Illinois’ Six Existing Nuclear Energy Plants Generate 48% of the State’s Electric Supply. Constantly upgraded with the latest technology, these state-of-the-art plants generate energy on a 24/7 basis, helping ensure the reliability of our electric system.
Since nuclear energy is carbon free, the plants are able to generate half our state’s electricity without emitting any air pollution, which is good for all of us.
They also generate 5,900 direct jobs and 21,700 additional jobs across a full range of industries and inject nearly $9 billion into our state’s economy each year.

Welcome
S
ince late 2000 I have had the pleasure of serving the business community in and around Western DuPage County. There have been many changes, not the least of which was the strategic partnership of the Winfield, Warrenville and West Chicago Chambers of Commerce and the creation of the Western DuPage Chamber of Commerce. One thing has not changed in the over twenty years that I have been associated with the chamber as a member and then as the CEO; this is the only organization that does the important and exclusive work of serving local businesses. Providing advocacy for our businesses is a trademark of the chamber. Local, County, State and even Federal issues have and continue to create challenges for commerce and remaining on the front line has never been more important. Workforce development is also very important in order for our communities to attract and retain quality employees and remain competitive in supporting and attracting companies regionally. The WDCC continues to provide skills development as well as applying for and receiving grant awards for our members. As marketing and promotional options for business continue to grow and change, the chamber also takes a lead role in connecting businesses with customers and with valuable business partners
through a variety of traditional and e-marketing options. Website, email, print and news marketing are all included for member businesses that benefit from these media venues. Small, medium, large and the very large member businesses will all benefit from an association with the chamber. Whether you are an entrepreneur, professional service provider, tradesman/contractor or operate an at-home business, there is something for you. Human resource professionals can gain continuing education credits and factory workers can receive OSHA forklift training and even 10-hours safety certification right at the chamber office. Business can be fun! I have never met a successful and prosperous business person that didn’t know how to have fun and regularly create opportunities for themselves and those around them to laugh. We too recognize that a little play during the workday can have a tremendous ROI. Golf, business afterhours or a casual lunch & learn fills the social side for our members each and every month. I am honored to serve you and wish you the very best success! Sincerely, David J. Sabathné – IOM President / CEO

est Chicago is a diverse, family-oriented community with a rich cultural mix and a heritage. It is the first Illinois community established by the railroads and continues to be a convenient transportation hub served by three major rail lines, Illinois’ third-busiest airport and three state highways. West Chicago offers excellent schools, a growing industrial park and convenient access to parks, shopping and restaurants. The City of West Chicago features approximately 700 businesses including retail, commercial and service businesses, as well as professional offices, manufacturing and warehouse uses. Businesses range from small family-run operations to large multi-national corporations such as General Mills and Ball Horticultural Company. The DuPage Airport, strategically located along the border of DuPage and Kane Counties in West Chicago, serves a diverse business community of manufacturing, retail, government, warehousing and distribution, and health care industries. A designated reliever airport to O’Hare and Midway, DuPage Airport is an aviation community where business thrives. The local economy is strong with the City of West Chicago’s location along major thoroughfares with high visibility – North Avenue, Illinois Route 64; Neltnor Boulevard, Illinois Route 59, Roosevelt Road, Illinois Route 38 – access to rail transportation, and DuPage Airport facilities contributing to desirability for new businesses.
10
The Western DuPage Chamber has been awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars in grants that were given to our local businesses for workforce development and training.
There are many industrial expansions and the absorption rates of vacant commercial and industrial spaces is much improved, according to Mayor Ruben Pineda, who notes the City is doing well financially, due in part to sales and income tax receipts near prerecession levels combined with prudent spending practices. West Chicago fosters a business-supportive environment with a streamlined permitting process focused on customer service and ongoing communications. Business assistance and various programs include: Downtown Retail and Restaurant Business grant program, Brilliance in Business awards program, creative and customized business incentives, facade improvement program, infrastructure investment, and beautification programs. The City of West Chicago (population 27,086) was ranked 16th in the latest listing by real estate brokerage firm Movoto as the safest places in the state of Illinois. West Chicago also made it on the list of top 100 Safest Cities in America earlier this year by Location, Inc. creators of the neighborhood research site, NeighborhoodScout. West Chicago is an eclectic city, offering housing options which range from affordable apartments and quaint bungalows, to delicately restored old Victorians and stately custom-built manor homes. Beautifully preserved and revived buildings house local businesses and tell the story of the community’s individual identity and personality. In the heart of the downtown area, the West Chicago City Museum offers visitors a peek at the City’s rich history. An arts center features community

research, programs, education and exhibits. Local arts lovers frequent Gallery 200, a cultural initiative supported by the City of West Chicago and People Made Visible, to buy and browse local art and for enjoying events such as featured artist opening receptions, local music nights and gallery theater productions. Gateway Centre is the City’s eastern gateway commercial district, located west of Illinois Route 59 on Main Street. The area bridges new development with historic downtown amenities and includes a mixed use of retail, lofts and condominium units. It is just steps away from the West Chicago Metra station. West Chicago Mayor Ruben Pineda wants many things for his community, and at the top of the list is the overall wellness of its people. Obesity has become a national epidemic across

average. Backing him up is a wide circle of leadership from all corners of the community. A collective effort that engages residents, elected officials, schools, faith communities, hospitals, park district, library, restaurants and other local businesses is critical in creating this overall culture of wellness. A long-range plan specifically tailored for the community with the goal of increasing awareness for healthy eating and increased opportunities for physical activity is known as Healthy West Chicago. The initiative seeks to help residents make the healthy choice the easy choice. arrenville has a history rich in the American tradition. Located approximately 30 miles west of Chicago, Warrenville is known as a small, hometown refuge nestled in the center of the DuPage research and development corridor along I-88. Settled in 1833 and incorporated in 1967, Warrenville today boasts a population of 13,140. The community offers a variety of housing options from large acre-plus lots to mid-to-low density neighborhoods, to upscale townhomes and luxury apartments. Residents cite the relatively low cost of living and housing as advantages to living in Warrenville. The City of Warrenville's location at the Winfield Road interchange on I-88, which connects to a network of county and state roads, draws businesses to Warrenville. Of nearly 435 licensed businesses, Warrenville boasts an array of corporate offices, approximately 40 manufacturing/industrial type businesses, and many small businesses. Warrenville’s location, transportation network, demographics, workforce, public services, quality of life amenities, and pro-business climate are essential for success, according to City Administrator John

The Western DuPage Chamber provides over 40 opportunities per year to network with our members and 10 of those events are with other surrounding chambers.
Coakley, who notes that the City of Warrenville has been debt free since 2000 and has established a diversified revenue stream. Warrenville prides itself on being a business friendly, progressive small town with a proven commitment of working with the business and development community in a professional and helpful manner for new business development and expansion of existing ones. This commitment resulted in a public-private partnership to facilitate the redevelopment of the 650-acre former quarry into the world class mixeduse Cantera development at the I-88/Winfield Road interchange. Over the past 18 months, new businesses, collectively with over 800 employees, have moved to Cantera, including Main Event Entertainment, and Specialty’s Café and Bakery. The complex also includes a Regal Cinema multiplex movie theater and Main Event Entertainment complex, hotels, a world class fitness center, corporate office buildings, dozens of restaurants including RockBottom Restaurant, Buffalo Wild Wings, McDonald’s, Eddie Merlot’s Steakhouse, retail stores such as Target, the CDH Proton Center and Cadence Cancer Center, and a variety of service establishments. More recently, Warrenville implemented the Old Town/Civic Center TIF District to help stimulate new private investment and facilitate high quality development and redevelopment within the 177-acre Old Town/Civic Center core area of the community. Warrenville’s population is diverse, with nearly 22 percent identified as Hispanic. Incomes are strong, with nearly 32 percent of households exceeding $100,000. The median age (37.3) and household size (2.7) indicate

the presence of families in their highest spending years, reflecting Warrenville’s strong family orientation. Located on the banks of the West Branch of the DuPage River, one of Warrenville’s best features
is its ability to incorporate the natural landscape into the fabric of the town, with the most trails per capita among DuPage communities. Workforce Training & Development
T
he training and skill development needs of local business and industry providers in the Western DuPage area are changing. “Local employers tell us critical skill training in areas like conflict resolution, creative thinking and technical training are vital to help employees move up within their organization,” says Evelyn Canabal, owner/lead trainer with Professional Development Services. “Training needs are increasing as employers scramble to comply with new laws and safety requirements, and to facilitate ongoing professional development training.” The same holds true for other types of business and industrial employers, says Canabal, who is a long-time member of the Western DuPage Chamber. “The Chamber,” she reports, “is committed to filling the certification, training and skill development void to help both members and non-members fulfill training needs within the local community.” “From improving business production, to increasing employee morale, and leadership skill development, the Western DuPage Chamber is on the leading edge facilitating and offering training,” states Canabal.”There’s no need to go downtown or to expensive out-of-the-area venues when the needed training can be completed right in our own backyard.” Lolly Frederick, president of Training Plus, a 17-year Chamber member and former 25-year employee of College of DuPage/BPI/Corporate Training, says “manufacturing has experienced changes set forth by OSHA creating an increased focus on local OSHA compliance training. We’re seeing an increasing need for specialized forklift certification, OSHA training, CPR, and safety training in areas such as lock-out tag-out, and blood-borne pathogens. “As manufacturing is transformed by new technology there is an ever-increasing need for a highly skilled, specialized workforce capable of using new technology to execute complex operations. Currently the manufacturing sector is facing potential retirement of their long term process knowledge experts. In order to prepare for this transition companies are facing the need to be proactive by training younger, new employees in order to continue reaching their goals in this ever changing global competitiveness.” According to Frederick, the Western DuPage
28
Chamber is at the forefront and leader in providing business corporate training in their West Chicago training center and within the local community. Since 2009, the Chamber has actively assisted local businesses applying for State of Illinois’ Department of Economic Development (ETIP) grants funding multi-company employer training investment programs, offering reimbursement of up to 50 percent of the hourly wage for internal trainers or external skills training. The organization also partners with the Illinois Chamber of Commerce to promote local training programs and training seminars on a vast array of topics ranging from payroll and human resources compliance to new employer regulations and law. Additional local training programs offered through providers such as College of DuPage and Elgin Community College help meet the ongoing needs of a booming Western DuPage workforce. Agencies such as workNet DuPage in nearby Lisle, also offer various employment, career, and workforce development services to job seekers and businesses of DuPage County. On tap for the Western DuPage Chamber’s 2015 calendar is a full series of results-oriented critical skills training programs, OSHA safety training, lean manufacturing training, and forklift certification programs, as well as classes on blueprint reading, and English for the workplace.
