Wapakoneta, Then&Now W
apakoneta, Ohio is a proud city of 9,500-plus residents that enjoy a peaceful lifestyle in the developing West Central Ohio region. This charming historyinfused town laid its roots in the 1780s with the establishment of a Shawnee settlement along the Auglaize River. The city’s original name, Waughpaughkonnetta, has evolved into the name we know today — Wapakoneta.
In 1969, Wapakoneta earned worldwide recognition after Neil Armstrong, a native son, became the first man to walk on the moon. This strong connection with the space program can be seen at the Armstrong Air & Space Museum. Other prominent residents from the community’s earliest days are memorialized through street names, and the preservation of many of Wapakoneta’s historic structures ensures the past will always be remembered. While Wapakoneta continues to embrace its historic hometown feel, it is also a progressive city that maintains a keen eye on the future. With excellent business opportunities, attractively priced homes and access to outstanding culture and recreation, Wapakoneta embodies the perfect balance of small-town living with big-city amenities. j

The Shawnee tribe residing here was ultimately removed from Ohio and sent to Kansas by 1832, opening up the land for settlement. Wapakoneta was officially platted in Allen County in 1833 and was later designated the county seat of the newly formed Auglaize County in early 1848. The town experienced a surge in growth and development with the arrival of the Dayton & Michigan Railroad in 1858. It soon became a leading shipping hub in this region of Ohio. By the late 1800s, Wapakoneta’s population grew immensely and its industrial sector became more and more diversified—leading to the establishment of a thriving downtown district.

n July 20, 1969, the world paused for a brief, shining moment. Apollo 11 had reached the moon. Wapakoneta’s native son, Neil Armstrong, stepped out of the Eagle and set foot on the soft dust of the lunar surface and said the words we still quote today: “That’s one small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind.” As the local astronaut was saying those words, Ohio officials were already planning a museum to honor Armstrong’s achievement, as well as all Ohioans who have attempted to defy gravity. Armstrong’s exploits and other achievements in Ohio’s history of flight can be experienced at the Neil Armstrong Air & Space Museum. The museum takes visitors on a journey through aerospace history. Designed to resemble a futuristic moon base, the building’s white dome actually houses the Astro-Theater that presents multi-media presentations of space exploration. The museum is home to the Gemini 8 flown by Armstrong in 1966, a space shuttle landing simulator and a piece of moon rock.

Healthcare M
aintaining a healthy lifestyle in Wapakoneta is a significant mission among area medical providers. The community is full of healthcare resources, as numerous family physicians, specialists, dentists, optometrists, chiropractors, physical therapists and clinics are established throughout town. A new imaging center and urgent-care center and wellness center have recently opened here. Wapakoneta’s location also places it within 15 miles of three outstanding hospital campuses. Lima Memorial Hospital is part of Lima Memorial Health System, a network comprised of the 300-bed hospital campus and 25 additional facilities within a 10-county area. Lima Memorial offers a full scope of healthcare services. The hospital’s centers of excellence includes a comprehensive heart program at the Heart and Vascular Institute, an advanced Emergency Center equipped with a Level II Trauma Center, the Family Birth Center and the Center for Orthopaedics and Neurology. Plus, Lima Memorial recently completed the modern, 24,000-square-foot Timmermeister Family Surgery Center in 2008. Located in St. Marys is Joint Township District Memorial Hospital (JTDMH), the flagship of the extensive Grand Lake Health System (GLHS). JTDMH has been ranked among the top 1 percent of all hospitals in the nation by Premier/CareScience Health Alliance, and its Home Health and Emergency services have garnered recognition among the best in the country. The 130-bed hospital also excels in such areas as cardiac care, transition care, rehabilitation, surgery and women’s services, to name a few. In addition to JTDMH, the system opened the new 10,000-square-foot Wapakoneta Medical Center in February 2008. The facility offers Wapakoneta Primary
Care services, along with Wapakoneta Urgent Care services. Wapakoneta is also situated near St. Rita’s Medical Center, the largest hospital in the area. Distinguishing services at St. Rita’s, located in Lima, include the offerings at the Henry & Beverly Hawk Heart Center, along with emergency and trauma care, cancer care, women’s health, pediatrics, radiology and laboratory, and addiction and behavioral services. Seniors are offered a number of facilities in the area as well, which specialize in a continuum of care for aging patients. Retirement communities, nursing homes and rehabilitation centers are located in Wapakoneta and nearby. Further senior services and programs can be accessed in Wapakoneta through the Auglaize County Council on Aging, located in St. Marys. j
