Chairman’s Welcome
F
or over half a century, the Woodbridge Metro Chamber of Commerce has served as the township’s spearhead for bringing ready, willing and able buyers and sellers together. Our Membership Directory serves as a valuable resource as you consider merchants and business professionals, and the goods and services they provide. Woodbridge Township is more than just Woodbridge proper. While Main Street is the heart of Woodbridge, the township also embraces the sections known as Colonia, Iselin, Fords, Avenel, Hopelawn, Keasby, Menlo Park Terrace, Sewaren and Port Reading. These communities have wonderful businesses and equally wonderful residents and visitors. It is the goal of the WMCC to bring these people together. Doing business is about building relationships. At the Chamber, we are deeply committed to building and growing the types of relationships that really generate commercial activity and social interaction. Woodbridge Township Mayor John McCormac likes to say, “Woodbridge is the best town around!” He’s right; it is. Woodbridge has something for everyone. We have fine and casual dining. We have small and mid-size boutique businesses as well as large shopping
malls. We have beautiful residential communities, parks, entertainment and fitness centers throughout our township. Coming soon to Avenel will be the Avenel Arts Village. This will be an exciting new addition to our community. Few communities rival our attorneys, realtors, accountants, bankers and financial professionals. We are the leaders in environmental sustainability. We are known as the “Crossroads Chamber” and with good reason. There is no busier corridor in the state than the one where the Parkway, the Turnpike and Routes 1, 9, 27 and 35 all meet. At the Woodbridge Metro Chamber of Commerce, our vision is to bring together our “buyers & sellers” through common relationships. Share in our vision – invest in your success. WELCOME TO WOODBRIDGE TOWNSHIP: THE CROSSROADS OF NEW JERSEY

oodbridge Township has welcomed residents and business since 1669 when the township was chartered as the first incorporated municipality in the Province of East Jersey. Today, Woodbridge Township is composed of 10 towns located over 26 square miles, yet has the feel of small-town America. Woodbridge offers quiet, tree-lined neighborhoods, local schools within a short walk and a responsive government focused on the needs of those who choose to live, work, educate their children and recreate in our community. As Mayor of Woodbridge Township, I am continually seeking opportunities and innovative initiatives whereby Woodbridge corporate headquarters and offices, industry and business, retail and shopping centers and residents and visitors can together contribute to the betterment of our community in support of the unparalleled first-class business environment that thrives throughout our community.
invest in Woodbridge – bringing several thousand jobs to our citizens with the added benefit of tax-free financing to expand and renovate school district and community infrastructure.
Over the past several years, we have successfully engaged economic development that has been the engine that has allowed us to drive a historic $26 million investment in our schools. As a result of these investments, the township will generate nearly $8 million annually from the development projects – projects that were provided tax incentives by the township to encourage investment in Woodbridge. By offering tax incentives, we ensured that these companies would

History
W
oodbridge’s rich heritage began with the arrival of its first settlers in 1664. Traveling from Massachusetts, the pioneers put down roots on land acquired from the Lenni Lenape Indians. It is thought that the settlement chose the name of Woodbridge, honoring Newbury, Massachusetts, Reverend John Woodbridge. In 1666, the Governor of New Jersey accorded the newly formed village permission to allocate land parcels, appoint a pastor and submit militia officers, followed shortly by the granting of a charter to the township by King Charles of England in 1669 – making Woodbridge the oldest original township in New Jersey. In the next several decades, the town of Woodbridge grew, with the establishment of the state’s first permanent printing house by James Parker in 1751, resulting in the first published magazine, The New American Magazine, in 1758. As additional municipalities, including Carteret, Rahway, Edison and Metuchen, were formed in the 1800s, Woodbridge Township lost land, though the community remained one of the largest in the state. However, Woodbridge benefited from its access to the natural resource of fine clay deposits, placing it as one of the world’s largest producers of fire bricks. Over the next 100 years, the township opened School #1 and its first public library, what is now known as the Barron Arts Center (1877) and a high school (1911). The township also built the first U.S. cloverleaf at the intersection of U.S. Route 1 and State Route 35 (1929) and received esteemed awards recognizing its advanced growth and contemporary governance in the mid 1960s. Among other achievements, the Woodbridge Metro Chamber of Commerce was formed in 1964, the extensive indoor shopping mall Woodbridge Center was established in 1971 and in the same year, the modern $2.6 million Woodbridge Metro Park train station was opened. In 1999, the community collectively built a community playground in Merrill Park.

A new town hall was built in 1996 and the Woodbridge Community Center was built in 2002. The Barron Arts Center and the Trinity Episcopal Church have been placed on the State and National Historic Registers. In 2010 and 2011, the New Jersey League of Municipalities named Woodbridge the “New Jersey Sustainability Champion.” In 2017, the Avenel Arts Village opened its doors. This project will bring top plays and entertainment to our community. Woodbridge has experienced a number of significant benchmarks since its original settlers came to the area in the late 1600s, and continues to progress into a future just as bright as its vibrant past. Woodbridge still has many businesses serving the community for decades. Vito Mazza Salon and Spa celebrated 50 years in 2017. Vaticano and Son Shoe repair has been on Main Street for over 50 years. The downtown is steeped in history. w

oodbridge Township is truly a special place – a large municipality with close-knit neighborhoods that embrace their individual identities.
Woodbridge Township is the fifth largest municipality in New Jersey, supporting the fifth largest suburban school system. Named an “All-American City” by the National Civic League, Woodbridge has been named New Jersey’s most sustainable municipality by the New Jersey League of Municipalities.
The plethora of transportation options literally brings business and business travelers to Woodbridge’s front door. Woodbridge’s transportation hub includes

easy access to the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway, Interstate 287, U.S. Highways 1, 9, 35 and 27, and Route 440, providing a direct link to New York City via Staten Island. Rail commuters find both Amtrak and New Jersey Transit passage via
the Metro Park Station in Iselin and from the downtown Woodbridge and Avenel train stations. Nearby Newark Liberty International Airport speeds business air access to nationwide and international destinations. ›

With its ideal location in northern Middlesex County – considered the Crossroads of New Jersey – Woodbridge encompasses 26 square miles and is strategically located between the major cities of New York and Philadelphia. The community’s 100,000-plus residents have easy access by land and rail to employment, shopping, dining and recreational opportunities throughout the region.

The Woodbridge community and surrounding region boasts 350 years of history. When it comes to commerce, Woodbridge’s business and industrial endeavors have deep roots as well as a keen eye to the future. While early economic prosperity focused on agricultural interests and brick manufacturing, today’s business magnates are more divergent. Woodbridge is home to top industries in health care, professional services, retail trade, international distribution and warehousing and more.
www.woodbridgechamber.com
12 The ever-prospering economic landscape includes employers such as Siemens, Amazon Fulfillment Center, FedEx, CPV-Woodbridge Energy Center, Wakefern, Preferred Freezer, Prudential, Verizon and many other international corporations and businesses who are drawn to the community’s strategic location among major markets, transportation routes and the availability of unsurpassed commerce support.
development is set to change the face of the downtown business district, thanks to a Downtown Woodbridge Vision Plan spurring redevelopment along Main Street and the surrounding residential area. Located at the foot of Main Street, a new Transit Village area will include one and two-bedroom apartments, shopping and retail establishments key to attracting the millennial workforce. The Parker Press area already boasts a popular farmers market, art exhibitions, cultural events and numerous concerts. Powering the 21st century community is construction of the new $600 million, 540 megawatt combined-cycle Sewaren7 power plant in the Sewaren section of Woodbridge Township that is on the fast track to completion. Sewaren 7 is targeted to be operational in 2018 and to generate more than 350 jobs during the two-year construction phase. PSE&G has spent $125 million over the last three years hardening and upgrading its Sewaren Switching Station, which was devastated by Superstorm Sandy. These improvements, part of PSE&G’s Energy Strong program, included raising
electric distribution equipment above new FEMA flood guidelines, as well as installing new, elevated transmission facilities needed to maintain electric system reliability.›

Innovation. Culture. Collaboration. Opportunity. Middlesex County is the intersection where a deep history meets leading-edge innovation, where outstanding arts programs meet a vibrant and expansive culture, where a wonderfully diverse population meets meaningful and impactful collaboration, and where award-winning education meets world-class opportunity. The Woodbridge Community Center, recognized as the best facility of its kind in the state, continues to add new recreational and wellness amenities.
Focus on Economic Development
Why Woodbridge? Convenient public transportation access, skilled workforce and training facilities, a booming economic development commitment, new housing, updated and expanded recreational facilities and more make Woodbridge Township a natural choice for business and industry. During the past four years, the township has partnered with the school district to fund more than $26 million in new community recreational facilities on school grounds that include new multi-use turf football, soccer, softball and baseball fields, new running tracks, tennis courts and gymnasium/ auditorium improvements at local high schools and middle schools. The theater at Woodbridge Middle School was renovated, and new playgrounds and recreational facilities installed at every elementary school. The Cypress Recreational Center in the Port Reading section of the township adds to the amazing array of recreational opportunities and will be a permanent home for cheerleading and wrestling. Plans include the addition of four tennis courts; two sand volleyball courts; two hard surface volleyball courts; four pickle ball courts; a level playing field for soccer and baseball for special needs children including those in wheelchairs; a new basketball court; improved soccer fields; a new youth soccer field; and a spray park.

Having K9 Kilmer by my side has been lifechanging and I as well with my family cannot thank Rebuilding Warriors enough. —John Durrenberger
The Relay For Life of Woodbridge Township was the very first Relay for Life in the State of NJ and has proudly raised funds to fight cancer for over 23 years. The funds raised go to cancer research, providing rides to patient’s Dr. appointments, wigs, free hotel stays near treatment centers for patients and their families and a 24/7 hotline. Through these efforts we are happy to say the number of people surviving cancer is on the rise. We won’t stop our efforts until we have found a cure for cancer. Please join us in the fight.

Community Living WHY LIVE IN WOODBRIDGE?
W
ith its first settlers calling the area home all the way back in 1664, Woodbridge has been an excellent place to live for 350 years. Ten communities make up the township that is Woodbridge – Avenel, Colonia, Fords, Menlo Park, Port Reading, Sewaran, Hopelawn, Iselin, Keasbey and Woodbridge Proper. Each community maintains its own distinct character while still fitting together to create a unified Woodbridge Township. Life in Woodbridge is the perfect combination of small town and big city. Peaceful, suburban neighborhoods are ideal for raising a family or relaxing in retirement, and the plentiful businesses and excellent highway system make it easy to both work and play close to home.

A
message from Robert Zega, Woodbridge Township Public Schools Superintendent.
Woodbridge Township knows that a top-quality education system is invaluable for its younger residents, so a top-quality education system it provides. Woodbridge Township Public Schools include 16 elementary schools, five middle schools and three high schools, plus there are private school options at each level as well. The 2017-2018 school year will bring some major changes. First and foremost is our 1:1 eighth grade iPad initiative. The planning for this initiative began years ago when we approved significant upgrades in our technology infrastructure, including our
NJWOOCW18 design.indd 22
own fiber network and access points for every classroom. Then we purchased over 1,000 iPads for exclusive use for our eighthgrade students in our five middle schools. In addition to the iPads, we also provide webbased curriculum for math and science in eighth grade. We are proud to take our first steps into the realm of digital curriculum. Another big change for us will be districtwide, full-day kindergarten. Although our community has been advocating for full-day kindergarten for several years, lack of space and financial constraints have been preventing us from expanding from half-day to full-day. After some careful budgeting, the acquisition of a renovated St. Cecelia’s school and the influx of over $5 million in state aid, we are now able to complete this
expansion. Full-day kindergarten will begin in September 2018. We are very proud of our continued dual enrollment programs. Our school district has cooperative agreements with several colleges and universities for students to take college courses in high schools. Current high school students can earn college credits from Syracuse, NJIT, Kean, Rider, Middlesex CC and Berkeley. We are one of the few New Jersey school districts to offer such a variety of dual enrollment courses. We are proud of our continued success in Advanced Placement (AP) courses. Over the last five years, we have increased the number of students who take AP courses and also the number of students who score high enough

on the AP exams to be eligible for college credits. 25 AP courses were offered in the three high schools during the 2016-17 school year. In May 2017, 1,358 AP tests were taken by 730 students. Finally our construction projects are now in full swing. The residents of Woodbridge Township recently approved over $50 million in renovations to three school
buildings (Ross Street Elementary School, Woodbridge Middle School and Oak Tree Road Elementary School). Oak Tree Road School will open in September 2018. We expect to break ground on our Ross Street. and Woodbridge Middle projects in spring 2018. We anticipate two calendar years of construction, and both projects being completed and ready for use in September 2020.
