Significant economic development efforts by public entities and the private sector are yielding positive results in the community of Washington. Downtown revitalization efforts started in 2005 with the city upgrading utility services to businesses on the square and a streetscape with amenities in 2008 that are both functional and aesthetic. Public/private partnerships enabled construction of our new library and rehabilitation of the Central Park bandstand. Commercial building owners are investing in facades and upper-story reutilization. With a historic district application in the works, other buildings will soon follow suit, making the downtown an even more vibrant destination to shop and live. Rejuvenation extends beyond the downtown. We’ve gained new enterprises in other commercial and industrial districts as well. The city is positioning itself for growth with a new sewer plant that became operational in 2012 and a new water tower in the planning stages. Ground has been acquired for a new industrial/business park, reconstruction of our airport’s crosswind runway, and for a Wellness Park. Our new high school opened in the fall of 2012, and upgrades of other school attendance centers are underway. Kirkwood Community College is expanding its capacity to serve the community with a larger campus opening 2014. We are well served by a new hospital and medical clinics. These investments within the city do more than deliver services to consumers; they provide quality of life to our area residents. Where our city limits are identified by a line drawn on a map, there is no line that defines our community. This event, held twice each year, January and June, features downtown restaurants, entertainment, and good company. Celebrate Your Senses – Held the first Saturday of August each year in downtown Washington. ashington, Iowa is a vibrant community that proudly boasts outstanding recreational opportunities, interesting historical sites, festive community events, excellent educational offerings and modern healthcare options.

Founded in 1839, Washington is centrally located in southeast Iowa just 30 minutes south of Iowa City/Coralville. Washington is the county seat of Washington County and is in one of the top livestock and grain producing areas in the nation. With a population of approximately 7,300 the city offers The Washington Evening Journal, a daily local newspaper, and KCII, the local radio station. It is home to approximately 20 churches and over 100 social and service clubs and organizations. The City of Washington was recognized in 2008 as a “Main Street Community” and the downtown square reflects an active Americana feel. The Centennial Fountain was constructed and

dedicated in 1939 for Washington’s Centennial Celebration. It is the only one if its type in the continental United States and was refurbished in 1995 by a group of local citizens. It features a multi-colored light show and is the focus of Central Park in downtown Washington. The downtown park is surrounded by a square filled with unique retail shops, professional offices, and service businesses. Throughout the year the community hosts several special events. Included is a seasonal weekly farmers’ market, band concerts, car shows, craft shows, Fourth of July celebration, Relay for Life, lighted Christmas parade, Christmas Tour of Homes, and several annual parades. The state’s longest-running Ridiculous Day originates from Washington and you can find retail bargains, community events and a parade on the first Saturday in June. Washington boasts a municipal band which will celebrate its 80th season in 2012! Weekly concerts are held at the open-air bandstand in Central Park during the summer months. Plays, musicals, dances and multiple performances are held at the McCleery Community Center, which is a 22,000-square-foot modern structure accommodating cultural and educational programming for the surrounding area. There are endless recreational opportunities with Washington’s extensive park system and community programming. Included is Sunset Park with its enormous New Dawn at Sunset wooden

playground, fantastic aquatic center, an 18-hole Frisbee golf course, bike/skateboard area, picnic tables, basketball courts, and a dog park. Shelters are available for gatherings and reunions. The 13-mile Kewash Nature Trail offers excellent hiking, biking, and cross country skiing opportunities. The Washington Community Y offers organized youth and adult sports activities, a senior center, weight and nautilus room, and with an indoor pool they offer swimming lessons for all ages and water exercise classes for adults. Established more than 175 years ago, Washington is rich in history, as seen through the many well-preserved historical sites throughout town. There are several vintage homes and buildings in Washington which are listed on the National Register of Historical Places. These include the 1840 DAR log house in Sunset Park, the Blair House, Conger House museum, Central Park’s centennial fountain with its beautiful multi-colored light show, and F-troop Military Museum. & TRANSPORTATION entrally positioned within Iowaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s growing southeast region, Washington is a quick 30-minute drive from Iowa City, home of the revered University of Iowa and its famous hospitals and clinics. Nearby roadways, excellent local public transportation, well-equipped airport and countrywide rail lines all play a significant role in Washingtonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s high quality of life.

Washington enjoys proximity to major road connections that have aided both in strengthening its economic sector and providing efficient travel for the incoming and outgoing public. The Avenue of the Saints (Hwy 218) can be reached in eight minutes, while Interstate 80 is accessible in 30 minutes.

The city has maintained a public transit system since 1972. Washington County Minibus is a private, not-for-profit organization offering affordable and convenient public transit throughout the area. The Minibus operates 20 vehicles in the Washington community, providing a variety of services to those within Washington County, may it be transporting children to school, the elderly to a medical appointment or residents to the grocery store. The Washington County Minibus is handicapped accessible and runs Monday through Friday and Sundays. Travelers access commercial air service through two regional airports; the Eastern Iowa Airport in Cedar Rapids, IA, and the Quad Cities Airport in Moline, IL. Right on the edge of town is the Washington Municipal Airport, which supports both corporate and recreational aircraft. The Washington Municipal Airport is a catalyst for economic growth by supporting the needs of local agriculture and business operations, as well as users from across the nation. It sports concrete hard surface runways that are capable of handling General Aviation planes up to medium to large jets. There is reliable access in all wind and most weather conditions due to its two runways and the low approach minimums. Users have access to 24-hour self-fueling of Jet A and 100LL on a well-lit ramp offering a quick turnaround or departure. Situated in the Midwest, the Washington Airport provides support for operations that require in house air transportation to the coasts, to the gulf, or to Canada. The Washington Airport is another feature that Washington has to offer to help your family have a great quality of life experience or to help your business enterprise prosper. Amtrak rail service is also available approximately 30 minutes from the city, providing connections in Mount Pleasant. The station is served by the California Zephyr route, which operates daily between Chicago and San Francisco, and offers one of the most scenic routes in North America.

ashington cherishes its vibrant past, which dates all the way back to 1833, when the land first became available for settlement following treaties with the Sac and Fox Indian tribes. Originally, the town was designated as Slaughter, a name given in honor of William B. Slaughter, Secretary of the Territory of Wisconsin. The name was not well taken and was soon changed to Washington, after George Washington, on January 25, 1839, the same year the town became the county seat.

Guard Cavalry. Now, patrons can peruse through unique military memorabilia from the Civil War, WW I, WW II, the Korean Conflict, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Iran and Iraq.

Original settlers came to Washington for many reasons: the land was fruitful and quality farms were sold at a low cost, or given away for free. Today, with a population reaching 7,300, the city’s history continues to be seen and appreciated here through a number of preserved structures. Make sure to stop by each of these sites described below and take a glimpse into Washington’s vibrant past.

Situated within Central Park, located in Historic Downtown Washington, Centennial Fountain was erected and dedicated in honor of Washington’s 1939 Centennial Celebration. The fountain stands as the only one of its type in the continental U.S. featuring a multi-colored light show and distinctive water patterns. Centennial Fountain is certainly the focus of Washington’s Central Park, an area encompassed by retailers, professional firms and additional businesses, and hails as the site for many of the community’s special events.

Take a step back and view some of Washington’s oldest homes along The Boulevard (West Washington Street). Many were built in the late 1800s, and showcase a variety of architectural styles. The original brick street continues to be utilized today. Blair House, referred to as the “Little Sister” to Terrace Hill (the Governor’s Mansion), was constructed in 1880 and served as the headquarters of the Washington Commercial Club in 1902 and the city hall in 1925. A group of local citizens acquired and restored the house in 1974, and today the house serves as an office and meeting center. Further well-maintained historic residences include the Conger House and the Alexander Young Log Cabin. The Conger House was built in 1847 by one of the county’s earliest settlers. The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and, since opening as the Jonathan Clarke Conger House Museum in 1973, displays a variety of collections of the Washington County Historical Society. The Alexander Young Log Cabin is situated in Sunset Park, serving as the home of Alexander Young, his wife Mary and their eight children after its construction in 1840. Named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, the cabin is open for viewing by appointment. Two preserved one-room schoolhouses are discoverable in the area. The first is the Red Brick Schoolhouse, home to the Red Brick School District (formed in 1877), was used until May 8, 1960. It is a wellknown landmark within the county and was donated to the Washington County Historical Society on January 8, 2006. The second is the Walnut Creek School, located six miles south of Washington. This one-room school served the area’s educational needs and was also utilized by the Walnut Women, who formed on October 6, 1921. Today, Walnut Creek School operates as a museum under the guidance of the Washington County Historical Society. The F Troop Military Museum was initially used as the administrative office of Troop F, World War I’s 113th Iowa National 12

The Dublin Store, built in 1873 as the Odd Fellows Lodge hall, is positioned just seven miles outside of Washington along 250th Street. The store has been home to a post office and a number of other business activities until its closing in June of 1964.

JOHN E. JACKSON John E. Jackson of Washington was one of three Iowans to participate in the games of the V Olympiad held in Stockholm, Sweden July 6-27, 1912 Olympics. He was on the United States Rifle Team. The team left for New York City on June 7. They had a farewell dinner at the famous Mouquina’s restaurant on June 13. They then sailed from New York City on the steamer Finland, and reached Stockholm on June 26. They left Sweden on July 17 on the Finland which took them to Dover where they boarded the steamer Vadeland for the return trip to New York City. During the Olympics, Sweden had the most total medals, winning 65. The United States came in second with 63. The United States had the most gold medals. The United States earned 25 gold, 19 Silver and 19 Bronze medals. Jackson won the gold medal in the team military rifle competition, and the bronze medal in the 600 meter free rifle event. Jackson was born February 14, 1885 at Lincoln, Illinois. The family settled in Washington County in 1896 and farmed until 1926. Jackson married Ellie May Schneider on November 6, 1910, and had two sons John C. and Harold B. Jackson was a member of the Iowa National Guard and trained under Smith Wildman Brookhart, who was a noted rifleman and wrote a training manual that was used for many years. Brookhart later served as United States Senator from Iowa from 1922 to 1933. After giving up farming, Jackson went into the seed business. He moved to Fairfield, and purchased the Fairfield Feed Company. While living in Fairfield, he served three terms on City Council. John E. Jackson died June 17, 1971 at Fairfield. He is buried in Elm Grove Cemetery, Washington, Iowa.

Throughout the year, both residents and visitors take pleasure in a schedule of exciting events and a multitude of outstanding attractions. And when the appetite calls for a delicious dish, Washington restaurateurs are ready to serve up an eclectic range of menus.

EVENTS Washington offers events year-round that celebrate history and culture and enhance community cohesion. A seemingly endless list of celebrations, festivals and beautiful displays are presented for all to enjoy. One such display is the Centennial Fountain, Springtime brings the Gallery Walk to downtown Washington. This is an event in which area artists and art students showcase their talent by displaying artwork in windows of supporting businesses. It also brings car enthusiasts to Washington’s Cruise Nights where they display a variety of classic and new show cars. Washington is home to the state’s oldest Ridiculous Day, held the first Saturday in June. Retailers line the downtown square with unbeatable bargains while crazy, fun activities take place in Central Park. A parade showcases the wacky side of our retailers and this event promotes local shopping in a family friendly atmosphere.

Sponsored by Washington County Hospital, “Kidz Fest” is an event that places children of all ages at the center of attention. “Kidz Fest” presents a variety of specialized games, such as an obstacle course and a wheel of fortune focusing on health and summer safety. Other activities include face painting and entertainment by local dancers.

Throughout the summer Central Park is alive with activity on Thursday evenings. The local Farmers’ Market is the widely popular social, economic and cultural event every week during the growing season. Offering fresh produce, baked goods, and handmade crafts, be sure to come early to grab your favorites. As the Farmers’ Market winds down, Thursday Night Live begins and features live, local entertainers. An old-fashioned band concert caps off the evening, headlined by the Washington Municipal Band—one of the oldest in Iowa, with 2012 being their 80th season.

Barn Quilts of Washington County has over 115 Barn Quilts to showcase on four driving loops. Sass Family Farm, an authentic 1950s Iowa Farm, specializes in fresh produce and family fun. Visitors can visit a real working farm with a trip to Cuddeback farm, allowing visitors to compare farming in the 1880s and 1930s to modern farming practices. Touring options also include tours of a working greenhouse, a beekeeping operation, a corn processing facility and Bandana’s Backyard, which is home to many exotic animals in an informal petting zoo. The winter holiday is kicked off with S.N.O.W. (Showcasing Nights of Washington) hosted by Main Street. Featuring a holiday stroll, kid’s art display, window display contest and the Lighted Holiday Parade it’s an event worthy of stepping out in the cool air. Cars and wagons are decorated with multi-colored lights and many themes are presented. At the end of the parade is the much-anticipated arrival of Santa Claus. The Chamber of Commerce’s Christmas Candlelight Tour of Homes raises funds for the holiday lighting that lines the downtown businesses in white, festive lighting. Explore beautifully decorated homes dating from the early 1900s to the present.

ATTRACTIONS The Barn Quilts of Washington County is a project designed to celebrate the agricultural heritage of the area by highlighting local farm buildings with beautiful, quilt-related folk art. Barn quilts are painted quilt blocks that adorn barns, corn cribs, sheds and other significant buildings. These barn quilt paintings enhance community pride and attract both local visitors and tourists, highlighting the importance of agriculture. There are over 115 Barn Quilts on four driving loops, which makes Washington County the Barn Quilt Capital of Iowa. The Washington County Fair is a popular happening in July drawing over 10,000 visitors to the weeklong event. There are carnival rides, a Bill Riley talent show, Kidz Day, a cutie contest and more. The tractor pull, demolition derby, moto cross, fair queen pageant and other free grandstand entertainment thrill the crowds. 4-H and FFA members exhibit nearly 1,200 animal projects and over 1,100 non-livestock projects each year. The cooler autumn weather doesn’t slow down festivities within the Washington community. Trick-or-Treat Around the Square, a tradition for many years in Washington, gives children the opportunity to dress up in their favorite costumes and trick-ortreat at participating businesses. After the handing out of the treats, the children are treated to tasty hot dogs, chips and drinks provided by local establishments. Also held during the fall is a craft show, drawing crafters from near and far to display their wares. Lending Hands Adult Day Center and In-Home Health Services is a new addition to the Halcyon House/WesleyLife family of services. As a longtime member of the Washington community, Lending Hands Adult Day Center provides personalized care to help people remain in their homes for as long as possible. Lending Hands InHome Health Services is relatively new. Washington Community School District is composed of five locations, together housing more than 1750 students. Rather than just relying on row-crops, Washington County is a national leader in hog production, which are all locally owned. In addition to hogs, the country is also a national leader in corn, soybean and beef production. There are also large amounts of turkey production, chickens, goats, and limited cattle and dairy production. Innovation has led to companies serving the livestock building, animal feed, animal waste, and energy efficiency, including wind and solar power. The Washington County area has one of the largest concentrations of organic farms in the Midwest. There are two organic soybean extrusion plants, including Professional Proteins, which makes organic feed for organic livestock, and Farmers Hen House processing natural and organic eggs. The fast growing, Farmers All Natural Creamery, sells organic milk,

cheese, yogurt and butter throughout the Midwest and even the East Coast. Local business and industry is fortunate to have considerable support from a handful of resources, which includes the benefits of having a revered community college at hand. With the presence of Kirkwood Community College, Washington is teeming with dedicated, highly skilled and well-educated workers, with the additional benefits of workforce training and continuing education courses. The Washington Economic Development Group (WEDG) is a non-profit, public-private partnership that helps to create a positive environment for business and industry around Washington County and Southeast Iowa. WEDG partners with a wide variety of resources and organizations to help meet the

need of the business community, including area banks, accountants, and regional resources like the Small Business Development Center, the Entrepreneurial Development Center business accelerator, the Community Vitality Center, the East Central Iowa Council of Governments, and the Iowa Economic Development Authority. Focusing on the betterment of both the business sector and the community at-large, the Washington Chamber of Commerce is a private, not-for-profit voluntary organization that brings together hundreds of local businesses through a variety of programs, networking events and a host of additional services designed to educate and supply a pool of resources to the community. The Chamber supports the economic initiatives of the community by acting as the community information hub, providing business referrals, maintaining a community calendar, promoting local shopping and encourages the city of Washington in all facets on a daily basis.

he city of Washington is proud of its progressive attitude and array of high-quality public services and resources available to its residents. Operating under a Mayor-Council form of government, the city is overseen by a mayor, and a six-member city council.

The current courthouse, originally built in 1887, continues to be a haven for justice in the county. Washington County is governed by a fivemember board of supervisors. Also housed in the recently renovated courthouse are the offices of the County Auditor, Treasurer, Recorder, Attorney and Clerk of Court. The Historic McCreedy Building, located adjacent to the courthouse, contains the offices of the County Engineer and Assessor. Public safety is ensured through the Washington Police Department, which is comprised of 12 sworn officers, including a K-9 officer and two administrative assistants. City police are on-hand night and day in order to protect and serve the community at-large. Washington is also served by the Washington County Sheriff ’s Office, which oversees the area’s 911 dispatch, records administration, civil process, disaster services, as well as the modern Washington County Jail. The new jail opened for use in January of 2008 and boasts a long list of state-of-the-art features. With four full-time members, supplemented with more than 30 volunteers, Washington’s Fire Department is available for a

variety of services 24/7. For further aid during a crisis, Washington offers the volunteer-based First Responders who are on-call 24 hours to assist in area emergencies. Washington is also equipped with a local paramedic level ambulance service. Washington continuously sustains its earliest town motto, “The Cleanest City in Iowa,” through a score of initiatives throughout the year. Year-round curbside recycling has been in effect since 1989, with the joint city/county recycling center operating all year to dispose of appliances and large items. A bulky item sticker may be purchased at City Hall for removal of large items placed on the curb on the regular garbage pick-up day all year long. Each fall, Washington operates a leaf vacuum throughout the city, along with providing a yard waste removal program from spring to fall. Washington also sponsors an annual cleanup day in the spring, which offers free removal of most items brought curbside for trash pick-up.

Since 1912, Washington County Hospital and Clinics has been a part of the local healthcare community. The hospital was originally founded as Washington County Hospital, the first rural county public hospital in Iowa and west of the Mississippi. The name was changed to Washington County Hospital and Clinics (WCHC) in 1998 in an effort to encompass more of what the hospital offers and after completing a major expansion project. In 2006 and 2007, the hospital was able to invest even more in the future of healthcare in Washington by constructing new hospital facilities. These state-of-the-art facilities offer the latest in technological advancements in healthcare, while reflecting on comfort and a pleasing environment for patients and their families. WCHC is a 25-bed Critical Access hospital and 43-bed nursing home, providing inpatient, outpatient, long-term care and emergency services for Washington County and surrounding areas. WCHC’s entire healthcare team strives to meet the changing medical needs of the communities they serve. With today’s shift to shorter hospital stays, WCHC provides an extensive outpatient surgery department, radiology and rehabilitation

services. The McCreedy Home and the Keota Community Clinic also extends the continuum of care available in their communities. WCHC continuously meets healthcare needs with compassionate treatment, state-of-the-art technology and a competent staff of professionals. The hospital has seen many changes in its storied history. In 2006, WCHC broke ground on a major $22 million expansion and renovation project. Nearly all patient care areas experienced much-needed improvements thanks to this project. The first phase, a new 50,970-squarefoot addition, was complete in July 2007; the second phase was completed in December 2007, featuring 28,140 square feet of renovations. The hospitalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s surgical facilities are some of the finest in the area. They include: general surgery, orthopedics, ENT, eye, podiatry, gastroenterology and gynecological procedures, and laparoscopic surgery. WCHC houses a Respiratory Therapy Department, an Ambulatory Care Department and a beautiful Family Birthing Center comprised of all LDRP rooms, which means patients labor, deliver, recover and spend time after birth in the same room. There are Murphy beds that fold down for overnight visitors. The Washington County Hospital Foundation recently funded the addition of a high-tech Infant Security System. The Family Birthing

Center provides the latest in security to assure the safety and health of the new babies. With no public access to the area, visitors must be buzzed both in and out and the area is under 24hour surveillance by camera. The Emergency Room Department at Washington County Hospital and Clinics is a Level IV Community Trauma Care Facility. The Emergency Room has private ER treatment rooms to allow more confidentiality, a large double-bay trauma room, and is physician-staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. WCHC has access to specialized services on an emergency basis through the use of helicopters. There are also the Specialty Clinic and Cardiac Rehab areas, the Therapy Department and the Women’s and Surgical Healthcare of Washington. As a separate clinic, there are two fulltime Obstetricians and Gynecologist and a General Surgeon.

he city of Washington is home to a rich religious tradition. Approximately 20 houses of worship represent a wide variety of traditions, providing a great number of spiritual services. Along with regular and special worship services, local churches serve the needs of the community through youth groups, educational events, spiritual support groups, outreach and advocacy.

The Washington Ministerial Association is a strong voice in the community, working to unite the community through local events and outreach projects. The association sponsors an interdenominational worship service each summer in Central Park, and in the late fall, gather in celebration for an Ecumenical Thanksgiving service. Hamakua Place hosts Christian music groups, conferences & retreats. In the fall of 2012, a 12-bed crisis housing facility for youth, young adults & families in an emergency situation was added. In addition to faith-based services, over 100 service clubs and social organizations have been established here.
