Thanks to the Streeterville Chamber of Commerce’s continued hard work, this area is one of the most vibrant and thriving mixed-use neighborhoods in all of Chicago. The Streeterville Chamber provides an excellent service to its business members and does much to enhance this very important downtown community.
s Vice Mayor of the City of Chicago and Alderman of downtown Chicago’s 42nd Ward, I am proud to represent tens of thousands of businesses and organizations in the Central Business District. I am fortunate to have the Streeterville Chamber of Commerce as one of my key downtown partners in advocating on behalf of the many diverse business interests in Streeterville.
I am grateful for my strong working partnership with the Streeterville Chamber of Commerce. I look forward to continuing our progress by working together to further improve the local business environment and to encourage future investment, job creation and economic growth in downtown Chicago.
Over the past two years, Streeterville has been bursting at the seams with economic investment and job creation. During this time, we’ve seen a significant increase in new “flagship” retail store openings in Streeterville, including: Walgreens and Ghirardelli Chocolate in the historic Wrigley Building; the AT&T Experience Store and Under Armour at 600 N. Michigan; Verizon Wireless and H&M at 840 N. Michigan; and, most recently, the Japanese retailer UNIQLO’s global flagship store at 830 N. Michigan Ave.

our neighborhood. In 2015 Northwestern Medicine opened their new Outpatient Care Pavilion at 259 E. Erie. Northwestern University broke ground on their worldclass biomedical research building. And ‘RIC’, the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, is well underway with its construction of their new Ability Institute, which will be a cutting edge hospital. Streeterville’s institutions attract 9,000 students and over 13,000 employees. The new hospitals and research centers are expected to increase these numbers significantly over the next 5 years.
treeterville has been witnessing a steadily growing real estate market since 2011. This year, however, was a significant year. New developments are happening across all markets from apartments to condos, institutions, restaurants, hotels and even large-scale infrastructure projects. All these developments are contributing to making Streeterville a more vibrant, diverse and livable place. As a result of all these developments, the population of Streeterville is continually growing. With close to 1,000 new units on the market in 2015 and over 2,000 coming in the next two years, Streeterville’s population of 29,000 is expected to grow by 13% over the next 5 years. This wave of new development is also redefining new corridors in the neighborhood like Grand Avenue, Illinois Street and Ontario Street where most of the new development is occurring. These corridors are attracting new restaurants, bars, entertainment and shopping attractions. As a result, more jobs are being created in Streeterville and more people will be commuting to our neighborhood to add to the 65,000 people that currently commute here for work on a daily basis. Institutional developments are also contributing to the overall growth of Streeterville and attracting more talent from around the world to
streeterville CHAMBER OF COMMERCE IL-STR-CW-15 NEW.indd 14
Large infrastructure projects underway will also enhance the growth we are experiencing in Streeterville. The redevelopment of Navy Pier with a new exciting and modern look will attract more visitors. It will be completed in 2016, just in time for Navy Pier’s 100th Anniversary celebrations. Construction of the Flyover Bridge has begun and the new bike path is starting to take shape. Finally, new transit solutions that will increase connectivity between Streeterville, major transit hubs and tourist attractions are in the planning stage. The development that happened in 2015 has contributed to changing the face of our neighborhood and 2016 is expected to see more growth and more positive change to strengthen Streeterville as a world-class neighborhood.

COMMUNITY BANKING AT ITS BEST! For most banks, success is about how many accounts they can open, how quickly they can move customers through the teller line, or how many loans they can close. We’re different than most. And, we have different measures of success. Did we do all we could to make every customer interaction a pleasant one? Are we making this community better? Are we making a difference to this area? These are lofty goals, but they are ones we’re always striving for because, as a true community bank, we know these are our responsibilities. You’ll get great financial tools when you bank with us, but we don’t stop there. We’re more than just a bank.

TOURISM Building excitement with every step
N
avy Pier is the gem in Streeterville’s crown. It is the Number One tourist attraction in the entire Midwest, attracting between eight and nine million visitors annually, according to Nick Shields, Director of Communications for Navy Pier, Inc.
The former Gateway Park at the west end of the Pier is in the process of being renovated. A part of the renovations will include an interactive water fountain which will be converted into an ice skating rink in the winter. Similar to the water feature at Millennium Park, the ways in which the water will run in the new fountain will be able to be changed by computer, Shields said.
But, as they say, you can never stop improving if you want to remain at the pinnacle. So Navy Pier is currently re-imagining itself with a huge, several-phase renovation program in recognition of the Pier’s 100th anniversary this year.
The park is now being called “Polk Bros. Park,” in honor of a $20 million gift from the family of the former appliance store moguls who were seeking to secure the family’s legacy in Chicago.
“Navy Pier is already an incredible destination, well-known for hosting such important events as the Tall Ships (which arrive here once every three years), Winter Wonderfest, Neighborhoods of the World which celebrates the many communities of Chicago, the Flower and Garden Show, Expo Chicago (an art exhibition), fireworks and multiple parties every New Year’s Eve and the world-famous Fourth of July celebration and fireworks display,” Shields explained. “But we want to elevate Navy Pier into the status of a truly world-class public space.”
The south dock, which most people know as the main walkway on the Pier, has been cleared of accumulated clutter. Trees, planters and paver bricks have been added in its place to give the dock a more park-like feeling. Kiosks with a uniform appearance have replaced the hodgepodge of kiosks that once dotted the south dock and multiple vendors now operate out of each structure.
Phase I of the renovations will cost $115 million and is being funded through bonds; borrowed money is being used to purchase a newer, larger and more weather-resistant Ferris Wheel; and Navy Pier is soliciting corporate and philanthropic gifts for the rest of the planned work.
streeterville CHAMBER OF COMMERCE IL-STR-CW-15 NEW.indd 16
“This allows for more connectivity to the water. People want to see Lake Michigan when they come to the Pier and now they can get closer than ever before,” Shields explained. In addition, the famous Ferris Wheel was removed in October and this

winter it is being replaced by a taller, state-of-the-art Wheel which will hold more people. The gondolas on the new Ferris Wheel will be enclosed and will be able to hold 10 seated customers, compared to the nearly six riders the old gondolas could accommodate, according to Shields. And the Wheel itself will be 200 feet high which is 50 feet higher than its predecessor. The new Wheel is expected to be in place by the summer of 2016.
The Pier has also recruited a host of new local restaurants in a bid to give visitors to the Pier an authentic Chicago culinary experience. Among those new eateries are three Lettuce Entertain You restaurants, DMK Burger, Giordano’s, Freshii’s, Goddess and the Baker and Brown Sugar Bakery.

Announcements about enhancements to retail offerings at the Pier will also be coming soon, Shields said. Other additions and renovations in the works include a renovation of the Crystal Gardens atrium space which sports beautiful palm trees and other flora and is a popular space for weddings and events; and the construction of a five-story, 225-room boutique hotel at the east end of the Pier, near its famous Festival Hall. It is planned to conform architecturally to the look of the rest of the Pier structures and is expected to capitalize on incredible views of the Chicago skyline, offered from this vantage point. Pier officials are exploring the feasibility of a hotel of this type with interested developers. Navy Pier officials anticipate that, once completed, these improvements will boost tourism by an extra two million visitors a year.

Timothy O’Toole’s has a great selection of both and goes all-out with their Chicago spirit by hosting the Super Bowl, fights, baseball, basketball, football and soccer. Chef Bistro Burger is another place that serves mouthwatering burgers. You can catch a game there too. If you looking for Indian flair we have Indian Garden, an excellent exploration of India’s culture through its cuisine. They offer a daily lunch buffet and reopen for dinner. Do not forget about Chicago’s famous deep dish pizza. Pizzeria Uno features legendary Chicagostyle deep dish pizza since 1943. The story begins in Chicago when Ike Sewell developed deep dish pizza and opened a new type of restaurant at the corner of Ohio and Wabash. It is still going strong and people continue to stand and wait for their delicious pizza. It is worth the wait! Each of the above restaurants offer private dining and can host private parties.

odd Stein remembers as a fifth-grader getting the opportunity to choose a business where he could work for a day. He chose to work in a restaurant. “I wanted to learn how to make French onion soup,” he recalled. Stein said he saw cooks as a secret society of magicians. There was something mysterious about them and what they created back in the kitchen, he added.

it be a glass of wine, a cocktail or a beer. Among the small dishes that are wildly popular, Stein said, is the crab toast, sourdough bread that is topped with an avocado puree, jumbo lump crab and pickled fresno chiles. “It’s crab, avocado and toast. It’s pretty basic,” he said. “But people go crazy for it.”
“I still feel that way,” Stein adds with a laugh. Stein now strives to create magic for diners as the corporate executive chef at The Windsor, a neighborhood American grill which opened last July on Huron Street. “We wanted it to be this great little hideaway of a restaurant in Streeterville that served comfortable food, food that really got you excited about eating,” Stein said. “I call it great food that goes with whiskey and wine.” Stein said some of the dishes are variations of dishes that diners like served at the other restaurants he helps to oversee as part of the Four Star Restaurant Group. And some, he said, are original dishes that offer diners a snack when they want something to accompany their drink, whether

that is slow cooked for hours and is served atop couscous mixed with dried fruits and a parsley and almond relish. Stein said they also feature an incredible rotisserie, which they use to prepare the half chicken, doublecut pork chop as well as the porcini rubbed filet and the prime rib. Stein said all the restaurants within the Four Star Restaurant Group serve brunch and do brunch well, adding brunch is part of their company DNA. Rotisserie chicken hash and a variety of omelets and pancakes are some of the usual favorites. But they also offer the unexpected, utilizing the rotisserie to prepare a single pork chop with eggs, hash browns and slow roasted tomatoes.
He said the crispy fried clams is a dish that most are familiar with but may think cannot be executed well. But they use a clam that works well and coats it in a spicy batter to create a great snack food.
“We want people to go, ‘I want to go there for dinner, but I’m going to be nearby for shopping so I want to go there for brunch and have equally as a good time,’” he said.
For those wanting a nice meal, the pork shoulder features a Moroccan spice rub
As the colder weather approaches the
Chicago area, Stein plans to create the warm, comforting dishes that also will be delicious for diners to enjoy. “With some dishes, we may have lighter accompaniments so it’s not over the top heavy, but there are the usual suspects, polenta, braised meats, things that keep you warm during the cold time of the year,” he said. Stein remembers back to his childhood and remembers Streeterville as a special place. It is quite special to be a part of that neighborhood today. “There is something about that side of town that is always very welcoming and always a very wonderful place to be whether you’re going shopping or going to a hotel or going to eat,” he said. “There is something very glamorous about it to me.” “So to be a part of that is really a wonderful thing,” he said.

hef Jose Gonzalez agrees that Chicago is known to feature many incredible steakhouses across the city. But as the chef at Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse and Wine Bar, he has big goals ... He wants to be the top steakhouse in the Windy City. “If we’re not providing excellent food and we’re not providing the best we can give and we’re not performing to our highest standards, it doesn’t matter how many people you bring in because you can bring them in once and they’ll never come back again, he said. “We’re working hard to produce perfect food, to produce perfect execution of our steak but also offer a lot of other great dishes on our menu. Gonzalez began his culinary career at Fleming’s, working as a sous chef and building experience to serve as a chef at locations in Florida. But after hearing about an opening at Fleming’s in Chicago, he wanted to make the move. “It’s a challenging restaurant. It’s a bigger restaurant. It’s one of the few two-floor restaurants that we have. I wanted that challenge, he said. Gonzalez explained they strive to serve the best meal to their guests. That is why

they offer the finest USDA Prime beef and certified Angus beef. “We serve a variety of steaks to accommodate to everyone. Some like dry-aged. Some like wet-aged. Some people like filet. Some people like ribeye. We offer all of those, he said. Their most popular product is their filet, the leanest and most tender piece of beef. “We also have our bone-in ribeye. In Chicago, you come to a steakhouse, you order a big steak, he said with a laugh. “You order the bone-in ribeye. You order the porterhouse. A porterhouse is composed of a filet and a strip, so you get the best of both worlds.

Their menu includes the double breast of chicken with a white wine, mushroom, leek and thyme sauce. They also offer sea bass, shrimp, lobster tails and crab legs. Appetizers vary from calamari to pan-crisped pork belly. Gonzalez said being a successful restaurant means being happy to accommodate guests. “At Fleming’s we like to customize dishes for the guest. We will come to the table and offer to make something special for you, he said, adding they offer vegetarian options as well as offer a gluten-free menu to accommodate preferences.
For those, however, who do not choose to order a steak, Gonzalez added Fleming’s offers many flavorful options. “My favorite item on the menu right now is the pork chop, he said of the dish, which features an apples and jicama salad and is topped with creole mustard glaze.
Gonzalez said he loves working in a restaurant because it’s an ever-changing environment. Part of learning and changing,
he acknowledged, is listening to his guests. “People will ask, ‘have you ever tried this?’ and I will say, ‘maybe not, but I’ll try it now that you’ve mentioned it,’ he said. “I’m learning new things every day from other chefs in the company but also from books, from trends and from our guests as well. Fleming’s is known not only for providing exceptional steaks and other entrees but also offering a variety of wines to pair with each meal, many wines offered by the glass. Working as well as living in Streeterville, Gonzalez said providing to Chicago is not just about feeding them within the restaurant. He wants Fleming’s to be an integral part of the community by not only hosting special events such as food and wine tastings but also helping the community through events such as the Great Chicago Steak Out. The restaurant also donates food to various charities.  “It’s all about being involved in the community, he said.

rom the terra cotta floors to the ingredients imported from Tuscany, the Coco Pazzo Café strives to bring its diners to Tuscany ... without a passport. The Coco Pazzo Café is a casual Tuscan cafe that has fed the Streeterville neighborhood for 20 years, featuring a menu that changes with the seasons and a vibrancy that mimics the cafes found along the streets in Florence. Bringing the countryside of Tuscany to diners is David Jahnke. “Our go-to phrase is the simpleness of it and the trueness of it,” he said. Jahnke has worked 27 years at Chicago restaurants, starting his career at another Streeterville restaurant, Spiaggia Restaurant. He’s also worked several seasons at the Stadium Club in the former Comiskey Park, Ditka’s steakhouse restaurant and the Italian Village. For him, Chicago is a wonderful place to work. “I love the hustle and bustle and vibrancy of working downtown, the clientele and getting to know the people in every restaurant I’ve worked,” he said. The Coco Pazzo Café follows in the footsteps of another successful Chicago restaurant, Coco Pazzo restaurant, which opened in 1992

in the River North area. Open for 20 years, Jahnke said the cafe has an appeal because it also is a slice of Tuscany but is rustic and casual compared to the upscale, fine dining experience at the original. Walking into the cafe, Jahnke promises a similar decor to what you’d find within the Tuscan restaurants in Italy. There are the terra cotta floors, murals across the walls as well as the enjoyment of alfresco dining, which translates to open air in Italian, in the summer.
oil and prosciutto, all from Italy. But they also hold in high regard using seasonal and sustainable ingredients from the Chicago area including local produce and meats. “We do take pride in sourcing local vegetables and our different meats as well,” he said.
“The doors open on both sides of the restaurant, so the whole restaurant opens up to the air. Even if you’re not sitting directly outside, you can still get that nice summer breeze. It’s really a beautiful restaurant,” he said. At Coco Pazzo Café, he said they pride themselves not only in demonstrating good techniques of roasting, grilling and braising, but also using ingredients key to Tuscan cuisine such as rosemary, sage and thyme. He said they also import ingredients such as olive

Among the favorites at the cafe is a classic but simple starter, the caprese, which features fresh mozzarella, basil and tomatoes topped with a balsamic glaze. But among their entrees, one of the favorites is a more labor intensive process to prepare, the lasagna. “It’s a real labor of love,” he said of the dish that features layers of bolognese sauce incorporating roasted meats, wine, herbs, a bechamel cream sauce and fresh pasta layers. “It’s a real step-by-step, two-day process.”
What truly makes the dishes authentic and memorable is Jahnke’s mission to choose ingredients carefully and let them shine. This includes choosing plum tomatoes he imports from Italy, which offer a sweet, tanginess flavor, and the ricotta and mozzarella cheeses made with buffalo milk, which offers a creamier texture and richness. He added, “We predominantly make most of our pasta here in house. We have a guy where that is all he does from the sheets of lasagna to the mezzaluna, which is a seasonal ravioli I have on our menu right now. It’s stuffed with mushrooms and ricotta cheese.” Many of the pasta dishes have become favorites at the Coco Pazzo Café from the homemade potato gnocchi tossed in tomato sauce and ricotta cheese and the spaghetti AOP. In addition to offering good food, Jahnke said just as important is providing good service and getting to know people who live in Streeterville and come into his cafe.
