EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR WELCOME

C

ongratulations! You’ve just found a valuable resource to help you build your local business, or to fully enjoy the wonderful opportunities offered by the West Columbia River Gorge. The Board, staff and membership of the West Columbia Gorge Chamber are proud to be at your service. With its strategic positioning at the Western mouth of the scenic Columbia River Gorge, our Chamber is ideally situated to make the wonders of the Gorge available to East County and to the Portland metropolitan area, as well as to our many visitors from around the world. Our service area comprises the small “river” communities of Troutdale, Wood Village, Fairview and Cascade Locks, as well as the unincorporated areas of Corbett, Springdale, Multnomah Falls, Bridal Veil, and surrounding areas. The cities that we serve share a “small-town America” feel that emphasizes community, caring and sharing. We are proud of the wonderful area we live in, and we look forward to sharing that with our neighbors and visitors. Much of our Chamber’s emphasis is on tourism; we hold the state-assigned “Destination Marketing Organization” (DMO) designation for the West end of the Gorge. In that capacity, we work with our adjoining sister Chambers and other tourism organizations, from Gresham through the

Eastern end of the Gorge. Beyond tourism, we promote regional economic development through our strong activities in helping to promote advanced manufacturing throughout East County, and we work closely with our outstanding local educational institutions, such as Mt. Hood Community College and the Center for Advanced Learning (CAL). We are also active participants in our local governments, where we fill a crucial role in informing and giving a business voice to our local members and citizens. We’re glad you found us, and we are eager to support you in any way we can. Call or email us to let us know how we can help you, or – better yet – come to our lovely Visitor Center in scenic downtown Troutdale, where you’ll experience the personalized care for which we are well-known. Enjoy! With a warm welcome,

Claude Cruz Claude Cruz Executive Director

OVERVIEW & HISTORY: West Columbia Gorge

T

he West Columbia River Gorge spans a 30-mile stretch that starts just 15 minutes east of major cosmopolitan center Portland. While the proximity to the big city provides countless amenities to these communities, the cities within the West Columbia Gorge offer their own culture, history and local color. An unparalleled quality of life, rife with idyllic scenery and rugged mountain terrain, along with easy access to recreation, healthcare, education and more, bring 1.4 millionplus visitors to this area annually. In 2009, National Geographic’s Traveler magazine deemed the West Columbia Gorge as the second most beautiful destination in North America and sixth in the world!

CITY OF CASCADE LOCKS

The West Columbia River Gorge is home to five distinct communities in east Multnomah County and west Hood River County – Cascade Locks, unincorporated Corbett, Fairview, Troutdale and Wood Village – all served by the West Columbia Gorge Chamber of Commerce.

CORBETT

Located 40 miles east of Portland, the City of Cascade Locks sparkles in the heart of the Columbia River Gorge, the only designated National Scenic Area in the U.S. The city projects some of the most spectacular views in the Pacific Northwest. With a population just over 1,100, the city is very modestly sized, but don’t let its size fool you – Cascade Locks has much to offer in the way of culture and heritage. It is the site of international sailing competitions, it hosts the welcoming Thunder Island Brewery, it is home to the galleries and studios of renowned bronze sculptors and other artists, and its native fish market offers a connection with the area’s proud native American heritage.

With a larger population of nearly 4,000, the rural community of Corbett spreads through the foothills and mountains between the Sandy River and Crown Point, a promontory renowned for its vistas. Corbett rests just 

20 miles east of Portland overlooking the mouth of the Columbia River Gorge. The area’s superb recreation and fishing opportunities keep residents and visitors busy all year long. The community enjoys a median household income almost $30,000 higher than the state average, and an ideal location between the great outdoors and the great City of Portland.

CITY OF FAIRVIEW City leadership and the 9,900 residents of Fairview have set their sights on preserving and creating livability. By setting aside more acreage for wetlands, open spaces, trails and parks than any other city in the Portland metropolitan area, the city has groomed a landscape that appeals to long-time residents and newcomers alike. Fairview promotes start-ups and existing business with an impressive menu of marketable commercial and industrial land backed by city services.

CITY OF TROUTDALE Troutdale, the Gateway to the Gorge, is the largest and oldest city in the West Columbia Gorge, with a population that has ballooned to about 16,000, up 15.5 percent since 2000. Such growth has not been an accident. The city supports a thriving downtown of one-ofa-kind stores and restaurants at the gateway to scenery, nature, culture and outdoor recreation. Troutdale is also home to major industrial development in the Troutdale Reynolds Industrial Park, and it offers a variety of overnight accommodations and dining experiences. Troutdale also hosts

the gallery of internationally-renowned bronze sculptor rip Caswell, as well as other captivating galleries.

CITY OF WOOD VILLAGE Nestled in between Fairview and Troutdale, Wood Village was born in World War II to accommodate workers at the nearby Reynolds Metals Aluminum plant. Though its population today is a modest 3,200, the city’s rich history has spurred growth and diversity through the years – the city has even seen a 12.2 percent population increase since 2000. With an entrepreneurial spirit and a climate accommodating of new business ventures, the small city largely appeals to businesspeople who don’t like to get lost in the crowd of densely urban areas, yet all the amenities, resources and services of a major metropolitan area are close at hand. 

TOURISM

T

he West Columbia Gorge Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Center serves as the state-appointed “Destination Marketing Organization” (DMO) for the western end of the Columbia River Gorge. In this capacity, the Chamber helps our member Cities properly showcase the many attractions and opportunities that our area has to offer. We work closely with our fellow Chambers and tourism organizations throughout the Gorge, and in East Multnomah County. Our Chamber promotes tourism on behalf of the Cities within our service area: Troutdale, Wood Village, Cascade Locks, and the unincorporated areas nearby. In addition, the City of Fairview has very recently elected to become part of our DMO region. We are actively helping that City to develop its “identity”, just as we have done for our other member Cities.

Visitors to our fair region will see that each of our Cities offers a unique spirit and a diverse set of attractions – while also sharing a common appearance and atmosphere of “small-town America”. You’ll enjoy your visit to our area, where people are still friendly and eager to ensure a memorable experience for our visitors!

SHOPPING Shopping options are plentiful in the West Columbia Gorge, especially in downtown Troutdale where the ambiance is accentuated by quaint boutiques and specialty shops. A few of the many shops in Troutdale that set the city apart include Ali Peret Designs, Bev Frank Antiques, Caswell Gallery, Columbia River Gallery, Celebrate Me Home, Troutdale Antique Mall and the Troutdale General Store. The West Columbia Gorge is also home to Columbia Gorge Premium Outlets, perfect for bargain shoppers. Here you will find a fine collection of name-brand outlet stores offering savings of 25 to 65 percent every day. The development features 45 stores, including Adidas, Bass Shoes, Carter’s, Eddie Bauer Outlet, Guess Factory Store, Jones New York, OshKosh B’Gosh, Tommy Hilfiger, Van Heusen and more. Gifts, housewares, accessories, shoes, fashions and more are right at your fingertips at Columbia Gorge Premium Outlets, located at 450 NW 257th Way in Troutdale.

DINING With Portland being a hub of culinary creation, it’s no wonder why the West Columbia Gorge is filled with interesting and unique eateries and boasts of new brewpubs and lounges serving tantalizing libations. The area is home to such ethnic restaurants as Italian and Chinese, as well as good old-fashioned pub food and familiar chain restaurants, too.

LODGING With so much to take in at this wooded riverside string of communities, make it a point to stay a while. There are numerous RV parks and campgrounds for those who wish to reconnect with nature, but for those who prefer the great indoors, there are historic hotels and bed and breakfasts aplenty. Check the West Columbia Gorge Chamber of Commerce website at www. westcolumbiagorgechamber.com for an inclusive list of the area’s accommodations.

to all who come to look on the splendor of the scene.” Other prime hiking spots in the area include Guy W. Talbot State Park, George W. Joseph State Natural Area, Rooster Rock State Park, Blue Lake Regional Park, Lewis and Clark State Park, and Dabney State Recreation Area. Visitors can also marvel at the many waterfalls in the area, for the Columbia River Gorge is home to the highest concentration of waterfalls in North America. Multnomah Falls, second in height only to Yosemite Falls, shares the spotlight with Horsetail Falls, Triple Falls, Ponytail Falls, Punchbowl Falls and several others. The West Columbia Gorge never skimps on majestic vistas; here, tranquility and recreation abound.

RECREATION Fishing, boating and hiking are just some of the numerous recreation options to take advantage of in the area. With easy access to the Columbia and Sandy rivers, fishing and boating is made enjoyable and accessible. The West Columbia Gorge is home to a wide variety of fish, including trout, bass, perch, crappie, catfish, sturgeon, steelhead, whitefish, shad and salmon. East of Corbett is Crown Point State Park, a wonderful hiking destination and home to the Crown Point Vista House, a historic observatory that “affords shelter and comfort 2015 Community Guide & Business Directory

CORBETT SCHOOL DISTRICT CORBETT HIGH SCHOOL Faculty and staff are committed to seeing the highest potential developed in every student. Curriculum is built around the College Board’s Advanced Placement program with learning standards both rigorous and in-depth. Corbett’s AP courses are carefully designed to stretch students and engage their minds and imaginations, and to accommodate the learning needs of all Corbett students, not just the elite. In Corbett we call this approach “AP for all”, and it means that every student enrolled in Corbett High School deserves the chance to

work with big ideas and achieve their fullest potential. To do less would be to shirk our moral responsibility to our students. Corbett High School is also devoted to empowering students to develop their full array of talents. The band has consistently ranked among the top ten bands in its league for a decade. Corbett’s fine art students routinely earn college credit for their work in the visual arts. Corbett students are able to compete in a large array of competitive athletic activities. CAPS: CORBETT ARTS PROGRAM WITH SPANISH All classrooms are multi-age and embrace the continuous progress model already present in Corbett Schools on the main campus. Ideally, students stay with the same teacher for three years before moving on to the next level. Arts are integrated across the curriculum. All students receive classroom instruction in the regular disciplines infused with arts education as well as specific music instruction and Spanish instruction. ‘The arts’ is a broad domain that includes visual arts, drama, dance, and music and is used as a lens through which to view and understand the world and age appropriate curriculum as defined by the state.

Relevance will be achieved through pairing students with mentors from the industry, and pairing each student with a teacher who will serve as a counselor. The ACE Academy welcomes high school students from all achievement levels who have completed the requirements for entrance into grade 11. Students who thrive in hands-on curriculum find the academy especially attractive. ARCHITECT – Appealing to students with a propensity for creativity, design and aesthetics. Students learn the qualities of the successful architect; including math, science and English and will be prepared to enter university professional programs CONSTRUCTION – Math and science come to life as students learn how to survey land, frame, build steps, weld, wire circuits and more! This course gives an overview of the 17 professions in the construction trades area including preparation, training, working conditions, career paths and the future of the trades. ENGINEERING – ACE’s nationally recognized “Project Lead the Way” curriculum challenges students to problem

solve and critically think about real design problems – while creating fun engineering solutions! Students employ engineering and scientific concepts in the solution of engineering design problems using a state of the art 3D solid modeling design software package. Students also pursue in-depth and hands-on knowledge of major engineering careers such as civil, mechanical and electrical as well as learn about communication, systems, analysis, design, and research. CENTER FOR ADVANCED LEARNING Opened in 2002, the Center for Advanced Learning (CAL) is a public charter high school program located within the GreshamBarlow School District boundary. Focused on career technical education, CAL offers students access to transferable credits for both high school and college. Last year alone, more than 3,414 college credits were awarded to CAL students for free! CAL business partners mentor students both in and outside of the classroom. Seniors can complete up to 50 hours (often more) of work-site experience. Juniors and seniors can access industry certification and the National Career Readiness Certificate. Our goal is to guide students to produce a resume built upon experiences gained through CAL classes, their college coursework, their work experience, and by obtaining certifications before completing high school. Participating High School students from Centennial, Gresham-Barlow and Reynolds school districts interested in CAL choose from one of our industry-driven and college-accredited program areas: Computer Information Systems, Digital Media & Design, Mechanical Engineering & Manufacturing, or Health Sciences: Medical or Dental. CAL juniors and seniors spend half of their “home” High School day at CAL, which allows them to maintain their commitment to core subjects not offered at CAL, sports and other student activities. Students can begin the CAL application process as early as December of their sophomore year. Current juniors may also apply to participate at CAL during their senior year. 
