From the Mayor of Vineland ne hundred and fifty years ago, a man by the name of Charles K. Landis had the vision and determination to create “an ideal town.” His ideal was to have a town where people could work hard and enjoy the fruits of their labor. He envisioned a one square mile city surrounded by farms, orchards and vineyards, and thus named the city Vineland. It would be a city open to immigrants from all over the world with the freedom to practice the religion of their choice. It would be a community of opportunity.

Vineland has held true to the ideals on which it was founded. Today we are still a community that celebrates its cultural diversity with festivals, restaurants and a new public market offering many different ethnic cuisines. We have a multitude of churches representing religions from all walks of life. To this day, we are still an agricultural community that is home to the premier produce auction in the Eastern U.S. We offer industrial parks located on a four-lane highway that are within three hours of major markets. We are home to many entrepreneurs and professionals that have successful businesses. We have progressed quite a bit since Charles K. MultiAd recycles all paper and aluminum in the print production area, as well as all fluorescent light bulbs. We also use vegetable oil based inks, low VOC solvents and alcohol free fountain solutions in the press room. Through October 2010, MultiAd has recycled 860,467 pounds of paper which translates to saving: 7,314 trees, 3,011,610 gallons of water, 163,487 gallons of oil, 1,291 cubic yards of landfill space, 1,720,920 kilowatt hours and 25,814 pounds of air pollutants. We also recycled 21.5 tons of aluminum plates.

History visionary and a dreamer, Philadelphia native Charles K. Landis set out to create a town where hardworking men could earn a living farming the land. He found an ideal site in the heart of South Jersey – one with the presence of the railroad, affording easy access to the marketplace of Philadelphia. On August 8th, 1861, Landis acquired 20,000 acres and paid workers $1 per day to cut an avenue 100 feet wide and about one mile long, using the railroad as a center point. Upon completion of the first leg of Landis Avenue, Landis set out to establish a post office in the still desolate town he called Vineland.

Landis began advertising his planned community throughout the U.S. and overseas in the hope of luring farmers to settle. In 1862, the first house was built on East and Landis Avenues. Shortly thereafter, direct train service was established to Vineland from Philadelphia and New York. By 1865 a population of roughly 5,500 had settled in Vineland. In addition to its hardworking farmers and industrialists, the new community attracted many idealistic and progressive settlers. Throughout the years, Vineland men and women stood at the forefront of many reform movements. The Friends of Progress – a group formed to support, discuss and promote progressive thinking – erected Plum Street Hall for meetings, lectures and other town gatherings. Many of the group’s discussions focused on Equal

Rights, and on December 4, 1866, the Equal Rights Association was formed. One month later, the Equal Rights and Universal Peace Association held a convention at Plum Street Hall and elected new officers. In late August 1867, a mass meeting on Impartial Suffrage was held in Vineland. A year later, in September 1868, Susan B. Anthony spoke at Plum Street Hall, and on November 3, 1868 – 52 years before the 19th amendment was passed allowing women the right to vote – 172 women cast votes in the Presidential election. Landis kept a strong hold over the community. He tried to ensure that Vineland remained a “dry” town and a law was passed prohibiting the sale of liquor. Because many of the churches needed wine for their religious ceremonies, a man by the name of Dr. Thomas Bramwell Welch came up with the idea of preserving grape juice without fermenting it, hence alcohol free, in 1869. The demand for the grape juice spread rapidly, spurring Welch to form the Welch’s Fruit Juice Company, forerunner of today’s internationally known Welch Company. Dr. Welch set up a factory site near his second house, at Wood and Sixth Streets, where the Vineland Police Department is now housed. Operations were eventually moved to New York State, where a more plentiful supply of Concord grapes could be found.

A major milestone in Vineland’s history occurred on July 1, 1952, when two subsections of the town, Landis Township and the Borough of Vineland, were consolidated to become one city. Today, nearly 60,000 people call the City of Vineland home – a far cry from the city’s beginnings in the Civil War year of 1861.

Vineland continues to cherish its rich past, recently celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2011. The community hosts an annual Founders Day in May. The city honored its 150th birthday first on August 7, 2011, with the Birthday Barbecue, Carnival, Parade and Fireworks, then on September 24, 2011, at the Civil War Ball. The city’s history remains preserved, thanks to the hard work and dedication of the Vineland Historical and Antiquarian Society – the second-oldest historical society in New Jersey. The society operates a museum and library that houses numerous interesting pieces of local history, and hosts a variety of events and activities designed to keep the history of Vineland alive for generations to come.

The Rotary Club of Vineland has been serving the local community for more than 91 years. It is one of the oldest, strongest and largest clubs in southern New Jersey’s District 7640. Rotary is a volunteer organization with 33,000 clubs in over 200 countries and geographical areas. Rotary club members represent a cross-section of business and professional leaders around the world. These 1.2 million men and women donate their expertise, time, and funds to support local and international projects that help people in need and promote understanding among cultures. Rotary members continue to strive and outreach in the community while always putting “Service Above Self.” The Rotary Club of Vineland has more than 85 members and meets on Tuesdays, at 12:10 p.m. at the Vineland Ramada. The city became a leader in the industry, earning recognition as “The Egg Basket of America.” Ultimately, new technology brought an end to the poultry business in Vineland and, over time, new industries such as glass manufacturers, food processors and clothing companies were established in addition to farming. Retail stores abounded in a thriving downtown section, reaching its peak in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

The city’s Recreation Commission oversees 17 parks and facilities, including the Willow Oak Conservation Area – an exceptional outdoor educational laboratory. These wellmaintained spaces offer residents and visitors a range of amenities, including a public swimming pool, various athletic fields and courts, playground equipment, disc golf courses, picnic facilities, lakes for water activities and more. The commission also sponsors organized athletic leagues for both youth and adults, along with a host of community events. The YMCA of Vineland is a nonprofit organization dedicated to youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The local facility houses the wellequipped Family Fitness Center and Free Weight Room, a heated indoor pool, a gymnasium, child care services, as well as men’s and women’s locker rooms with steam room and whirlpool. Members also utilize a range of group fitness classes, aquatics and athletics programming, day camps, academic enrichment programs and more.

The Canlan Indoor Soccer Centre is also located within the facility, offering high quality indoor soccer playing surfaces. Nearby, outdoor enthusiasts

employ Al & Sam’s for all their canoe, boat and kayak needs, while motorsports athletes take to the pavement at the New Jersey Motorsports Park. The area is also replete with opportunities

for golfers. Novices and professionals alike enjoy hitting the greens at Running Deer Golf Club in Pittsgrove and Buena Vista Country Club in Buena, and Wheat Road Golf in Vineland offers facilities for practicing your swing and a variety of quality products for golfers. If you’re looking for a way to relax and unwind, stay fit or just play and have fun, you don’t have to travel far from your doorstep to discover the area’s wealth of sporting and leisuretime activities.

Canlan Ice Sports, a multipurpose entertainment and recreation facility, is another local gem. Featuring two NHLsized ice surfaces, the center accommodates a number of hockey organizations and offers a range of skating programs.

he Vineland area is home to a wide range of cultural attractions and entertainment venues.

Music lovers take pleasure in the sounds of the Bay-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra, a cultural jewel in southern New Jersey. The orchestra performs year-round, offering a subscription series and educational programming at Vineland-based Cumberland County College, in addition to many other venues in the region. The Vineland Regional Dance Company (VRDC) has been a part of the community’s cultural landscape since its formation in 1980. An honor company of

Vineland hosts a summertime concert series every Monday evening at the Enrico Serra Band Shell in Giampietro Park.

Regional Dance America/ Northeast, the VRDC provides professional training to young dancers, as well as the finest in performance and dance culture to the South Jersey area. Among the company’s most anticipated performances is the annual “Nutcracker Ballet.” Audiences revel in the exciting performance offerings at the recently restored Landis Theater & Performing Arts Center on Landis Avenue in Vineland. Taking the stage is a mix of local talent and national touring artists presenting a fine range of dance, music, drama and other entertainment. The theater also presents a “movie night” series that shows classic movies and timeless films.

Looking to catch the latest silverscreen flick? The Delsea Drive-In Theatre in Vineland is the only drive-in movie theatre in the state, offering a unique movie-watching experience for the whole family. Just outside of Vineland, the City of Millville hosts the Millville Army Air Field Museum, a site preserving U.S. military aviation history, and the Wheaton Arts and Cultural Center. This arts organization emphasizes the medium of glass art and hosts a fully-functioning glass studio, the Gallery of Fine Craft, the Down Jersey Folklife

Center and the Museum of American Glass. Nearby is Bellview Winery, a vineyard and winery in Landisville. The winery hosts many festivals, wine tastings and tours. Just a short drive south is the Bayshore Discovery Project in Port Norris. The heart of the project is the 1904 historic oyster shipping sheds and wharves, on the State and National Register of Historic Places. They house the Delaware Bay Museum and Folklife Center. In addition to these sites, Vineland’s location places it within 30 minutes of Atlantic City and 45 minutes from Philadelphia, affording even more sights to see.

Each year, the Greater Vineland Chamber of Commerce hosts the Dandelion Dinner and Beer Tasting Festival, an annual celebration of the agricultural season in Cumberland County. Over 400 people attend this event. Agriculture is a multimillion-dollar industry in Cumberland County, and last year farmers produced an estimated 30,000 bushels of dandelion. Though anyone with a troublesome lawn might consider themselves a dandelion grower, the dandelions now being harvested in Cumberland County are cultivated vegetables. Locally grown dandelion is sold up and down the eastern seaboard and as far west as Chicago.
