Autumn leaves come tumbling down
By Ron Reid
Our region is among the best in Ontario for colourful autumn leaves, a source of awe for visitors but maybe less welcome by homeowners with shade trees You have likely noticed that some years have better displays of bright colours than others, just as some species have different hues than others .
In fact, broadleaf trees like maples and oaks have their fall colours already set once their leaves unfurl in the spring Each leaf has a combination of two types of hidden pigments: carotenoids, the same orangeyyellow pigments that occur in carrots, corn and buttercup flowers; and anthocyanin, which provides the reds in cranberries, grapes and cherries During the spring and summer months, these pigments are hidden in the leaves below a dominant layer of green chlorophyll, the pigment that carries out the essential work of converting carbon dioxide and water into sugars to feed the tree’s growth .
As autumn approaches, our broadleaf trees go into an ancient survival mode to see them through the cold winter months Tight scaly buds are set to provide next year’s foliage . A corky substance gradually forms at the base of each of this year’s leaves This causes the green pigments to fade away and gives the other colours their chance to shine for a few weeks before each leaf lets go and twirls to the ground .
Why are some autumns brighter than others? A combination of factors come into play The best scenario is a mild wet spring, a summer with moderate weather, and then a crisp fall with mild sunny days and cool (but not freezing) nights Because of their mix of pigments, some species are always going to be more vivid than others . Red maples, for example, always provide brighter reds than hard maple, which present more orangey hues Oaks have rich brown leaves; ash often show a purplish tone
Although the exact timing of autumn leaves is hard to predict, there is a definite progression through the species Ash and butternut shed their leaves first, then the maples and birches, with oaks hanging on to their brown leaves until later The last to go are usually the bright yellow leaves of the poplars, and beech trees keeping their leaves fluttering in the winds well into early winter
Conifer trees – the pines, hemlock, spruce and balsam fir – stay green year-round They can do so because their needles are clad in a thick layer of waxy material that prevents them from losing moisture during the winter With one exception: the tamarack that clad many wetlands lack that ability Late in the autumn, they turn a beautiful shade of gold before their needles drop In spring, the new needles grace this species with a light green hue
What is the best way to dispose of all the leaves that have accumulated in your yard this fall? The best answer is to leave them be until spring . That carpet of leaves shelters a rich diversity of worms, insects and other microscopic critters . You can rake up the leaves when the snow retreats, or use your lawnmower to mulch them before adding to your compost pile So relax and watch the football games – it’s good for the ecology!

Township Update
Fire Prevention Week, October 9 to 15
Severn Fire and Emergency Services is challenging everyone in Severn to test their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and get loud as part of Fire Prevention Week .
Fire Prevention Week runs from October 9th – 15th Severn Fire and Emergency Services is urging everyone in Severn to check their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to ensure they are working . By law, every home in Ontario must have a working smoke alarm on every storey and outside all sleeping areas
Testing alarms by pushing the test button produces the same series of beeps the alarm will make in an emergency . If your alarm is making a consistent chirp on its own or does not make the alarm sounds when tested, replace the batteries . If the alarm is still chirping after battery replacement or does not sound when tested, replace the alarm
Testing your alarms is the only way to ensure they are working and that you and your family can be alerted in the event of a fire
“Knowing the different sounds your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms make can save you, your loved ones, and your home Be prepared by testing your alarms every month to learn the sound they make and to ensure the batteries work . ” —Jake Hawkins, Fire Prevention Officer

From the Publisher:
It’s a wonderful world
I am a woman of a certain age This means that I wake up at least once through the night . You know what I mean .
Often, I try not to open my eyes too wide, afraid I might not easily get back to sleep . Other nights I remember to open my blind and look at the night sky When it is a particularly beautiful and twinkly sky, I go out on the deck to get a better view The night sky truly is one of the wonders of the world, or should I say one of the wonders that surround our world .
Although I live in a bungalow townhouse community with not much in the way of a view of nature, luckily there is no ambient light at the back of my home to interfere with my view of the night sky .
One night, on my stumble back to bed, a night I didn’t particularly want to look outside, I noticed the light in my bedroom was so bright, I could see my shadow on my bedroom wall
Immediately I felt cranky, sure one of my neighbours had forgotten to turn off their deck lights . Damn .
Lifting the blind, I realized the light was from the stunning harvest moon and, I believe, to its right, the planet Jupiter, to its left Saturn The clouds in the sky helped to paint a masterpiece .
I’m sorry my photo isn’t the greatest It’s the best I could do at 4:00 a m with my Samsung 10 cell phone I’ll keep practicing because the incredible sight of the middle-of-the-night sky always stays in my mind, soothing me back to sleep every time
Any ideas?
I’ve had these dishes since early January . They came from the now closed United Church in Washago Glenys Hepinstall trusted me to gather them up, take them home, sell them, and give the money to charity on behalf of the church .
Sadly, I have failed Certainly not from lack of effort . I had two possible sales, both of which fell through .
It is a large collection of dinner plates, side plates, cups, saucers, fruit/small desert bowls, and luncheon plates Four-hundred pieces in total
The dishes are vintage, circa 1960 . They were made in England by The Grindley Hotel Ware Co Ltd expressly for Cassidy’s Ltd In Canada The pattern is Apple Blossom
It was my hope that either a consignment shop or a new restaurant/diner would
have interest Or perhaps just a collector of vintage dinner ware .
I would be very grateful to Villager readers if they would send me their thoughts and ideas Getting some cash for these dishes would help a charity organization and fulfill my obligation to Glenys

Change is coming to The Couchiching Conservancy
By Courtney Baker
Warm drinks, cozy sweaters and the smell of fallen leaves give me a feeling of contentment I just cannot muster from summer’s heat, or the winter’s chill . Despite my steadfast nature, fall is my favourite season, a time (for me) most representing change which I welcome Some flowers are still blooming; the snow starts falling; and animals migrate and hibernate . All of this is set against the world’s most fantastic display of colour .
Changes, like the flow of the seasons are predictable They keep life fresh and moving forward We may not have a sense of exactly how things will turn out, and what joys to expect, but we know there will be good times .
Things are like that right now at The Couchiching Conservancy because our long time Executive Director (ED), Mark Bisset is stepping aside to move onto his next adventure . Mark has been an incredibly successful ED, leading a team that has galvanized a community to help protect thousands of acres of wildlands in our region He has created a work culture like no other for those who work under him We have thrived under his leadership, a leadership well-known across Ontario’s land trust community . He will leave behind the legacy of a healthy, growing organization along with a happy cohort of staff and an incredible amount of land protected Hats off to Mark
Of course, with Mark moving on, it makes room for a new leader to bring the organization forward . I am happy to announce our very own Dorthea Hangaard accepted the offer to become our new ED Dorthea has been with us for over 10 years and, if you know her, you know she is a tenacious, passionate and thoughtful member of the community . Her reputation for her work on various community projects and stewardship programs proceeds her She has been the main driver behind our hugely successful Community Science Program
For organizations like The Couchiching Conservancy, change is good . In the world of non-profits, our work has to equal more than the sum of its parts and we rely on more than one person’s influence . This change reminds us to keep moving forward, now with Dorthea at the helm, because life is not frozen in time . There is much happiness waiting for us in the future and growth through change is a part of that .
So like the fall, this season in the life of The Conservancy is bitter sweet We say farewell to Mark but we welcome and congratulate Dorthea as she embraces her new role We know the Couchiching Conservancy will continue its unrelenting work to conserve and protect our lands .

Record amount raised at Washago art auction
On August 27th, the Lions Club hall was filled to standing room only in anticipation of the auction of local art Specifically, the outdoor art exhibition of painted panels, those that had been on display in the village of Washago during the summer, were now available to art lovers .
The event was emceed by local resident, volunteer and art lover Glen Hudgin He and art club members enlisted the help of council members from Ramara and Severn, each of whom took turns and bravely carried out their role of auctioneer .
The result of the generosity and talent of the artists, the organizers and especially the community members who bid on the art pieces, was $8,900 00 This is by far a record amount of money raised at the now annual auction of the Washago Art Club’s outdoor art pieces
.
Cheryl Lawder, artist and member of the steering committee of the Washago Art Club told The Villager that one piece alone,
Wealsoofferlendingfor
a beautiful painting of railroad tracks, went for a record amount of money
“One of the bidders was a woman who had recently lost her husband He had been with the railway and she bought the panel in his memory . She kept bidding until successful, determined to take that piece home As artists we never know what one of our pieces will mean to someone ”
The money raised at the Washago Art Club auctions is used to support the club’s community projects such as the yearly outdoor art exhibits . In the past, the club, led by local artist Kathy Nicholson, was involved in raising the money necessary to wrap the Washago water tower in a piece of art
Now, because of the success of previous and the most recent auction, the club hopes to move forward with another community display – a 5-6’ carving of a trumpeter swan, an iconic representation of Washago The next steps will be to commission a local
This panel, painted by local artist, Craig Welbourne, was purchased by a bidder in memory of her late husband who worked for the railway.

Local cancer survivors who attended the Orillia Terry Fox Run on September 18, 2022.
Return of Orillia Terry Fox Run a huge success
The September 18th gathering of the Orillia Terry Fox Run participants and the volunteers at Couchiching Park is a remarkable sight to behold Old and young . Bicycles, roller blades, walkers and wheelchairs . Many participants had broad smiles as they meet up with their running team, some who have joined the Run for many years There were also those openly weeping in remembrance of someone recently lost .
The number of people wearing special red Terry Fox shirts, the colour identifying those who have had a cancer diagnosis was disconcerting Many represented there, however, are living well because of
successful treatments, the result of ongoing research and most certainly clinical trials Nobody at this event will forget the sight of those cancer survivors standing together, shoulder to shoulder, to be photographed as part of a team nobody wants to join .
The day started out with heavy rain but as Alison Stoneman, the event organizer wrote in her press release, “In true Orillia Terry Fox Run fashion, the rainy skies cleared, leading to what looks like a nearrecord fundraising total . ”
The sunshine city’s Terry Fox Run for Cancer Research returned to an in-person event for the first time since 2019 and raised $43,170 .80 with more funds expected to
bump the community’s cumulative total since 1988 to approximately $900,000 00
The Orillia event was bolstered by online donors and an auction . Approximately 425 participants and volunteers took part in person on the day of the Run .
“I’m heartened and grateful to our participants and volunteers for adapting to handle a rough start to their day only to see the clouds part in time for our opening ceremonies and run start,” says Alison Stoneman “The success of the return to an in-person community run is a tribute to the support we receive from the community It was a great day for cancer research ”

Throw some rocks at their house this winter
An invitation from the Gravenhurst Curling Club
According to the World Curling Association, the sport of curling may have started as an enjoyable pastime of throwing stones over ice during harsh Northern European winters Whether this is true or not, history does show curling in its early days was played on frozen lochs and ponds Formal curling rules were created by the Scots in 1838
The sport has come a long way since then For decades now, curling has been included in the Winter Olympics, televised around the world and watched by millions Most cities in our country have specialized curling facilities or ice time at public arenas
Realistically, not many curlers will achieve gold medal status Nevertheless, members of curling clubs take their time on the ice seriously, not just because of the potential
of a win but the exhilaration as a result of the exercise, the comradery of their team members, and the anticipation of social time after the game .
Curling is a sport that can be played at almost any age . It’s fun and it doesn’t take long to learn the basic rules As with any sport, it may take time and practice before a beginner feels they’re a benefit to their teammates, but most facilities place similar skill levels together
The Gravenhurst Curling Club is extending an invitation to the public to attend one of their open houses: September 29 or October 18 from 6:30 p m to 8:00 p m Club members will show you what curling is all about .
As well, attendees will hear details about the 4-week “Learn to Curl” program that runs on Sundays through November This program will teach the basics of curling, game etiquette and basic strategy . The fee of $60 includes all supplies . You’ll just need comfortable clothing, a warm jacket and clean, indoor gym shoes
The Gravenhurst Club also welcomes new members and has leagues that cater to all ages and all skill levels .
The club is located at 330 John St . North, Gravenhurst . For more information email info@gravenhurstcurlingclub .com or visit www gravenhurstcurlingclub com

SEVERN 2022 MUNICIPAL ELECTION CANDIDATES
Mark Gibbons Candidate for Mayor
Born in England, as I child I moved to Canada with my family Severn Bridge is my home, the place I love to be with my wife, Carol I am lucky to have her as my partner in life and in business
My career has always involved working in auto repair . I have worked in a number of senior positions, including as a production manager Ten years ago, I opened my own business, Washago Auto at Coopers Falls Rd & Highway 11 Over those years, I have built up a successful business with good steady clientele I have also made many friends in the township over this time .
I believe that the experience I have and the skills I’ve learned will help me in the role as mayor of Severn .
My approach to this election campaign might be thought of as unusual I have not put signs around the township and have not created any brochures My hope is that through my dealings with the public, their help to share their support through social media, and my personal phone calls to voters will help people get to know me and will help to gain enough votes to win this election .
As mayor, my goal is to be for the people I will do everything I can to help solve problems that come up and to resolve some of the issues that residents have brought forward in the past To help with this, I will improve communication and speak directly to residents .
I also want to reduce the amount of time things take to get done Whether it is a big or small issue, I believe there are different ways of doing things that would help the staff and councillors move things forward faster
I don’t know everything about every corner of the township and, if elected mayor, it would be my first time working with a municipality I also know I can’t fix all the problems . But I can say confidently that I can do the job .
Please vote me in as your next mayor
Call me at 705-689-2277 or email washagoauto@hotmail com .
Jessica Gunby Councillor Ward 2 candidate
Having worked in municipal government for over 16 years, in different roles and departments and specifically with different councillors, I know how things work and how they can get done .
I don’t have a platform where I promise to do this or that if elected, because there are no promises any candidate can keep . A councillor is only one vote at the table The thought that any candidate for any office can guarantee specific things being done is an unfortunate misunderstanding
What I can do is listen to your issues, and present them to council on your behalf with any background information they will need to make an informed decision, for the Township as a whole, and not just for a select group of people
I have the municipal administration background to be able to instantly tell you if your request is possible, and I am open to speaking to anyone who needs assistance in any way
I have diplomas in both Municipal Administration and Municipal Management; I have the experience from the other side of the Council table that will bring a lot of additional knowledge to the team .

TOWNSHIP
Dan Janssen Councillor Ward candidate
My name is Dan Janssen and I have put myself forward to become your voice on Severn municipal council
A little more than two years ago, my family moved to Coldwater from Barrie . We moved to this beautiful community to be closer to family and friends We fell in love with this little village and plan to grow our roots here as we raise our daughter
In Barrie, I was actively involved in various levels of politics Running as a candidate in the 2018 provincial and 2019 federal election allowed me to meet many people while learning about the concerns and issues we face as a community .
My interest in politics stems from my 20 year career working at Air Canada . By speaking up about safety issues in the workplace and ensuring follow through, I quickly discovered that I was able to create change in a positive way and help improve the lives of my co-workers This experience inspired me to extend my reach, from being a voice for my co-workers at Canada’s largest workplace, to being a voice for my own community .
I currently serve my co-workers at Pearson as an elected representative of the Machinists Union (IAMAW) . I have been active in the labour movement for more than a decade, fighting for higher minimum wages, improved labour standards and better protections for workers
As your Ward 2 Councillor I will be your voice for the issues that matter most to you and our community .
I strongly encourage you to exercise your democratic right to vote In Severn, there will be multiple ways to participate including: online from October 13, 2022 to October 24, 2022; advance voting at the township office, 1024 Hurlwood Lane, Severn on October 13, 2022 and October 19, 2022; and in person, October 24, 2022 at the Coldwater and District Community Centre at 11 Michael Anne Drive
If you have any questions, and/or are interested in volunteering on the campaign, to donate or to request a lawn sign, please email me at djanssenw2@gmail com
Jodi Lloyd Trustee candidate
Simcoe County District School Board
My name is Jodi Lloyd, and I am seeking your continued support
I am a dedicated, hardworking trustee with a strong commitment to our students and the betterment of public education, as a strong education system creates a strong and productive society . I know and understand education funding/budgeting, staffing/ collective agreements, capital planning, strategic planning/policy development and advocacy which are the responsibilities of trustees in their governance role
I know our local schools and their communities and I work tirelessly to ensure their needs are at the forefront of every decision that is made at the board table . I support parents to navigate the education system and connect them with local supports and resources Schools are vital to building strong local communities
I make well-informed, financially responsible decisions with a long-term vision I am an experienced trustee and have had the confidence of my colleagues to lead our board as Chair for four years, two of which were the most challenging in the history of our board . I have a strong voice both locally and provincially as a board member of the Ontario Public School Board Association, the leading provincial education advocate whom the Ministry consults with I have advocated directly to the Minister of Education during our weekly conference calls that have taken place during the last two years for the needs of our students . I communicate with local Mayors, MPP’s and educational partners regularly on issues of concern or need .
There is much work to be done post-pandemic to support students with their learning needs and wellbeing to overcome the effects of disrupted learning We must continue our work to ensure schools are places where all students feel safe, valued and respected I am committed to the ongoing advocacy that will be required to address funding shortfalls, infrastructure needs and to ensure our children have the educational resources they require for their success I am an experienced trustee committed to the work that needs to be done, who does not shy away from a challenge
I thank you for your consideration Please visit my website www jodilloyd .ca for more information; call me at 705-715-2201, or email jodilloyd4trustee@gmail .com .

SEVERN TOWNSHIP 2022 MUNICIPAL ELECTION CANDIDATES
Learn a little more about Severn candidates
by Ellen Cohen
The Villager sent the Severn Township candidates three questions we thought might give readers a little more information about resident priorities; how they might form a more cohesive community; and asked for comments about commercial and industrial growth
These are the questions:
1. During your campaign, what was the most repeated concern from the residents, and what do you propose could be one of the solutions?
2. Severn is very large, with natural geographical features that divide some wards from others. What do you propose could help to bring together the township as one community while still recognizing the individuality of the various towns and hamlets?
3. What do you believe can be done to bring more commercial and industrial business to the township?
The following are the answers we received from seven of the township candidates They are arranged alphabetically by last name . The Villager has edited for space available .
MIKE BURKETT
Mayoral candidate
1 High-speed internet access is a big issue . I will propose to council once again the need for a formal study to assess the township needs very specifically, and to move forward with an already existing service provider who can give access to most of our township The majority of council support in this term from the new team is my goal . Secondly, Ward 4 (Westshore), the fastest growing part of our township, has no hub, no place to gather, no facility for emergency needs . I support this project 100% but current council voted 4-3 against it There is a plan in the works and I will reserve more comments until after the election
2 It is a vast area but as we improve access to high-speed internet, the township can use its already excellent communications system to bring together more, and eventually all, residents together – costeffectively and efficiently . I have heard from residents their frustration and their desire to be part of the overall Severn community To resolve this, we will need council to support giving thought to not just their own ward where there might be active community hubs, but to the township as a whole I am confident we can do this .
3 Two major highways outline two of our four borders - what an opportunity to create commercial and industrial lands to attract business There is great support in Severn to develop and grow, always careful of our environment . Current rules from the Province of Ontario do not allow for the needed zoning changes, leaving us unable to grow but I will continue to lead our strong lobby work with our MPP The County is undergoing a review requested by the province which gives another opportunity to express our needs I remain optimistic .
JANE DUNLOP Deputy Mayor candidate
1 I have spoken to hundreds if not thousands of our residents about many issues Those with concerns have been kind and polite and overall believe we are a well-managed municipality . Roads and the future of our transportation routes has to be the most pressing issue With that comes future traffic lights and a nonstop program of resurfacing over 430 km of roads . These are all very expensive to provide but as our population grows we will have to build into our budgets . Roads are a priority for the safety and economic value to our residents
2 I have a couple of ideas on how to bring the township a little more together because of the size and natural heritage that makes up the township . Overall, I don’t think it’s a huge problem The Fire Service works extremely well and they work out of 4 locations and that alone is a unifying example of what we already have I suggest one council town hall held each year in each ward, a meet and greet followed by a question period for council and staff . These town halls would show the residents that council is sincere in hearing their concerns and that would reflect in township unity
3 I believe we have to build on what we already have but make it easier for our businesses to get expansion permits, and strongly support our villages and hamlets in beautification projects that make it more attractive for local companies to thrive with local and tourist customers There is nothing more depressing than boarded up windows on local main streets All of our villages and hamlets are geographically beautiful . Let’s support the businesses in those locations by making them a marketing destination through beautification and the use of provincial and Simcoe County tourism grants .

JESSICA GUNBY
Councillor Ward 2 candidate
1 I have not heard many repeated concerns to date, but my solution will always be to do the research on the matter before bringing it to council so they have all of the information they need to make an educated decision
2 Having worked in municipalities where there seems to be a divide between seasonal and permanent residents, or those in other hamlets, I can say it can be a difficult task What I have found helps is both specific events in the towns but rotating larger events so that not one town seems to benefit more than any others Once you bring the people out, they can see that there really isn’t that much of a difference between them all .
3 . Economic Development is something I have experience with, having worked with many developers over my career My first step would research what property the township owns and see if council would agree to declaring them surplus to sell to developers (if that’s what council wanted) The township can’t get involved in private real estate sales, but if we are the seller, we can choose what gets built on the property by choosing who to sell it to
MICHAEL HANSEN
Councillor Ward 4 candidate
1 The need to establish responsible and fair infrastructure costs: roads, sidewalks and water sewer costs need to be responsibly shared amongst the developers and new residents, not piggybacked on the community This means partnering and working with developers across the township to ensure the cost of utilities infrastructure is fairly distributed Technological infrastructure gaps continue to be issues facing Ward 4 small businesses as well . I will tackle and help to resolve these issues
2 Unlike big cities, Severn doesn’t have the benefit of advanced infrastructure such as subways to keep us together . We do have an array of natural resources that could be turned into public parks and beaches where we can all come together Those would stand as a reminder that we are part of something bigger, a community In addition, I propose enhancements to our parks and recreational calendar including community events open to all Increased programs for youth and seniors in each ward would strongly improve the lifestyle of all our residents
3 As Ward 4 residential growth increases, it is essential to attract commercial and industrial businesses, bringing services and jobs . Community engagement will get the pulse of residents’ wants and needs I will stay focused on how the commercial landscape is conducive to a good sustainable business model . I propose working with developers to include service roads from our ward to Highway 11 . For example, the development behind the Tim Hortons should include a service road to the plaza beside the Husky station This would give the hundreds of residents on the east side direct access to this 6 unit plaza without the inconvenience of having to backtrack on the highway Current and new businesses would then see sustainable commerce to this ward
DAN JANSSEN
Councillor Ward 2 candidate
1 One concern I have heard in my hometown of Coldwater is about the functionality of our local park, specifically from parents that are seeking improvements We need to ensure the new parks and recreation plan is functional, allows for many sports and recreational activities and creates space that brings people together Seating at the playground changed recently, I have heard multiple times we need to bring back the bleachers .
2 I love living in Coldwater because of its small town vibe and sense of community The festivals and events which we already see in our community, including; the duck race, steampunk, witches walk, fall fair, etc . help to create a sense of cohesiveness within our village as well as support our small businesses Other communities within our township should be encouraged and supported to have similar events that honour the uniqueness of their hamlet .
3 Our township is centrally located between two main transit routes Promoting this would be beneficial to industries that create products sent south or north What we need to ensure is that while we work to attract business we also promote living wages . This provides workers with the funds to spend and support other businesses in our local community . Protecting our towns and villages from sprawl and gentrification must be a priority, we have to make decisions about building industrial and commercial business developments in appropriate areas that will not impact our historic downtown

WANDA MINNINGS
Councillor Ward 4 candidate
1. The concern I hear most begins with the vast amount of growth we are experiencing throughout Ward 4. With over 1,000 houses under construction and planned residents are rightfully concerned and vocal about the effects on our wetlands, wildlife, waterways (canals, streams), roads & sidewalks, school safety & capacity, disruptions related to construction, traffic flow and the future of our multiple highway on/off ramps. Issues experienced by families that jeopardize lifestyles must be an immediate priority for Council. Challenges related to the Good Neighbour By-laws (noise, outdoor burning, zoning and parking) must be strengthened and enforced.
2. As Severn’s smallest ward residents often feel their voices are not reflected in council decisions. I’ve experienced that myself! Bringing the township together requires council to implement and champion equity across every social, economic, environmental and cultural domain. Opportunities, power and resources must be fairly distributed to meet the needs of all people, regardless of age, ability, gender, income, education level, culture or background. Equity recognizes that those with lived experience are experts on their needs and must be consulted and engaged. An equity lens considers how services and resources can be distributed fairly throughout Severn.
3. Commercial and industrial businesses consider incentives when choosing their operating site and Severn offers many including proximity to communities/ customers, local labour force, and environmental considerations.
However, without available industrial/ institutional land or commercial space, attracting new business and high-paying jobs to our township will never be realized. According to the Township’s website (Sept 19, 2022), no industrial or commercial land is available in Severn.*
A business growth strategy focused on marketing & attracting business and industry is needed. Within our smaller communities, developing retail/main streets that are walkable, compact, and centrally located, with a variety of shops and services integrated together will attract new businesses and consumers.

GERALDINE TAYLOR COOK
Councillor Ward 2 candidate
1. The most repeated concern from residents has been the speed on both town and rural roads – whether from cars or large trucks, especially gravel trucks. Speed can be curtailed through speed reduction zones, speed reductions hours and police monitoring. Meeting with pit owners and council could produce results to reduce speed that would be agreeable to both sides.
2. Making a mosaic of Severn Township would be a monumental task requiring input from all sectors. Each town and hamlet has its own flavour which makes it appealing not only to those currently living in it but to those that choose to move there for just that reason. We must first respect each area and what it contributes and hear from everyone before trying to mesh it all together.
3. Council should work together with the Chamber of Commerce to promote light industry to the area that would have little to no impact environmentally. Promote industry or commercial businesses that would enjoy our work/play way of life.
