Chamber Welcome elcome to Worthington … where making plans and making connections are proud traditions.
W
The Worthington Area Chamber of Commerce has been “making connections for business” for more than 50 years, working to support a vibrant local economy and business community, while collaborating and convening conversations with others to plan for the future. Residents and visitors connect regularly on our Village Green for festivals and entertainment, ceremonies and community events. They’ve been gathering there since 1803, when a group of families from Connecticut and Massachusetts sketched a plan for an ideal community before heading west to settle it. In the heart of town, they placed what they valued most – schools, libraries, churches and green spaces that remain priorities in our community today. Throughout this community guide, you’ll find information about the highly ranked schools and libraries, destination shops and restaurants, arts and cultural activities, neighborhoods, parks and a strong local business community that have developed from our pioneers’ plans. We encourage you to do some planning of your own as you are making purchasing decisions for your business or your home and family. The Buyers’ Guide in this publication catalogs Chambermember businesses whose goods and services will meet a variety of

Welcome to Worthington … W
orthington is in the heart of one of the Midwest’s fastest-growing areas. Known for its historic charm and sense of community, our community is next-door neighbors with The Ohio State University, internationally acclaimed health care facilities and world-class research centers.
Worthington reflects its New England heritage with historic brick sidewalks that lead to the Village Green, where many of Worthington’s original commercial buildings and churches still stand proudly. Today, as in ages past, people come to meet and greet on the Green and to stroll the streets of downtown Worthington.
Worthington is proud of its awardwinning schools and libraries; safe neighborhoods; varied commercial districts; diverse arts; homes of every style, size and price; and, most importantly, friendly residents who share a love of community, family and friends.
Amidst this historic charm beats the heart of a thoroughly modern city, a planned community with a uniquely woven blend of new and nostalgic, of community and commerce, of unity and diversity, of convenience and comfort.
In 1803, a group of families from the Farmington River Valley of Connecticut and Massachusetts, led by James Kilbourne, platted a New England village of 164 lots around a central public square which today hosts concerts and arts festivals. The settlers’ respect and priority for strong schools, libraries, churches and the quality of community life also live on today as Worthington traditions.
Worthington is a vibrant, diverse and affluent community. We boast a welleducated citizenry; 79 percent of the residents have an advanced education – 49 percent with a four-year degree or higher, and 30 percent with an associate’s degree or one to two years of college courses. About half of Worthington residents hold managerial or professional jobs with another 37 percent in technical, sales or administrative positions.

But, statistics can’t measure our quality of life, the sense of community, the pride in our city and the satisfaction of our residents and business owners. These are among the most important assets enjoyed by those who call Worthington home. The city’s exemplary programs include outstanding recreational opportunities. At the Worthington Community Center, our parklands and public areas, fitness is part of family fun. Residents and tourists alike enjoy Worthington’s unique shopping options, including historic downtown Worthington and The Shops at Worthington Place, an upscale mall, as well as the Farmers Market on Saturday mornings. Visitors enjoy a broad spectrum of attractions, historic areas, hotels and conference centers, dining and shopping options and recreational/entertainment venues, including a variety of local festivals and annual events. Here, where old-town charm is a backdrop to a major metropolitan area, residents enjoy easy access to major highways and public transportation sources — then return home to the safety and comfort of neighborhoods on well-maintained streets and public areas. Businesses also choose to settle and grow in Worthington, appreciating its tradition of success and its opportunities for the future. More than 1,200 small, regional, national and international companies are located in our community. CEOs, business owners and site selectors appreciate Worthington’s strategic location, market access, availability of skilled workers and a business-supportive community and government.
he City of Worthington has operated under a councilmanager form of government since its charter in 1956. A city manager, appointed by a seven-member city council, serves as the chief administrative official of the city. The city manager implements city council policy decisions, appoints city employees and is responsible for the preparation and administration of the city’s operating and capital budgets. Matt Greeson has served as Worthington’s city manager since 2007. Robyn Stewart serves as assistant city manager.
T
Council members are elected by the populace for four-year terms on an at-large, nonpartisan basis. City Council members elected in November take office the following January. The council selects a president, who presides over council meetings, and a president pro-tem, who assumes the duties of the president in his/her absence. These positions are elected for two-year terms. Members of City Council include Louis J.R. Goorey, M.D., president; Bonnie Michael, president pro-tem; Robert Chosy, M.D.; Joe Davis; Rachael Dorothy; Scott Myers; and Doug Smith. A familiar face at many Chamber-member ribbon cuttings and community events is that of Mayor Harvey Minton. The mayor is appointed by Worthington City Council for a two-year term and has, as his primary responsibility, the administration of Mayor’s Court. The mayor presides over many civic functions as the ceremonial head of the community. Mayor Minton, an attorney with offices in Worthington, has been a resident of Worthington since 1986.

Worthington Means Business F
rom the brick-lined sidewalks of its historic downtown to the bustling redevelopment underway near a major highway interchange, the Worthington area means business. Its primary business corridors include the following:
the west. This corridor, which stretches from immediately north of I-270 (Lakeview Plaza) south to SR 161, is comprised of businesses across a wide range of commercial sectors, including manufacturing, service, construction, transportation and utilities.
Downtown Business District Worthington’s historic village center – and the heart of the community – can be found along High Street (US 23) near the intersection of SR 161. This beautiful setting, known by many longtime residents as “Old Worthington,” contains a vibrant mix of distinctive retail and restaurant tenants, as well as a number of small office-oriented businesses. The location is enhanced by pedestrian-friendly sidewalks, an attractive streetscape and buildings with rear-located parking. It is anchored by the four quadrants of the Village Green, Worthington’s nod to its New England pioneer roots, which hosts numerous community events and activities.
North High Street North of Worthington’s historic center is an area characterized by broad, green front yards, mature trees and increased setbacks. This corridor contains an array of businesses including corporate offices, retirement homes, and retail services, including banks and restaurants.
Huntley Road Area Worthington’s industrial corridor follows Huntley Road, a north-south arterial that includes dual main-line rail (CSX and Norfolk Southern railroads) and Proprietors Road on
Wilson Bridge Road Wilson Bridge Road is Worthington’s primary commercial office corridor. This area of the city is comprised of large office facilities (both single-tenant and multi-tenant) and is home to businesses in wholesale trade and transportation, communications, utilities, financial services, insurance and real estate sectors. Following an extensive city-sponsored corridor study, this area is experiencing a major renovation and redevelopment which will attract new businesses to cater to residents and office users. These discs are used for abrasive work on diamonds.

The corridor is anchored by the retail and mixed-use property at The Shops at Worthington Place. Newly renovated, The Shops at Worthington Place is a destination for casual dining, specialty shops and brandname national retailers in an intimate, neighborhood setting. A guide to current tenants is available at http://shopworthingtonplace.com/stores-restaurants/. Location & Transportation orthington’s strategic location is one of the prime reasons why it makes an ideal home for businesses. Located in the heart of Ohio, Worthington affords easy access to more than half of the U.S. population and half of Canada’s consumers.
W
As part of the greater Columbus metropolitan area, Worthington is located in one of the Midwest’s fastest-growing major metro areas, with more than 1.7 million residents. It lies just north of downtown Columbus and is nearly six square miles in size. Worthington is centrally located at the transportation crossroads of Ohio, connecting businesses to cities throughout Ohio and surrounding states. Nearly 100,000 cars travel through Worthington each day. There are 81 million consumers within 400 miles of Worthington, and 172 million consumers are within 800 miles. Worthington’s outstanding transportation connections include immediate access to three controlled-access freeways (I-71, I-270, SR315); ready access to an international airport, cargo-dedicated airport and general aviation facilities; and rail service from two national carriers and one regional rail carrier. The Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA) maintains four public transportation bus routes, including three express options and one local route. Connect by air. Worthington is served by three airports: iPort Columbus International Airport, located just 15 minutes away, serves the Columbus region with dozens of major airlines, providing more than 150 daily arrivals and departures to nonstop destinations throughout North America and more than 110 international connections. iRickenbacker International Airport, located approximately 30 miles from Worthington, is one of the world’s few cargo-dedicated airports and one of North America’s busiest cargo airports. The airport is a part of the Rickenbacker Inland Port, a global multimodal logistics hub that operates a foreign trade zone. iLocated within five miles of Worthington, The Ohio State University Airport at Don Scott Field is one of the country’s leading charter services and general aviation facilities, providing aircraft services to many central Ohio pilots and businesses. It serves as a general aviation reliever for Port Columbus International Airport and consistently ranks in the top five airports in Ohio for the number of take-offs and landings. Connect by rail. Rail service connects Worthington businesses to sources of raw materials and outlets to customers nationwide. iThe Columbus region is served by two national mainline rail carriers, CSX and Norfolk Southern, and one regional carrier, Ohio Central.
Connect through a faster, safer highway interchange, coming soon. The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) has begun a $91.5 million reconstruction project on Worthington’s major highway interchange. Worthington residents and business owners can track progress at www.270-23.org. The “North Side Fix” project, with a construction phase lasting from July 2013 through October 2015, will result in safer and more efficient highway transportation with these outcomes: iEliminate weave areas on US-23 and on I-270 at the US-23 loop ramps. iConstruct two northbound express lanes on US-23 which carry traffic away from I-270, while avoiding signalized intersections at Campus View Boulevard and Flint Road. iConstruct an additional lane in each direction on US-23 from Flint Road to Lazelle Road. iProvide for pedestrian traffic from Wilson Bridge Road to Lazelle Road. iCoordinate signals, camera and dynamic message signs with ODOT and City of Columbus traffic systems. Connect the “green” way. For exercise, enjoyment and a way to protect the planet while making a quick trip across town, many Worthington residents enjoy biking. Groups of artistic red and purple bike racks were installed in May 2012 to encourage biking to downtown Worthington businesses. The racks resemble bicycle wheels, to which bicycles can be hooked. A steel support across the top of the rack resembles bicycle handlebars. The bike racks were the brainchild of Sustainable Worthington, a grass roots organization that promotes environmental programs and provides a map of bike rack locations at www.sustainableworthington.org/biking.
iFour intermodal yards are located in the region. The Rickenbacker Inland Port, located approximately 30 miles from Worthington, is served directly from the Port of Virginia (Norfolk International Terminals) via the new Heartland Corridor, which allows doublestacked freight trains to travel directly from Virginia to Rickenbacker. Connect via major highways. Worthington’s presence at the crossroads of prime interstate and controlled access freeways connects it regionally and nationally. iWorthington’s outstanding transportation network contains major interchanges for north-south I-71, the I-270 outerbelt, and controlled access freeway SR-315, which provide a variety of options for quickly traveling in and out of the city. iThe region is located at the crossroads of I-70 and I-71, within a oneday drive of 51 percent of the U.S. population.

Two gymnasiums make it possible to offer a variety of programs for all ages, including volleyball, basketball and softball leagues. The aquatics facility boasts two indoor pools, including a leisure pool with a giant slide, children’s slide and lazy river, and a fitness pool for lap swimming. Both children and adults can learn new creative skills in a variety of art classes, including ceramics, scrapbooking, stained glass and jewelry-making. The Community Center is open Monday through Friday from 5:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.; Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Family Nights on Fridays provide an opportunity to enjoy all the building has to offer at no cost. Other offerings are priced à la carte. Worthington residents and employees of Worthington-based businesses are eligible for a membership discount. Annual, monthly and daily membership options are available, and there are special rates for youth, senior citizens and corporations. For more information, visit: www.worthington.org or call (614) 436-2743. Parks and pathways also offer outdoor recreational opportunities to enjoy athletics, passive recreation, natural vegetation and wildlife. The city
maintains more than 221 acres of developed and natural public areas. Neighborhood parks and playgrounds have been conveniently placed throughout the community. A recreational pathway along the Olentangy River was completed in 1977. The Class 1 bike path features grassy open spaces, two neighborhood play areas and neighborhood sports fields. In 1981, tennis courts were added, and in 2006, the path was extended an additional mile to where it now ends at Worthington Hills. Dogs and their owners can sit and stay at one of the area’s newest amenities, the Godown Road Dog Park at 6099 Godown Road, just west of Linworth Road. The award-winning park features a combination of rolling terrain, mature trees, and landscaping with grass, mulch and boulders. The specially designed area, open 365 days a year from dawn to dusk, includes separate fenced areas for small dogs and large dogs. Both areas are shaded and include benches, water fountains for both dogs and people, paved parking and an information kiosk. The park was created through a partnership of the cities of Worthington and Columbus and the fundraising and coordinating support of a citizens group, Worthington Organized Off-leash Friends (WOOF).
Lifelong Learning culture of lifelong learning, and exemplary schools and libraries to foster it, are points of pride for Worthington residents and businesses. Worthington’s founding fathers believed a strong public education system was critical to the long-term success of our community, and their high standards are carried on today by the Worthington School District. The district has been recognized by the state, the regional community and many independent third parties as one of the strongest and highest performing school districts in the area.
A
The average scores of Worthington students on standardized achievement tests of basic skills are consistently between the 70th and 80th percentiles nationally. Results on state proficiency tests are generally among the top 10 percent in the state. College entrance scores are well above state and national averages, and recent results are among the highest in many years. Nearly 90 percent of district students continue their education after high school. At least three-fourths attend a four-year college or university. Sports, the arts and community service complement our students’ academic talents. The high schools’ academic and athletic teams, as well as vocal, instrumental music and theater groups, consistently are among

the best in the region and state. And, students in service-learning projects perform more than 55,000 hours of community service per year. Both the student and community populations in Worthington are diverse and well-educated. There are 32 native languages spoken in homes, and 79 percent of residents have an advanced education; 49 percent with a four-year degree or higher, and 30 percent with an associate’s degree or one to two years of college courses. Complementing the school curriculum and supporting lifelong learning is the award-winning Worthington Libraries system. Founded in 1803 as a subscription library serving 100 people on the Ohio frontier, Worthington Libraries has grown to become a nationally recognized library system and one of the busiest libraries in the state. In 2007, Worthington Libraries received the national Library of the Year award. Worthington Libraries provides service to nearly 60,000 residents in the Worthington School District through three state-of-the-art facilities: Old Worthington Library, Northwest Library (jointly operated by Worthington Libraries and the Columbus Metropolitan Library) and Worthington Park Library. The library’s website, www.worthingtonlibraries.org, serves as its digital location and link to
many premium research resources. Library staff plans more than 1,000 programs and outreach events each year — for everyone from babies to seniors, to teens and business people. The Libraries are frequent partners with Worthington Schools, the City and the Chamber in the presentation of programs and the development and promotion of library services. Other Educational Resources Two notable private schools also serve Worthington families. St. Michael School, a private parochial school established in 1954, has grown to more than 500 students in grades K through 8. The faculty is comprised of 19 homeroom teachers, classroom aides in grades K-3, and specialists in Spanish, library, technology, physical education, music, art and band. The school achieved national recognition in 1988, receiving the U.S. Department of Education’s “Exemplary School Award.” Founded in 1973, Worthington Christian Schools offer a rigorous K12 academic program which ranges from enrichment/intervention programs at the elementary level, to Advanced Placement classes and
internship opportunities at the high school level. In 2011, WCS scored in the top tier of all schools in the Columbus area in Ohio Graduation Test results. The kindergarten and middle school are located at 8225 Worthington-Galena Road in the Early Childhood Center at Grace Polaris church, and grades 1-5 are at 50 Westview Ave., Columbus. Administrative offices and Worthington Christian High School (Grades 9-12) are located at 6670 Worthington-Galena Road, Worthington. Numerous choices in higher education are available to Worthington residents and businesses. The Ohio State University campus is nine miles from downtown Worthington, and many of Ohio’s fine liberal arts colleges are within a two hours’ drive. Worthington Chamber members enjoy the support of several respected MBA programs and business-focused curricular opportunities, including DeVry University and Keller Graduate School of Management — Columbus North Campus, Ashland University Columbus Center, and the Otterbein University MBA Program.

To Your Health ealthy bodies, minds and spirits are important to Worthington residents and employers. A coalition of supportive, health-minded citizens organized and oversees the Healthy Worthington Resource Center & Food Pantry, a volunteer organization dedicated to health and wellness throughout the community. The organization distributes food and personal items to individuals or families in need within the Worthington area and provides resources and referrals to additional sources of assistance for employment, self-sufficiency and basic needs. The group promotes healthy living through proper nutrition and exercise throughout the Worthington area.

The City of Worthington recognizes the value of good health and fitness and has responded to the needs and expectations of the community through programs and amenities offered through the Worthington Community Center. The family-oriented, state-of-the-art facility features an aquatic complex, fitness center and many more amenities for family fun and fitness. The center includes two pools (a leisure pool for family fun and a lap pool for exercise and swimming lessons), as well as the fitness center and two basketball courts. The “Healthy New Year, Worthington” Health & Fitness Expo, conducted by the Chamber in January at The Shops at Worthington Place, offers free health screenings to the community and showcases the services of many of Worthington’s top-rated health care professionals. They include physicians, dentists, eye care professionals, clinics, corporate wellness programs, nutritionists, therapists, chiropractors and fitness centers, as well as the wide variety of assisted living, skilled nursing, home health and memory care programs that call Worthington home. Three major hospital systems, each highly rated by accrediting organizations, are active Chamber members and serve the area with a comprehensive array of health services. OhioHealth is a nationally recognized charitable health care organization serving and supported by the community. Named by Thomson Reuters as one of the 10 best health care systems in America three years in a row, OhioHealth has also been recognized by FORTUNE magazine as one of the “100 Best Companies to Work For” for six consecutive years. The OhioHealth family includes 21,000 associates, physicians and volunteers, 18 hospitals, 23 health and surgery centers, home-health providers, medical equipment and health service suppliers. Among the OhioHealth facilities serving the Chamber service area are Riverside Methodist Hospital, the Westerville Medical Campus, Grant Medical Center, Doctors Hospital-Columbus, Grady Memorial Hospital near Delaware, Dublin Methodist Hospital, the McConnell Heart Health Center, OhioHealth Sleep Services – Worthington, OhioHealth Urgent Care – Lewis Center and HomeReach Home Care. The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center leads the region in the “America’s Best Hospitals” rankings by U.S. News & World Report. Ten Ohio State medical specialties are recognized for excellence in the magazine, deemed one of the country’s leading consumer guides to topperforming hospitals. CarePoint in nearby Lewis Center opened in Fall 2010, offering family practice; internal medicine; cardiovascular and sports medicine; orthopedics; physical therapy; and imaging services. The Center has many other honors to its credit: On the national Best Doctors Inc.’s “Best Doctors in America” list for 2010-2011, 87 percent were Ohio State faculty. Healthgrades has rated 18 treatments the best among central Ohio hospitals based on a national survey of clinical outcomes, patient satisfaction, patient safety and health conditions — more than any other local hospital. The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center also is the first hospital in central Ohio to achieve Magnet Recognition from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC),

one of the highest possible honors awarded for nursing excellence. And, the Wexner Medical Center is one of only five U.S. academic medical centers recognized as a “Top Performer” by the University HealthSystem Consortium. Located in nearby Westerville and serving the northeastern part of central Ohio, Mount Carmel St. Ann’s is a community hospital with the clinical capabilities of facilities far larger. With a state-of-the-art emergency department, maternity center and cancer center, patients are able to get a personal health care experience without sacrificing quality of care. The Mount Carmel St. Ann’s Maternity Pavilion is the only hospital building in the Columbus area designed and utilized exclusively for maternity care. It welcomes nearly 5,000 deliveries per year and includes a Level III special care nursery. The recently renovated emergency department sees 72,000 visits per year, and the hospital itself features 11 state-of-the-art operating rooms and dedicated angio and cath labs. The campus also boasts a dedicated Women’s Health Center and a Cancer Center offering outpatient infusion and radiation therapy services. Expertise in health care in Worthington extends to man’s best friend, as well. Pet owners rely on MedVet, the largest emergency and specialty veterinary hospital in the Midwest and one of Worthington’s major employers. MedVet operates a cancer center and offers 24-hour, emergency veterinary care, including life-saving CPR, emergency surgery, trauma evaluations and diagnostic lab services.

A Place to Call Home orthington is a great place to call “home,” no matter what your taste and budget. Within Worthington’s borders, you’ll find a broad spectrum of architectural styles, amenities and budgets. From historic homes to trendy condos, cozy apartments and 50+ communities, you’ll find that Worthington’s housing is diverse – from large to small, from ranch to multi-floor, from historic to new.
W
Several Worthington neighborhoods are chronicles of its history. Old Worthington is seasoned with colonial charm, retaining in its restored homes many characteristics of the 19th-century village that was platted in New England. Cozy bungalows and Cape Cods in Colonial Hills tell a story of World War II defense housing and family life in a post-war baby boom. The unique architecture of Rush Creek features Frank Lloyd Wrightinspired “Ursonian” designs, many built into a ravine or hillside, with flat roofs, wide eaves, terraces, carports and built-in furniture. Neighborhoods like Worthington Estates and Wilson Hills, with flower-edged cul-de-sacs, neatly manicured lawns and neighborhood schools, are snapshots of Sixties’ and Seventies’ suburban living. Upscale apartment housing for future residents is just taking shape on W. Wilson Bridge Road near The Shops at Worthington Place. The Worthington Historical Society commemorated the diversity of the community’s neighborhoods with the publication of Worthington Neighborhoods in 2006. The volume includes narrative histories and plat maps of 23 neighborhoods and an index of 92 neighborhoods. with their date of formation, location and plat book reference in the county recorder’s office. A common factor in all Worthington neighborhoods is a sense of community that stands out as one of Worthington’s most valuable assets. At the suggestion of a city councilman, Worthington began hosting “Hi Neighbor” month to encourage neighbors to meet and greet one another through block parties, neighborhood picnics and casual gatherings, furthering strong neighborhoods and promoting friendships. The City of Worthington and the Worthington Community Relations Commission also encourage residents to keep their neighborhoods attractive, safe and cohesive. A Neighborhood Grant program provides financial incentives and creates opportunities for neighbors to work together, form neighborhood organizations, make improvements in their neighborhoods and/or develop programs that promote neighborhood cohesiveness. For a special occasion, a business dinner or a family gathering, consider the Worthington Inn, an historic inn recognized as one of central Ohio’s top dining establishments. Try signature shrimp and grits or other Atlantic coast seafood specialties at Rivage Atlantique, or sample the eclectic cuisine at J. Liu Restaurant & Bar. All three feature inviting bar areas, or you can start your evening at House Wine, a destination wine shop and bar with a modern, casual atmosphere. You can try 24 different wines by the ounce or glass at the Enomatic wine dispensing machine, or open a bottle to enjoy on premise, for a small corkage fee, perhaps accompanied by flatbreads, Italian meats and an artisanal cheese plate. Hungry for pizza? You have two miles of choices along High Street. Try the award-winning grape and gorgonzola pie at Pies & Pints at The Shops at Worthington Place, voted among the “Top 20 Pizza Places in America.” Amano’s, also at The Shops at Worthington Place, has an inviting patio area, in addition to its indoor pizza parlor atmosphere. On the south end of High Street, stop at
Natalie’s Coal-Fired Pizza for a combination of live music and old world New York-style pizza made in a unique high temperature anthracite-coal fired oven. In between, try a white pizza with lobster at Rivage, or a traditional pepperoni from Worthington Primo Pizza, a local favorite. New to town but importing fans from other locations are Dewey’s Pizza, at New England Avenue and High Street, which offers some unusually named pizzas like Rocky Balboa and Edgar Allen Poe, and Jet’s Pizza, the 17th largest pizza chain in the nation, a good choice for delivery for your tailgate party. Sweet tooth? Mrs. Goodman’s Baking Co. offers scratch-made cakes, cupcakes, or cutout cookies, and the tempting pastries and Viennoiseries at La Chatelaine are sure to delight, along with their other French cuisine, ranging from quiche to Beef Bourguignon to delicate crepes. Treat yourself to ice cream at Graeter’s in downtown Worthington or a Blizzard or soft-serve cone in the nostalgic setting at Dairy Queen. At The Shops at Worthington Place, select a decadent truffle from Sugarbush. Start the day with a La Chatelaine croissant or head to Panera or First Watch at The Shops at Worthington Place. The Worthington Inn features a spectacular brunch buffet on Sundays. Worthington residents love to gather in warm, welcoming pub settings with neighbors and co-workers. coming year. Keynote speakers address topics of concern to local business owners and residents, including economic development, transportation and other issues affecting economic vitality and quality of life. Golfers from throughout the community are invited to participate in the Chamber’s annual Golf Outing, recognized as one of the best outings of its kind in central Ohio. The event is a great way to build relationships with a customer or client, reward a dedicated employee, or treat yourself to a day of golf while networking with other Chamber members. The event is held in September and alternates yearly between York Golf Club and Worthington Hills Golf and Country Club. The event, with a scramble format, includes 18 holes of golf with cart, lunch, picnic dinner and assorted beverages. Prizes are awarded to the top finishing teams, and golfers have a chance to win additional prizes through a door prize drawing and skill holes on the course. Hole-in-one contests offer exciting prizes, including cash, airline tickets, electronics and golf equipment. Chamber members and the public are invited to participate in a Community Shred Day each April in the parking lot at the rear of The Shops at Worthington Place. Clear out old tax files, protect yourself against identify theft, help the environment and support Chamber-sponsored scholarships when you participate by dropping off sensitive documents and electronic devices. Experienced professionals shred the documents on-site at a mobile shred truck, for your immediate inspection. As a “cost” for the service, donations are accepted for Chamber-sponsored scholarships. To learn more about Chamber-sponsored community events, call (614) 888-3040.
Keeping the Faith pires and steeples punctuate Worthington’s landscape — reminders of faith and values that were early cornerstones in the community’s foundation in the early 19th century and continue today. In recent years, representatives of many faiths have united to celebrate their commonalities at an annual prayer breakfast hosted by Worthington Mayor Harvey Minton.

St. John’s Episcopal Church, which anchors the northeast quadrant of the Village Green, was launched in 1804 by Worthington’s founding fathers, settlers from Connecticut led by businessman and Episcopal deacon James Kilbourn. St. John’s was the first Episcopal Church west of the Alleghenies and the first church in the area. Reflecting the backgrounds of the New England settlers, Methodist and Presbyterian congregations soon followed. Numerous Protestant denominations developed as Worthington grew, soon joined by centers of worship for Catholic and Jewish residents. Saint Michael, the first and only Catholic parish in Worthington, was established in 1946 and built a well-respected parochial school in 1954. Saint Michael Church was completed at the same site in 1964. Congregation Beth Tikvah, a Reform Jewish temple serving the Northwest part of Columbus, celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2011 and has occupied its Olentangy River Road facility since 1980. Today Worthington’s faith-based institutions represent a diverse sampling of religious preferences, missions and approaches to community outreach. Advocacy & Collaborations Through collaborations with governments, schools, libraries and other community groups, the Chamber is the leading voice for business in the area. We actively promote “buy local” principles, free enterprise and creating effective partnerships with government. Our Chamber does not endorse political candidates or partisan issues, but we regularly provide opportunities for members to meet elected officials and candidates for office, encouraging them to learn all sides of an issue and to represent the interests of individual business owners to legislators. The Chamber conducts occasional forums and Lunch & Learns that invite elected officials to offer updates on current legislation, and we annually conduct a Business After Hours to introduce and thank public servants and elected officials. Working with our community and legislative partners and our members, we seek to ensure that the Worthington area remains a great place to do business. 2013-2014 Community Guide & Business Directory | 23

The Women’s Business Network
The Women’s Business Network provides additional networking, career development, personal and professional exchange opportunities for women business owners and professionals. The group was formed in 2008 with the assimilation of the former Worthington Area Business & Professional Women. The Women’s Business Network meets 10-12 times per year, typically at luncheons with keynote speakers or panels addressing topics of mutual interest. In addition to business-building topics, programs may include women’s health topics or issues related to balancing work and family. Approximately 50 to 60 businesswomen attend each monthly event. Gentlemen are also welcome to attend. At each meeting, members and guests can support our scholarship fund by making announcements ($5/member; $10/guest) and participating in door prize drawings ($1/member/guest). The group’s career mentoring efforts support Worthington’s public high schools by assisting with mock interviews, career shadowing and mentoring. Each year in May, the Women’s Business Network provides two scholarships to young women at Worthington’s two public high schools who aspire to a career in business or a profession. The scholarship application process is competitive, including essay responses from applicants, and is judged by a committee of the Women’s Business Network. Meetings of the Women’s Business Network are posted on the Chamber’s Calendar of Events and the Community Calendar. To learn more about the group, call the Chamber office at 888-3040.

Young Professionals of Worthington (YPoW)
Are you between the ages of 21 and 39? Get powered up with Young Professionals of Worthington (YPoW)! YPoW is organized by the Worthington Area Chamber of Commerce to equip young professionals who live and work in the Worthington area with networking, educational and social opportunities. YPoW will help to grow emerging leaders to serve our community’s future. The group plans networking and social events, philanthropic and charitable activities, and leadership development opportunities throughout the year. YPoW holds four “mixer” events each year, participates as a group in supporting the Chamber’s major fundraising events, and conducts a bimonthly “Lunch Bunch” activity that includes a brown-bag lunch and discussion of topics of common interest led by a speaker or panel. Visit the Chamber’s website, www.worthingtonchamber.org, to download a brochure about YPoW that includes a membership application. To learn more about YPoW and how you can get involved, contact Katie Berry, Insurance Agencies of Ohio, at (614) 848-3000. Network Referral Groups - Impact Tips Group & New Connections Referral Group
The Impact Tips Group and the newly formed New Connections Referral Group are “network referral groups” of Chamber members from non-competing businesses who thrive on direct business leads exchanged, and relationships developed, through weekly interaction at a breakfast meeting. The groups each consist of 15-20 business representatives from disparate industries or professions who steer appropriate referrals to other group participants on a regular basis. Participants in the group learn about each others’ products and services; identify new potential customers and supply sources; discuss and attend other Chamber events individually or as a group; and establish
relationships with others they know, like and trust. A typical meeting may include brief presentations from group members on their business, sharing or follow-up of referrals or business dealings with others in the group, and a reminder of other business-building Chamber activities. Impact Tips participants are largely involved in B2B products and services, and New Connections includes business-to-consumerfocused members, as well. To participate in a network referral group, one must first be a Chamber member in good standing and represent an industry or profession not already filled within the group. Participants pay an annual fee of $30 in addition to their Chamber membership dues investment. To learn more about the groups and arrange to visit a session as a guest, contact the Chamber at 888-3040. Small Office/Home Office “SOHO” subgroup
Do you work in a home office or very small office? You may benefit from monthly meetings with others like you, featuring speakers and discussions on topics of common interest, in the Chamber’s Small Office/Home Office “SOHO” subgroup. Marketing, legal and tax issues, customer service, organizational tips and many other concerns are among those the group expects to address at its monthly “brown bag lunch” sessions. SOHO is a Chamber affiliate group serving home-based businesses and small businesses of five or fewer employees where the owner typically “wears all the hats.” The group offers peer support, exchange of best practices, education about topics of common interest, and networking/lead exchange among Chamber members who share this business type. The 90-minute meetings include networking time before and after the structured topic/agenda. All participants in the SOHO group must be Chamber business or associate members in good standing (dues current). The group is not open to individual or retiree members. Consistent with the Chamber’s other special interest subgroups, SOHO participants pay a $30 annual fee for the group. The group meets on the fourth Thursday of each month from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., with a brown-bag-lunch format. For more information or to sign up for the SOHO group, call the Chamber office at (614) 888-3040.
