alter P. Temple was born on June 7, 1869. Temple was the son of Pliny Fisk Temple, who settled in Pueblo de Los Angeles in 1841. Pliny married Antonia Marquerita Workman, daughter of William Workman, a prominent settler in the San Gabriel Valley.

In 1850, Pliny was granted the La Merced Rancho 12 miles east of Los Angeles, where he made his home. The site was near the original San Gabriel Mission, founded by the Franciscan Fathers. During the years at La Merced, 11 children were born to Pliny and his wife. Their tenth child was Walter.

In the 1870s, due to drought conditions and other family financial failures, Lucky Baldwin foreclosed on a loan and took back the land.

On November 28, 1903, Walter Temple married Laurenza Gonzalez, a descendant of early Spanish-Californian families. Walter purchased 400 acres four miles east of San Gabriel, which had been part of Lucky Baldwin’s vast Rancho Santa Anita. The site soon thereafter became known as the Town of Temple, and a great American community was born.

Envisioning a community where people of moderate income could afford to own their own homes, Walter Temple divided the area into lots and laid out the park facing Las Tunas Drive. Realizing the Town of Temple would not grow unless it was fully integrated with the rest of the valley and region, Temple successfully petitioned the Pacific Electric

Railway Company to extend its Los Angelesto-Alhambra San Gabriel line to a depot adjacent to Temple City Park. Residents and merchants attributed the steady growth of the town to this extension of the legendary “Red Car,” which crisscrossed southern California long before the freeways were built.

In 1936, the town was officially designated as Temple City by the local post office, but remained a city in name only until after the post-World War II population explosion and incorporation of the community on May 25, 1960. Walter Temple, who was also instrumental in development of the Montebello oilfields and construction of many buildings in Los Angeles and San Gabriel, died on November 13, 1938, but his legacy is a desirable California city that values hard work, community and family. d d d

Chamber History The Chamber of Commerce became a chartered organization on March 1, 1924.

For meetings, its members used a building at the southeast corner of Las Tunas Drive and Temple City Boulevard. A local newspaper reported: “Activities of the Chamber will be confined to creating a civic spirit and obtaining those things for the community which can only be obtained through united efforts.”

Originally, business owners were against incorporating the town and wished “to maintain a clean, rural community unattached to any big city government.” The Chamber supported this point of view, although it did encourage such cosmopolitan advances as initiating foot-service mail delivery and bus service. It opposed parking meters and a name change of Las Tunas Drive to Arrow Highway. The Chamber sponsored the first Camellia Festival and continues to support the city’s signature event.

After years of working with the county and state, Chamber members reconsidered their former opposition to incorporation. Without incorporation, the Chamber found itself fulfilling many of the functions normally provided by local government, and additionally, there was the possibility of an increase in county taxes without an increase in services or representation. Therefore, after a 13-year struggle, Temple City was incorporated.

Incorporation of Temple City only enhanced the role of the Chamber of Commerce, and it has remained an aggressive advocate for the interests of the business community, actively participating in redevelopment efforts and supporting and sponsoring many events and charitable causes. In 1944, the Women’s Club of Temple City held a contest to choose a flower and slogan for the community. Mrs. Ralph Saunders submitted the winning

entry: “Temple City, Home of the Camellias.”

The following year, Sharon Ray Pearson, only eight months old, was crowned “Queen” and rode in an open car down Las Tunas Drive as Camp Fire Girls handed out Camellia blossoms to spectators. This was the genesis of the Camellia Festival.

The Chamber of Commerce began promoting the city’s new slogan in 1946, as about 150 members of local youth groups participated in a parade. A “Queen” and two “Princesses” were honored, and a drum and bugle corps entertained the crowd. With this success, more ambitious plans were made for the following year. In 1947, the Chamber of Commerce chose to use the festival to promote its commitment to youth, which has always been central to the event. More elaborate entertainment was provided, and merchants donated gifts to children. In 1948, a theme was chosen—“Jewels of Temple City”—and youth groups constructed a variety of floats for the parade. Also added was a carnival and coronation pageant. The profits were used to create a Temple City Youth Center.

As the years have passed, the Camellia Festival has dramatically grown in size and popularity, and more than 5,000 children now participate in the annual parade.

Entertainment and prizes abound, and service clubs and organizations take great pride in this venerable and meaningful event. The festival, celebrating and supporting the community’s youth, continues

lthough there are similarities, the Miss Temple City Ambassador Program is not so much a beauty contest as it is a partnership with the young women of the community. The pageant is a means of providing Temple City and the Chamber of Commerce with three exceptional young ladies to represent the community at a variety of business, social and cultural events.

It is an outstanding opportunity for these young ladies to participate in their community and gain valuable experience in public speaking, organizing charity events, meeting dignitaries and developing social skills that will serve them later in life. Lasting friendships are formed while educational opportunities and career plans are explored. The Chamber is

committed to making this the best possible experience for all contestants. Of course, the quality of the experience is only as good as what you put in. Miss Temple City and the Honor Court Members are expected to participate in a rigorous calendar of community event that includes: d Camellia Festival Coronation & Parade d City Christmas Event d Concerts in the Park d Business Grand Openings d Monthly Social Mixers d Speaking Engagements at Service Organizations d Temple City Chamber of Commerce Installation Dinner d Other Public Appearances as Scheduled As you can see, this one-year commitment can be challenging. We recognize school, family and church commitments, as well as participation in the Tournament of Roses Court competition, as acceptable activities as long as Chamber functions are attended as required. A year serving as Miss Temple City or as a member of the Honor Court is a rewarding experience that prepares a young lady for future success in academics, the business world, government and life in general.

ocated in Los Angeles County, Temple City lies in the western portion of the San Gabriel Valley along with the municipalities of Arcadia, Rosemead, Monterey Park, San Marino and San Gabriel. The city sits at an elevation of 400 feet but offers dramatic vistas of the majestic San Gabriel Mountains just to the north.

The municipality, which encompasses 4.01 square miles, is just 14 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles, a convenient distance for both business and cultural purposes.

Temple City is readily accessible from major southern California transportation corridors, including I-10 (San Bernardino Freeway), I-210 (Foothill Freeway) and I605 (San Gabriel River Freeway), as well as the famous Route 66.

Local public transit services are provided and maintained by the Temple City Parks and Recreation Department. Dial-A-Ride is a low-cost service available for people aged 60 or above and for anybody with disabilities. It provides rides for any purpose throughout Temple City and to Arcadia, El Monte, Rosemead or San Gabriel, and to destinations such as Westfield Santa Anita shopping center, government facilities, churches, adult day centers and convalescent homes.

Connecting Temple City with the entire southland and beyond is the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). The agency operates bus and rail lines that transport riders virtually everywhere in greater Los Angeles, as well as offering connections to Amtrak trains at Union Station in downtown L.A. Passes and tokens are available at reduced rates for residents of Temple City. Within an hour’s drive is Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), home to nearly 90 passenger and cargo airlines. It is the fifth-busiest passenger airport in the world, and both businesses and residents appreciate LAX’s convenient location, state-of-the-art facilities and exceptional sea, air and land connections. Also convenient—ideal for shorter flights—is Bob Hope Airport in Burbank, offering hassle-free connections to destinations throughout the U.S. The Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach serve southern California and are critical to the economy of the entire Pacific Coast. The Port of Los Angeles encompasses 7,500 acres and 43 miles of waterfront, and includes 27 cargo terminals and extensive intermodal facilities. coach of a university basketball team in China. In Japan, he coached the Shodai University team in Osaka, and in Korea at the University of Korea in Seoul.

Recently, he was hired to train and coach at Xiamen University in the Chinese province of Fujian.

During the past few years, Chinese athletic programs have been sending some of their top basketball prospects to the U.S. to live with Coach Marquis and his wife, Shirley, learning English and, of course, improving their basketball skills. The first Chinese player to arrive was Max Zhang, a 7’0” center, sent here three years ago to study English and to be trained by Coach Marquis. After living with Coach Marquis and his family for about a year-and-a-half, Max grew taller—he now stands 7’3”—and gained about 40 pounds. Now you can see Max playing for the University of California at Berkeley, one of the premier teams in the nation. Max is only a sophomore with a full four-year scholarship, and his college coach, Mike Montgomery, said he is expecting great things out of Max during the next two seasons. After that he will have a superb Cal-Berkeley education and tremendous professional sports opportunities.

Max often returns to his old “Play Smarter Basketball Classes” in Temple City to help out the current kids in Coach Marquis’s basketball classes.

This year, Coach Marquis has several new players living with his family, and one of them is his 6’9” ex-university player and coach from Xiamen University, Dongyuan Xie. His new American name is Duke and he came to the U.S. to help Coach Marquis develop the kids in the local “Play Smarter Basketball Classes.” Currently living with the coach is perhaps one of the top current prospects from China—a young 6’9” 12-year-old named Guo Runze. His new American name is Ricky, and he is expected to grow as tall as NBA superstar Yao Ming. He was sent here in hopes of following in the footsteps of Yao, along with his 7’3” friend Max Zhang from Cal Berkeley. Currently Ricky is only an 8th grader at San Gabriel Academy, but in mid-May he will become a teenager. Right now, nobody seems to believe the 6’9”-tall kid is just 12 years-old!

You can find these players helping out at the local co-ed “Play Smarter Basketball Classes.” The classes are held each Saturday and Sunday yearround—Saturday mornings at Church of the Nazarene in Temple City; afternoons at the Salvation Army in Pasadena; and on Sunday afternoons at the San Gabriel Academy.

xcellent educational opportunities exist for residents of Temple City. Area K-12 students are served by four awardwinning school districts and several private schools.

Temple City Unified School District (TCUSD) is one of the top 10 school districts in Los Angeles County and received the 2010 Spotlight Governor’s Physical Fitness Challenge Award for Los Angeles County. TCUSD serves approximately 5,600 students and maintains four elementary schools, one intermediate school, one high school, an alternative high school and an adult/community education program. TCUSD’s mission is to “provide a rigorous education in a nurturing environment…students are empowered to maximize their learning potential in a diverse setting.” TCUSD is a student-centered and community-oriented district committed to providing a safe environment and high-quality education. The district’s schools have been honored with several prestigious awards. Emperor and La Rosa Elementary Schools received the 2010 California Distinguished School Award. Also, Temple City High School is eligible to apply for a 2011 California Distinguished School Award. Temple City High School (grades 9-12) received America’s Best High Schools 2010 Silver Recognition from U.S. News & World Report magazine. The Temple City Alternative Education Program (Dr. Doug Sears Learning Center, Junior Academy and Independent Study) provides students with opportunities to complete their education in a personalized setting.

Arcadia Unified School District (AUSD) operates six elementary schools, three middle schools and one high school, as well as preschool and daycare programs. In addition to foundation courses, the district provides elective classes, courses, vocational or school program guidance, career counseling, summer school and unique specialty programs such as robotics and educational technology. AUSD believes that to help students succeed, families and communities

must work together, encouraging students to “…think and reason, develop ownership for their own lifelong learning, respect diversity and be contributing members of society.”

El Monte City School District claims 17 schools and a community education center. The district’s mission is to “…educate all students to develop skills, knowledge and attitudes to be responsible, productive and fulfilled individuals able to succeed ethically in a democratic society.” Many of its schools have podcast feeds showcasing everything from student performances and lunch menus to messages from the superintendent.

Additionally, the district makes it a priority to teach students about the benefits of good nutrition and healthy lifestyles. Recently, Columbia Elementary School received a Bronze Award from the Healthy Schools program, along with a congratulatory visit from former President Bill Clinton and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Rosemead School District (RSD) provides “quality education, longstanding traditions, outstanding staff and excellent community support.” The district maintains five schools serving students enrolled in kindergarten through eighth grade.

The Internet in Your Pocket ccording to a new report from the Pew Research Internet & American Life Project Survey, a third of Internet users have accessed information wirelessly at home, at work, or while “out and about.”

Wireless devices with which people have logged onto the Internet include laptop computers, PDAs, web-enabled cell phones and smartphones (i.e., BlackBerrys, Treos).

The Pew survey results indicated that a quarter of all Internet users have a cell phone that connects to the internet wirelessly; one in eight use PDAs to make that wireless connection. Some 40 percent of Internet users under age 30 who connect to the Internet via laptop computer do so wirelessly; another 40 percent use their web-enabled cell phones; and 17 percent use wireless PDAs.

The “New Convergence” 2007 At the 2007 Las Vegas Consumer Electronics Show, Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), spoke about the “new convergence” taking place, forecasting that the consumer electronics industry will soar to $155 billion in 2007.

An Internet Week survey found that traffic, gas prices and irritation with waiting in line are driving consumers to spend more time shopping online than ever before.

Another report indicates that 87 percent of consumers research products online prior to making a purchase. Consistently growing numbers of older adult consumers are regularly buying products online.

One in 10 consumers internationally now buys products and services through their cell phones. The onset of greater imaging capabilities through cell phones and other wireless handhelds will also boost sales.

Nokia’s new Ad Service will help advertisers target messages through mobile services and applications.

Converged communcations, mobile media, wireless, WiFi, WAP — the runaway train hurdling through the digital frontier shows no signs of slowing down; marketers are jumping on board at every stop.

A Nokia spokesman noted that, “as advertisers struggle to reach personalized targeting with traditional media such as print and TV, mobile advertising is becoming an increasingly attractive channel for brands.”

The World is Going Mobile

Technology is so advanced that, as the CEO of Acuity Mobile points out, ads can be delivered instantly to web-enabled cell phone users who have agreed to accept them, when and where they expect. A consumer who has approved mobile ads from Jiffy Lube, for example, will receive one as he’s approaching a participating location — AND let him know if he’s due for an oil change!

The 24/7, worldwide connectivity available through these new technologies reiterates what we already know: we’re going mobile in almost every aspect of their lives. Consumers are spending less time with traditional media; businesses are seeking ways to reach those consumers through new media.

For example, Gen Y young adults, (ages 18-26) spend 25 percent less time watching TV than Gen X, and 50 percent less time than Baby Boomers.

It’s predicted that well over $500 billion LESS will be spent on network television advertising this year.

The availability of such tools will spur greater investment in new convergence marketing media, and likely grow beyond the dollars invested in traditional media as these new communications platforms and technologies emerge.

he City Council of Temple City consists of five members, each elected by the people at-large for four-year terms of office. The council establishes law and policy in an open, transparent environment that encourages public participation at every stage. Each year, the council selects one of its members to serve as mayor and one as mayor pro-tempore. The mayor presides over council meetings and represents the city at various civic functions, while the mayor pro-tempore serves in the mayor’s absence. City Council meetings are held on the first and third Tuesday of each month.

Since 1960, fire and medical emergency services have been provided by the County of Los Angeles Fire Station 47. Along with fire protection and safety services, the County of Los Angeles Fire Department offers many public programs to educate and assist citizens in handling major emergencies.
