For most of their 23 years in business, they owned a Candy Shoppe location on either side of Highway 11 The bright colours of the huge three-sided Candy Shoppe signs and the promise of a fantasysize selection of candy stopped cars on their way to Muskoka and other destinations north, or on their way home Although both shops thrived, the mandated periods of closures during the pandemic along with supply chain issues determined that the northbound shop close The current shop, at 8640 Highway 11, southbound lane, in spite of similar challenges in 2020 and 2021, has been successful beyond expectations .
. The longest vacation they’ve taken in 23 years is a 4-day trip to Disney World They have rarely had a chance to attend family functions It is definitely time to retire, especially while they are both healthy, active and able to start a new and exciting part of their lives . Rita and Dean live on the Trent/ Severn . They have snowmobiles and a boat and they like to fish Dean, who spent much of his career as a marine mechanic can’t wait to spend his days tinkering on what he loves to do . Rita says the first thing she’ll do is take time to read a book, which she hasn’t done in years She loves to cook and garden and she paints They will reconnect with friends and family; and maybe travel a bit What would make Rita and Dean very happy over the next month is for customers to come in to say goodbye They have been so committed to their business and especially their customers Even a quick quick drop in visit would make them both happy as they move on .
“We are so grateful to our customers over the past 23 years and especially grateful to our staff for sticking with us through the stress of the pandemic They have always been amazing . Dean and I are very proud to say we paid them their regular salaries, even when the pandemic rules forced us to close . It was our way of saying we believe loyalty is a two-way street,” said Rita The Candy Shoppe carries a massive selection of candy, every kind imaginable, from vintage selections to the newest in the market, but they are also a major source of collectibles – superheroes, trendy TV and movie merchandise, mugs, socks; and a wide selection of stock for gamers . Even though both Rita and Dean still get excited when they talk about their wonderful staff, the loyal customers and the unique selection of product they have on their shelves, it’s definitely not enough of an incentive for them to keep running the store

The largest part of waterlilies are the roots.
Crisp September days are great for canoeing, especially in shallow waters where waterlilies thrive A few years ago, our quiet paddle through a marshy pond was disrupted by bumping against erratic floating logs among the lily pads These logs were not of wood; rather they were the massive tubers of the lily plants A moose had ripped the roots out of the bottom mud to serve as one of its favourite foods . This moose was obviously a messy eater, chewing on bits but then submerging its head to tear at another tasty root . The waterlilies in this pond were easy to identify, even without the photogenic white blossoms that appear each summer The blossoms were gone, but the round floating leaves left no doubt these were the Fragrant Waterlilies that occur widely across the Canadian Shield . The round shape and smooth upper surface of their leaves help it to cope with any waves coming their way Underneath, each leaf has heavy veins that join to a slender stalk leading to the tuber Those tubers grow over time, helping
By Ron Reid
Ron Reid is a natural heritage consultant and the co-founder and former executive director of The Couchiching Conservancy He has written more than 30 magazine articles and coauthored three books He lives in Washago with his wife, Janet Grand waterlily plants to spread Up top, the flowers play a role as well Inside the whorl of white petals, a ring of bright yellow stamens attracts bees and other insects to transfer pollen . By September, these cores have transformed into seed heads which bend down below the water surface . Muskrats, beavers, Wood ducks and other waterfowl eat those seeds, and in the process spread them far and wide The result is often a dense growth of waterlilies covering large areas, and creating its own unique ecosystem . Bass and smaller forage fish take advantage of the cover provided by the leaves So do MinkSeveralfrogsspecies of frogs use the tops of floating leaf pads to catch some sunshine and to snap up the insects, spiders and even small snails found there . Snapping turtles and Painted turtles often use the leaves for cover as well Many insects feed on the leaves of waterlilies, adding greatly to the richness of this ecosystem A look at their names shows their close relationship to this plant:
Waterlily leaf beetles, waterlily planthoppers, waterlily thrips and waterlily leafcutters, to name a few Small wonder that waterlily ponds also attract an abundance of dragonflies to feed on these insects, and frogs to feed on the dragonflies . A healthy ecosystem is all about balance, where the populations of each species are kept in check by other elements in the food web As you nudge your canoe or kayak among those waterlily leaves, you can see how some of that balance works, all linked to the plant with the big tuber and the round floating leaves
At that event, an audience member asked how non-Indigenous people could help with the healing process regarding the outrageous travesties laid upon First Nation communities for more than 400 years
It was such a good question but one I couldn’t answer So I called my friend, Sherry Lawson, a respected elder in Chippewas of Rama First Nation, the past director of the Rama Library and Rama Cultural Department, and until she recently passed the baton to others, was an integral part of the organization of the annual powwow event She said, “It wasn’t that long ago, in my lifetime, drumming, dancing and so many other ceremonies sacred to our culture had to be held in secret But we are a resilient people Our culture, our teachings, tell us we will be here until the end of time so we are happy today to be celebrating publicly ”.

Rama is a community that welcomes people from the four directions With financial support from Rama’s chief and council, First Nations dancers came from as far away as Attawaspiskat, James Bay and New Mexico in the south The drums represent the best in the country and the new Rama teenage drum group, importantly the next generation, performed all weekend . The newest member of the team is hygienist Kristen Ziegler Holloway . She has been practicing since 2010 and is now pursuing her Bachelor of Science at Lakehead University Kristen says, “The team is amazing Everyone here is so committed to our patients’ overall health This is particularly important to me as a hygienist because in most cases I see patients more often than the dentists . This means I must be careful to observe aspects of oral health that might have an adverse effect on their overall health . This is vital ”.
Kristen Ziegler Holloway, dental hygienist, is the newest member of the Washago Dentistry team.
Some people may be surprised how much the mouth can reveal about a person’s health Kristen explained that gum disease, for example, is an inflammatory condition that could be a sign of a serious health problem . If proper cleaning is regularly attended to, hygienists can observe abnormalities or changes from one appointment to the next, discuss the issue with the patient and advise them to seek care with their primary health provider As part Kristen’s goal of providing education and complete care to her patients, she works with her patients to set up regular appointments . This will be a client-centred plan based on their oral health, time or travel issues, or the expense Whatever the schedule, it is all about good oral health care and prevention from disease Kristen understands that some people avoid regular hygienist appointments out of fear If that is the case, oral health can get out of control and lead to other health issues There is help with the use of nitrous oxide (laughing gas), a safe and common method to greatly reduce anxiety .
Washago Dentistry has proven to be of great benefit to the community . Kristen, now part of that team, is ready to support the practice and the growing number of patients

On July 25, I was present at Mascawis for Pope Francis’ apology to Canadians for the harm inflicted by residential schools . Mascawis in Canada . There dozen MPs in attendance, some because they or several reasons
.
. I commend those who were determined to make this request and to see it through to completion
representing communities with significant indigenous populations I went to the apology
I am not a residential school survivor, nor a direct descendant of one So I will let those voices interpret the apology – whether it went far enough, whether it moves us materially forward on a path to reconciliation
Former National Chief Phil Fontaine was quite positive on the visit and apology, while Justice Sinclair from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission was left feeling it did not go far enough . I don’t expect everyone to agree I will however share some observations: I saw a lot of pain, but a lot of love A lot of grief but a lot of compassion A lot of tears but many smiles I was struck by the directness of the language used by the Pope But like many, I thought the call to action that included a Papal apology had little chance of success

As a practicing Catholic, I have struggled with the Church’s role and accountability with the residential school policy, but I was honoured to be present at this historic event given its significance to our communities and country
The apology also meant a lot to me personally I have a historical and ancestral Metis connection, although culturally I have not been connected to the community I became interested in my ancestral heritage in my mid-20s and my parents completed the research tracing our roots back to Drummond Island and then to the Penetanguishene area in the first half of the 19th century
We also have the largest Metis population in Ontario

Also introduced were two new measures to support parents, students, and the most vulnerable To help those who qualify for disability support, the province is delivering on its commitment to increase the rates for income support by five percent The government also increased the ODSP rate and the Assistance for Children with Severe Disabilities Program’s maximum monthly amount by five percent Future ODSP rates will be adjusted to inflation as wellFilling. gaps in learning for students after two years of pandemic disruptions, the government is investing $225 million in direct payments to parents This investment is in addition to the previously announced $175 million tutoring support program
More details on how families can access this new support will follow later in the year
. Also introduced is the second phase of Ontario’s Plan to Stay Open: Health System Stability and Recovery This five-point plan will provide the best care possible to patients and residents while ensuring the resources and supports are in place to keep the province and economy open Key actions include hiring up to 6,000 additional health care workers, freeing up 2,500 more hospital beds, and temporarily covering the cost of the examination, application, and registration fees for retired and international-trained nurses

This day makes space for Canadians to honour those affected, and reflect on the legacy of the residential school system in our country The occasion was borne out of a need outlined in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 calls to action that include such things as equity for Indigenous people in the legal system, access to healing spaces, and burial information for missing children Things we can all agree no one should have to ask for . When I try to process the impact, I find myself mentally blocked I am free of wounds inflicted by the institution . However, when I view the tragedy through a conservation lens, I can bring it into sharper focus The Conservancy’s need to participate in Reconciliation is critical . Despite routinely being displaced in the name of ‘conservation’, Indigenous people are our best conservationists globally . United Nations reports confirm that land stewarded by Indigenous people is home to more biodiversity, and in the Anthropocene - the age of mass human-caused extinction, this is an incredible achievement With onequarter of the earth in Indigenous hands, these often remote communities have been holding back the tide of the climate catastrophe for some time By Courtney Baker, The Couchiching Conservancy Beautiful wetland at Ron Reid Nature Reserve. How many more hearts would be dedicated to protecting our natural world? When it comes to reconciliation and conservation, it is our privilege to listen and learn from Indigenous people, to value their experience and land-use practices, and to work to amplify their voices of to make a better world for us all . While there is a diversity of opinion and approaches among Indigenous people when it comes to protecting nature, Indigenous people are exceptional leaders in the field . As we press forward into an uncertain climate future they are not solely responsible for protecting our planet, but human kind is unlikely to succeed in maintaining a healthy environment without them

Colin has a passion for Coldwater and the surrounding area and it shows in his dedication to beautifying the main street with flowers, twinkling lights and classic autos on Thursday nights! Most every day you can find him chatting on the curb with townsfolk, putting up banners or helping shop owners and passersby with whatever problem the day brings . No one argues that Colin is not the steward of the Village of Coldwater A typical day can see him put air in a child’s bicycle tire, fix the sink at the Tiffany, help a teen with a fish pull the hook out, push a car out of a snowbank in winter, and even help lost tourists who don’t speak English find their family in the dark (true story) .

Growth planning, completion of our Official Plan and ensuring that Orillia’s plans to annex part of Severn Township are concluded with a three way win for us; Orillia and the Province will need considerable attention .
On top of all that, and in addition to providing for the delivery of normal services that are critical to living in a great community, we must deal with the new and not so new challenges that keep coming at us – floating cottages, short-term rentals, the impacts of aggregate operations, and road safety A strong council can solve these issues All of that and more I will work with you and my colleagues on council to make that happen .
At the core of it, we need to contribute to improvement of our communities - housing, health care, clean water, and access to energy and to broadband . We need a strong municipal voice that stands up for our share And we need to contribute to a local economy that generates profits for forward-looking businesses .
It has been a privilege to be the mayor of this township for the past 12 years and have been guided by the following:
With your support, I believe my experience along with solid relationships with the county, province and surrounding townships will serve all residents well I will work diligently on your behalf for the future of Severn

• A commitment to always respond as promptly as possible to residents Whether by phone, email or in person, it’s how I learn first-hand about issues and concerns and how I might help them .
17
• Visibility and participation in the community . This is vital . There is no substitution for attending celebrations, events and local meetings in person .
• Use my one vote on council wisely: get residents’ input, do research, and communicate well with staff and council - all with an eye on a positive outcome
.
Please vote for me in the upcoming election
So, what are some of these important policies and challenges?
I am running for Councillor in Ward 3 because I want to support the people in our community and believe that now, more than ever, we are on a threshold of developing a new, sustainable lifestyle I am the right person for this job because I have a strong record of commitment to public service, positive disruption and service delivery I am steadfast about being authentic and accountable in my interactions with people, organizations and businesses I am a good listener; a team player

Like most candidates I can spew on about fighting for an open and inclusive council for the next four years But surely that is a given When elected, what I want to do is actively pursue a strong policy-based agenda that focuses on the big challenges ahead . Councillors have only one vote so this must be done through collaboration with the other council members . I am prepared to work hard on that
The past 2½ years have been difficult for us all because of the pandemic but I am proud to say, in spite of the unprecedented challenges the township faced, key services were not interrupted, roads were improved, infrastructure and park/recreation improvements were made, and budget expenses were managed wellResidents have told me that they expect council to address many things over the next 4 years Among the most repeated are: a solution for the county-wide problem with short-term rentals; a move forward with the much-needed community centre in West Shore, the fastest growing part of the township; and continued vigorous advocacy against the annexation of part of the township by Orillia I am committed and eager to move forward with these issues and many others I am also confident that there will be significant support from the new council

Hello everyone . My name is Jane Dunlop . I am a life-long resident of what is now Severn Township and I am currently your Deputy Mayor I am very pleased to be seeking re-election in that position I’ve had 12 years of experience on the Township of Severn council but have actively worked at the municipal and provincial levels of government with my husband, Garfield Dunlop and our daughter, Minister Jill Dunlop I take the job as Deputy Mayor very seriously and for that reason I work very hard to respond to issues and to be a positive force on council and County Council I want to make our township safer and with a more positive liveable environment . Part of a more positive community is the beautification of our villages and hamlets . I initiated the Township of Severn Villages and Hamlets committee and each year we levy a small amount of money that purchases benches, flowers, banners, etc I fully intend to continue to expand that committee because it is one of our only sources of economic development
I’m extremely proud of the fact that as Deputy Mayor I have been able to work closely with Simcoe County to secure thousands of dollars for community organizations In the Washago area, I am most proud of the fact that I lobbied the County of Simcoe and the Township of Severn to have traffic lights installed at the corner of County Rd . 169 and Muskoka St ., an intersection that has been a safety issue and one that is imperative to fix The underground work is complete and we await the contractor to have all work completed by late this fall
Key issues and priorities Severn residents have talked to me about: the Orillia Shop it will use what the strengths I’ve developed over experienced and dedicated; focused and diligent I promise to give all Severn and to represent the needs of the entire of Severn! 705-305-1086

With 18 years of experience as Severn’s Deputy Mayor and as your representative at Simcoe County, I have the vast municipal experience needed to work for all residents of the township Through my years in public service, I have learned the most important thing I’ve done is listen to residents, really listen By doing this, I learn about their needs and concerns – and then I am able to find solutions that will improve their lives . The solutions I’ve helped move forward have been innovative and managed in a positive way I always read reports thoroughly, research issues diligently, and then move forward by collaborating with staff and all of council, respecting different points of view but always working on behalf of Severn residents who have such a big stake in our growth, our rural environment, and our wonderful villages andMyhamletsvolunteer work at dozens of events has been an excellent way for me to get to know every corner of the township and to give back to so many worthy local groups and non-profit organizations who rely on volunteers from our community
I welcome questions or comments:

We are facing considerable change in the upcoming 4 years and it’s absolutely essential we have a strong voice representing the constituents of our township . I support a responsible and accountable local government committed to serving and listening to the members of our community Ward 4 continues to see considerable development I will be devoted to ensuring fair distribution of costs related to expanded infrastructure as well as promoting the improvement of existing infrastructure such as roads, sidewalks and water sewer services .
My background includes 45 years in the real estate industry
Because I have no challengers for the upcoming election, I have been acclaimed as the Ward 5 councillor for the next four years and I am very pleased and proud to do so . Severn Township is a wonderful place to live, work and play .
Residents of Ward 5, please contact me by email at mcintyrejim1@gmail com or call 705-345-0026 or 705-689-9666
As part of the expansion of Ward 4, it is important that a percentage of developed land includes parks and recreational facilities to service our growing community Further to that, we need to protect our urban boundaries and stop the sprawl that is threatening to encroach on the boarders of our municipality . A strong and invested council is paramount to protecting these boardersIhavealways
Because I’ve owned property in Severn Township for over 20 years, this part of the world is very important to me . My family and I love it so much, we made Washago our full-time home in 2015 and have never regretted the move
At the time of my appointment I said I was excited to serve the community . That enthusiasm has only grown during the past 9 months . I am fully entrenched in the community; listen to the needs of Ward 5 residents; and am committed to focus on what will help to improve the ward and our township
19
To ensure we maintain a safe and peaceful community, I intend to propose a set of by-laws that aim to protect long-term residents from the disruption that is caused by short term rentals
My name Michael S .B . Hansen, and I’d be honoured to serve as Ward 4 Councillor in the Township of Severn
My name is Jim McIntyre and I have been the Severn councillor representing Ward 5 since December 2020, replacing the former councillor who had taken early retirement Through the appointment process, I competed with 13 applicants and have served proudly during the past 20 months .
To add to that experience, I have now worked alongside experienced and dedicated Severn staff and council With many thanks to them, I’ve learned about the many intricacies of municipal by-laws and township policies This is invaluable to me in my work with Ward 5 residents
This experience has given me a bird’s eye view into not just the importance of the financial worth of people’s homes and cottages, but the understanding of the emotional value of their neighbourhood and the importance of the surrounding environmentIhavealso sat on many boards and committees in the City of Mississauga This experience has enlightened me as regards how municipal governments are run and how they are able to help with residents’ issues and make their lives better

I have a BA enhanced by extensive business management and contractual knowledge With a business partner, I founded and ran an international consulting and financial resource management company based in Whitby . Doing this, and through extensive travel, I built skills in communication, negotiation and cultural sensitivitiesWhileliving in Whitby, I gave back to my community including: • several years on the Board of The Festival of Trees, a fundraiser for Hospice • worked with CLOCA (Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority) on a shoreline conservation program • volunteered at the Library • and was instrumental in the establishment of the Whitby BIA Our beautiful little village of Coldwater is on the verge of a building and population boom Where fields and farms once dotted our rural landscape, houses and even small subdivisions are popping up Although we may like the idea of living in a little secluded part of the world where things stay the same, that’s no longer a reality . Growth is good for our merchants, tradespeople and residents if managed properly We can all pull together over the coming years to ensure that we get it right You will need transparency, trust and open sharing of information Upgrading existing infrastructure will be necessary, as will controls affixed to spending . Tight budgeting is also a necessity .
