior living facilities.

Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla is an established trauma center, offering a range of services, including 24-hour emergency services, intensive care, radiation oncology, neurology, mental health services, and more. With 293 beds and over 2,200 employees, La Jolla has a Cardiac Treatment Center, Imaging Center, The Whittier Institute for Diabetes, and Scripps Polster Breast Care Center.

Solana Beach is a General Law City overseen by a Council/Manager form of government. The City Council, which is made up of five Council members, one of whom is the acting Mayor, is responsible for legislative affairs, and whose goal it is to ensure fiscal responsibility and maintain a high quality of life and community character. Residents also benefit from many communityminded services, including community development, art and recreation, and public safety, under whose auspices are law enforcement and the fire department.
