Joint base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst is the Department of Defense’s only tri-service joint base. The joint base officially stood up on Oct. 1, 2009.

The Joint Base is located 18 miles southeast of Trenton and includes 42,000 contiguous acres, which spans more than 20 miles east to west. It is bordered by two of the largest counties in New Jersey-Ocean and Burlington – which include 10 townships or boroughs.

The joint base is home to many DOD missions to include: the 99th Regional Support Command; U.S. Air Force Expeditionary Center, Naval Air Systems Command; 108th Wing; 87th Air Base Wing; 2nd Brigade, 75th Division; Marine Aircraft Group 49; 72nd Field Artillery Brigade, 77th Sustainment Brigade; 78th Training Brigade; 174th Infantry Brigade; 305th Air Mobility Wing; 514th Air Mobility Wing; 621st Contingency Response Wing; Army Support Activity-For Dix; U.S. Army Communications and Electronics Research and Development Center; Federal Correctional Institute; and Naval Operational Support Center.

Overview of missions: Air Force Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst is an Air Mobility Center of Excellence projecting every mobility mission except air drops from the joint base. The capabilities residing at the joint base extend total force global air mobility through the movement of troops and cargo in its C-17 Globemaster III, KC-10 Extender and KC-135 Stratotanker aircraft from the 305th Air Mobility Wing, 514th Air Mobility Wing and 108th Wing. JB MDL is also home to the 621st Contingency Response Wing, which is highly-specialized in training and rapidly deploying personnel to quickly open airfields and establish, expand, sustain and coordinate air mobility operations. The USAF Expeditionary Center is the Air Force’s Center of Excellence for advanced expeditionary combat support training and education.

The 87th Air Base Wing is the host unit for the joint base and provides expeditionary combat support to Airmen and Sailors in support of worldwide combat and humanitarian operations. It also provides all installation management functions across the joint base. The joint base is also home to a C-17 Weapons School and the sole AMC Test and Evaluation Squadron.

Army JB MDL is one of four U.S. Army power projection platforms, conducting both institutional and mobilization training. Since the start of Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom, the Army has mobilized more than 120,000 service members through the mobilization training center located at JB MDL. The 99th Regional Support command, which is headquartered at the joint base, provides operations support to all Army Reserve Soldiers, units, facilities and equipment for Reserve units in the Northeast Region of the United States. The 72nd Field Artillery Brigade plans, coordinates and enables post-mobilization by coordinating and overseeing the predeployment planning process for service members. The 174th Infantry Brigade – sister brigade of the 72nd – executes the training and

validation process, preparing service members to deploy, fight and win. The Army Support Activity-For Dix supports the facilities and services that enable the training, mobilization, deployment and redeployment of Reserve, Active and Interagency personnel. The joint base is also home to an Army ROTC Brigade, a Recruiting Battalion and the Army Communications and Electronics Research and Development Center.

Navy The U.S. Navy conducts advanced research

and development programs at JB MDL in support of air platform operations worldwide. The joint base is home to the Naval Air Systems Command, which provides a critical link between worldwide Naval Aviation and Navy aircraft carrier battle group. It is the Navy’s engineering support activity for Aircraft Launch and Recovery Equipment and is responsible for maintaining fleet support and infusing modern technology across the entire spectrum of equipment needed to launch, land and maintain aircraft from ships at sea. The research and development of full-scale aircraft carrier catapult and arresting gear are conducted on one of the joint base’s active runways. In addition, three active test tracks for aircraft landing simulations, hangars, advanced engineering laboratories, training facilities and a complex of manufacturing and prototyping facilities call JB MDL home. JB MDL is the development site for the next generation of aircraft carrier launch facilities. The Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System land based test site is the only fully-capable side for testing future aircraft launch systems to operate from aircraft carriers. TO OCEAN COUNTY Article written by the late Robert LaTorre – 1931-2010 Prior to 1850 the area we know as Ocean County was part of Monmouth County. Then the local residents, upset by the fact that they were paying county taxes and getting very little in return, petitioned the state legislature to separate from Monmouth and Ocean County as born. A look at the map shows that it is the second-largest county in the state, with a rather unusual triangular shape. The county stretches from New Egypt in the northwest to Point Pleasant Beach in the northeast and south to Little Egg Harbor. The original townships were created by simply drawing a line from west to the ocean. Some of those lines followed natural boundaries like the rivers and creeks that flow in that direction.

Today many changes have taken place with natural population centers subdividing and creating 33 townships and boroughs, each is as unique as its name, and despite many attempts to consolidate, they remain independent and proud of their “home rule.” Here we showcase just a few of the great stops along the way through Ocean County.

TOMS RIVER TOWNSHIP Toms River is the county seat and home of the original 1850 court house. Toms River is the largest in population and truly the hub of the county. Route 37 long ago replaced Main Street as the real main street, not just of Toms River but of the county as well. Toms River also maintains some of its original ocean beachfront including places with names like Ortley and Normandy Beaches, which are not towns but wonderful neighborhoods. The bayfront area is dotted with marinas as well as one time cottages now expanded into upscale year round residences. It is home to Ocean County College, the Garden State Philharmonic, the Little League World Champions and national Cheerleaders.

ISLAND HEIGHTS BOROUGH Originally founded as a Methodist summer camp meeting, Island Heights was discovered by John Wanamaker of department store fame. He turned it into a summer retreat for his employees and made it so popular that there was once a railroad spur which crossed the river and brought trains directly from Philadelphia to the borough. JACKSON TOWNSHIP Covering the massive northeast corner of the county, Jackson was, for a long time, sparsely settled. Six Flags, always known to locals as Great Adventure Amusement Park, put Jackson on the national map. However, few people know that most of the Navy Lakehurst facility lies within the Township. Recently Jackson has been discovered as an ideal place from which to commute to points north, and residential development has blossomed. Driving north on Route 571 offers a view of Saint Vladimir church with its massive onion shaped spire that would be right at home in downtown Moscow.

LAKEHURST BOROUGH

SEASIDE HEIGHTS BOROUGH

While only a tiny sliver of the Naval Air Warfare Center actually lies within the borough’s northern edge, it was the town’s name which became most closely associated with the Center. Lakehurst’s name was forever forged into world history with the loss of the Airship Hindenberg. But long before and after the tragedy, Lakehurst was an important airship center. The town still sports a navy blimp on its modest water tower. Much of the history is preserved in the Museum and since has undergone a major revitalization. Sometimes called the doughnut hole in Manchester Township, it is indeed completely surrounded by Manchester. But no one has ever called the base “Navy Manchester.”

“Home of Sun and Fun” reads the town motto, and that is exactly what it has been for almost a hundred years. It has been visited by more New Jerseyans than any other shore town. With less than a mile of boardwalk, it is what Jersey shore towns have always wanted to be. They say that the boardwalk in Seaside has a magical appeal, for some it is at the age of seven for others 17, and, for a selected few, the magic never ends, even at 70. Each year the town has added new attractions, night clubs, water parks and amusement rides. There is something for everyone in Seaside Heights including a fine white sandy beach.

LAKEWOOD TOWNSHIP Once home to 100 winter resort hotels, Lakewood has become the industrial hub of Ocean County. In addition, it hosts our minor league BlueClaws baseball team. It was discovered by the wealthiest of New Yorkers, including JD Rockefeller, and grew into a major vacation resort well into the 1940s. None of the hotels remain, but Georgian Court College occupies the old Gould estate, and the Rockefeller property is now Ocean County Park. Lakewood is home to the largest Yeshiva in the world. Once undeveloped land has become a massive industrial park whose businesses employ thousands of workers.

MANTOLOKING BOROUGH Here is a town unique unto itself, stretching for two miles along the Atlantic beachfront is lined with massive summer homes. A town which boasts of having no businesses, it has offered seclusion and privacy for everyone from vice presidents to motion picture stars as well as some of the country’s wealthiest people. Even now, many of the homes are owned by the rich and famous. Only the town officials know for sure, and they are not telling. While the drive down Route 35 gives some sense of the magnitude of the homes, it really takes a boat ride down the Atlantic coast to get a full measure of just what Mantoloking really is.

SEASIDE PARK BOROUGH Seaside Park is a quiet beach town for vacationers as well as residents. Realtors offer a wide variety of beautiful homes/condos/cottages for rental or purchase. The dunes are protected and the boardwalk is only at the north end of town where it is bordered by Seaside Heights, and on the south by the beautiful Island Beach State Park – a vacationer favorite. Seaside Park is a favorite destination for vacation seekers and families who want a home-away-fromhome, as well as the natural beauty enjoyed by its year-round residents. This Jersey Shore beach community on the Barnegat Peninsula offers wonderful sites, scenes and activities for people of all ages and interests – beautiful, long pristine beaches and a mile-long boardwalk filled with games, rides, attractions and wonderful top quality restaurants. Seaside Park is the vacation resort that has everything – swimming, fishing, activities, restaurants and solitude when you want it.

TUCKERTON BOROUGH It was once a bustling seaport named the third official port of entry for the fledgling United States, when both Philadelphia and New York were blockaded by the British. Tuckerton has never forgotten its heritage. Several years ago the dream of recreating the seaport came to life, and now it is the beginning of a tourist destination which is soon to be a major attraction. The history of

Tuckerton is filled with the lives of watermen who earned a hard living taking crabs, clams and oysters from the bay. All of that is recreated at the Tuckerton Seaport, the centerpiece of which is the reconstructed Tuckers Island Light which was washed into the sea. The entire town has come back to life around the opening of the museum. By far the best story is that of the clammers who, when the railroad shut down, equipped a flatbed rail car with a sail and took their catch to market. It was indeed called “Clam Town” till Mr. Tucker convinced the residents to rename it. That’s just a quick peek at a few of the 33 towns of Ocean County. One could spend a lifetime exploring them. This may just be the time to start. PLEASE NOTE: Due to the devastation of Hurricane Sandy many beach communities have suffered serious damage to homes and businesses but are currently in the process of rebuilding.
