LOCATION Wimberley is located in central Hays County, between Austin and San Antonio, about 17 miles from San Marcos, 170 miles from Houston and 200 miles from Dallas/Fort Worth. Relaxing and scenic drives in the country include RR 12 from San Marcos through Wimberley to Dripping Springs, the Devil’s Backbone on Hwy 32 from Wimberley to Blanco and on RM 2325 from Wimberley to Blanco. “Wimberley,” or the Wimberley Valley, includes the incorporated City of Wimberley and the City of Woodcreek, as well as most of central and western Hays County. These areas are within Postal ZIP Code 78676 and receive mail addressed to Wimberley, Texas.

NATURAL WONDERS AND THINGS TO DO The geographic center and the aesthetic heart of the Wimberley Valley is located at the confluence of Cypress Creek and the Blanco River. In addition to the bald cypress and pecan trees that line the riverbanks, cedar, oak and grasses grow in shallow, clay loams on the area slopes and beaches. The natural beauty of the softly winding Blanco River, shaded Cypress Creek and the stunning views of Lone Man Creek call to artists, retired folks and anyone seeking escape from city life. The Texas Hill Country is unique and special, and the Wimberley Valley is nestled right in the heart of it all. Located in the central flyway for migrating birds and sitting atop the Edwards Plateau, where a huge variety of natural fauna can be found, it’s a perfect place for anyone who loves nature. In the spring, a symphony of Texas wildflowers turns the hillsides and roadsides into a riot of colors, and Wimberley is right in the heart of the most scenic wildflower locations in the state. Wimberley has been a retreat for artists, musicians and writers for many years, and hosts the popular Lions Market Day. From March through December, it brings visitors from all over the country every first Saturday of the month to the 495-plus booths of art and wares. Summer attracts vacationers seeking escape from the bustle of the city with festivals, river and water activities, art shows, shopping, wine-tasting, local dining and fabulous places to stay. Most visitors come to enjoy the peace and natural beauty of the area. The climate and setting make Wimberley a desirable place to live and a favorite vacation getaway. Visitors also choose Wimberley as a central location near many other popular Hill Country attractions.

CLIMATE Summers in Wimberley are hot and winters are mild and the area averages 300 days of sunshine a year. The annual average rainfall is 37 inches but can vary from as little as 14 to as much as 60 inches. Average frost dates are from November 30 through March 2. Come prepared for anything because Texas weather is unpredictable.

GEOGRAPHY Wimberley is situated in the Blanco River Valley where Cypress Creek flows into the Blanco. Extensive deposits of limestone make up the white rocks and white stream bottoms common to the area. It is about 1,000 feet above sea level on the Edwards Plateau, with elevations ranging from 850 feet to more than 1,300 feet.

POPULATION It’s difficult to establish a population figure for the Wimberley Valley, but the City of Wimberley has about 2,740 residents, the City of Woodcreek has about 1,450 and approximately 14,000 people live in the entire area covered by ZIP Code 78676. d

When Winters died in 1864, ownership of his mills was passed on to his son-in-law, John Cude. Cude rebuilt the saw mill, which had been damaged in a flood, and the settlement became known as Cude’s Mill. Pleasant Wimberley moved to Cude’s Mill from Blanco County in the 1870s, bringing with him his large family. Wimberley bought the mill complex from John Cude, changing the community’s name once again. This time, it was Wimberley’s Mill.

efore the 19th century, the history of Wimberley was that of the native tribes that roamed the countryside setting up semipermanent camps along the streams. The area doesn’t boast any cave paintings or cliff art from these early residents, but one can still find evidence of their tenure in the stone tools that they left behind and in the charred limestone of their campfire sites. Fish and game were plentiful, with buffalo and deer in abundance.

In 1880, the town applied for a post office and submitted the name “Wimberleyville” to the Post Office Department, which quickly dropped the “ville” from the name, and the town became Wimberley. At that time Wimberley was home to four mills and a cotton gin. The mills were passed down through the Wimberley family and sold to John Will Pyland in 1907. By 1912, there was not enough water flow in Cypress Creek to support the mills and a gasoline engine was installed. The mill, located on the site of the present Ozona National Bank, operated until 1925.

As a result of the Texas Revolution in 1836 and the period of the Republic from 1836 to 1845, veterans of Texas’ conflicts received bounties in the form of land in Central Texas. Settlers started moving into the Hill Country after 1845 because the land was available and cheap, and the numerous springs and streams made the area attractive for small farms and ranches. In 1846, San Marcos was newly incorporated and claimed fewer than 500 inhabitants. Seventeen miles to the northwest was the small community of Glendale. This village of hardy, generally poor settlers would one day become Wimberley. William C. Winters, a veteran of the Battle of San Jacinto, moved with his family into the Blanco River valley right after 1850. Winters immediately saw the potential of harnessing the water power of Cypress Creek for mills. He built a saw mill and a grist mill on Cypress Creek, making the newly named town of Winters’ Mill the social—if not the commercial center—for miles around. With the coming of the Civil War in 1861, many of the male residents of the little community at the junction of Cypress Creek and the Blanco River answered the call and enlisted in the service of the Confederacy. Those who remained at home contributed by making charcoal on the banks of the Blanco and by hauling tons of bat guano (used in the manufacture of gunpowder) from local caves and packing it, along with charcoal, on mules to Confederate contractors in San Marcos and Austin.

Besides its mills, the industry of the Wimberley Valley has over the years included cotton, goats, sheep and cattle. With the rise of the livestock industry, cedar became the scourge of the valley and gave rise to a new industry—cedar chopping. In the period during and immediately after World War II, Texans began discovering Wimberley as the perfect spot for summer homes or weekend “camps.” They built camp houses of native stone and cedar with large screened porches to take advantage of the cool breezes coming off of the creeks and the river. As Wimberley turned 100 years old, tourism became the primary industry of the area. For the past half century, Wimberley has continued to welcome visitors who find the cool waters and green cypress shade as alluring as did native Americans who once occupied the banks of Cypress Creek and the Blanco. d

isitors come to our beautiful valley to enjoy the cool shaded quietness of our cypress-lined streams or the splendor of our Hill Country vistas or just the relaxed, laid-back atmosphere of our slower pace. After arriving, however, they find that there is so much more to Wimberley beyond the charming friendliness they encounter. There are year-round activities for the whole family.

This exciting, professional presentation attracts young actors from around the country to perform in two of the Bard’s plays. Audiences enjoy these and other EmilyAnn Theatre presentations in a natural setting under the stars. EmilyAnn is also the location for the annual Butterfly Day Festival in April as well as the annual Christmas Trail of Lights with more than 100 separate sparkling displays of holiday spirit. The Wimberley Players perform dramas, musicals and comedies throughout the year at the Wimberley Playhouse at 450 Old Kyle Rd. near the Square. The Rep Theatre at 515 Ranch Road 2325 presents new works by local playwrights as well as exciting proven works. During summer months, visitors enjoy first-run movies under the stars at the Corral Theater, near the intersection of Ranch Road 3237 and Flite Acres Road. Movies at this unique outdoor theater start at dusk on weekends from May through Labor Day. July 4th’s activities include the down-home charm of the Wimberley Parade winding through the Wimberley downtown area and a celebration that the whole family will love, the July Jubilee.

A good place to start your visit is at the Visitor Center, located at 14100 Ranch Road 12, just across Cypress Creek from the Wimberley Square. The friendly, helpful volunteers will assist you in planning activities for your stay. Wimberley has long been recognized as the home of a great arts community and over the years that reputation has grown even greater in stature and availability of both the visual and performing arts! Home to numerous visual arts galleries, a nationally recognized blown glass icon, multiple performing arts venues and more for the discerning visitor, Wimberley is truly “art worthy”. Visitors are not only treated to the best of local and area-wide artists but likewise to prominent artists from around the State and the country. There are two collaborative art galleries displaying emerging artists’ works. Lured by the artistic spirit that thrives in Wimberley, many artists, writers and musicians have called this area home for years and their numbers continue to grow. Wimberley has three outstanding venues for critically acclaimed live theater. EmilyAnn Theatre & Gardens — west of Wimberley on Ranch Road 2325 — each year hosts Shakespeare Under the Stars.

The annual Wimberley VFW rodeo is one of the largest in the state and is held on the weekend closest to July 4th. Three nights of CPRA sanctioned bull riding, bronco busting, calf roping and all of the other events that make rodeos great are on tap with fun for the whole family at the rodeo grounds at Veteran’s Park on Jacobs Well Road.

Wimberley is in the heart of the Central Texas wine region. Visit wine shops in town and many wineries in the area to sample a variety of locally produced wine as well as imported varietals. If your tastes extend beyond wine, visit one of our local breweries, or even a rum distillery. Cool off at Wimberley Shave Ice, which serves hundreds of flavors of its legendary shave ice or at The Wooden Spoon with delicious frozen yogurt.

Every Friday night is bingo night at the VFW Hall on Jacobs Well Road. Food and beverages are available, and cash prizes make for an evening of entertainment for the entire family. If golf is your game, head out to Quick Sand Golf Course in Woodcreek. This beautiful, tree-lined, 18-hole course draws golfers from all over the state. If live music is your thing, many local dining establishments provide musical entertainment year round. The Starlight Symphony Orchestra, The Mid-Texas Symphony, The Hill Country Jazz Band, The Hill Country Community Band and the Wimberley Community Chorus also perform concerts throughout the year at various venues in and around Wimberley.

For those who like outdoor fun, two magnificent natural swimming holes, the Blue Hole in Wimberley and Cypress Falls in Woodcreek, welcome swimmers with cool clear waters. Cypress Creek Nature Trail offers shaded hiking in a natural setting along Cypress Creek. A hike to the top of Prayer Mountain, formerly named Old Baldy, will provide a unique panorama of the Wimberley Valley and surrounding hills. For those who are more serious about walking and bicycling, Blue Hole Regional Park offers a wonderful hike and bike trail. Most known for its natural swimming area, the park also offers basketball and volleyball courts, a playground, a community pavilion, an amphitheatre, picnic areas, a scenic overlook and two full-size soccer fields. Six lighted tennis courts are in the planning stages. EmilyAnn Theatre and Gardens offers walking trails through a beautiful garden and at the top of the hill is the Veterans Memorial providing a beautiful view of the valley. The student population of the district is more than 2,050 in prekindergarten through 12th grade at four modern campuses. Wimberley High School, for grades nine through 12, creates an academic environment filled with yearly successes for both the students and the community. MARKET DAY No mention of shopping would be complete without listing Wimberley’s renowned Lions Market Day, long a popular Wimberley destination. Lions Market Day takes place on the first Saturday of each month, March through December, at Lions Field on Ranch Road 2325, about a half mile from the Square. Lions Market Day has been an institution in Wimberley since 1964, when the first market was held on the Town Square. Local vendors set up for business on the tailgates of their trucks. They brought and sold everything — including pigs, rugs and homemade tamales. The second-largest such gathering in Texas, Wimberley Market Day now boasts more than 495 diverse vendors’ booths offering antiques, collectibles, woodcrafts, custom clothing, jewelry, art, flowers and plants, handicrafts and foods. Six concession stands serve breakfast items, barbecue plates, sandwiches, smoked turkey legs, snacks and a variety of beverages including beer and wine. Proceeds from Lions Market Day enable the Wimberley Lions Club to donate to many local non-profit organizations and Lions International charitable groups.

DINING Dining choices in Wimberley are far greater than most other communities its size. If you’re hungry, you’ll find something for every taste at our restaurants, cafés and eateries. Wimberley Medical Clinic

n a 1969 edition of a Wimberley Chamber of Commerce monthly newspaper, there was a classified advertisement inviting a doctor, any doctor, to come to Wimberley and set up practice. The ad even offered office, laboratory and pharmacy space. Today there are more than 13 physicians in 10 private practices in Wimberley. Specialties range from pediatrics and ophthalmology to internal and family medicine. Several dentists offer excellent dental care and Wimberley boasts acupuncture services, as well as several chiropractors, providing non-surgical treatment and rehabilitation for chronic and acute pain. Registered pharmacists take care of prescription needs at Brookshire Brothers supermarket and the Wimberley Pharmacy. The Crescent View Medical Clinic provides medical care and minor emergency care to the community. Central Texas Medical Center (CTMC) in San Marcos which originated in 1923 as Hays County Soldiers, Sailors and Marines Memorial Hospital, was restructured in 1960. The present facility was opened at its current Wonder World Drive location in 1983. The CTMC staff of more than 700 employees works with more than 220 active and consulting physicians to provide quality services to patients and their families. In addition, over 200 community members and interns from area educational institutions

volunteer their services to the hospital. In 2010 and again in 2011, CTMC was named The Best Hospital in Hays County. In addition, CTMC added a certified Chest Pain Center to its ER capabilities in 2011. In 2012, CTMC became the first operating room along the IH-35 corridor between Austin and San Antonio to be equipped with a da Vinci robotic-assisted surgery suite. CTMC is a member of the Adventist Health System (AHS), a not-for-profit healthcare organization that emphasizes Christ at the center of care. Founded in 1973, AHS has quickly grown to become the largest not-for-profit Protestant healthcare provider in the nation. Today, AHS supports 44 hospitals and employs 77,000 individuals. AHS hospitals are comprised of 7,700 licensed beds, providing care for 4 million patients each year in inpatient, outpatient and emergency room visits. Seton Medical Center Hays opened in October 2009 and was built as a centralized resource for complex medical care, serving the residents of Hays, Caldwell and South Travis counties. Located just east of I-35, off Kyle Parkway, this innovative medical campus offers a full range of diagnostic, surgical, cancer, cardiac, emergency and maternity health services. The facility includes 112 licensed beds, an outpatient surgery center, medical office building and adjacent retail development. Seton has worked hard to earn its reputation for providing high-quality healthcare in a patient-centered environment that is second-to-none.

Deer Creek of Wimberley Rehabilitation Center SUCCESS STORY... Born in Chicago, 72-year-old James Gore moved all over the country with his family. He also served in the Air Force from 1960-64, stationed in San Antonio, Texas, Great Falls, Montana, and Grand Forks, North Dakota before moving to Austin, Texas with his parents. Later, James and his father took jobs at the Kyle Eagle Newspaper, which relocated them to Wimberley. Mr. Gore reports, “of all the places I’ve been, I love Central Texas the best for it’s great weather.” James has remained in Wimberley for 27 years, spending the past 25 years working for the Wimberley View paper. He began at the Wimberley View working on Ad layouts and then moved to Circulation Manager. James says the things he loved the most about his job were the camaraderie and the opportunity to meet new people. That is also what led him to volunteer as a driver for the Wimberley EMS. Unfortunately, in 2012, James was diagnosed with cancer and had to leave work. He underwent surgery at the VA in San Antonio in August of that year. While staying with a friend, he suffered complications from surgery that landed him back in the hospital. After a second surgery, Mr. Gore came to Deer Creek in early September of 2012. While here, he made substantial functional gains, improving his strength and endurance. However, James suffered unexpected surgical complications and once again returned to the hospital. With a third surgery under his belt, Mr. Gore returned to Deer Creek in February of 2013 with a new look on life. No longer in pain from his multiple surgeries, James excelled with therapy. Once again improving his strength, endurance, walking, and regaining his sense of humor. After 7 months in and out of the hospital, and long hours of rehabilitation, he is finally preparing to return to his home in Wimberley. Mr. Gore says that now his only problem is figuring out what to do with all of his free time, stating, “maybe I can volunteer here at Deer Creek!”
