Community Overview VALLEJO: YESTERDAY & TODAY

W

elcome to Vallejo, California – the “North Star of the Bay.” Vallejo is an attractive Northern California community, just a bit north of “the city,” situated on the banks of San Pablo Bay. We celebrate a storied history that stretches back to1844, when Mexican General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo chose this part of his vast landholding to serve as a thriving new state capitol. Following California statehood in 1850, General Vallejo donated approximately 156 acres to the creation of his dream, including an offer to lay out the city and donate $370,000 to the construction of a state capitol building, university, botanical garden, state penitentiary, several schools, asylum and hospital.

The first California Legislature convened in Vallejo in 1852, but relocated to Sacramento in just 11 days due to the poor conditions of the then unfinished city.

After a year in Sacramento, the Legislature moved back to Vallejo, with the eventual goal of establishing the state capitol in Benicia – eventually happening in February 1853. Ultimately, the California state capitol changed its address one last time, relocating to Sacramento in 1854 where it has remained.

That same year Mare Island Naval Shipyard was established in Vallejo, becoming the first permanent Naval ship building and repair installation on the West Coast. Mare Island became a boon for the city of Vallejo, which grew from 26,000 residents to nearly 100,000 during the five years of World War II. The facility functioned for more than 140 years before

closing in 1996. Today, Mare Island, registered as a National Historic Landmark, remains a significant historical marker in Vallejo and the Bay Area, with ongoing work continuing to preserve its heritage.

Vallejo is home to over 120,000 residents, with a large population representing descendents from Mare Island’s military and civilian personnel. Much of the area’s history can still be experienced through the area’s well-maintained historic architecture. There are more than 20 sites with landmark status and museums like the Vallejo Naval & Historical Museum and the Mare Island Artifacts Museum.

While the city is dedicated to the preservation of its past, it is simultaneously investing greatly in its future.

renaissance, with redevelopment and renewal occurring in several portions of the city – notably downtown, on Mare Island and in the newer sites of Northgate and the Waterfront. These new economic development projects only add to the draw of Vallejo – a community that already boasts outstanding transportation outlets, a rich, culturally diverse community, great recreation, affordable housing, three college campuses, easy access to most any of Northern California’s wonderful and varied attractions and the most comfortable weather our state has to offer.

estled at the northeast end of San Pablo Bay, Vallejo is a waterfront community strategically situated at the junction of Interstate 80 and 780 and State Highways 29 and 37. We are just 35 miles from the iconic city of San Francisco and nine miles from the widely popular Napa and Sonoma County wine countries.

Accessing all the attractions and culture of nearby San Francisco is effortless, thanks to WETA’s Baylink Ferry, as a number of daily routes connect Vallejo with San Francisco in just 60 minutes. Solano County Transit (SolTrans) also operates additional public transportation options, including fixed-route bus, para-transit and taxi services.

Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) is reachable in nearby Richmond and Berkeley. Amtrak’s California Thruway Motorcoach service makes stops at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom and the Vallejo bus stop.

As for air travel, Oakland, Sacramento and San

Francisco International Airports are the closest commercial terminals, with daily nonstop airport shuttles available for Vallejo travelers. The city is also well served by the Union Pacific Railroad and regional ports in Oakland, San Francisco and Richmond.

allejo offers its residents a unique way of life, mixing small town, historic charm with the finest in modern conveniences and facilities. With great schools, advanced healthcare, unmatched recreation, vibrant culture and more, Vallejo is a great place for residents in every stage of life.

The real estate mix here is as varied as it gets, with old and new coming together to provide a wide range of options for homebuyers. ith our location on San Pablo Bay, near San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean, Vallejo is blessed with an abundance of recreational opportunities.

Boating, fishing and other water activities are widely popular, with the Vallejo Municipal Marina and Glen Cove Marina catering to those who enjoy spending a day on the bay. The Bay Area Ridge Trail, more than 330 miles, winds through Vallejo and is great for hikers, bikers and horseback riders. There are also plenty of opportunities to enjoy a game of golf.

Vallejo, itself, hosts five golf courses and several nearby country clubs, which total more than 100 holes. Local favorites include the Mare Island Golf Club, Joe Mortara Course at Solano County Fairgrounds, two courses (East and West) at Blue Rock Springs Golf Club and Hiddenbrooke Golf Club on our northern boundary.

One of the area’s most highly utilized recreational providers is the Greater Vallejo Recreation District.

GVRD currently oversees 34 parks throughout the community, including a BMX/skate park, a dog park and Children’s Wonderland Park. Four community centers, an aquatic center and a tennis and bocce ball complex are also part of the district’s catalog of facilities.

In November 2011, the GVRD celebrated the grand opening of its new “Sports Park” inside Dan Foley Park. This brand new, $3.2 million addition to the park includes a lighted artificial soccer and softball field, new restroom/concession building, renovated picnic areas, pathways and a repaved park entrance. This facility can be used seven days a week, 52 weeks a year.

Also in 2011, GVRD established an exciting partnership with the highly regarded University of California Berkeley – Lawrence Hall of Science.

This effort brings additional educational and recreational opportunities to the Vallejo community and became a reality when the Lawrence Hall of Science received a grant from the Gordon & Betty Moore Foundation, enabling them to bring their satellite concept “Inventor’s Lab” to Vallejo. The purpose of the project is to inspire and prepare

young people in Vallejo to take part in projects involving science and mathematics. Some of the most popular programs from the Lawrence Hall of Science have been brought to the Norman C. King Community Center to serve local families, schools and teachers.

The “Inventor’s Lab” provides hands-on exhibits, brainstorming ideas and the opportunity for participants to build prototypes and test their designs’ concept at the lab.

In addition, GVRD organizes and manages a wide variety of events and programs for residents of all ages. Among the year-round offerings are aquatics, health and wellness classes, sports leagues, summer camps and the R.E.A.C.H. program for teens and adults with developmental disabilities. ocal and regional attractions, great shopping and dining…there is much to see and do while in Vallejo.

One of the city’s biggest tourist draws is its rich heritage attractions. The city has worked hard to preserve its more than 160-year-old history. This work is evident in Vallejo’s many designated landmarks and well-maintained historical architecture in areas such as the Vallejo Heritage Home District (one of only four nationally registered districts west of the Mississippi), the St. Vincent’s Hill Historic District and Historic Old Town Vallejo. Among the area’s most notable landmarks include: the original State Capitol building, the Empress Theatre, the Masonic Temple, Old City Hall, and Mare Island, a designated National Historic Landmark.

Mare Island is currently undergoing a revitalization project that includes a modern mixed-use center with new retail, entertainment, commercial, office, industrial and residential development. At the same time, Mare Island’s heritage continues to be preserved in its National Historic Landmark District. This district features St. Peter’s Chapel, Quarters A & B and Building 46 – the latter of which currently houses the Artifacts Museum. The Mare Island Historic Park Foundation maintains these sites and is currently working to create waterfront ship museum displays as well.

The history of the former U.S. Naval Shipyard, as well as the history of the city of Vallejo, can also be experienced at the more than 25,000-square-foot Vallejo Naval & Historical Museum, located in historic Old City Hall. The museum hosts five galleries featuring a mixture of its permanent collection, local private collections, borrowed artifacts from Mare Island’s Artifacts Museum and traveling exhibitions.

While history remains an important aspect to life in Vallejo, it is not the only feature of this enterprising area. Vallejo is home to the family favorite Six Flags Discovery Kingdom, a great destination mixing theme park rides and entertainment with an assortment of animal attractions. If you’re coming to visit during the holiday season, don’t miss “Fright Fest” or “Winter in the Park” both classic events that won’t be outdone, anywhere! Most importantly, don’t miss the grand

Visitors might also enjoy taking a trip a few miles up Interstate 80 to check out both the Jelly Belly Visitors Center and candy-making factory, and the Anheuser-Busch Brewery and one won’t want to miss out on a day in San Francisco or a short trip “up valley” to visit the Napa and Sonoma wine countries. All are within 35 minutes of downtown Vallejo.

If shopping is your thing, Vallejo has you covered! Downtown Vallejo is chock-full of stores filled with everything from antiques and gift items to jewelry and clothing. More than 40 retailers

make their home downtown, with the largest concentration located along Georgia Street. The central hub of Vallejo also hosts a year-round Farmers’ Market each Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Georgia & Main. Other local retail hot spots include Gateway Plaza, Vallejo Plaza, Solano 80 Center and Tennessee Street.

After a long day of sightseeing, make sure to stop at one of Vallejo’s many restaurants. The city hosts dozens of delicious eateries serving up a wide variety of menus. The eclectic blend includes American favorites, California-inspired dishes, BBQ delights, fast food eats, Asian, Filipino and Italianinfused creations, among others.

For those staying in town for more than one day, the greater Vallejo area is home to several high-quality hotels and motels, as well as one bed and breakfast inn and rustic accommodations at area campgrounds and a local RV park. rom concerts and theatre to highly anticipated community events, Vallejo is bursting with vibrant cultural outlets.

The Downtown Vallejo Arts & Entertainment District is a hot spot for local culture, featuring a fantastic mix of galleries, studios, shops and restaurants.

The district is anchored by the Empress Theatre, a circa 1912 Beaux Arts-style theatre that has been completely restored to serve as a top center for the performing arts in the Bay Area. Today, this local landmark features an assortment of events, including musical, dance and theatrical performances as well as community events. The Empress Theatre is operated by the Vallejo Community Arts Foundation.

Another shining gem in our community is The Fetterly Playhouse for the Arts, managed by Vallejo Music Theatre. Fetterly Playhouse is home to Vallejo Symphony Orchestra and the Fetterly Gallery. Additional cultural organizations with a presence in town include the MIRA Theatre Guild at the Bay Terrace Theater (Vallejo’s first and longest-running community theatre), the Vallejo Choral Society, the Vallejo Artists Guild and the North Bay Opera.

The Vallejo area also presents an assortment of exciting annual events throughout the year. The Solano County Fair is a popular gathering occurring each year in Vallejo. Celebrated in August, the event brings thousands of guests who enjoy competitive exhibits, livestock competitions, live entertainment, carnival rides, food, beverages and much, much more. Additionally, communitywide events garner large local crowds each year and include the following celebrations:

Juneteenth, July 4th, the Great Vallejo Ducky Derby, the Pirate Festival on the Vallejo Waterfront, the Wednesday Night Celebrations in downtown during the summer and the Mad Hatter Holiday Festival at Christmas time, just to name a few.

allejo is a community of lifelong learners and education remains a top priority here. Students from preschool through graduate studies are afforded a number of choices when it comes to receiving a first-rate education near home.

The main public school district in the community is the Vallejo City Unified School District. VCUSD serves approximately 14,500 K-12 students. There are 13 elementary schools, three K-8 schools, three middle schools, two comprehensive high schools, a continuation high school and a community day school.

Students and families can choose from innovative programs, stemming from Dual Immersion, Health and Fitness and Expeditionary Learning in our K-8 schools; Science and Technology programs in our middle schools and 9th grade Learning Communities and Career Academies in our high schools. The vision of the district is to have all students graduate from high school prepared for career and college. The VCUSD Governing Board has adopted the UC/CSU requirements as graduation requirements.

Additionally, students have opportunities to participate in extensive child development/preschool programs, special education, gifted and talented programs, support for English language learners, Advanced Placement courses, a school-to-career transition program, after-school programs, clubs and sports, independent study/home-based study option and an extensive music program. In addition, VCUSD operates the Vallejo Adult School, which offers free classes to approximately 3,000 adults each year.

Among the adult programs are English as a Second Language, GED and diploma, parenting resources, job and career training and classes designed for seniors.

VCUSD is an outstanding choice for K-12 students, but it is not the only option in Vallejo learning community.

The Mare Island Technology Academy is a public charter school chartered by VCUSD. MIT Academy is split into two schools, middle school and high school, each enrolling approximately 390 students. The rigorous curriculum includes core academic courses, Spanish instruction and a variety of technology applications, as well as opportunities for students to take advantage of college courses and an excellent after-school program.

Vallejo students and their parents have also been blessed with several outstanding private and parochial school opportunities. Among the favorites in town are: St. Basil the Great, St. Catherine of Siena, St. Vincent Ferrer and Starting Gate School for elementary (K-8) students and St. Patrick-St. Vincent High School – a highly accredited high school offering a full academic curriculum, full sports program and leadership training for students.

Post-secondary opportunities are readily available to graduating high school seniors and adult learners in Vallejo. Many choose to enroll at Solano Community College Vallejo Center, a state-of-the-art campus offering a range of programs, including two-year associate’s degree programs, transfer education, career training, fast-track education programs and noncredit personal enrichment courses.

Vallejo also hosts the only degree-granting maritime academy on the West Coast. The California Maritime Academy offers bachelor’s degrees in a variety of maritime-related areas, along with options for continuing education, training and research. Uniquely, students gain hands-on experience both on campus and on the school’s 500-foot training ship Golden Bear, a floating classroom and laboratory.

Additionally, graduate students looking to pursue a doctoral or master’s degree in health sciences, medicine, pharmacy or education are fortunate to be served by Touro University-California, ideally located in the Mare Island complex. This campus is a division of Touro College, a Jewish sponsored, not-for-profit, independent higher education system.

ow is a great time to do business in Vallejo – a well-connected Bay Area city characterized by a great location midway between San Francisco and Sacramento, prime commercial and industrial areas, a highly educated labor pool and a diversified base of businesses led by the healthcare, education and government sectors.

Vallejo is a dynamic and proactive city dedicated to ensuring a high quality of life for all of its community members and businesses. It continues to undergo much in the way of commercial, residential, cultural renewal and redevelopment.The city’s revitalization efforts are concentrated in four main areas of the city: • Mare Island constitutes one of Solano County’s largest commercial campuses, with future plans calling for approximately seven million square feet dedicated to commercial, office and industrial space. New parks, a waterfront promenade and an underground parking facility for the Vallejo Station Multi-Modal Transit facility are also included in the plans for this new 92-acre community.

• Northgate, a 109-acre commercial and residential development, features a fantastic mix of retail, office, education and residential uses.

Currently located at Northgate are 50,000 square feet of retail space, a neighborhood shopping center, the Vallejo Auto Mall, the modern Solano Community College-Vallejo Center and two gated communities – Hyde Park and Belvedere.

• Historic Downtown Vallejo is in the midst of a major redevelopment plan that includes transforming the heart of the city into three districts: the Arts & Entertainment District (anchored by the newly renovated Empress Theatre), the Residential & Retail District and the Civic & Transit District.

Included in the plans for this 12-block area is the incorporation of new buildings with street-level retail and services, second-floor residential housing and an array of improved elements.

he vast and growing healthcare sector established in Vallejo is committed to the health and well-being of all residents and visitors in the area. Anchoring the medical community are two world-class hospitals – the newest of which is the Kaiser Permanente Vallejo Medical Center.

While Kaiser Permanente has had an influence in the area since 1947, the group recently opened a new replacement hospital in town in March 2010. The modern, 267-bed medical center features: an emergency department, operating rooms, an ICU, a transitional care unit, a labor-and-delivery suit, medical-surgical units, radiology services and the world-famous Kaiser Foundation Rehabilitation Center. The hospital is joined by a large outpatient medical office building, which houses a range of primary care and specialty services, as well as three pharmacies and an on-site laboratory.

The 102-bed Sutter Solano Medical Center, part of the Sutter Health network, is another full-service hospital in Vallejo. The fully accredited medical center offers a range of programs and services, including: 24-hour emergency medicine, an outstanding cancer program, state-of-the-art obstetrics/gynecology services through the Family Birthing Center, comprehensive orthopedic care and full-service imaging, laboratory and pathology services.

In addition to these hospitals are a number of additional medical providers. Touro University Medical Center, led by Board-certified TU faculty

physicians, offers compassionate outpatient pediatric, adult and geriatric care. Specialized behavioral health services are supplied through St. Helena Hospital Center – a freestanding, 61-bed facility – and Crestwood Manor – a skilled nursing facility for long-term residents. Add in a catalog of: dentists, chiropractors, oncologists, surgeons, dermatologists, senior related providers and many others, the people of Vallejo are sure to find the healthcare they need without having to travel far from home.
