Community Introduction T

he city of Wauwatosa welcomes you to southeast Wisconsin. A city of ideal location and size, just 15 minutes from Milwaukee and Lake Michigan, and with a population of 46,396 residents, Wauwatosa is proximal to both a thriving metropolis and the Wisconsin dairy farmland the state is known for. Wauwatosa was historically attached to the Township of Milwaukee until 1842 when it earned its independence and a name change. “Wauwautosa,” derived from the Potawatomi word “wau-wau-tae-sie,” means “firefly,” which was a fitting name as the nearby Menomonee River Valley swarmed with fireflies each summer. The city’s name also honors Chief Wauwautaesie of the Potawatomi tribe, which, along with the Menominee tribe, settled in the region far before European settlers made their way to the state. Once a village and then a town, the city of Wauwatosa (a new spelling due to the consistent mutation of the original Wauwautosa) was incorporated on May 27, 1897.

Wauwatosa was the second city in the state to adopt a zoning ordinance, leading to its reputation as the “city of homes.” The city’s mission is to “provide services that are essential or that enhance the quality of life in the community, all in ways that are efficient, effective and affordable.” Served by the Wauwatosa Chamber of Commerce, residents and visitors alike are always in good hands in Wauwatosa. Brimming with affordable homes, lush Wisconsin scenery and the excitement of city life right around the bend, Wauwatosa is an optimal city to relocate to, visit or retire. Come on in!

Parks

B

oth the city of Wauwatosa and Milwaukee County maintain exceptional park systems in the area, which provide residents ample opportunities to enjoy the urban outdoors.

The city of Wauwatosa’s Parks and Forestry Division oversees Webster and Hart Parks and several facilities in town, while also investing in the maintenance of public park benches and approximately 38,000 square feet of boulevard flowerbeds adorning the streets of the community. Recently renovated Hart Park, abutting picturesque Tosa Village, is the community’s gathering place, home of the Hart Park Senior Center and serving as a great place for band concerts, fireworks, sports and outdoor recreation. Hart Park, along the Menomonee River, is in the midst of a major restoration and expansion project. After the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District completed a flood control project in 2007, Hart Park was expanded from 20 acres to 53 acres. The city immediately implemented a new design for the

14 | TosaChamber.org

enlarged park. Residents have already seen the completion of a dozen lighted tennis courts, a softball diamond, sand volleyball and bocce ball courts, a playground, picnic shelter and the state-of-the-art Rotary Performance Stage. In early 2010, a brand new multi-use athletic field and track, with bleacher seating capable of accommodating 4,900 spectators, was completed. The entire complex features synthetic track and turf. Installation of an extensive children’s play area that complements the park began in 2011. Several other parks in Wauwatosa are a part of Milwaukee County’s award-winning park system, including Currie Park, Hansen Park, Madison Park and Jacobus Park. Both Currie Park and Hansen Park offer golf facilities in Wauwatosa, which draw golfers of all skill levels. The newest addition to the system is a park that was developed after neighborhood residents worked together to preserve a 16-acre parcel along the Menomonee River Parkway. The parcel, straddling both Wauwatosa and Milwaukee on the site of a former limestone quarry, had reached capacity as a city

of Milwaukee landfill. The result of that community action is Hartung Park, an environmentally conscious neighborhood park that incorporates environmental education, a children’s playground and outdoor recreation space. Running throughout the Tosa park system is the Oak Leaf Trail – a 100-plus-mile multi-use trail popular among bicyclists, runners, walkers and rollerbladers. The scenic urban trail encircles the Milwaukee County area and offers off-road paved trails, park drives and municipal thoroughfares.

Recreation

Q

uality recreation is a significant feature in Wauwatosa, which is dedicated to providing an enhanced standard of life for its residents, both young and old. The city and its surrounding area are overflowing with great recreation areas thanks to the well-maintained parks and local recreation organizations. Area parks feature ample spaces and equipment ideal for both active and passive recreational use. Within Wauwatosa, park-goers discover everything from athletic fields, tennis courts and playgrounds to picnic spots and plenty of green space. Lake Michigan, with its miles of beaches and lovely marinas, is only 10 miles away. The area’s local swimming hole came to life again with the grand opening of the new TOSA Pool at Hoyt Park the summer of 2011. The life of the park continues its evolution from the earth-bottomed swimming hole of

16 | TosaChamber.org

the turn-of-the-century to the pool built in 1939 by the Civilian Conservation Corps and culminating in a state-of-the-art community pool with zero-depth entry, a water slide and lap lanes for competitive swimming. The TOSA Pool at Hoyt Park is once again the place to be on hot summer days. More than 87,000 visitors enjoyed the pool in its opening season, swimming in the heated water, taking swimming lessons and snacking on 6,700 ice cream cones! The Friends of Hoyt Park & Pool, the nonprofit organization that funded, built and operates the pool, welcomes you to another great summer at the TOSA Pool. Learn more about the way summer should be at www.friendsofhoytpark.org. Each August, Wauwatosa’s award-winning National Night Out program brings together thousands of residents for an evening of education and entertainment centered on crime prevention and safety education. Wauwatosa’s Neighborhood Watch Steering Committee works with the Wauwatosa Police Department and local businesses to hold the event in Hart Park, where

families enjoy food, live music and children’s activities. At dusk, the Flashlight Walk begins, winding through Hart Park, the Menomonee River Parkway and the Tosa Village. The night ends with a spectacular fireworks display at Hart Park. The Wauwatosa School District oversees the local Recreation Department. Every season is brimming with exceptional recreation programs for people of all ages. Sports programs, enrichment classes, aquatics, summer camps, fitness courses and senior activities are among the many choices residents have when it comes to enrolling in programs sponsored by the Wauwatosa Recreation Department. The West Suburban YMCA has been an integral part of Wauwatosa for more than 30 years, providing a wellequipped facility and a long list of programs for children, teens, adults and seniors. Among the many ways Y members stay active are by participating in various summer or day camps, group fitness classes, sports programs, preschool classes and more. The West Suburban Y also administers the Hart Park Senior Center, which provides an endless array of events and activities for seniors.

The Little Red Store is a Wauwatosa treasure. The oldest commercial building in Tosa, built in 1854, the Little Red Store served as the community’s first railroad depot and express office, and it remains the oldest standing post office building in Milwaukee County. The Little Red Store was designated a city landmark in 1978 and a historic structure in 1998, following a community-wide preservation effort to restore the building. Artists in Our Community W

auwatosa is a community full of artists, with many earning recognition on the local, national and international level. Art in all forms has been a major facet in the Wauwatosa community for years, which is evidenced in the quality galleries, local theatrical and musical troupes and preservation programs such as the Wauwatosa Historical Society’s award-winning Tosa High Project (an initiative that identified and restored historic 1930s murals found hidden under plaster in the original high school’s lobby). Each spring, art-lovers have a chance to stroll the Village and Milwaukee’s West Side businesses during Artwalk, an event featuring original artwork for sale by prominent local artists. The Firefly Art Fair is held every summer in the gardens of the KneelandWalker House, a restored 1890s Victorian mansion now in use as the Wauwatosa Historical Society’s home. The Wauwatosa Historical Society also presents the Plein Air Affair, an outdoor painting competition and sale for adults and children, adding to the rich variety of art based activities community members can enjoy.

At the primary and secondary level, families may choose from a wide variety of award-winning public, charter and private schools. A leader in public education, the Wauwatosa School District provides outstanding academic programming to approximately 7,400 K4-12 students. The district employs an exceptional, professional faculty and staff who provide an outstanding education throughout its nine traditional elementary schools, Wauwatosa Montessori elementary school, two middle schools and two high schools. The School of the Trades offers a mix of academic curricula with technical and employmentoriented classes. The Wauwatosa School District is truly a cornerstone in the community. All schools have music and art classes, and a variety of electives are available in the middle and high schools. Enhancing the student experience beyond the classroom is just as important. Students take advantage of a wide range of extracurricular clubs and activities, including Lego Leagues, competitive sports, forensics and theater. The district also manages several schools within the Milwaukee County Medical Complex, including River Hills School, Plank Road School and the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin School Program. In 1990, the Education Foundation of Wauwatosa (EFW) was formed by a group of community and business leaders to strengthen and support the overall educational quality of the Wauwatosa School District. The organization provides funding to teachers and schools with creative and innovative ideas, and encourages new approaches to excellence in education. The EFW’s annual walk/run is a community-wide event with participants from every school in the district.
