elcome to the village of West Milwaukee. Our village slogan says it well in stating a “proud past and a promising future.” In the history of the village, smoke stacks were very prominent because of the industrial heritage but as the years progressed and the industrial revolution took place, those stacks were replaced by the development that brought about a different image to our village. New roads were to replace aging infrastructure and then retail and commercial businesses were our new neighbors. Being just over one square mile in size, our village is actually the smallest of the suburbs in Milwaukee County, but our advantage is that the village is located in the center of the county; therefore minutes away from downtown Milwaukee, the Wisconsin State Fairgrounds, Milwaukee County Zoo, Maier Festival grounds,

Our neighbors include restaurants such as Rocky Rococo, Chili’s, McDonalds, Panda Express and Wal-Mart along with two new strip malls on the horizon, and our retail businesses include Target, Pick-n-Save, Menards and Firestone. Certainly we can’t forget our residential neighborhoods that still maintain the quality of housing that we insist and look for. As a member of the joint school district of West Allis/West Milwaukee, there is Pershing Elementary and West Milwaukee Intermediate Schools that we are very proud of. We also have West Milwaukee Park, situated right in the heart of the village. This park is well maintained by Milwaukee County and enjoyed by many of our residents and neighbors to the village. he suburban communities of West Allis and West Milwaukee are ideally positioned within the heart of the Milwaukee Metropolitan Area, just 11 minutes southwest of downtown Milwaukee. Interstate 94 bounds the area on the north, which connects the suburban communities with the neighboring big city. Wisconsin Highway 59 travels through both West Allis and West Milwaukee, while Interstate 894 and U.S. Route 45 run along the western side of West Allis. Alternative transportation options are also readily available for commuters and travelers in the area. The Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) operates in West Allis and West Milwaukee, offering several convenient and affordable bus routes to major destinations throughout the county. Commuter rail service is supplied through Amtrak in nearby Milwaukee, which makes daily stops at the Intermodal Station (433 W. St. Paul Ave.) and General Mitchell International Airport. Reachable within 20 minutes, General Mitchell provides a number of daily non-stop flights to cities across the U.S. and beyond. The area is also served by the Hank Aaron Trail, providing a recreational and commuter bike trail connecting West Allis and West Milwaukee all the way to Downtown Milwaukee.

Adjacent to West Allis’s bustling downtown district is the 200-acre, year-round entertainment venue known as Wisconsin State Fair Park. This historic venue attracts nearly 3 million people each year who come to enjoy hundreds of events, including the annual 11-day Wisconsin State Fair, at the park’s various facilities. The area has taken great lengths in recent years to enhance existing commercial and industrial business corridors. Notable efforts are seen from Summit Place Office Complex to the Renaissance Faire to the central business district and in various neighborhood commercial intersections, which continue to experience upgrades thanks to an array of federal, state and local incentive programs. These financial programs encourage property transformations, business expansion, and ultimately business creation in the West Allis and West Milwaukee communities. With investments such as these, there is no doubt that the already healthy local economy will continue to thrive today and well into the future.

est Allis-West Milwaukee Schools are an integral part of the community’s continuing success. In partnership with parents, businesses and residents, the school system strives to provide an educational program that allows all students to attain academic excellence. Our educators are accomplishing this in a variety of ways, some of the most important of which are the ongoing use of data, staff development opportunities and a willingness to listen and respond to community concerns.

What is educational excellence is very much determined by parents and community. In response to parental requests, the district researched the needs and benefits of full-day and four-year-old kindergarten opportunities. When research confirmed that they were in the best interest of children and community, the district began implementing those options. West Allis-West Milwaukee Schools has earned its second consecutive U.S. Department of Education “No Child Left Behind-Blue Ribbon Award” when Walker Elementary School was given this honor in November 2009. The district also was recognized by Milwaukee Magazine in the spring of 2012 as the Number One Overperforming School District in the Milwaukee Area, placed #17 on Forbes magazine’s “Top 20 Places to Educate Your Child”, and has been recognized with 33 “Wisconsin Promise School of Recognition” The WAWM Schools was also recognized by both the Business Journal and The Daily Reporter for our revenue generating facilities located at 1135 and 1205 South 70th Street.

Instructional excellence isn’t the only mark of a great school system. Other attributes common to West Allis-West Milwaukee Schools are the commitment to technology and a variety of academic and co-curricular opportunities. The Bring Your Own Device and iPad initiatives are new for 2012-13. WAWM Schools has a variety of such opportunities offered to its students. Comprehensive programming is provided to all, and special instruction is available to gifted, creative and talented students, children with exceptional needs, the at-risk population and others with unique needs. The West Allis-West Milwaukee School District serves West Allis and West Milwaukee and runs the recreational activities for our communities. Here, students take advantage of associate’s degree and four-year college transfer degree programs, along with various certificate, diploma and apprentice programs. Busy adults and working professionals are also offered plenty of options for returning to school through MATC, as well as through the satellite campuses of Marian University’s Milwaukee Center in West Allis, Lakeland College’s Milwaukee Campus in West Allis and Upper Iowa University Center, which is positioned just one mile north of West Allis. The area recently welcomed another addition to its higher learning community. Concordia University Wisconsin chose to combine its Milwaukee South and Hales Corner Centers into one campus, located at the new Miller Park Way Center in West Milwaukee. The local site offers several adult education degree programs, along with a Medical Assistant Program.

Columbia St. Mary’s is sponsored by Ascension Health and includes several hospitals and many community clinics, two of which are located in West Allis. Both West Allis and Gateway Medical clinics are conveniently located and provide an array of services. Staff offers the latest technology and innovative treatments within a nurturing environment of support and compassion for patients and their families. Froedtert Hospital operates the Lincoln Avenue clinic in West Allis which is a primary care clinic. Its specialties include endocrinology, family and internal medicine, general surgery, nephrology, obstetrics/gynecology, urology and a breast clinic. Froedtert is committed to maintaining the highest standard of patient care, while holding costs below market averages. The Greater Milwaukee Free Clinic provides free medical care and pharmaceuticals to low income, working people in the Milwaukee area without medical insurance or the ability to pay for medical care. Protecting the Public’s Health The West Allis Health Department serves to protect and promote the health of West Allis citizens. Established in 1906, the Health Department improves the health status of its citizens through services focused on prevention, communitywide education and assuring a healthy living environment. The Health Department protects the community from communicable disease outbreaks and environmental hazards and provides dental health services, health education programs and preventative health services. The Health Department is located at 7120 West National Avenue and is open from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday-Friday. The West Allis Senior Center is also part of the Health Department. This Center promotes a healthy quality of life where aging is viewed as natural, positive and purposeful, and provides services that focus on the recreational, social and personal needs of elderly residents. The Senior Center offers more than 30 classes each week, interesting tours each month and many other special events and guest speakers. The Center is one of the designated Milwaukee County senior meal sites and boasts a well-equipped computer center for member’s use. The Center is located at 7001 West National Avenue and is open from 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday.

In addition to health and senior services, the West Allis Health Department oversees the operations of the West Allis Farmers’ Market. This Market is one of the oldest established farmers’ markets in Wisconsin and has operated continuously for the past 80 years at 6501 West National Avenue, in the heart of the Six Points redevelopment area. It’s also considered a “green” market because all products must be grown or produced locally. The Farmers’ Market is open every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from May through November. In addition, the Market is home to “Marketplace” on Sundays. This is a huge outdoor flea market where people rent the market stalls for a nominal fee to sell their wares.

West Allis and West Milwaukee are proud to have the Family Resource Center in their community. The first Center opened March 12, 1998. The Center is located at Apostle Presbyterian Church (in the back off the alley) 1509 South 76th Street. The Family Resource Center encourages choice, responsibility and independence by providing games, toys, videos, books and parent resource information. These items can be checked out from our Lending Library. The Family Drop-In Program provides the opportunity for families to come together in a comfortable and creative environment and enjoy free-choice play, art activities, individual and group games, circle time and a snack. School readiness activities are also incorporated into the schedule. Grandparents and caregivers are welcome.

Sisterhood of West Allis & West Milwaukee Collaboration between the WAWM Family Resource Center & WAWM Chamber of Commerce. The Mission of the Sisterhood is to provide leadership in our community to encourage young girls to be strong, selfconfident, independent and proud of who they are as individuals and happy in their own skin. The Center offers several parenting workshops, family activities, field trips, holiday parties and children workshops throughout the year. The Center also has a â&#x20AC;&#x153;Calling All Dadsâ&#x20AC;? program (for children one to eight years) that offers activities for dads, grandpas, father figures and step dads to come together with their children. The main intentions of the Family Resource Center are to help end parental isolation, empower families to help themselves to better parent their children and to promote community activities for families.

The Sisterhood will raise funds and secure sponsors for events and activities that promote programs for young girls. The Sisterhood will provide mentorship for young girls in our community and help to support the relationships between young girls and their mothers (or mother-figures). The Sisterhood will collaborate with those businesses and organizations in the community that have programs for girls and help to bring these valuable resources to as many girls as possible.

The focus of the Sisterhood of West Allis & West Milwaukee will also be to have fun being “girls” and meeting to support each other, laugh out loud, maybe cry a few tears, but, most of all, to enjoy life as a “girl.” (Thank you to the WAWM School District, Village of West Milwaukee, Southwest YMCA, West Allis WAC, Village at Manor Park, Apostle Presbyterian Church and Knights of Columbus for donating space for our program.)

WAWM Chamber Education Foundation The WAWM Chamber Education Foundation is a nonprofit community organization formed by the WAWM Chamber of Commerce that has a primary focus of providing a bridge between the business community and the schools. The mission is to ensure students are prepared for lifelong learning. This is done by raising charitable dollars through direct contributions and distributing these resources to support programs that nurture, enhance and provide a quality, tangible learning experience for students in the West Allis/West Milwaukee community. Programs are also provided through the Foundation that link students directly to the business community. The Foundation partners with businesses and the educational community to promote programs that offer applied business and vocational experiences. The Foundation targets learning experiences, which strengthen opportunities for students to gain employment skills or advancement into higher education, either college or vocational/technical training.

WAWM Operation: Families First Behind every military member there is a family. In our community we now have a program that will bring those families to the forefront. Operation: Families First is an innovative program in West Allis and West Milwaukee that will provide support and resources to Military Families, as well as recognize and honor the Military Members and Veterans from our community at an annual event. The organizations provides: • Connection to local resources • Benefits information • Updates on military specials • Care packages • Special events and activities • Support groups • Literature on mission readiness, deployments and reunions • Outreach to schools
