HISTORY
ather Jacques, a Jesuit missionary, made the first known reference to the South County area centuries ago. In later years, the region attracted Europeans trading and traveling westward. These immigrants began to claim land along the great Meramec River, constructing ferries across in order to reach frontier settlements and trade centers. In 1764, Pierre LaClede, a French fur trapper, established St. Louis as a flourishing trade post on the western banks of the Mississippi River. The purchase of the Louisiana Territory from France in 1803 secured land along the Mississippi River for further expansion. The St. Louis area transformed
St. Louis and its neighboring communities continued to expand along with the Midwest during the industrial age. Steady growth commenced with the construction of interstates 44, 55 and 270 as well as the Jefferson Barracks Bridge over the Mississippi River, especially during the 1950s post-war baby boom. By the 1970s, the area felt a major surge in growth, as people began to notice and take advantage of the high quality of life enjoyed in this area — a distinction that is still cherished to this day.

W
hile largely populated, much of South County is unincorporated. It is the most homogeneous area within St. Louis County and major communities include Fenton, Lemay, Mehlville, Oakville, Affton and Sunset Hills. The start of the Ozark Mountains and Ozark Plateau begin in South St. Louis County and neighboring Jefferson County. Many communities have an abundance of gently rolling hills. The foothills of the Ozark Mountains begin in southwestern St. Louis County, with most of the rest of the county being fairly level plateau. This western part of the county is the least developed, due to rugged topography. Bluffs along the Mississippi in the south of the county rise about 200-300 feet above the river. A major floodplain area is the Chesterfield Valley, in the western part of the county, along the Missouri River, formerly called “Gumbo Flats after its rich, dark soil; it was submerged by at least 10 feet of water during the Great Flood of 1993, but recent development there is protected by a higher levee. agricultural, but is being increasingly developed. The River des Peres drains the interior of county before flowing underground into the City of St. Louis and then resurfacing to form the boundary between southern portions of St. Louis City and St. Louis County. Other streams include Coldwater Creek, Bonhomme Creek, and Creve Coeur Creek, flowing into the Mississippi River; Kiefer Creek, Fishpot Creek, and Grand Glaize Creek, flowing into the Meramec River; Deer Creek and Gravois Creek, flowing into the River des Peres; and Maline Creek, flowing into the Mississippi River.

For the last three years, MSD has earned the “Distinction in Performance” recognition from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. The district is among 330 public school districts in the state to earn this award, which is based on such performance standards as state-mandated MAP test scores, ACT scores, attendance and graduation rates. This marked the fifth time in the past six years that MSD has received this prestigious accolade.

The staff also includes registered nurses with specialized training in caring for cancer patients. A research coordinator also is available to talk with patients about possible participation in therapeutic clinical trials. A linear accelerator provides state-of-the-art radiation therapy, and Washington University operates an infusion center for chemotherapy. The 16-acre site includes parking close to the building and green space for patients and their families to enjoy.
Multidisciplinary care provided by radiation oncologists, medical oncologists and surgeons at Siteman-South County allows patients to see as many as three physicians in one trip. This team approach also means a patient’s treatment plan can be determined in one visit.
Siteman-South County’s address is 5225 Midamerica Plaza. For more information about the location, visit www.sitemansouth.wustl.edu. Siteman’s other facilities are at Washington University Medical Center in St. Louis, Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital in Creve Coeur and Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital in St. Charles County.

PUBLIC SAFETY
THE MEHLVILLE FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT, ST. LOUIS COUNTY POLICE
he communities of South St. Louis County had little in the way of quality fire protection before 1930. With the forming of the Mehlville Improvement Association that same year, the group worked to create the much needed fire service. In 1934, Charles Feltz donated a 1925 Ford Model T equipped with a farmstyle irrigation pump. By 1936, through major fundraising efforts, the Association was able to purchase a 1919 American LaFrance pumper from the St. Louis Fire Department. After that pumper was destroyed in an accident, the Association purchased a new pumper from the Central Fire Truck Company in 1940.
T
The all-volunteer fire department functioned until 1953 when firefighters proposed and organized a fire district. By the end of that year, voters approved the formation of the Mehlville Fire Protection District (MFPD) in order to accommodate a growing population. Today, the MFPD (ISO 3 Rating) operates out of seven strategically placed stations in order to provide quick response to those residents and businesses located within the district boundaries. The firefighters and paramedics employed by the MFPD provide high-quality fire, rescue, emergency medical, fire prevention and inspection services to a coverage area of 52 square miles and a population of more than 110,000 people — a number that grows to 130,000-plus during the day.
The history of the St. Louis County Police Department goes back to 1995, when the department was formed to serve the growing needs of the citizens of the County. Now with an authorized strength of over 835 commissioned officers as well as over 250 civilian members, the department is divided into four divisions, each with a special role to play in our daily mission: To Serve and Protect the citizens and visitors of St. Louis County.
|
PUBLIC SAFETY
The St. Louis County Police Department serves its communities and citizens with the highest of expectations
for the values of its employees. Their mission statement makes clear their reason for existence and the IACP Law Enforcement Codes of Ethics and their statement of values and civilian codes of ethics clearly identify the guidelines within which they will accomplish their mission.
