Over the years, Tuolumne County, with its many attractions, has become more and more popular as a vacation playland. People come from all over the world to view the beauty of our landscape and relish the history of the Gold Rush era.

As locals, we sometimes take for granted this wonderful place in which we live. It’s always nice to pause, stop and think about this beautiful place and the lifestyle we all enjoy.

From Yosemite National Park to the Stanislaus National Forest, outdoor recreation abounds in Tuolumne County. When it comes to history, Columbia State Park is a preserved Gold Rush town that still thrives with local businesses, and in Jamestown, another active Gold Rush town, Railtown 1897 State Park keeps alive the history the railroad made during the early 1800s with train rides and Engine Number 3, the movie star locomotive.

Businesses of all types and sizes exist here in Tuolumne County.

Most popular is the “mom and pop” operation, which is a small storefront with few employees operated by the owners. There are entrepreneurs that have started their own small business of manufacturing to see it grow to providing products in 16 different countries. From there, larger retailers are evident with the likes of Walmart, Lowe’s and Kohl’s stores. The high-tech industry is not to be left out—Tuolumne County is home to a company that manufactures heating devices for computer chips and a software company that sells all over the world.

Once known for mineral extraction of gold and the resource of timber, changes have diminished these roles in the local economy—not to say they are forgotten. Gold is now a recreational activity for visitors as they pan in local streams for the rich, bright yellow nuggets that still flow. The forest continues to grow trees, and more and more it is being realized that local timber production puts many people to work rather than buying lumber from outside the country.

Education in the community is a source of pride for residents as our schools always perform above state and federal levels. To complement elementary and high schools, Columbia Community College provides two years of college classes in one of the most beautiful campuses in the state.

So whether you are here for vacation or working as a local resident, this land is your land; enjoy all the wonders it has to offer.

prospectors, Major Means and his brother Julius, took out $10,000 worth of gold in a claim of just 100 feet. They also discovered a quartz vein that yielded two-thirds of its weight in gold.

uolumne County was discovered in the early part of summer in 1848 when a party of Philadelphian miners came to Woods Creek. It is said that the countryside was one of the most picturesque in the world. Woods Creek was named after their leader Reverend James Woods. Others in the party were James Savage, J.H. Rider and Charles Bassett. They were searching for gold, which was plentiful in the first mining settlement of Woods Crossing. In fact, it was so plentiful that word spread quickly, bringing immigrants of every nationality including a group of Mexican miners who founded the Sonorian Camp.

The inhabitants of the area, which would be known as Sonora, were strictly of Spanish decent until the arrival of the first Americans, Keeler and R.S. Ham, who arrived in the spring of 1849.

In August of 1848 a San Franciscan lawyer, Colonel James, moved to Woods Creek, and Jamestown was founded. Colonel James became deep in debts he could not pay, which incurred such ill will of his neighbors that upon his departure, the name of Jamestown was dropped as revenge.

Although known for a short time as “American Camp,” the name proved to be too long. The people were used to “Jim Town,” and the name Jamestown was eventually revived. This was the same year in which Judge Tuttle arrived in Mormon Gulch and built the first log cabin in the county. This cabin became the nucleus of the village that would come to be known as Tuttletown. Neither of the latter were as notable as Jackass Gulch, a name which the accidental loss of a long-eared animal contributed. Despite the name, Jackass Gulch immediately took rank as one of the richest diggings yet struck. Lumps of gold weighing several ounces were a common occurrence, and it is said that two of the earliest

Numerous discoveries took place in the latter part of 1848, and the county rapidly filled with seekers of hidden treasures. Prospecting was now abundant and new places were discovered almost daily. With a population of about 500, the mortality rate was great, especially among the Mexican population, and it was with the idea of ending such suffering that the hospital was built and maintained. The first drugstore in Sonora, Dr. Strothers, opened in the fall of 1849 in the vicinity of Bassett’s Camp or near the present location of City Hotel.

The favorite day for bartering and trade was Sunday. Sonora’s streets were thronged with miners in town for their mail and purchasing supplies. It is said that on these days, the number of people in town could not have been less than 10,000.

July 4, 1850 brought the first issue of the Sonora Herald, the first newspaper published in the California mines. In May of 1851, the Herald announced that the census of the county was nearly completed and the population would prove to be between 18,000 and 20,000. About this same time, Martin Arnold and Co.’s stage line was established, making daily trips between Sonora and Stockton.

From 1900 to the early 1920s, gold production in the county was on the same high level, but with lack of materials and labor during World War I, Tuolumne County had been forced to see the closing of some of the richest gold producers in the world. With the decrease of gold mining, the county rapidly came to be known as a great lumber producer.

Here in the Mother Lode, gold panning is an outdoor adventure you can do on your own or with the help of an outfitter who will put together a one-day outing or a multi-day trip. Go back in time to the days of the Gold Rush. However, a word of warning: “Gold Fever” can strike at any time, and this rush for riches is how California began, attracting thousands to this land of opportunity!

When the snow begins to fall and our beautiful Sierras become a winter wonderland, it’s time for downhill and cross-country skiers, snowboarders and snowshoe enthusiasts. The new Boulder Creek Canyon Ski Area has expanded Dodge Ridge with its capacity to serve 15,700 skiers per hour with 12 lifts on 60 Green, Blue and Black Diamond trails.

Last but not least, summer is the season for a horseback trip into the Emigrant Wilderness region of Tuolumne County.

For Nordic skiers, the quiet and pristine white forest trails provide the best in outdoor adventure and a chance to renew the mind, body and spirit.

ot only is Tuolumne County known as an area with exceptional natural beauty and resources, but it also holds the distinguished title of a well-known “arts destination.” We provide year-round theater, music, art galleries and cultural events. Many nationally and internationally recognized artists in visual and performing arts consider this area home. Tuolumne County’s art scene contributes greatly to the economic prosperity of our communities, attracting visitors from far and wide.

The Sierra Repertory Theater offers more than 25 plays or musicals each year with more than 500 performances. Several music promoters present concert series, annual festivals and seasonal events. Fine art galleries and shops in most every town represent local painters, sculptors and artisans, while the local college, the arts council and professional arts associations offer classes and workshops for young and old alike.

Many of our communities offer a series of free, open-air music events at community parks and other venues. You can bring your picnic dinner, blanket and low-backed chair and enjoy great music under the stars.

During the spring and fall, the Strawberry Music Festival brings folks from around the world to hear folk and country music at beautiful Camp Mather near Yosemite. In

Columbia College also has much to offer, with dance and musical reviews and an independent and foreign film series.

The Sonora Opera Hall hosts many special events and the Mother Lode Fairgrounds regularly provide cultural and entertainment opportunities, such as the annual Christmas Fair and Craft Show, Mother Lode Fair and Rodeo and dances and auctions for nonprofit fundraisers.

And if that’s not enough, the U.S. Forest Service also presents concerts, dramatic performances and interpretive programs at their campgrounds and park venues. Some of our local communities sponsor a farmers’ market featuring fresh, locally grown produce, fresh baked bread and homemade condiments. Local crafts are also featured.

October, Sonora hosts the Bach Festival for a week of intimate concerts and solo performances, some held in local homes. In the winter, the St. James Concert Series and the Winter Gold Concert Series bring orchestral and vocal performances to Sonora, and Columbia College hosts the Columbia College Jazz Series. We also have the Symphony of the Sierra, the Mother Lode Brass and Reed Band and the Community Choir to add to the rich variety of musical offerings throughout the year.

The Central Sierra Arts Council is the hub of the county for connecting artists and audiences. Children and art are also included in their agenda, with their annual children’s art show held in March and their “Arts Reach to Schools” program. In April, the Council holds an “open entry” fine art show. May brings the Sonora Art Trails, which is an open studio tour of local artists.

October brings a ceramic show/sale, and in November, a panel-judged photography show. The council also offers a series of professional workshops and demonstrations throughout the year, and many of our local artists and musicians are available for private instruction. You can also make a visit to the George Post Gallery in downtown Sonora, which features exhibitions by local artists and artisans.

Tuolumne County also boasts a number of dance, yoga and martial arts studios and classes offered by local craft guilds and art associations. A variety of local shops provide tools and supplies for the artist in everyone.

THEATERS Sierra Repertory Theater Sierra Repertory Theater (SRT) is the largest professional theater company in Tuolumne County, with two very distinct venues: its original location in East Sonora, a contemporary 202-seat theater located on Highway 108 that has been operating since 1980, and the 274-seat historic Fallon House, located within the Columbia State Historical Park in Columbia. This 274-seat Victorian theater was built in the 1880s and was refurbished by the State of California in 1970. Both venues provide year-round seasons of award-winning musicals, comedies and dramas. SRT features Actors Equity performers and professional set designs in first-rate productions. SRT has the reputation of being the number one

Stage 3 Theater For a more intimate theater experience, visit Stage 3 Theater in downtown Sonora. This company is dedicated to the production of new works and contemporary playwrights.

uolumne County is in the southern portion of the Sierra Foothills viticulture region.

Vineyards are found from 1,000 to 4,000 feet in elevation. Most commercial vineyards are planted in red varietals.

However, some whites can be found.

The growing season consists of warm to hot daytime temperatures with cooling at night. The rocky and dry soils challenge the vines to work hard to nurture the precious fruit. These conditions, combined with the practice of limiting production per acre, are very favorable for the production of high quality fruit for the making of premium wines.

Some of the earliest vineyards in California can be traced to the foothills on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountains where wineries sprung up in the middle 1800s.

There are seven commercial vineyards in Tuolumne County. They are as follows: La Bella Rosa Vineyard – Old Wards Ferry Rd. Gianelli Vineyards – Algerine Rd. Griffin Vineyards – Potato Ranch Rd. Larson Vineyards (Flying Star Ranch) – La Grange Rd. Oaks Family Vineyard – Avenida Del Sol

Mt. Brow Winery and Vineyard – Mt. Brow Rd. Charles Pierce Vineyard – Tuolumne Rd.

Varietals include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel, Syrah, Petite Syrah, Sangiovese, Grenache, Chardonnay, Vermentino and some other specialty Italian varietals.

There are currently three tasting rooms in Tuolumne County.

Gianelli Vineyards has a tasting room in downtown Jamestown, which is open Thursday thru Sunday 12:00 noon to 5:00 pm. 209-984-1500.

Mt. Brow Winery has a tasting room at the winery on Mt. Brow Rd. Tasting is limited to Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m. or by appointment.

Several wineries are located in Calaveras County, just to the north of Tuolumne.

One of the largest is Ironstone Vineyards with tasting room and gourmet delicatessen. The facility is located in Murphy’s.

uolumne County provides healthcare services responsive to community needs. Area medical services serve a foothill community of approximately 57,000: approximately 20 percent of that population is 65+. Consequently, healthcare services are many and diversified in order to meet

the needs of all age groups. Most medical specialties are included in our large physician population.

Sonora Regional Medical Center provides acute-care services for the county. The hospital’s emergency room is staffed with physicians 24 hours a day. There are five walk-in clinics: two in Sonora, one in East Sonora, one in Groveland and one offering services at Tuolumne County Health Department.

Rural Indian Health & Dental Clinics are also available.

Long-term care and psychiatric outpatient care are provided by

Tuolumne General Medical Facility. A specialized Birth Center and Cancer Center are provided by Sonora Regional Medical Center.

The Family Health and Wellness Center, Dental Clinic, Diagnostic Imaging Center, Wound Care Center, Cardiac Rehabilitation and two skilled-nursing facilities operate under the direction of Sonora Regional Medical Center. Other skilled-nursing services can be procured at Avalon Health Care, which is a freestanding skilled facility for those requiring long-term care.

Adult Day Health Care is available in Sonora. Such a program offers a variety of health, therapeutic and social services to serve the specialized needs of those at risk of being placed in nursing homes. Bus service and a hot meal program are included in the daily cost.

Eight assisted living or residential care facilities are located in the county. Such facilities provide non-medical, out-of-home care to those requiring personal services such as help in bathing and grooming, observation of a confused client and assistance with making and keeping medical and dental appointments. Three specialized Alzheimer’s units in assisted living facilities provide services. Additionally, Avalon

Health Care offers a skilled-nursing Alzheimer’s unit.

Home health and hospice services are delivered by Sonora Regional Medical Center to persons needing health services in their homes. There are also two privately owned agencies and services through the Tuolumne County Health Department. Inhome supportive services are also available.

Physical, occupational and speech therapy

services are offered. Medical social work, home health aide services, wound care, ostomy services and even IV infusion therapy can also be obtained.

Services for the developmentally disabled are available under the auspices of Valley Mountain Regional Center, Mother Lode Independent Living Center, WATCH or Thumbs Up. Mental Health services are coordinated by the County of Tuolumne.

uolumne County is home to approximately 6,500 students who attend public schools. These young people have special talents, interests and needs as diverse as the county in which they live.

Tuolumne County has a Superintendent of Schools Office, which provides countywide leadership and support, contributing to a strong instructional program from kindergarten through high school.

The county is served by 11 public school districts, including two high school districts and one unified school district, along with one community college. In addition, there are four private schools with enrollments over 50. Enrollment figures in the public schools vary from year to year in relation to current employment opportunities within the county.
